Neale Daniher awarded Australian of the Year
With AAP
Neale Daniher’s diagnosis of motor neurone disease came with an expectancy he would have a little more than two years left to live on average.
Twelve years later, the AFL legend has united the nation in the fight against the debilitating condition, spearheading a campaign that has raised millions of dollars in research for a long-awaited cure.
Among the many accolades the sporting hero and coach has achieved over the years, he can add another to the long list: Australian of the Year.
“Our vision is simple: a world without MND. Some may call it a dream, but I don’t believe it is an impossible one,” Neale said through a prerecorded audio speech upon accepting the award.
“This disease is not incurable. It is simply underfunded and misunderstood. With focus, funding and unwavering determination, we can change that.”
Neale said his journey and battle against motor neurone disease could not have been done alone, and being awarded Australian of the Year was a way to thank people for their support.
“To everyone who has bought a beanie, donated a dollar or spread the world, thank you. You are proof that when Australians unite, nothing is impossible,” he said.
“I know that this nomination will help grow awareness for our cause so that together, as Australians, we can continue this fight against the beast and one day achieve our vision: a world without MND.”

Neale played more than 80 games for Essendon between 1979 and 1990 in a career plagued by injuries, before he transitioned to coaching, leading Melbourne from 1998 to 2007.
But it was his diagnosis of MND in 2013 that led him to become a tireless campaigner for a cure for the disease, helping to set up the FightMND charity.
The organisation has helped to raise more than $100 million into research for the condition, with the charity’s Big Freeze fundraiser at the King’s Birthday AFL match becoming a leading fixture in the code’s calendar.

The primary objective of R & G Specialist Support Service is to provide personalized assistance and improve the quality of life for our participants.
We also strive to create opportunities for the individuals in our
community and help them achieve their goals.

Moving Forward

West Gippsland Healthcare Group is going through a period of exciting growth and change as it navigates a booming population, state healthcare reforms and planning the construction of a new hospital.
With a history dating back to 1888, WGHG now operates across sites in Warragul, Trafalgar and Rawson and serves an estimated population of 60,644 people.
Planning for the New West Gippsland Hospital is now well underway, including feasibility studies, authority approvals and a Cultural Heritage Management Plan for the site.
The new hospital will deliver more beds, a bigger emergency department and more operating theatres - helping more locals get the care and treatment they need, closer to home.
WGHG is also looking forward to a more connected healthcare system under the Health Services Plan.
Under the plan, new healthcare networks will be established to strengthen partnerships between healthcare providers and streamline the delivery of services.
Where community is key
West Gippsland Healthcare Group is rooted in community and continues to have its strong support to this day.
Locals established the hospital in 1888 on land donated by Mary Sargeant, a member of an early settler family. Volunteers, donations and fundraising activities remain a valued and vital part of WGHG operations.

Community groups and families such as The Andrews Foundation, Pharaoh’s Secret Angels, and daffodil growers, the Blythe family, have contributed funds or run fundraising events for specific causes including oncology and Allied and Community Health. Snowfest most recently came on board, donating funds raised from the event to an item on the hospital’s annual appeal list.
WGHG has been lucky to have the long-term support of local service clubs including Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Community Banks and
individuals, whose contributions have funded equipment that is not covered by government funding. This has included stretcher trolleys, ECG machines, ventilators and many other items across WGHG departments, including emergency, maternity, haemodialysis and aged care.
Volunteers also make an enormous contribution to WGHG, giving their time to provide company for aged care residents, concierge guidance to hospital visitors, gardening and woodworking support for rehabilitation and other allied health departments, and customer service support at Drouin Auxiliary Opportunity Shop and Trafalgar and District Opportunity Shop.
For more information visit www.wghg.com.au and explore our news section or navigate to the Donate and About Us pages.

Where everyone is welcome

WGHG welcomes people of all ages, cultures and communities. The organisation marks NAIDOC Week with an annual flag-raising ceremony and last year welcomed Gippsland Pride Initiative Inc to its community health centre in Trafalgar, where it operates a resource hub.
West Gippsland Healthcare Group serves a diverse, rural-urban population.
To ensure everyone feels safe and supported, the organisation fosters several initiatives that nurture people of all ages, cultures and communities.
Initiatives include the Youth Representative Group, established to help improve care and communication for young patients and clients; monthly Aboriginal Health Yarns to provide health information, discussion and community engagement for the Aboriginal community; an Aboriginal Liaison Officer and Aboriginal Community Health Worker to support Aboriginal patients and clients; and the Pride Hub run by Gippsland Pride Initiative Inc at WGHG’s Trafalgar House to provide support and resources to the LGTBIQA+ community.
The organisation celebrates days aligned with these initiatives, supports events run by partner organisations and continues to educate its staff about diversity and inclusion.

Work local, learn local
West Gippsland Healthcare Group has a workforce of 1565 people and partners with several education providers to offer learning and employment opportunities.
Opportunities include the Graduate Enrolled Nurse Program, Graduate Nurse/Midwifery Program and the Undergraduate Nursing Fellowship Program.
A new collaboration with Community College Gippsland and other local job-finder and skillbuilding groups aims to prepare candidates for vital laundry, food services and cleaning roles at West Gippsland Hospital.
The program strives to support individuals facing job barriers such as low literacy, language or numeracy skills.
With its headquarters in Warragul, just an hour’s drive from Melbourne, WGHG offers an attractive work environment and rural lifestyle.
The region is renowned for its easy access to the snowfields, wilderness and beaches, and its vibrant community, arts and culture.

Building resilience: strength focus in psychology
In the realm of psychology, the concept of strength focus has gained significant attention as a means to enhance individual well-being and performance.
This approach emphasises identifying and cultivating personal strengths rather than merely addressing weaknesses.
By recognising and leveraging inherent talents and positive traits, individuals can foster a more resilient and empowered mindset.
Over the last decade, resilience has been significantly challenged by numerous global events, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic.

This unprecedented crisis has tested the limits of individuals and communities worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for effective resilience-building strategies.

Building resilience is a dynamic and multifaceted process that involves personal attributes, social support systems, and environmental influences.
By adopting effective coping strategies, individuals can enhance their ability to adapt to adversity, grow from challenges, and maintain mental well-being.
Resilience is not a fixed trait but a skill that can be developed and strengthened over time, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.
Ultimately, embracing a strength-focused perspective in psychology aligns with the broader goal of promoting human flourishing.

By shifting the focus from deficits to assets, individuals and communities can unlock their full potential and navigate life’s challenges with greater resilience and optimism.
In conclusion, the integration of strength focus in building resilience offers a powerful method for fostering individual and collective adaptability.
By shifting the narrative from weaknesses to strengths, we can cultivate a more resilient, empowered, and thriving society capable of facing life’s inevitable challenges with optimism and fortitude.

Osteopaths -treating the cause of the pain
Established in 2007, Our experienced team at Warragul Osteopathic Clinic have been caring for the Baw Baw community for almost 17 years. They pride themselves on their team approach to care, individual patient rapport and commitment to continued professional development.
Osteopathy is a form of hands-on healthcare which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions.
Osteopaths focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a whole unit.
All of the Osteopaths at Warragul Osteopathic Clinic have completed a five year university degree and are government registered primary healthcare professionals.

is a safe and gentle form of manual healthcare for all ages from newborns to the elderly.

An osteopathic approach to treatment is unique; as it looks at the body as a whole unit with all parts interconnected and relying on each other to function at its optimum.
Dr Tania McDonald says, “Treatment is not just aimed at the site of pain, but often an Osteopath will treat several regions of the body to address the true cause of the pain, or where the problem may have actually started.”
Osteopaths also give rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle advice to get you back on track as quickly as possible.
Common presentations at their clinic include low back pain and sciatica, neck pain and headaches, sports injuries, tendinitis, postural pain and problems, pregnancy related pain, arthritis, and children and babies.
Osteopathy is a safe and gentle form of manual healthcare for all ages from newborns to the elderly.
The clinic is at 24 Gladstone Street, Warragul and is open Monday –Thursday 8.30am-6pm, and Fridays 8.30am-4.30pm.

Free support for mental health and wellbeing
In Victoria there are currently 60,000 Victorians providing support and mental health care to family and friends often going by un-supported themselves.
Fortunately, we are here to help.
Our team provides peer support for carers and supporters of someone with mental health challenges, substance use challenges or neurodiversity.
All workers at the Connect Centres are peer workers - this means we all have lived or living experience of being a carer or supporter of someone living with mental health challenges, substance use challenges or who is neurodivergent.
We use our experience to focus on creating a safe space where we can share practical information, emotional support and knowledge to support a carer on their personal recovery journey.
We offer drop in centres in two locations in the Gippsland region, where you can access peer support, access to resources, support with navigating the mental health & wellbeing system and advocacy support.

To access support feel free to call or pop in and see us in Traralgon or Bairnsdale, you will not need a professional referral to access support at Connect Gippsland.
We are holding groups and support groups in both Centres.
“We are here to listen. Everyone has their own story and we want to hear yours.”
