 Pumpkin Catapult Challenge

STEM Focus: Engineering, Physics, Math

Theme: Fall / Harvest

Best For: Ages 6–14 (can be adapted for younger or older kids)

 Objective:

Build a mini catapult to launch a candy pumpkin or small gourd. Measure distance and accuracy, and discuss design improvements.

 Materials:

Craft sticks (Popsicle sticks)

Rubber bands

Plastic spoons

Hot glue (optional)

Candy pumpkins, acorns, or mini pom-poms

Rulers or tape measures

Target (paper plates, baskets, or bullseye board)

STEM Elements:

Science – Forces, gravity, motion

Technology – Use of simple machines

Engineering – Building a working catapult

Math – Measuring launch distance, calculating angles

 Instructions:

1.Stack 7–8 craft sticks and rubber band them together tightly on both ends.

2.Stack 2 craft sticks and band them on one end only.

3.Pry apart the two sticks and wedge the stack between them, forming a lever.

4.Attach the plastic spoon to the top craft stick with rubber bands or glue.

5.Place a candy pumpkin in the spoon, pull back, and launch!

 Experiment Ideas:

Try changing the number of sticks in the base.

Adjust the angle of the launch arm.

Use different weights of "pumpkins."

Measure distance and accuracy with each iteration.

 Add Some Competition:

Farthest launch

Most accurate to a target
