Mostpeoplehealfromaconcussionandbecomesymptomfreewithinafewweeks Butthisisn’t likeabrokenbone,whereyoudoctorcanofferafairlyconcretetimetableforwhenyoucanreturn toaction.Brainshealdifferentlythanbones.Andeveryperson’sconcussionjourneymaybe different.

Yourpathtorecoverycanbeimpactedbynumerousfactors.Andtheremaybedelaysbeforeyou cangetbacktofullparticipationinwork,school,athleticsandsocialactivities

WhatIsaConcussion?

Aconcussionisatypeoftraumaticbraininjurythataffectsyourbrain’sabilitytofunction normally Concussionscanhappeninanynumberofways Youcouldfallandstrikeyourheadon thefloor.Youcouldrunintosomeoneelsewhileplayingsoccer.Oryoucouldbangyourhead duringacarcollision.Butyoucanalsogetaconcussionifyourbodyexperiencesarapid accelerationanddeceleration.Thiscouldoccurduringatrafficaccident–withyourhead whippingbackandforth–evenifyourheaddoesn’thitanything.

Aconcussionisn’tlikelytocausestructuraldamagetoyourbrain Instead,itcausestemporary microstructuralandchemicalchangesthatshouldfadeasyourbrainhealsovertime.Symptoms varyfrompersontoperson.Theyinclude:headache,nauseaorvomiting,confusion,mental fogginess,ordifficultyconcentrating,temporarylossofconsciousness,dizziness,visionproblems (includingdoublevision),difficultysleepingorstayingawake,lightandnoisesensitivity, unexplainedtiredness,unexpectedmoodchanges(includingdepression,irritability,and anxiousness)

Toprotectyourbrain,itisimportantthatyouavoidcontactsportsuntilfullyhealed.Thisisoneof thereasonswhysportsorganizationsuseextensive“return-to-play”protocolsdesignedtoprotect athletes.

Sincenoonecanputaspecifictimetableonyourrecovery,treatmentrevolvesaroundmonitoring symptomsandhowyourbodyrespondswhenyougraduallyrampupactivities.Yourrecovery mayalsobeaffectedbyarangeoffactors,includingahistoryofmigraines,anxietyand attention-deficit/hyperactivitydisorder(ADHD) Thesedonotmeanthatyouwillnothealfroma concussion,itjustmaytakelongerandrequireatargetedtreatmentplanfromyourdoctorand physicaltherapisttospeedrecovery.

Longgonearethedayswhendoctorssentconcussionpatientsforalengthyrestindarkened rooms.Afteradayortwoofrest,itisimportanttoresumeyournormalroutineandgradually returntowork,schoolandnon-contactaerobicexercise.Researchhasshownthatthishelps reduceanxietyovermissedassignments/workandwithsymptommanagement.

Sleephygieneiskeyinconcussionrecovery.Thoughitwillbetemptingtotakenapsthroughout theday,youshouldtrytoavoidthemandinsteadgetonaregularsleepschedulewhereyouare sleeping8hoursanight.Partofyoursleeproutineshouldinvolveavoidingcaffeineinthe afternoonandbluelightanhourbeforebed.

Yourdietmatters,too.Focusonnutritiousmealsthatarehealthyforyourbrain,includingfoods (fishandwalnuts,forexample)richinomega-3fattyacids.Stayhydrated,withanemphasison drinksthatreplenishelectrolytes Andassoonasyourbodycantolerateit,youshouldalsoreturn toexercise.Aimformoderate-intensityaerobicexercisesforatleast20minutesaday.Youmay alsobenefitfromworkingwithaphysicaltherapist,whocanhelpevaluateyoursymptomsand provideexercisesthatcanspeedyourhealing.

Asyoueasebackintoyourregularlife,youmayalsoneedtoseekaccommodations,eitherat workorschool Thosecouldinclude:

Ifyouhaveaphysicaljob,youmayneedlighterdutyuntilyoursymptomsareundercontrol. Ifyouworkinabrightandbusyofficethattriggersyoursymptoms,startworkingfromhome andgraduallyreturntoyournormalworkingenvironment.

Asyourecover,itisnormaltoinitiallyexperiencesomesymptomswithincreasedphysicaland cognitiveactivity Keepinmindthe3pointrule Ifanyactivityincreasesyourbaselinesymptoms abovethreepointsona10-pointscale,takeabriefbreakfromtheactivityuntilitcalmsdownto thebaseline,addaminuteandreattempttheactivity.Thisgradedapproachwillhelpyourbrain adapttotheactivityovertime.Ifyouoryourlovedoneexperiencesaconcussion,quicklyseek medicalattentionfromaproviderexperiencedinconcussioncare.
