One program that excites me the most is the nationallyrecognized Ichabod Success Institute. This program launched last year to give underrepresented high school graduates the support they need when they get to college. It includes a five-week summer institute where students earn six credit hours and learn essential skills. They have access to mentors, peer educators and others committed to helping them graduate and achieve their dreams. Financial assistance for other expenses is also available. This program is crucial when research shows a low retention rate for minority, first-generation and low-income students. We are learning quickly that area high schools want this program to expand and succeed, and many donors have stepped up to help that happen. The staff at Mabee Library and the Center for Student Success and Retention are doing a phenomenal job building and growing this program.

I’m also excited our recruitment efforts are paying off. This fall, we welcomed the largest direct from high school freshman class in Washburn history – 830 students – an increase of 5 percent from last year’s total. Washburn Tech saw its enrollment climb by 4.3 percent. We are confident faculty and staff are doing great work to recruit and retain the brightest and best students and see them all the way to graduation.

In this edition of Bell Tower, you’ll read about the women involved in Washburn Women’s Venture Partners, a group of donors committed to helping us fund projects the University budget may not cover. We are a stronger university when donors band together to offer private funding for what we all believe in – a better educational experience for our students.

The place he calls home Tech student grateful for solid education, abundant opportunities in Topeka

Julio Gorga, a second-year student in the diesel program at Washburn University Institute of Technology, is interested in how big machines work.

“I like taking stuff apart. A lot of kids here grew up on a farm and they’ve already worked on equipment. I’m like a city boy – I think I saw my first cow in a zoo. For me, it’s more like dissecting stuff and seeing how it works,” he said.

“The opportunities that you get are amazing. And if you put in the effort, the instructors care enough to go out of their way to get in touch with their connections and provide these students a fighting chance to get a good job.”

Born in Venezuela and coming to the states when he was six months old, he jumped around between New York and California while growing up.

“My heart is in one state and my soul is in another, but both places are just too expensive to live in for the lifestyle that I want,” he said.

In his mid-20s, Gorga helped a friend move to Kansas and saw the price of living. He decided to stay. He found a job,

married and had a daughter. He had made a commitment to himself though on Sept. 11, 2001, to join the Army someday, and he knew then was the time to do it before he missed the opportunity. After making his decision to join, he was stationed in Georgia and sent to Afghanistan.

“I just wanted to do my part,” he said about going into the Army when he was 27 and serving as a heavy equipment operator. “Our mission was to downgrade our footprint over there, and I got a lot of good experience.”

When he got back from Afghanistan, he knew education would be his key to getting a good job and staying in Kansas would provide him the life he wanted to live.

He started looking at schools and took a tour of Washburn Tech’s diesel shop. He was offered scholarships, and he was humbled to be awarded the Jeremy Drexler Scholarship which memorializes an Army private from Topeka who died in 2004 while serving in Iraq. He was also able to use the tools that were gifted to the program after diesel technology student, Daniel Kelley, certificate ’14, passed away.

“I saw how much the program and the people provide for the students,” he said. “We are sponsored by CASE. We are sponsored by Snap-on tools. Coming into this school, I didn’t have any tools, so it’s monumental. It’s a big deal.”

As Gorga grew up in large cities, he discovered he didn’t receive the best education in classes with many students. It was easy for him to get skipped over as most of the attention was given to the students who were very bright or really struggling with a topic. At Washburn Tech though, he found the perfect class sizes and opportunities to fit his needs.

While he had the expectation to just come to Washburn Tech to learn and try and find a job, he realized it was so much more. This past summer, he was connected to an internship at Cornejo & Sons in Wichita, Kansas, and had the opportunity to see firsthand what it was like to work in a diesel shop, and this semester, another sponsor with the school has connected him to a part time-job while he is finishing his education.

“The opportunities that you get are amazing,” he said. “And if you put in the effort, the instructors care enough to go out of their way to get in touch with their connections and provide these students a fighting chance to get a good job.”

Now with two young daughters, Gorga has been encouraged by his faculty members to apply and take courses at Washburn University to finish his associate’s degree. He knows he is older than his fellow graduates, but wants to make it his mission to give back to a place that has given him so much.

“I’m 34 years old now, and a lot of these other students are lucky they are getting their school out of the way at a young age,” he said. “I want to help students from this school. I just think our diesel program has grown tremendously in the last few years because of instructors, and it would be great to help give some of these students even more opportunities.”

A circle of support Washburn alumnae and friends volunteer their time, finances through WWVP

The women who formed Washburn Women’s Venture Partners nine years ago wanted to combine their financial resources, their passion for giving and their love of Washburn in a way that directly helps students.

As a result, WWVP has awarded 90 grants totaling more than $287,000 since it formed in 2008. For Kris Rinne, ba ’76, meeting the inaugural grant recipients in person validated the importance of WWVP. “I was so impressed with the students and faculty I interacted with when we awarded those first grants,” Rinne said. “Their vision, character and approach all impressed me. I wanted to be part of something that was able to give back.”

Washburn Women’s Venture Partners is a giving circle comprising Washburn alumnae and friends who volunteer their time and commit financial support to Washburn University. In 2006, a group of women started discussing a way to follow in the footsteps of Ruth Garvey Fink, honorary ’81, and Olive Garvey, ba ’14, honorary ’63 – two women who lived a life of service that includes gifts to Washburn projects, building campaigns and scholarships. WWVP met for the first time in 2008 and awarded grants the following academic year.

Cynthia Heath, ba ’71, was one of the founding members and served as chair from the beginning until 2015. She also remembers the enjoyment of meeting those first recipients.

“We heard their stories, and we received instant appreciation of our gifts,” Heath said. “In one case, the student recipient who had asked for video equipment to tape drum lessons described their professor as a professional, caring and excellent teacher. In another, the student recipient said, ‘I never applied for a grant before and I cannot believe I won on my first try.’ There are so many other stories that were just as wonderful.”

As the current chair of WWVP, Rinne recommends membership to any woman looking for a unique philanthropic opportunity that keeps them involved with campus.

“It’s just a fun interaction with a group of ladies who all lean forward in this specific way,” she said. “If you have a passion for Washburn and haven’t found a way to stay engaged or are looking for other opportunities, this is a great group for you.”

Membership requires a minimum $2,000 annual gift to WWVP with a three-year commitment. Members meet twice a year, review project applications and help recruit new members. Academic units apply for grants for initiatives not normally funded by other sources. Projects WWVP has funded include classroom technology, software and support for programs like Mabee Library’s annual iRead.

One recent project that stands out to Rinne brings Washburn education beyond the campus boundaries and into the Topeka Correctional Facility. The grant helps Washburn University Institute of Technology teach women in the prison technical skills needed to make a living wage upon release.

“Our program not only adds skills and credentials – and for some a high school diploma – but it also increases their

self-esteem and hope for the future for themselves and their families,” said Gillian Gabelmann, grants facilitator, Washburn Tech.

Of those graduates who were released, recidivism rates are about 12 percent. The prison’s general population has a 23 percent recidivism rate within one year of release.

Washburn Tech operates the program with WWVP funding, as well as federal grants. The program has trained more than 300 women, complete with a traditional graduation ceremony inside the facility.

“These women have the opportunity, when they come out of the correctional facility, to be certified and licensed in a specific area where there’s a demand for jobs,” Rinne said.

“They have the opportunity to give back to society.

“Many of these women have never had the opportunity to wear a cap and gown before their Washburn Tech graduation.

It is always a very special day for them,” Gabelman said.

“This program is not typical of the grants we give, but one that really stands out. We’re happy to help fund it. For me, it’s really all about the character of the students we’re helping.”

Lessons learned on the court Senior volleyball player thankful for scholarship support

Senior Shayla Conner has been on a volleyball court cheering for a team or playing since she was in diapers.

Inspired by her mom, a coach for 22 years at Kearney Catholic High School in Kearney, Nebraska, Conner has been playing volleyball since she was a third-grader, and the senior mass media major now finds herself in her final competitive year at Washburn.

Despite a stress fracture in her fibula at the beginning of this season, Conner is as confident as she’s ever been in what she wants to do in life. She wants to coach volleyball, but hopes to make a career in public relations working on creative media and crisis communications for organizations.

While her mom taught her the fundamentals on the court, Washburn’s head volleyball coach Chris Herron has pushed her to be her best.

“Being successful in high school made me develop a love for the game, I just wanted to continue that love going forward,” she said. “The best experience has been getting to know my teammates. Every year, we lose our seniors, so it just makes you really appreciate those relationships. You don’t know if they are going to be there next year, so just getting to know them and enjoy each person.”

Conner is a setter, which is a position that controls the flow of the game. Ideally, the setter touches the ball each time it comes over the net. The pressure to make good decisions and send the ball to the right hitter can be stressful.

As a freshman, Conner said she didn’t handle pressure on the court well, and every time she played, she became nervous.

Over time, that pressure bred confidence, and it has made her realize she can handle anything.

“Don’t take anything for granted,” she said. “Now I just have to be confident, and especially with my injury, I know everything can be taken away from you so fast.”

The lessons on the court have also translated into another lesson she is thankful to have learned – it’s important to work hard and earn scholarships. As a student-athlete, she has limited time to work a job or internship to earn money, so scholarships are key to keeping costs low. Conner receives both academic and athletic scholarships that have paid for her education at Washburn.

“Scholarships provide you so much opportunity. People I know are going to really expensive schools, and I know they are paying a lot of money,” she said. “When I get out of college, I’m going to be debt free. I didn’t realize it when I was a freshman how much it would cost, but now I look back, and I’m so thankful.”

She relays the lessons she has learned to her family. Now, she’s the one teaching her eighth-grade sister the importance of scholarships, choosing a good school where scholarships are available and how to earn them.

“Scholarships mean a bright future, because I’m not tied down to the loans,” she said. “I’m ahead of the game.”

Leaving a legacy Estate gift will benefit students with scholarships

While both living prominent lives in the Topeka community in the 1950s, Edward and Eileen McClintock were also preparing for their legacy after they passed away.

After marrying in 1945, the couple moved to Topeka, so Edward could open up his own medical practice on Topeka Boulevard. He graduated from Baker University and the University of Kansas Medical School. Eileen served as office manager in the clinic, but soon found a love for boxers, and opened up Holly Lane Kennels in Topeka.

Their connection to Washburn University was through Edward’s son, George McClintock, bba ’62, who attended Washburn and immediately went into the Air Force after graduation.

“I was working while I went to school,” George said. “I joined a fraternity, but the main thing about Washburn was I liked the smallness of the classes and the dedication of the instructors. I was commissioned through the Air Force ROTC program but shortly transferred back to the Army, which I had served in the enlisted ranks as a paratrooper prior to my

Washburn years. I retired with 23 years of active service in 1981.”

When Edward passed away in the 1980s, Eileen dedicated herself to the boxer world. She was the secretary for the Topeka Kennel Club, regional director for the Heart of America Boxer Club, and Board of Directors for the American Boxer Club, American Business and Professional Women’s Club and Auxiliary to the Shawnee County Medical Society.

After Eileen passed away recently, an estate gift of $2 million for scholarships was given to Washburn University. George said his father wanted to make sure the money went to students who couldn’t afford an education.

“We greatly appreciate the legacy Edward and Eileen McClintock left to Washburn University,” said Marshall Meek, president, Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation. “We are proud Washburn University still offers the same great education and small class sizes George benefitted from, and their gift will allow more students to receive a quality education.”

Trustee issues $1 million challenge New, increased gifts to the Law School Building Campaign will be matched

Cynthia Heath, ba ’71, chair, Washburn University Foundation Board of Trustees, has issued a challenge match for Washburn alumni and the community of up to $1 million to help build a premiere law school building at Washburn University.

Heath, senior advisor, executive compensation at Emerson Electric, has served on the board of trustees since 2007 and as a director since 2009. While she received her law degree at Washington University in St. Louis, she received her undergraduate at Washburn, and believes now is the time to make this commitment to build a new law building. The Cynthia Heath Law Building Challenge will match all new and increased gifts that are designated to the building, up to $1 million. For increased gifts, only the amount of the increase will be matched.

“I’m excited to issue this challenge to all Washburn alumni and ask them to step up and help make this law building a reality,” she said. “Even though I did not graduate from Washburn Law, I strongly believe in the quality of education it provides its students, and I believe the new building on Washburn’s campus will only enhance this signature program for our future legal community.”

She met her late husband, David Heath, ba ’70 and jd ’76, at Washburn. They were longtime supporters of the Washburn University School of Law, and she has continued this support.

She received the Washburn University Alumni Association’s 2013 Monroe Award, was inducted into the Washburn Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013, received an Honorary Life Membership award from Washburn Law in 2016, and she was selected as an Alumni Fellow in 2017.

“With the leadership and support of Cynthia for the Washburn Law building campaign, we are getting closer to meeting our goals to provide a building that matches the high-caliber education the law school provides its students,” said Marshall Meek, president, Washburn University Alumni 9

After more than 50 years in the current facility, the current design is no longer suitable to promote the levels of interaction among students and faculty the modern legal environment requires. The new law school building will provide an increase in the number of classrooms and small group study rooms.

“Our new law school building will position Washburn Law as one of the premier venues in legal education,” said Thomas Romig, dean, Washburn Law. “Cynthia’s vision and commitment, along with many other committed alumni and friends, will make this possible.”

Washburn has committed an unprecedented $20 million to build the law school if $20 million can be raised in private support. To date, the law campaign raised has raised more than $6 million.

“Washburn is excited to make this investment in a 21st century learning and technology environment, and the challenge from Cynthia will ensure Washburn Law remains on the cutting edge of legal education,” said Jerry Farley, president, Washburn University.
