The Caboose has a New Look! We would like to thank the generosity of one of our newest chamber members, Protection Fence Company of Chester, for the installation of the new fence surrounding the caboose. The old fence had begun to fall apart after many years, affecting the way the Chamber Office and Visitor Center was viewed. We now have a beautiful wooden fence surrounding our office that welcomes chamber members and visitors alike.

Discover Warwick Valley is gaining momentum. We would like to graciously thank all who contributed voluntarily to the new tourism program. Your generosity has helped us to spread our reach even further. We have maintained a steady web and print presence, and increased the distribution of the Warwick Valley Guide. A traveling tourism group has paired up with I Love NY to represent the state at a series of EXPOs and travel shows across the country. The Warwick Valley Guide is being distributed to promote vacation planning at these events. Our staff recently worked an Americade event in Lake George, NY. Many from across the North American continent attended, exposure was phenomenal and we are looking forward to attending more of these shows to promote the Warwick Valley.

Resistant Compound Passes Transit Toxicity Test

Mechanical Rubber (www.mechanicalrubber.com) has developed a flame-resistant compound, MR35-70-46, which recently passed Bombardier SMP 800-C toxicity testing. A standard method used in the NFPA130, the SMP 800-C test analyzes toxic smoke gases produced when a test material is burned. The new compound also meets regulations for ASTM C1166 (flame propagation of elastomers), ASTM E162 (surface flammability of materials using a radiant heat energy source), ASTM E662 (specific optical density of smoke generated by solid materials), and ASTM E1354 (heat and visible smoke release rates for materials using an oxygen consumption calorimeter).

New STEM Enrichment Program for Children

Tina Bossio, President of Bricks 4 Kidz, resident of Sugar Loaf, and mom of an active two-year-old, introduces Bricks 4 Kidz to the Western Orange County area. It’s an enrichment program for children aged 2 to 13 which offers hands-on learning through proprietary theme-based LEGO model-builds developed by educators, architects and engineers. Kathryn Tate, a graduate from the University of Tennessee as a recipient of the Hodges’ full-academic scholarship and an honoree of the Grace Moore, “Tennessee Nightingale” scholarship for vocal excellence, has collected some of the greatest American poems in song, “The Great American Poet Sings”.

Accompanied by the elegant Joshua Tanis on piano, the talented duo elevates the two disciplines of words and music. The project gained local support and funding since its premiére at Warwick Grove for the completion of its upcoming CD scheduled for release sometime during the summer of 2014.

August has been declared Backpack Snack Attack Back to School Month in Warwick Township. Your participation ensures food for needy children on weekends for the next school year. Our March New Member’s Luncheon was hosted by Bill and Joe, the owners of The Inn at Stony Creek Bed and Breakfast. This warm establishment, with its cozy charming atmosphere and friendly service, makes its guests feel pampered and very much at home. The Inn is situated on nine acres with a small pond dotted with chickens and geese which enhance the beautiful view of the countryside. During your stay, be sure to enjoy the delicious breakfast of fruits and fresh eggs from their chickens. The Inn at Stony Creek is located at 34 Spanktown Road in Warwick.

Our Luncheon for the month of April was hosted by Michael DiMartino, the chef and owner of Landmark Inn. This 235-year-old restaurant has, not only a long history, but a distinct charm—even the ceilings are covered with decades-old doors and doorknobs. The restaurant is open for lunches and dinners, and the space is great for private parties and special events. Chef DiMartino has 25 years of experience, appearing in several top culinary magazines as well as on the Food Network’s “In Food Today.” His cuisine is not to be missed! The Landmark Inn is located at 526 Route 94 in Warwick.

May’s Luncheon was hosted by Smokey’s Brick Oven Tavern, located at 2 Vernon Crossing Road in Vernon, NJ. Smokey’s, best known for their brick-oven style pizza and smoked ribs that melt in your mouth, has quickly become the place to go for those who seek delicious, well-prepared food. Smokey’s also hosts events and live entertainment during the week, as well as on the weekends. On behalf of the Warwick Valley Chamber, I would like to thank all of these establishments for their generosity and hospitality.

Arbor Day in Sugar Loaf’s Margolis Park

Children from the Montessori School and Camp Aspire were on hand in Sugar Loaf’s Margolis Park for the Arbor Day tree planting sponsored by the Warwick Valley Garden Club. A day of fine weather with many in attendance set the stage for the inspirational and emotional tree dedication by Professor of History Dr. Richard Hull, and the poem read by Walter Kannon of the Barnsider Tavern.

Many thanks to Gene Frosini, Barry Sloan and Bob Valentine for digging holes, clearing weeds. The experience was one of community participation and enthusiasm, leaving all feeling lucky to be part of the rich history of the hamlet of Sugar Loaf.
