THE GAINSBOROUGH ACADEMY’S CHAIR OF GOVERNORS SHORTLISTED IN THE NATIONAL SCHOOL AWARDS

The Gainsborough Academy (TGA), part of Wickersley Partnership Trust (WPT), is delighted to announce that its Chair of Governors, Shaun Flynn, has been shortlisted for the Governor of the Year Award in the National School Awards 2025.

This national recognition highlights Shaun’s outstanding contribution to school governance and his lasting impact on students, staff and the wider Gainsborough community.

TGA serves a community with high levels of socioeconomic deprivation, with some areas ranking among the top 10% most deprived in England in terms of employment, health, crime and education. Against this backdrop, Shaun has provided stability, vision and leadership as Chair of Governors for several years, ensuring governance that makes a real difference to both students and staff.

Under Shaun’s guidance, the school has seen significant progress, including:

Improved attendance since 2021/22.

Strengthened behaviour and wellbeing systems, ensuring a safer, more inclusive environment.

Rebuilt community confidence through initiatives such as Proud to be TGA, where Shaun plays an active and trusted role.

Increased governance capacity, through mentoring fellow governors and supporting recruitment.

Shaun’s commitment has helped shape a school culture where students remain at the heart of decision-making, contributing directly to TGA’s continued improvement and success.

Helen O’Brien, CEO at Wickersley Partnership Trust, said: “We are delighted that Shaun has been recognised on a national level and is up for the Governor of the Year Award. It is fantastic to see The Gainsborough Academy go from strength to strength, and Shaun has played a huge part in that through his practical and student-focused governance.

“His strategic oversight, along with his genuine understanding of Gainsborough and the school community, have been crucial in ensuring that board-level decisions lead to real improvements for both our staff and students. We’re incredibly grateful to have him chairing governance at TGA and playing such an influential role across Wickersley Partnership Trust. We wish him the best of luck at the awards.”

Rachael Skelton, Headteacher at The Gainsborough Academy, added: “Shaun is

an integral part of the leadership at The Gainsborough Academy. His commitment to our school goes above and beyond – he is always available to offer support and advice to staff and students. I would personally like to thank him for his continued support and the role he has played in our ongoing improvements.”

WPT is also celebrating the achievement of Lee Rushforth, Director of Estates, who has been shortlisted for the Estates Management of the Year Award. Lee has led transformative projects across the Trust, particularly in some of the most deprived areas of South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, improving sustainability, safety and inclusivity across multiple schools.

The National School Awards 2025 will take place in December at the House of Lords in London, where winners across all categories will be announced.

FIRST LINCOLNSHIRE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM £500,000 BURSARY

The bursary is sponsored by broadband provider, Quickline Communications

50 students studying technical subjects through the Lincolnshire Institute of Technology have become the first to receive a bursary that aims to make education more accessible.

The Quickline Communications bursary supports students from underrepresented groups, including mature students, parents, people from low income families, people with a disability and people who were previously in care.

Each student has received a grant of up to £1,000 for things such as laptops, headphones, desk chairs and cameras, as well as travel expenses and course fees.

Catherine (Cam) Reeves is one of these students and is currently completing a course at Grantham College. They said: “I was born in the UK and my education began here, but my family moved to South Africa before I could complete it. I wanted to return to the UK to obtain a degree only to find that, as I hadn’t been living in the UK for the last three years, I would be unable to access the student loan system.

“The Quickline Communications bursary fund has been a life saver and has enabled me to continue with my studies and live away from home. With the support from the bursary, I am confident that I will be able to complete my level 4 in Film and TV.”

Mick Lochran, Director of the Lincolnshire Institute of Technology, said: “It’s fantastic to see that our partnership with Quickline Communications has started to truly make a difference to our students.

“We believe that everyone has the right to access education and gain the skills they need to succeed, and the bursary is helping us to remove the barriers that underrepresented groups face when enrolling for, attending and achieving higher-level technical qualifications.”

Julian Chalk, Head of Engagement and Enablement at Quickline Communications, added: “It’s great to hear that the bursary has already benefited 50 students who are studying technical subjects across Lincolnshire.

“We’re big on accessibility and inclusivity, and it’s a key part of what we do - connecting rural communities that have been left behind by other providers. Now, we’re not only ensuring everyone has access to decent broadband but we’re also ensuring that everyone has access to the education they need to thrive in a STEM career.”

“THIS CAN REALLY HELP PEOPLE”: RESIDENTS IMPRESSED BY GRIMSBY TOGETHER PROJECT

People living and working in Grimsby believe change is on the way thanks to a major £20 million scheme designed to transform the town through the voice of the community.

Grimsby Together is shaping the town for the better – led by those who live here, work here and believe in listening to the community.

Aided by Our Future – an organisation that invests itself in supporting communities to effect long-term change – working in partnership with the Greater Grimsby Board and North East Lincolnshire Council, Grimsby Together will look at how to best invest the Plan for Neighbourhoods grant funding.

The Government’s Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) last year changed the focus of the Long-Term Plan for Towns funding scheme.

Now called Plan for Neighbourhoods, 75 areas – one being Grimsby – were awarded a total funding pot of £1.5-billion (up to £20m for each area over 10 years) with a focus on involving communities in decision making of how and where the money should go.

Recently, the project concluded the latest round of working groups, focusing on key topics like business and housing.

With a range of opinions from 80 local leaders,

teams can now feed these insights into the plan that will be submitted to Government, detailing what is to be done with some of the £20 million.

At a recent event at Central Hall in Grimsby, residents were invited to come and see what ideas and investment opportunities will feed into the plan. Joining them were members of the Council, Our Future and those who took part in the workshops.

Julie Walmsley, CEO of Doorstep and head of the Safe and Secure Housing Working Group, added: “This isn’t just people sat in a room deciding what money goes where without asking anyone, it’s open and transparent and really takes into account the views of the whole community.

“Bringing those people together has ensured we’re getting what’s best for the town and I’m sure this is just the start of something much bigger for Grimsby.”

One Grimbarian, Ian Blakemore, has lived in Hull for 15 years, but made the trip back to his hometown to see what Grimsby Together was all about.

“This is my hometown and I want to see it get better over the next decade. This funding can really help people and the different groups around the area.

“I’ve no doubt that the future is a positive one for this town and with projects like this utilising the community we have, it can become a reality.”

Another local resident and founder of Clee W Fest, Jason Hare, believes, like Ian, that this project can mark the start of a new era for the town.

“There are so many people doing great stuff in this town and this funding can make sure they can continue to do so.

“If you look at it almost like seed money, it could really make Grimsby a better place for everyone.”

Now, the Grimsby Together team will be putting ideas from these events and the working groups into a formal plan to be put to Government in November, detailing how the community would like to spend the funding.

A SKEGNESS OPEN TOP ADVENTURE

GRIMSBY TOGETHER: PROJECT TAKES NEXT STEP IN CREATING BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR TOWN

A major scheme that will support Grimsby’s positive future and see up to £20m invested across our town has taken its next step.

‘Grimsby Together’ will help to change the town for the better – and is being led by those who live here, who work here and who believe in our communities.

Now called Plan for Neighbourhoods, 75 areas – one being Grimsby - were awarded a total funding pot of £1.5-billion (up to £20m for each area over 10 years) with a focus on involving communities in decision making of how and where the money should go.

Now, Grimsby Together are pushing on with people who have a passion for the town coming together to see how the funding can best be used. The second round of workshop meetings are now underway, with one of the first working groups focused on “thriving business and town centre”, led by E Factor Director Mark Webb, exploring physical and digital connectivity amongst other things.

“Today’s workshop really focused on bringing together what can only be described as fans of Grimsby, people have invested themselves, their businesses and their lives into this town.

“We want to understand what is possible for Grimsby and make sure this town gets what it deserves,” said Mark.

He added: “The whole project is about making sure there is a strong voice for the future of Grimsby.”

Leader of North East

Lincolnshire Council and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Economy, Devolution and Skills, Cllr Philip Jackson, said: “Grimsby Together is a great opportunity for our town. We are already undertaking one of the biggest transformations in the area’s history in our town centre with the redevelopment of Freshney Place, and this can only be a positive addition to that.

“Grimsby Together will help to shape the future of different areas of our town and it is great that investment will be led by the ideas of local organisations and people who are dedicated to improving the lives of residents and visitors.”

Emily Bolton Co-Founder and CEO of Our Future, added: “What stands out most to me is the commitment and love for the town that binds the people involved. Our 8 working groups and taskforce are made up of 80 local leaders, coming together across different sectors.

“They are all working in the collective good of the town and care deeply that we are building a thriving place for future generations. It is a joy to work alongside them developing the plan for Grimsby’s future that we can all own and bring to reality.”

More workshops will be taking place throughout September, discussing key themes like the environment, communities and housing. The public are also invited to an event on Thursday, 25 September, from 3pm-6pm at Grimsby Central Hall to listen to these ideas and have their say on how Grimsby can be improved.

PETER HOOK & THE LIGHT

ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER 2025 UK TOUR DATES COMING TO LINCOLN – ENGINE SHED ON THURSDAY 27TH NOVEMBER.

PETER HOOK & THE LIGHT will perform the New Order album Get Ready in its entirety, alongside a selection of the most seminal tracks from the rich back catalogues of both Joy Division and New Order.

“Get Ready was a honeymoon record. Looking back now it was very enjoyable to make, and I think is massively underrated. It did sort the wheat from the chaff and led to a New Order mk2 which played better but had lost a naivety whilst gaining a maturity. Barney and I became a ‘power couple’ in Manchester during the making of the record but, sadly, the old problems recurred when we came to play live. The writing was on the wall from then on. The two of us worked very hard to make this a great record and I think we succeeded. I am looking forward to playing all the tracks, many of which have never been played live before. The Light will shine through … Get Ready!”

Get Ready was released in 2001 and reached #2 on the US Billboard Electronic album chart and #6 in the UK album chart. It was the seventh studio album from New Order and was dedicated by the band to Rob Gretton, the manager of both Joy Division and New Order, who had died in 1999.

Peter Hook first revisited the seminal Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures back in May 2010 for a commemorative charity concert and has followed it each year by performing subsequent albums from the repertoire of his bands, Joy Division and New Order. His dedication to his back catalogue has now seen him move through Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Still, Movement, Power Corruption & Lies, Low Life, Brotherhood, Technique, Republic and Substance to arrive at the Get Ready album in 2025. Having toured the albums extensively, the band have now amassed over 800 concerts.

Tickets start at £38.00 for the above shows and are available from https://www.thegigcartel.com/Artists-profiles/Peter-Hook-The-Light.htm

SEASONAL FINDS AND FESTIVE PREPARATIONS

As October arrives, shopping habits naturally begin to shift. The lighter summer purchases give way to cosier essentials, and thoughts inevitably turn towards the months ahead. For many households, October is the perfect time to start planning, whether that means refreshing wardrobes with warmer layers, stocking up on seasonal home décor, or simply getting a head start on Christmas preparations.

High streets across Lincolnshire are already reflecting this seasonal change, with windows dressed in autumn tones and shelves stocked with everything from chunky knitwear to festive teas and early gift ideas. Shopping locally not only adds charm to the experience but also supports independent retailers who bring unique character to towns and villages across the county. For those who love browsing markets, October is a wonderful month to discover artisanal crafts, homemade bakes, and speciality produce.

Of course, October is also a sensible time to start thinking ahead to Christmas. While it may feel early, planning now avoids the last-minute rush and ensures you don’t miss out on the best local offerings. Preordering Christmas meat hampers from local butchers is a particularly practical step. These hampers, often filled with carefully sourced cuts of turkey, beef, gammon, or lamb, take the stress out of festive catering

while supporting trusted local suppliers. Many butchers also include sausages, bacon, and stuffing mixes, offering everything you need for a traditional family feast. Ordering in advance not only guarantees quality but also provides peace of mind, leaving you free to enjoy December’s festivities without worry.

Beyond food, Lincolnshire’s independent shops and boutiques are an excellent source of thoughtful Christmas gifts. Handmade jewellery, locally distilled gins, and artisan chocolates are just some of

the unique finds that add a personal touch to seasonal giving. For those who enjoy creating a festive atmosphere at home, October is the perfect month to pick up candles, wreaths, and twinkling lights before the holiday rush.

Shopping in October is about more than ticking items off a list—it’s about savouring the season and enjoying the experience. Whether you’re strolling through a bustling market square, placing an order with your favourite butcher, or simply adding an extra cosy throw to your living room, these small steps help create a smoother, more enjoyable build-up to Christmas.

So, as the leaves crunch underfoot and evenings grow darker, take time this October to shop with intention. Supporting Lincolnshire’s local businesses now will not only bring joy to your home but also to the community around you.

I AIN’T AFRAID OF NO GHOSTS!

From Ghostbusters to Halloween nostalgia, artists embrace film, TV and spooky traditions to create imaginative, colourful works celebrating community and creativity.

Throughout history, artists have been inspired by popular culture, there are an abundance of pieces based on Shakespeare’s plays and Greek mythology. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that in our age of the most advanced media and technology ever seen, that modern artists are inspired by cinema and television just as much as they are by the natural world! Whether it’s the cult classics such as Ghostbusters or the Joker from DC Comics, or something a little more obscure, artists recreate anything that sparks their imagination and passion.

But never forget the power of nostalgia. Some experiences are universal, like dressing up with friends as your favourite characters! The joy in communities coming together to provide treats for the little visiting monsters one night a year, and in being those little monsters and heroes, is so compelling that it’s no wonder artists come back to express it time and time again.

So never be ashamed to celebrate the spooky, the creepy, and the frightening in this month of darkening skies and windy nights! They’re filled with joy and colour, if you know where to look.

HALLOWEEN FUN

FOR ALL THE FAMILY

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect excuse to embrace the season with a little creativity, fun, and adventure. From picking the perfect pumpkin to discovering family-friendly events, there are plenty of ways to make this spooky season magical.

One of the highlights of October is heading out to choose your very own pumpkin. Local garden centres and farm shops are a great place to start, with a wide range of sizes and shapes to suit every carving idea. Whether you’re after a classic round orange pumpkin for a traditional lantern or something quirky and unusual to stand out on the doorstep, shopping local gives you plenty of choice while supporting community businesses. Many centres also add to the experience with seasonal displays, making it a fun outing in itself.

Once you’ve picked your pumpkin, it’s time to get carving. Children love scooping out the insides, sketching spooky faces,

and watching their creations glow once a candle or light is placed inside. For those who prefer a less messy option, pumpkin painting is growing in popularity, offering a colourful twist without the need for sharp tools. However you decorate yours, displaying it proudly outside the house will add to the Halloween spirit in your neighbourhood.

Of course, Halloween isn’t just about pumpkins. Across the region, there are plenty of events to entertain children and families. From themed trails at local attractions to fancy-dress discos and storytelling evenings, there’s something for all ages. Many towns and villages also host organised trick-or-treat events, offering a safe and friendly way for children to dress up and collect sweets. Some garden centres even run craft workshops where

youngsters can make decorations or bake seasonal treats.

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, pumpkin festivals and farm-based events often combine picking your own with rides, mazes, and outdoor games. For those who enjoy a thrill, there are usually haunted houses and ghost walks tailored to older children and teenagers. Lincolnshire in particular is known for its historic sites, which often host spine-tingling tours during the Halloween period, adding a unique twist to the celebrations.

For parents, Halloween is as much about making memories as it is about costumes and sweets. Planning a family day out, baking themed goodies, or even hosting a small gathering at home can all create lasting traditions. With so many local events and plenty of pumpkins ready to be carved, this October promises plenty of opportunities to get into the spooky spirit.

PREPARING FOR THE SEASON AHEAD

October is one of the most colourful months of the year. The days grow shorter, the air turns crisp, and gardens glow with rich shades of russet, amber and gold. Indoors, the pull towards warmth and comfort becomes stronger, while outdoors there are still plenty of gardening tasks to enjoy before winter sets in. With a little preparation, both home and garden can feel ready to embrace the season ahead.

BRING AUTUMN INDOORS

October lends itself beautifully to warm, comforting décor. Think layers of texture – knitted throws, woollen cushions and soft lighting from lamps and candles. Natural touches work especially well at this time of year: wicker baskets for logs, bowls filled with apples or squash, and dried flower arrangements that echo the tones of the season. Pumpkins, too, aren’t just for carving – smaller ornamental varieties make lovely displays in kitchens, hallways and dining rooms.

Scent also plays a big role in creating atmosphere. Candles or diffusers with hints of cinnamon, clove and orange add a seasonal touch, instantly making your home feel more inviting.

ESSENTIAL GARDENING JOBS

Although the main growing season is drawing to a close, there’s still plenty to do in the garden. October is the ideal month to plant spring bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and crocuses – a small effort now will reward you with colour when winter finally

lifts. Clear away fallen leaves, tidy borders, and prune shrubs to keep everything neat. Raise pots onto feet to prevent waterlogging, and wrap delicate plants in fleece before the first frost arrives.

Don’t neglect the lawn: a light rake, autumn feed and aeration will help it stay healthy through winter. Wildlife can also benefit from thoughtful gardening. Leave some seed heads and berry-laden shrubs for birds, and pile leaves in a quiet corner for hedgehogs looking for shelter.

WINTER IS COMING

As we head towards the colder months, October is the perfect time to think about making your home warm and efficient. Draught-proofing, servicing the boiler and checking insulation all help to keep energy bills under control. If your uPVC windows have misted-up units or simply feel tired, now’s an ideal opportunity to replace them. New glazing not only improves warmth and energy efficiency, but also refreshes the look of your home – a smart investment before winter really sets in.

COMFORT AND COSINESS

Outdoors, fire pits, lanterns and soft blankets extend the season, allowing you to enjoy crisp evenings under the stars. Indoors, embrace hearty cooking – pumpkin soups, apple crumbles and spiced bakes – filling the home with warming aromas.

A SEASON OF PREPARATION

October strikes the perfect balance between enjoying the beauty of autumn and looking ahead to the colder months. With a few essential gardening jobs completed, some simple home improvements, and a focus on comfort indoors, you can create a space that feels both welcoming and practical. By preparing now, you’ll be ready to face winter with confidence, knowing your home and garden are perfectly set for the season ahead.

PUMPKINS, SPARKLES AND FESTIVE MAGIC AT

Humber Bridge Garden Centre

This autumn marks an exciting new chapter for Humber Bridge Garden Centre as we proudly open our very first pumpkin patch. While the pumpkins aren’t homegrown, the experience certainly is – crafted with care to bring joy to families, couples and friends alike. Set against the gorgeous backdrop of the Humber Bridge and its sweeping views, our pumpkin patch offers the perfect photo opportunity as you choose the ideal pumpkin for carving, decorating or baking.

To make the season even more memorable, we’ve lined up a range of special events. On 23 October, we’re hosting Little Squashlings’ Day – a soft opening of the patch just for under-5s, running from 11am to 2pm. There will also be pumpkin-carving sessions to spark creativity, a special Twilight Picking evening on 30 October, and a Dog-Friendly Day on 31 October, so your four-legged friends can join in the fun too.

After exploring the patch, continue the fun inside. Our Food Hall is stocked with seasonal treats to inspire your autumn kitchen, from hearty bakes to spiced indulgences. Meanwhile, our restaurant is the perfect spot to relax – whether you’re warming up with a coffee and cake after pumpkin picking, or enjoying a hearty meal with loved ones.

As the days grow shorter, our attention turns to Christmas, and here at Humber

Bridge Garden Centre we’re ready to make the festive period truly magical. Mulled wine will flow, twinkling lights will sparkle, and we’ve curated a calendar of events designed to bring you joyfully through the season –from craft workshops and wreath-making sessions to psychic afternoon teas and latenight shopping experiences.

The Garden Centre itself transforms into a festive haven, with shelves and displays filled with thoughtful gifts – from beautiful home décor to seasonal decorations. It’s the perfect place to tick off your Christmas list without the stress of the high street. Our team has carefully selected a wide range of products to suit every budget, making it easy to find something special for everyone.

And of course, no Christmas is complete without the perfect tree. You’ll be able to browse our beautiful selection of real Christmas trees, freshly cut and ready to take pride of place in your home. THE BENEFITS OF LANDSCAPING IN WINTER

Autumn is the perfect time to start thinking about a garden redesign – even if you’re planning to take on some of the work yourself. In fact, having landscaping carried out during the winter months offers several key advantages:

COST SAVINGS ON MATERIALS

Many landscaping materials are less expensive in winter due to lower demand. By planning your project now, you could benefit from significant savings before prices rise again in spring.

FASTER PROJECT COMPLETION

Professional landscapers tend to be less busy in winter, meaning they can often start your project sooner and complete it more quickly. You’re less likely to face the long lead times that often occur in spring and summer.

MINIMAL IMPACT ON PLANTS

Hard landscaping work can sometimes disturb existing plants. However, during the winter months, most plants are dormant, so the risk of long-term damage is greatly reduced.

BE READY FOR SUMMER

By getting your project done over winter, you’ll be ready to enjoy your new outdoor space as soon as the warmer weather arrives. While others are still waiting for their landscaper to become available, you’ll be relaxing in your beautifully transformed garden.

There are a few things to keep in mind; Weather: Heavy rain or snow may occasionally delay work. However, frostproof additives can be used in cement and mortar mixes, and new work can be protected overnight with plastic sheeting, sacking, or blankets.

Daylight Hours: With shorter days in winter, most outdoor work needs to finish earlier for safety reasons. That said, we’ve even used floodlighting in the past to help meet deadlines when needed.

Planting Timing:

While some planting is best left until spring, the bulk of your landscaping can be completed now. You’ll then be free to add the finishing touches when the weather improves.

Contact us today to find out how we can transform your garden and have it ready for you to enjoy next spring.

DOBBIES NEW BULBS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH UK

SET TO RAISE £10,000 FOR CHARITY, AVAILABLE AT THE BOSTON STORE

Dobbies Garden Centres has launched a brand-new charity bulb collection, available at its Boston store, that aims to raise £10,000 for its National Charity Partner, Alzheimer’s Research UK, which would fund up to 278 hours of scientists’ lab time.

The new, limited-edition Sensory Garden 15 Bulbs Collection is now available, at the Boston store and online, as part of Dobbies’ activity to raise awareness of World Alzheimer’s Month.

The collection of colourful and fragrant bulbs, priced at £15, is designed to create a

captivating sensory garden and includes the striking Allium Purple Rain that engages the senses of sight and touch; Narcissus Bridal Crown, known for its bright and scented blooms; Tulip Blushing Apeldoorn, with its colourful bobbing flowers; and Tulip Purple Rain, adding a bold and dramatic finish to displays.

Five pounds from each pack sold at the Boston store will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK to help raise funds to find a cure for dementia. Dobbies has raised almost £30,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK since 1 March 2025, through various fundraising activities including in-store donations, charity walks and event ticket sales.

Dobbies is working together with Alzheimer’s Research UK to highlight the benefits of garden living for brain health and raise funds to find a cure for dementia.

World Alzheimer’s Month is an opportunity for the garden centre to help increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, by showcasing the benefits gardening can have on brain health. Through its support of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Think Brain Health campaign, Dobbies hopes to inspire customers at its Boston store to help look after their brain through gardening and garden living.

Paul Glazier, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Alzheimer’s Research UK said: “If nothing changes, one in two of us will be directly affected by dementia - either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both. At Alzheimer’s Research UK, we’re committed to finding a cure for dementia and Dobbies is helping us achieve this by raising vital funds for research.

“This beautiful bulb collection is doing just that, with money from each pack being donated to our cause. Gardening is also a great way to show our brain some love, and potentially reduce our risk of developing dementia. Being active in the garden, learning new skills, connecting with others and planting these bulbs are great ways to show our brain some love while supporting lifechanging dementia research.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Dobbies’ Boston store for standing with us and we want to say thank you to everyone who buys a pack. We hope the bulbs bring colour and joy to gardens.”

Dobbies’ Senior Plant Buyer, Claire Bishop shares her advice, to customers in Boston, for planting the bulbs in an impactful way for a colourful display. She said: “Autumn is a great time to plant spring flowering bulbs that can be found in this limited-edition collection. Temperatures have cooled down, but the soil hasn’t started to freeze, which

gives gardeners a nice window to allow the bulbs to root before winter arrives.

“Choose a location in your garden, whether it’s a bed, border or container, that has well-draining soil and plenty sunshine. Consider the size of each bulb when spacing out your display, aiming for at least 5-8 inches between each one to allow for full growth.

“Make sure the ground is ready for planting, adding compost to help improve the soil health, and dig a hole that is at least two times as deep as the bulb’s height in the areas you want to plant them. Place the bulb with the smaller point facing upwards and cover it with soil, gently pushing down to make sure the bulb is secure.

“Water bulbs as soon as they are planted, especially if the soil feels dry. If you’re working with a pot or container and are looking to make an impact with colour, you can plant a bulb lasagne for a beautiful display that keeps on giving. For beds and borders, we recommend planting bulbs in groupings for a natural look, instead of in long straight rows.”

The Sensory Garden 15 Bulbs Collection has been developed in collaboration with Taylor’s Bulbs and is now available to purchase at the Boston store and online.

LOCAL CAR RETAILER

TOASTS SUCCESS AFTER POPULAR MODEL HAILED AS “REVOLUTIONARY” AT PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

A Lincoln car retailer is celebrating success after its popular electric SUV triumphed at a recent global awards ceremony.

Stoneacre Lincoln, on Lincoln Fields was delighted that the new Volvo EX90, a premium seven-seater SUV, was crowned the winner in the Most Revolutionary Transport category at this year’s Wallpaper* Smart Space Awards.

The award came after the fully electric SUV was hailed by judges as a benchmark for Volvo’s future, showcasing innovations in safety, technology, sustainability, innovation and design.

The Wallpaper* Smart Space Awards celebrate objects, accessories, services and tools that combine beauty, design, innovation and style. The leading international design authority bestows the annual honours to give “global recognition for ideas that inspire and technology that lasts”.

The ‘Most Revolutionary Transport’ category embraces new technologies, services and products designed to help people move from A to B in more timely, innovative or convenient ways.

Available from £82,660, the Volvo EX90 features a suite of sensors both inside and outside the car to support its cutting-edge driver-assistance and safety systems. The car comes with the latest in software and connectivity technology, and can cover up to 375 miles on a single charge with no tailpipe emissions.

This isn’t the first award for the EX90, with more than five accolades under its belt. The car recently claimed World Luxury Car at the World Car Awards and Luxury Family Car of the year at the TopGear.com Awards.

Andy McInnes at Stoneacre Lincoln, said: “It is great to see another win for the Volvo EX90, especially in this category where the judges have recognised a vehicle that truly pushes boundaries in every aspect, not least in being our most luxurious car yet.

“The EX90 is our largest fully electric SUV to date and offers all of the premium quality and sustainability associated with Volvo, while defining a new era for safety.

“We welcome Lincoln drivers to visit Stoneacre Lincoln to learn more about the EX90 and its many accolades, and to chat to our friendly team of experts.”

GET YOUR CAR WINTER-READY

As autumn draws to a close and the days grow shorter, drivers across the UK begin to feel the first real bite of winter. Cold mornings, slippery roads and longer nights bring new challenges for motorists, making now the perfect time to prepare your car for the months ahead. A little foresight goes a long way in keeping journeys safe, stress-free and reliable.

CHECK YOUR TYRES

Your tyres are your only contact with the road, so their condition is vital in wet, icy or snowy weather. Make sure they’re properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth – the legal minimum is 1.6mm, though experts recommend at least 3mm during winter for improved grip. If you drive regularly on rural roads, such as those across Lincolnshire where frost and standing water are common, good tread depth makes a real difference. Winter tyres may also be worth considering if you travel long distances in poor conditions.

LIGHT THE WAY

With fewer daylight hours, good visibility is essential. Check that all your lights –headlights, brake lights, indicators and fog lamps – are working correctly. Replace dim or broken bulbs promptly, and give lenses a quick clean to remove grime that can reduce brightness. It’s also wise to carry a spare bulb kit, particularly if you’re planning late-night journeys.

Cold weather can take its toll on your engine, so make sure your car’s fluids are topped up. Antifreeze is especially important, as it prevents the coolant from freezing and damaging the engine. Check your handbook for the right type and concentration. Likewise, fill your windscreen washer reservoir with winter-grade fluid to prevent it freezing and to help clear salt and road spray.

WIPERS AND WINDSCREENS

Good visibility can be the difference between a safe journey and a dangerous one. Inspect your wiper blades for splits or signs of wear, and replace them if necessary. Keep an ice scraper and de-icer in the car, and never be tempted to pour hot water on a frozen windscreen – it could cause the glass to crack.

Even well-maintained cars can run into trouble in cold weather, so it pays to be prepared. A winter kit should include essentials such as a torch, blanket, warm clothing, gloves, a high-visibility vest, phone charger, first-aid kit, bottled water and some snacks. A shovel, jump leads and a tow rope are also sensible additions, especially if you’re travelling across exposed areas like the Lincolnshire Wolds.

STAY AHEAD OF THE WEATHER

Finally, keep an eye on forecasts and allow extra time for journeys. Slowing down, driving smoothly and maintaining safe distances are simple habits that make a big difference when roads are slippery.

Taking the time to winter-proof your car not only protects your vehicle but also gives you peace of mind. With tyres, lights, fluids, wipers and a breakdown kit sorted, you’ll be ready to face the season’s challenges head-on.
