Greetings from Washburn University! Every year at this time, I have the distinct honor of personally thanking you for your support of and belief in Washburn University. I am happy to report this past year your generosity resulted in a record-breaking year of financial support for the University. The $15.2 million made available to the University will have a profound impact on our efforts to provide an exceptional educational experience to each and every student. This exceeds state funding by approximately $4 million. Your generosity helps ensure that we will continue to attract and retain amazing professors, that we will continue to maintain and improve our campus and create a learning environment conducive to student success. You have made many things possible for our students, faculty and campus. Know that your generosity provided: • Washburn Tech students in 14 different programs with scholarships through the Go Topeka/Joint Economic Development Organization; • Faculty members with Sweet Summer Sabbaticals to travel from East Asia to Wales, from Australia to Africa, from Vietnam to the Vatican and points in between to enhance their knowledge and talents and bring back those experiences to share with students and faculty alike;

Bell Tower is a publication provided by the Washburn University Foundation, which is committed to building a community of support to continuously strengthen Washburn University and enhance the educational opportunities and experiences of our students. For more information or questions regarding the Donor Honor Roll, please contact the Washburn University Foundation at 785.670.4483 or go to GiveToWashburn.org.

• Washburn athletes the opportunity to earn the MIAA Academic Excellence award, MIAA Scholar Athletes recognition and MIAA Academic Honor Roll status, most of whom received both academic and athletic scholarships allowing them to succeed in the classroom and in their sports; and • Students enrolled in the newly launched entrepreneurship and innovation degree program the opportunity to represent the entire United States in an international business competition earning the title of world champions. All three of the students credit their professors, the rigorous academic environment and the financial support made possible through our alumni and donors as critical factors in their success. Please know your gifts do make a difference. Your commitment to Washburn is reflective of your belief in our mission, your belief in our vision of the future and, most of all, your commitment to ensure future generations receive an education second to none. Thank you for your dedication, your time and your generous financial support. I am honored to work with you, and I am truly grateful for all you do.

Dear Alumni and Friends, This past year was very special with so many celebrations surrounding Washburn’s 150th anniversary, giving us the opportunity to retell Washburn’s history and understand its important legacy for alumni and students. So, it is especially fitting we would make history at the Foundation and Alumni Association during this year of celebration. This past fiscal year was phenomenal. In fact, the amazing generosity of 5,713 alumni and friends resulted in gifts – both current and future – of more than $25 million. While these results are truly exceptional, the most important part of the story is the impact these gifts have on campus. This year the Foundation has made $15.2 million available to the University. This amount has increased nearly 50 percent since the beginning of the campaign and exceeds state funding to the University by approximately $4 million. That is a true testament of your commitment to Washburn University. In this issue of the Bell Tower, you will read about the direct impact your gifts have on students who receive much-needed privately funded scholarships – students like Ashley Sumpter. Ashley, a three-time recipient of a Washburn Women’s Alliance scholarship, is a single mother working toward a master’s degree in addiction counseling. She is one of 1,751 students who benefited from the $5 million made available for scholarships. Additionally, the campus will benefit from $6.2 million for faculty and program support and $4 million to enhance the learning environment. You are part of this inspiring story. Your belief in Washburn and support of the work of the Foundation and the Alumni Associations have made such a difference. I am

humbled to work with such a dedicated and committed group of individuals who love Washburn and share in our vision of its future. Thank you so very much for all you do for Washburn, our students and faculty and for future generations of Ichabods. In sincere appreciation and celebration,

JuliAnn Mazachek President Washburn University Foundation

them consider Washburn, even college in general, for the first time. Jessica De La Rosa, a 2016 graduate from Highland Park High School, Topeka, Kansas, is one of the firstgeneration students in the program. As a freshman in high school, she knew she wanted to go to college, but didn’t know how she would get there. De La Rosa was born in the United States but grew up in Mexico. Eight years ago, she moved back to the United States and learned coming into English.

Alan Bearman, dean of libraries, and James Barraclough, director of undergraduate initiatives, are leading the Institute and reached out to high schools across Topeka during the 2015-16 academic year seeking students who have overcome difficult life circumstances and would benefit from a college education. “A lot of us The Institute seeks to recruit college were worried we underrepresented groups to weren’t going to pass classes, Despite being on the honor roll in the University and consists of coursework, activities, and but the Institute showed us high school, learning French as a services that work together to third language, playing sports and we could do it.” put students on the right path. financially. The hope is to award even more scholarships based on how students will perform in the future with the Institute.

“Coming here and having people recognize my career goals and wanting to help me get there has been a huge weight off my shoulders,” Davis said. “I thought I was going to have to do it alone.”

“This is the American Dream,” said Bearman. “We are doing what Washburn exists to do. Non nobis solum means not for ourselves alone. We are helping these students to become the next generation of leaders. We’re radically changing them through their education. It’s beautiful.”

The Institute is also trying to change the way some scholarships are awarded. This year, the students were chosen for the Institute based on their potential, not their past, as many had troubles at home or struggled

Washburn Tech thriving from corporate donations, partnerships Washburn University Institute of Technology has grown into a model for technical training and workforce development since joining forces with Washburn University in 2008. “The vision was to become a destination technical institution,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech. With that vision in mind, Washburn Tech built four national training centers – the Midwest Training Center through a partnership with Trane USA; a diesel technology training center through partnerships with CASE Construction and The Victor L. Phillips Company; a BNSF locomotive diesel technician training center; and a Fiat Chrysler automotive technician training center. Financial support and in-kind donations from these companies helped develop the centers, leading to rapid growth – more than $4 million invested in the Tech campus in the last four years.

“Representatives from CASE came in after we built the Trane center,” Coco said. “Within moments of seeing what we had done, they said if we would do the same thing for them, we would have a partnership and equipment showing up within six weeks.” High-tech training presents a need for high-tech tools, a burden for students sometimes exceeding $2,500. Tech used private gifts and other support to purchase $301,000 worth of products from Snap-on Tools. Full-time students can rent the tools for $50 a semester, and part-time students can rent them for $25. Students can also purchase the tools at a reduced price through Snap-on Tools’ technical education program, SEP Tools for Life. “Schools that don’t require tools typically have very low job placement,” said Doug Carrig, sales manager for education, Snap-on Industrial. “The toolset itself becomes a large part of a graduate’s resume. In most technical industries, time is money, and having the

education, GO Topeka. “We want to give students opportunities to support their community by earning a living in Topeka and Shawnee County.”

As students near graduation, they then start to take advantage of the programs Snap-on has to offer to supply them with the professional tools they need to start their careers. Snap-on Tools also provides Washburn Tech students free training and testing when working on industry certifications.

The JEDO/GO Topeka scholarship recipients are benefitting from Washburn Tech’s adaptability to the regional marketplace, which is a key ingredient to economic growth in the area.

“From day one on our campus, you’re exposed to the safety and science behind the equipment,” Coco said. “Your resume isn’t going to just say auto technician or diesel technician. It’s going to say you have torque, metering and diagnostics as industry certificates.”

“It’s important for Washburn Tech to grow their partnerships with business and industry, to listen and be collaborative,” Stapleton said. “What is needed in the marketplace now could change in six months. Adaptability is key for institutions and employers. Washburn Tech’s instructors understand and accomplish that, and they do a wonderful job.”

For the third straight year, GO Topeka, the organization dedicated to economic growth in Topeka and Shawnee County, invested $50,000 toward scholarships for Washburn Tech students. The Joint Economic Development Organization/GO Topeka Scholarship provides financial assistance to students pursuing highwage and high-demand careers in northeast Kansas. “We saw a need to provide scholarship opportunities for low-income, minority and first-generation attendees,” said Barbara Stapleton, director of workforce and

Organizations like GO Topeka and Snap-on Tools are important elements to Washburn Tech’s ability to provide a well-trained workforce. “We have one of the highest placement and graduate rates in Kansas,” Coco said. “If a student comes to Washburn Tech, completes the work and is drug free, placement’s not an issue. We will place every one of those students. That doesn’t happen without the vision Washburn University had eight years ago.”

Zachariah Elem (left), a dual-enrolled climate and energy control technologies and electrical technology student, works on an HVAC system in Washburn Tech’s Midwest Training Center. Julio Gorga (right), a heavy diesel construction technology student, works on equipment in the CASE Construction and The Victor L. Phillips Company training center. “Knowing I am working with the industry’s best machines and tools will make all the difference in the world now and in the workplace,” Gorga said. “And with the SEP program, I’ll be able to save thousands buying Snap-on Tools.”

She recently received the WWA scholarship for a third year and is pursuing her master’s degree this fall. “That scholarship gave me the empowerment I needed,” Sumpter said. “It told me somebody believed in me. I don’t know if I would have gave me finished without the financial help.”

Fortunately, they weren’t apart for long, as her maternal grandparents stepped in and adopted them when Sumpter was 11 years old.

“This is the day I remember being able to understand that an adult could actually believe in me,” Sumpter said. Years passed, and one big motivator caused Sumpter to make the decision to get a college education. Her daughter, Emmalyn Kristine, was born in 2005, and she decided to pursue her degree. When she encountered additional hardships, she took a break from school. When she returned in 2009, she was taking classes part time, balancing work and being a mom. She was also coaching her daughter’s volleyball team and working with students at Pauline South Intermediate school, Topeka, Kansas. When she first received the WWA scholarship two years ago, Sumpter said it made the difference for her to finish her degree in human services, with a

Sumpter works as an addiction counselor at the Topeka Treatment Center, which provides substance abuse treatment to help people live a drug-free lifestyle. She hopes to buy a house and continues to provide for her daughter as she progresses in the field for which she has a great deal of passion.

“I want to guide those who need help,” said Sumpter. “So much of society just walks by addicts and thinks they can ignore them because these people are not their problem. It’s up to us to help these people and make them better members of this society. I want to help them see they can make their dreams into goals and their goals into reality.” ABOUT WWA In 1995, the Washburn Women’s Alliance was established to provide scholarship assistance for nontraditional female students enrolled at Washburn University. The organization now honors the founders by continuing to work to raise money to help assure that single parents regardless of gender will be afforded the opportunity to continue their education. More than $810,000 has been awarded through WWA since its inception. Last year, more than $64,000 was distributed to 23 students. Find more information at www.GiveToWashburn.org/wwa.
