Season Outlook / Schedule Full of experience, Warriors set eyes on CCAA Tourney With six seniors, all projected starters, the Warriors will take the field in 2010 with their most experienced team since 2005. The veterans are looking to utilize the experience to lead Cal State Stanislaus to a second California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament appearance. “This is a really special group of seniors,” says Gabriel Bolton, who will begin his sixth season as head coach. “They have all been in our system for at least four years and have come a long way as a group. They also hold a special place in my heart because they represent my first recruiting class since coming back to Stanislaus in 2006.” The names of these six seniors have became household names here in Turlock with Lisa Garcia returning with many accolades from the 2009 season. Also among the senior class are Vanessa Cervantes, Briana McClain, Kim DiNardo, Jade Adamson and Heather Overholt. In addition, the Warriors return 10 starters from 2009. As usual Cal State Stanislaus will face one of the most difficult schedules in the country. In non-conference play the Warriors will take on NAIA power Fresno Pacific and GNAC opponent Western Oregon before kicking off conference play on September 10 at San Francisco State. The team goal is to return to the CCAA tournament and play in front of their home crowd. Warrior Stadium is the site of the 2010 CCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

Forwards

The Warriors’ experience is extremely appearent up front where McClain, a 2007 All-CCAA honorable mention, Adamson and Garcia are projected starters. McClain is coming off a medical redshirt year after suffering a broken leg. Her pace and aggressive mentality will be a challenge for opponents to contain. Adamson is a pure goal scorer who is known for hitting long-range blasts. Garcia, who set a new school record while leading the CCAA regular season with 11 goals last year, is a deceptive player with a knack for finding the back of the net. Garcia was rewarded for her breakout season with Daktronics/CoSIDA All-Region second team honors. She was also named to the All-CCAA second team.

2

Also returning at the forward position are two players — Marissa Dunaway and Rachel Naranjo — that had their 2009 season cut short by knee injuries. Dunaway led the team in goals with seven as a freshman in 2008. New to the team at the forward position are Karenee Demery and Liz Scherrer. Demery, an explosive attacking player from Merced, has the pace and soccer-smarts to breakdown defenses. Scherrer, a junior college transfer from Sierra College, is lethal in front of the goal. “We like to play fast and these players all have speed,” said Bolton. “But what really makes this group special is their experience in big games.”

Redshirt senior Kim DiNardo leads the Warriors in the midfield. A four-year starter at defensivemid, DiNardo was a 2008 All-CCAA honorable mention selection. Competing for playing time with DiNardo at that position will be sophomore Jennifer Thornton. Alexia Poon, Alisa Barlow, 2009 team rookie of the year Bernie Bettencourt and Nichole Meyer will all compete for a starting slot at attacking-midfield. Providing challenges to the returning four will be incoming freshmen Alyssa Robles and Allison Case. They will also be joined by Junior College All-American Tiffany Martin from American River College. “This is an extremely crafty group of midfielders,” noted Bolton. “They read the game very well and understand how to play effectively within our system.”

Defenders

TBD TBD TBD

Look for an experienced tandem in the Warrior backline as Overholt and 2009 team MVP Cervantes are expected to anchor the defense. Both are strong physical defenders who will bring tremendous leadership to the team.

The Warriors also return starting right back Shelby Cargile, who shut down some of the top forwards in the CCAA as a freshman last year. Also expect sophomore Sierra Casas to make an impact in the back after a tremendous spring season, said Bolton. Numerous new players will be counted on to contribute on defense. They include the freshmen trio of Allie Dugan, Janelle Triplett, and Emily Relles, as well as junior college transfer Salina Ortiz from Santa Ana College.

Goalkeepers

Millie Brown returns after an outstanding redshirt freshman season in 2009. Brown posted five shutouts in 11 starts with a .759 save percentage. She will be joined by freshmen Marriah Kessler and Morgan TorresUnger. “This is a terrific group of goalkeepers and I know they will develop under the coaching of Chris Malenab,” said Bolton. “I expect Millie will build on her strong freshman year and that Marriah and Morgan will challenge her for playing time.”

Head Coach GABRIEL BOLTON Head Coach Gabriel Bolton returned to Cal State Stanislaus as the women’s soccer head coach in 2006 after first serving as the head coach in 2001. He is now in his sixth season overall with the program and in 2008 became the Warriors’ winningest coach. In 2009, with a 10-9-1 record, Bolton led the Warriors to their eighth winning season in the last nine years. It was Bolton’s third 10-win season as he improved his personal record to 46-4310. Bolton helped direct the Warriors to an 11-8-1 overall finish in 2001. In the three years before his arrival, the program tallied just a 7-48-1 record. The Warriors were ranked the fourthmost improved women’s soccer program in the nation by the NCAA at the conclusion of the year. In 2007, the Warriors finished second in the CCAA North after posting a 10-8-2 overall and 7-5-2 conference records. In 2008, CSUS went 8-7-4 overall, giving the program seven winning seasons in the last eight years. After the 2001 season, Bolton left to become the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. During his three seasons at Utah, the Utes made three NCAA Division I tournament appearances, won the Mountain West Conference Championship tournament in 2003 and 2004 and posted an overall record of 42-12-8. The program was also ranked in the top 25 nationally all three seasons and in both 2003 and 2004, cracked the nation’s top 15 rankings. As recruiting coordinator with the Utes, Bolton recruited three nationally-ranked recruiting classes. In 2002 and 2004, his classes were ranked No. 37 in the country and in 2003 his class was ranked No. 17—the highest-ranked recruiting class in Utah and MWC history. During his three years at Utah, Bolton coached 14 all-conference players, 38 academic all-conference players, six NSCAA All-West Region players, five freshmen All-Americans, and two Verizon Academic All-Americans. Utah also received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award all three years. From 2005 to 2006, Bolton took over as the Girl’s Director of Coaching for the River City United soccer club in Sacramento. He was also the head coach for the RCU Boca Jrs. ‘91 (U14 girls) and RCU Boca Jrs. ‘90 (U15 girls). In 2006, Bolton led the Boca Jrs. ‘91 team to the Cal North State Cup Championship—the first State Cup Championship by an RCU girl’s team in the 38-year history of RCU. He also led the team to a Super Y League Pacific Division Championship and the Super Y League North American Finals, where the team finished second. His Boca Jrs. ‘90 team was two-time United States Club Region G Champions, advanced to U.S. Club Nationals in 2005, and won the 2006 U.S. Club National Championship in Bolton’s last game as coach of the team. In addition to coaching at the collegiate and club levels, Bolton has been heavily involved in soccer with the Olympic Development Program (ODP). He has served as assistant coach and head coach for the Cal North State Team. Bolton also spent two years as a head coach in Utah with the ODP. Bolton has coached numerous players that have gone on to play at the U.S. Youth National Team levels. He is also on the national staff for Super Y League ODP. Bolton has also coached at the Community College and High School levels. In 1998, he started the women’s soccer program at Sierra College and made it an instant success. His overall three-year record was 41-16-11 and he led the team to the California Community College playoffs in two of the three seasons, including the NorCal Regional Final Four in the second year of the program. In 1996, he turned around Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, leading them to the Capital Athletic League Championship his first season and the Division I Section Semi-Finals in 1998. While Bolton mostly coaches players, he is also extremely involved in developing coaches. In 2005, he became a certified trainer for the Positive Coaching Alliance. The PCA is a non-profit organization started in 1998 at Stanford University that trains coaches to coach using positive motivational techniques. As a trainer, Bolton puts on workshops throughout Northern California that gives youth coaches tools to positively motivate their players. Bolton Graduated from UC Davis in 1994 with his degree in political science and sociology. He earned his law degree in 1997 from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Bolton and his Wife Kathy, have a new-born daughter, Sophia (April, 2010).

2009 Season Review Warriors Continue Winning Tradition in 2009 For the eighth time since 2001, the Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer team posted a winning season when they went 10-9-1 in 2009. Under coach Gabriel Bolton, who was in his fifth season at the helm, the Warriors have posted three 10-win seasons. The Warriors managed their third consecutive winning year during the final match of the regular season — a 1-0 win at San Francisco State. “This was a good way to end the season. SF State is a very hard place to play because they are tough and physical and the surface is a challenge,” Warriors head coach Gabriel Bolton had said after the season finale. It was also during the season finale that junior Lisa Garcia put herself in the record books. Garcia’s score, with came in the 83rd minute of the match, was her 11th of the season, setting a new school record for goals in a season. She also led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in goals scored during the regular season. Garcia also finished the year with 27 points, which tied Marti Teunissen’s 2005 school-record total. With the breakout season Garcia was named to the All-CCAA second team, a week prior to being named to the Daktronics/CoSIDA All-Region second team. The 2009 squad got off to a fast start, posting four straight victories in non-conference play. The Warriors opened Warrior Stadium with a 3-0 shutout over Hawaii Hilo before disposing Fresno Pacific with the same score. Taking the show on the road in Nampa, Idaho, Stanislaus picked up two more shutouts with 1-0 and 4-0 wins over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, respectively. By the time the Warriors hit the conference portion of their schedule, they had four shutouts and 11 goals under their belt. The CCAA schedule, however, once again proved to be a challenge as it is each year. The Warriors started conference play with three one-goal setbacks on the road before a 4-0 loss to No. 13 UC San Diego in front of a record-setting home crowd to even their record at 4-4. On Sept. 18, against UC San Diego, in a

18

match the University dubbed as the Grand Opening match, celebrating the new Student Recreation Complex, the Warriors set a new conference and school record with 1,876 fans in attendance. It was also the second largest crowd to witness a NCAA Division II women’s soccer contest during 2009. The Warriors parlayed the tremendous fan support (more than 800 season tickets sold) to finishing first in the nation in average attendance with 973 per contest. During the middle part of the season — with Garcia finding the back of the net consistently and the backline and goalkeepers shutting down opponents — the Warriors hit stride and posted a 3-2-1 record during a six-match stretch. A perfect weekend led to a sweep of San Francisco State (3-0 win) and Cal State Monterey Bay (2-0 win) on Oct. 2 & Oct. 4. The only two losses were two more onegoal setbacks, on the road, to eventual West Regional tournament qualifiers Cal State Dominguez Hills and the then-ranked No. 14 Cal State L.A. After two more road defeats — yes, two more one-goal losses — the Warriors finished with three wins in their final four contests for the winning campaign. In the end, Stanislaus lost eight matches by one goal with seven of them on the road. Defending their house, the Stanislaus women went 6-2-1 at Warrior Stadium with the only two losses to UC San Diego and Sonoma State (yes, by one goal). Unfortunately, injuries to key personnel

prevented the Warriors from reaching their goal of participanting in the CCAA conference championship tournament, which was held at Warrior Stadium. Marissa Dunaway, who led the team in scoring as a freshman, missed eight matches. Speedy forward Rachel Naranjo played in just two contests before tearing her ACL. Forward Jade Adamson and goalkeeper Millie Brown were both sidelines with serious injuries for multiple games. The Warriors were also without senior captain Briana McClain for the entire season because she was still recovering from a broken leg. The injuries did allow a number of other Warriors to step-in, which included Garcia taking over on the attack. Senior Alena Smajalgic was second on the team with three goals — all of them game-winners. The injuries also provided more playing time and ultimately led to the emergence of three freshmen such as team rookie of the year Bernie Bettencourt, Shelby Cargile and Apryl Whitney. In the middle of the field, Alisa Barlow, Alexia Poon, Kim DiNardo helped controlled the Warriors game. Defensively, team most valuable player Vanessa Cervantes and Heather Overholt anchored the defense. The defensive unit helped the team record nine shutouts, split between goalkeepers Brown (5) and senior Jessica Sitarz (4), in their 10 victories — an accomplishment the Warriors hope to repeat in 2010.

E-Mail: rjhiegert@goccaa.org Home: (925) 634-4838 The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference.

On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). In 2010, Cal Poly Pomona captured the men’s basketball title. CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Location. Location. Location.

Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immediately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public campuses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing architectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Student Life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President ’s Message 2010-11 President’s Message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking. CSU Stanislaus is the only CSU campus listed among Princeton Review’s “Best 373 Colleges” in the United States. Warrior fans also deserve applause for turning out in increasingly strong numbers. The new 24-acre Student Recreation Complex has helped attract fans to some great home games. Soccer alone had the strongest average attendance among Division II schools last year. Cheered on by loyal fans, the men’s soccer team tied a school record with 11 victories and Victor Regalado became the University’s first All-American in men’s soccer. Three other student-athletes were also declared All-American. Pole vaulter Annie Burlingham made the first-team selection in women’s pole vault. Golfers Brandon Taylor and Trevor Blair earned All-American status as they led the Warriors to another National Championship appearance. Two of our coaches were honored by their peers as they were named CCAA Coach of the Year: John Cook of Men’s Golf and Verek Visaraga of Women’s Tennis. Warrior athletes once again demonstrated that their ability to succeed is not limited to the field. Thirty-one CSU Stanislaus student athletes had GPAs of 3.4 or higher, which is one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. The spotlight on CSU Stanislaus athletics is only getting brighter as the University will host three major championship events this academic year. We will host the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in May, 2011. Two CCAA conference tournaments will be held on campus. The Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships will be held in November, 2010. The CCAA Track & Field Championships will be held in May, 2011. The academic and athletic achievements of CSU Stanislaus’ student athletes are to be commended. I encourage you to show your support for these fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding teams. Go Warriors!

Academic Advising & Support Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. AMYE LEON Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consisAcademic Advisor tently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

TUTORING AND STUDY HALL

A Special program for first semester freshmen

Academic tutoring is available through the Tutoring Center on campus. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor will also establish a regular study hall program for all student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor is available to monitor the progress of each student-athlete and to ensure his/her academic success. The Tutoring Center is available on a “drop-in” basis with peer tutors in specific subject areas. Student-athletes can make an appointment with a specific tutor to address a specific academic challenge that they face. Any student-athlete with a learning disability can receive assistance by utilizing the resources available at the CSU Stanislaus Counseling Center and Testing Services. All resources available at the counseling and testing centers are designed to assist all students with learning disabilities and to provide the appropriate tools or techniques to address the disability to assure success at the college level. The Athletic Advisor, departmental academic advisor or team head coach will assist you in utilizing these services in a confidential manner. The Athletics Department Student-Athlete Study Hall Program has been established to assist at-risk studentathletes to utilize appropriate study habits and time management skills to succeed in the classroom.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. Student Recreation Complex The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007. The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities.

“We are very grateful Warrior Stadium to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in single-game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational.
