You and others before you have been so generous in your support of Washburn making it possible to provide more than $10 million to the University to support scholarships, faculty teaching excellence, new spaces and special needs. We are extremely grateful. You truly help shape the education and success of our students.

During the past year, we celebrated the largest gift ever to Washburn University. Jacki Summerson, through an irrevocable trust of her late husband Frank, made an estate gift valued today at more than $6 million. This generous gift sets us apart from our peers by supporting teaching excellence through the future establishment of professorships and chairs in academic units across campus and by recognizing exceptional faculty members at every stage of their careers. This kind of faculty support helps Washburn attract and retain the best faculty which translates into the best educational experiences possible for our students.

Scholarships remain an important component in many students receiving a higher education. In fiscal year 20112012, Washburn University awarded $4,145,746 in privately funded scholarships to 1,840 students. You, and other donors like you, made this possible.

3 - SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT

Garvey Scholarship gives competitive opportunity to Washburn students Most students have the same reaction after taking the Garvey Exam. It was challenging.

But the students who rise to the top of the test scores on the Garvey Competitive Scholarship exam believe taking the test definitely paid off for them. The Garvey exam, which tests everything from knowledge of literature to awards “When I walked out of science, scholarships up to the testing room, I wasn’t $2,000 per year for expecting anything,” said the recipients. Bruce Cochener, a third generation member of the Garvey family, who recently passed away continued the family’s long-standing tradition of investing in future generations and ensuring the possibility of a college education for students who might not otherwise be able to afford that dream. Bruce and his wife Nancy made a major gift to increase the Garvey Competitive Scholarship Fund to expand the number of talented students who can pursue a degree at Washburn.

One of the students to benefit from these scholarships is Mollyanne Gibson, a sophomore biochemistry and biology major from Topeka, Kan., who is working hard to complete her undergraduate degree debt free. As a double biochemistry and biology major,

she spends many hours in the lab and studying, and scholarship assistance is making it possible to achieve her debt-free goal. Scholarships were not the only factor that encouraged her to come to Washburn though – the focus on undergraduate research in the Biology department was the real sticking point.

“I looked at six different schools, Washburn really had a student focus – especially with research,” said Gibson. “The emphasis is to teach students how to do research early on, so they can go on in their graduate and professional careers to make the next big discovery.”

SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT - 4 Sadie McGough, a freshman biology major from Silver Lake, Kan., also benefited from the Garvey scholarships. She has her sights set on being a dentist.

She took the Garvey exam because she thought it was a good opportunity to receive scholarship money, but after taking the test, she didn’t think she would have a chance.

“When I walked out of the testing room, I wasn’t expecting anything,” said Sadie McGough. “I was very grateful and happy when I found out I received a scholarship.”

McGough said she really appreciates the scholarship money, and looks forward to getting involved at Washburn through Greek life and Bod Squad.

Kent Van De Mark, a freshman from Greeley, Colorado, majoring in laboratory sciences, said the Garvey Scholarship provided an opportunity to earn scholarship money, and there would be no harm in just trying.

“I thought the test was a great way to comprehensively look at every subject and a fun way to find out what I know and what I don’t,” Van De Mark said.

Van De Mark, who would like to become a pharmacist, decided to come to Washburn due to its fantastic science department and excellent environment. “That and the fact that the cost was reasonable made Washburn stand head and shoulders above the rest,” he said.

Each year, 150-200 students take the exam, which is administered in Topeka, Hays, Kansas City, and Wichita. The Garvey family’s support of Washburn University has deep roots. Garvey Hall and the prestigious Garvey Scholarships bear the family name.

This scholarship has made it possible for generations of students to pursue their dream and attain a college degree at Washburn University and with the Cochener’s generous gift even more students will be impacted in the future.

SPACES ON CAMPUS - 6 Over the years, Washburn has done an outstanding job of looking to the future, of taking bold steps to ensure the success of our students. Part of that success relies on spaces – spaces where students learn, live and work at one of the most transformational times in their lives.

For more than 50 years, Morgan Hall has been a hub of activity on the Washburn campus – for students, parents, faculty, administration and visitors. Much has changed since the facility opened its doors in 1956.

Washburn has more students, more faculty, a broader curriculum, more extracurricular activities, and more connection to the community.

In March 2012, the Board of Regents approved moving forward to design the addition of a Welcome Center and the renovation of Morgan Hall to better serve the needs of today’s students and those of the future. The project will focus on creating a distinctive front entrance to the University from 17th Street and add a much-needed Welcome Center and a comprehensive “one stop” student services area.

“Updating and modernizing the north side of the building facing 17th Street will create a dynamic ‘front door’ to the University inviting everyone to enter the campus and become part of the high quality educational experience at Washburn,” said Dr. Jerry Farley, president, Washburn University.

The addition of a contemporary Welcome Center and a convenient, modern student services area is an important step in moving Washburn forward and supporting the success of our students.

“The newly renovated space will provide students with seamless access to essential services such as admissions, financial aid, academic advisers, student life and student health. It will include updated, modern classrooms and additional student gathering spaces,” explained Richard Liedtke, Executive Director of Enrollment Management.

“This building touches all potential and returning students, their families and any visitors to campus,” said Dr. Juli Mazachek, president, Washburn University Foundation. “This Welcome Center and renovation of Morgan Hall is an investment in our students, our faculty and Washburn University.”

The Welcome Center and renovation of Morgan Hall will only be possible with the support and generosity of our alumni and friends. The Washburn University Foundation will be coordinating the $10 million fundraising effort to make this vision a reality.

New law building focuses on students The Washburn University School of Law has provided nearly 50 years of education in its current location.

Constructed after the 1966 tornado, the building has undergone numerous additions and renovations to improve the educational experience and program offerings for students.

After a careful review and comparison of the learning spaces in our current facility with the needs of future students, we know it is now a pivotal moment to move forward with a new facility.
