LINCOLNSHIRE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY SUPPORTS LOCAL FOOD BANK FOR LINCOLNSHIRE DAY

Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS) donates to Lincoln Food Bank to support local families in need - marking Lincolnshire Day with a commitment to food access and community support.

LAS has proudly donated a substantial collection of food items to the Lincoln Food Bank, reinforcing its commitment to promoting access to food and supporting the local community.

Staff and Trustees from LAS came together to contribute a wide range of essential food items, including potatoes for the community grocery store, tinned goods, pasta, rice, cereals, tea and coffee, all to help families facing food insecurity across Lincolnshire. The donation was made to mark Lincolnshire Day, a celebration of the county’s heritage and values. The day reflects LAS’s core mission: to champion food, farming and the countryside, not only through education and events, but also through direct action that supports those in need.

Charlotte Powell, Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, said: “Food is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s educating young people about where their food comes from or celebrating local producers. We believe everyone deserves access to nutritious, reliable meals. Supporting the Lincoln Food Bank is a natural extension of our values.”

Chantelle Claxton, Distribution Manager at Lincoln Food Bank said:

“We are really grateful for all your donations. This is a big project and so much more than food. Along with giving out food parcels to singles, couples and families, we also run restore programmes focused on education, debt management, wellbeing and support. There’s a lot that goes on within the food bank. We support

a substantial number of people and it’s about being that frontline support when people are in a time of crisis.”

The donation comes at a time when food poverty continues to affect many households. According to the Lincoln Food Bank and Acts Trust, a food parcel can be a lifeline, but it’s not a long-term solution. LAS recognises the importance of both emergency support and systemic change and is proud to stand alongside organisations working to address these challenges.

LEARNING THROUGH CELEBRATION: LINCOLNSHIRE DAY 2025 ENGAGES WITH 1,000 STUDENTS

Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS) welcomes 1,000 KS2 pupils to celebrate and learn all about Lincolnshire Day

The LAS proudly welcomed over 1,000 Key Stage 2 students from across the county to the Lincolnshire Showground on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd October to celebrate Lincolnshire Day. The two-day event was a vibrant showcase of the county’s rich heritage, with a focus on food, farming and the countryside

As a charity committed to educating and inspiring future generations, the Society created immersive experiences for young learners to explore all things Lincolnshire. From handson activities to interactive learning zones, the event offered a unique opportunity for children to connect with the land, local produce and the people who shape the region.

Across the two-day celebration, the LAS was delighted to welcome new exhibitors, including Wilder Doddington, to the Lincolnshire Showground. Their interactive session, titled “Leave Nothing But Footprints,” invited children to explore the grounds in search of animal tracks, sparking curiosity and learning about local wildlife through hands-on discovery.

Popular exhibitors, including Ladies in Pigs, Cote Hill Cheese and Good Lookin’ Cooking helped children discover where their food comes

from, while teaching them how to prepare and cook Lincolnshire sausages, local cheeses and even pizza. Continuing the ‘Farm to Fork’ journey, L.J. Fairburn & Son guided students through the “Journey of an Egg,” and Dyson Farming showcased how strawberries are grown year-round right here in Lincolnshire.

Paula Cragg, Education Executive at the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society and event organiser, said:

“Lincolnshire Day is a brilliant opportunity for students to step outside the classroom and bring learning to life. Seeing so many young people engaged, curious and proud of their county has been incredibly rewarding. At the LAS, we’re passionate about helping children understand where their food comes from, the vital role farming plays and the importance of essential life skills that aren’t always taught in schools but are invaluable in everyday life.

A personal highlight for me has been the education around sport and fitness. Lincoln Rugby Club have been absolutely fantastic, and I’ve seen so many children inspired to take up the sport. It’s also wonderful to bring the farm to the Showground with Nunny’s Farm doing an amazing job helping children get up close to farmyard animals. For many, it’s a completely new experience!”

A highlight of the celebration was the involvement of Lincoln City Foundation, which ran two full days of interactive sessions designed to inspire teamwork, confidence and community spirit. As part of their contribution, the Foundation generously awarded 20 match tickets to the winning schools that scored the most goals, giving students the chance to experience the excitement of a Lincoln City FC game.

The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society extends its thanks to all 32 exhibitors and our volunteers who made the event a success and looks forward to continuing its mission to connect young people with the heart of Lincolnshire.

PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS

As we head into November, excitement begins to build and plans start to take shape for the festive season ahead. The run up to Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year, and a little early preparation can make all the difference when December arrives.

This year, why not embrace a slower, more thoughtful approach to Christmas by supporting local Lincolnshire businesses? From bustling craft markets to charming independent boutiques, there is a wealth of talent and creativity right on our doorstep. Handmade candles, beautifully crafted jewellery, knitted scarves and festive decorations all make heartfelt gifts that show a little extra care, and every purchase helps to support local makers and family run shops.

If you are looking to fill stockings or find something unique for that hard to buy for person, Lincolnshire’s Christmas craft fairs

are the perfect place to explore. You will find stalls brimming with seasonal treasures, from personalised home décor and artwork to natural soaps and delicious homemade preserves. Shopping locally also means discovering one of a kind pieces that you simply will not find online or on the high street.

Of course, no Christmas would be complete without a festive feast, and your local butcher can help make it one to remember. Many take orders weeks in advance for locally reared turkeys, succulent beef joints or festive hampers filled with traditional

favourites. Ordering early ensures you get the best cuts while avoiding the last minute rush.

Whether you are picking up handmade gifts or placing your festive food order, shopping local this Christmas is a wonderful way to celebrate the season. Not only will you enjoy a more personal, stress free experience, but you will also be supporting the hardworking small businesses that make Lincolnshire such a special place to call home.

So, wrap up warm, head to your local market, and let the festive spirit begin.

THE SEASON TO SHINE

As the festive season draws near, jewellery once again becomes one of the most meaningful and enduring gift choices.

November marks the start of a time when people look for presents that hold real sentiment, something lasting, beautiful and personal. From elegant necklaces and statement earrings to sophisticated watches, this is the perfect season to give a gift that will be treasured for years to come.

It is also the season of romance, with many choosing this time of year to propose. The months leading up to Christmas often see a rise in engagements as couples take the next step in their journey together. Engagement rings remain at the heart of these moments, timeless symbols of love and commitment. Whether it is a traditional solitaire diamond, a modern halo design or a

bespoke ring tailored to individual taste, today’s options offer something truly special for every couple.

Beyond proposals, jewellery continues to be one of the most versatile and personal gifts. A simple pendant, engraved bracelet or pair of elegant earrings can

express appreciation and affection in a way few other gifts can. Personalised designs, birthstone pieces and handcrafted collections are particularly popular, adding a distinctive and thoughtful touch.

Watches too have retained their enduring appeal. They combine craftsmanship with practicality, making them ideal for both men and women. Whether you prefer a minimalist design or a bold statement piece, a watch reflects style and reliability, qualities that never go out of fashion. This season, whether you are marking an engagement, celebrating a loved one or indulging in a little luxury for yourself, jewellery and watches offer a lasting expression of sentiment, a reminder that some gifts truly stand the test of time.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT REAL CHRISTMAS TREE WITH DOBBIES

Senior expert at garden centre shares top tips for selecting your tree this Christmas

Nothing makes Christmas feel quite as magical as picking your real tree. It’s the centrepiece of the festive season, the backdrop for treasured family traditions, and the place where presents gather on Christmas Eve. For many, choosing a real tree together is the moment the celebrations truly begin.

According to Dobbies’ Plant Buyer, Nigel Lawton, a little preparation goes a long way when it comes to finding the perfect fit. Nigel explains: “Buying a real tree is such a special part of Christmas, but it’s worth planning ahead. Measure the height, width and depth of your

space before you come into store, it avoids the disappointment of getting home and realising your tree is too big or too small. I always recommend bringing a tape measure with you, it makes the process stress-free.”

REAL TREES FOR EVERY HOME

At Dobbies, there’s a real tree for every size and style of space, from grand family living rooms to compact apartments, starting from just £24.99. Nigel says: “If you’ve got tall ceilings or an open-plan area to fill, the Premium Nordmann Fir is a

classic choice. The UK’s most popular Christmas tree for a reason, its lush, deep green needles and full conical shape give a traditional festive feel. The needles are softer too, so it’s ideal for homes with young children or pets.

“For narrower rooms, the Nordmann Fir Slim is a clever solution. You still get the elegance and height of a full-size tree, but it takes up much less floor space. It’s been specially grown for this shape, so it looks perfectly balanced in smaller living rooms.

“And if space is really limited, pot grown trees are brilliant. They’re compact but still make a real statement once decorated with baubles and lights. They’re perfect for balconies, porches or more compact homes, and the great thing is they can be planted outside after Christmas to enjoy for years to come.”

SCENT AND COLOUR

Nigel adds that choosing by fragrance or foliage can really enhance your Christmas atmosphere: “If scent is important to you, I’d recommend the Fraser Fir. It has a wonderful citrus-like aroma that fills your home, and its blue-green tint gives it a striking look. It’s beautifully shaped, with a narrower silhouette than a Nordmann Fir, so it won’t dominate the room but still feels generous.

“For smaller spaces, the Blue Spruce is another great choice. Its silvery-blue needles bring a cool, festive elegance, and it gives off that classic Christmas tree smell. It’s particularly good if you’re looking for something compact but distinctive. These are also available as pot grown options, making them a sustainable long-term choice.”

CARING FOR YOUR REAL TREE

Once you’ve chosen your perfect tree, care is key to keeping it looking fresh throughout December. Nigel explains: “With a freshly cut tree, keep it outside in a sheltered area until you’re ready to bring it indoors. Trim around an inch from the base of the trunk and stand it in a bucket of water, that helps it draw up moisture and reduces needle drop.

“When you move it inside, place it in a stand that holds water and make sure the reservoir is topped up daily. Real trees can drink a surprising amount, sometimes up to a litre a day, so it’s worth checking regularly.

“Position your tree away from radiators or open fires, as heat will dry it out quickly. And when decorating, spread

ornaments deeper into the branches for balance, not just on the outer tips. The Premium Nordmann Fir is excellent for holding lots of decorations thanks to its full structure.”

Dobbies also has a range of water-holding stands and tree care essentials available in-store, so customers can keep their tree looking vibrant for as long as possible.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE HEART

Every Dobbies real tree is grown in partnership with Needlefresh, who are committed to sustainable practices. Nigel says: “Our trees aren’t cut from wild forests. They’re grown on environmentally-managed farms across Scotland, with each one nurtured for up to 12 years before it makes its way into our stores. Every tree is handpruned to create the perfect festive shape, and because the work is done by hand, the impact on wildlife is kept to a minimum.

“That means when you take a Dobbies tree home, you can feel confident it’s been grown with care.”

NIGEL’S TOP TIP

Nigel’s final piece of advice: “Choosing your Christmas tree should be one of the highlights of the festive season. Take your time, measure up carefully, and think about the look and scent you want in your home. With the right preparation and care, your tree will stay fresh and beautiful right through Christmas, and it will be the heart of your celebrations.”

QUICK FIXES TO GET YOUR WINTER GARDEN LOOKING GOOD

Keeping your winter garden looking good while dealing with the challenges of the season can be a rewarding task. Here are some quick fixes to enhance your garden during the colder months:

TIDY UP: Start by clearing away any fallen leaves, dead plants, and clutter. Neat beds, organised compost heaps, and stored pots can instantly make your garden look more cared-for.

PROTECT YOUR LAWN: To prevent muddy tracks and damage from foot traffic, lay a path through high-traffic areas. If your lawn is looking worn, consider laying new turf in autumn or winter, which will help rejuvenate it and improve its appearance.

ADD WINTER COLOUR: Introduce colour with winter-flowering plants in containers and window boxes. Pansies, cyclamen, violas, and hellebores (Christmas or winter roses) are excellent choices. These plants will add vibrancy and interest even in the coldest months.

HIGHLIGHT SHRUBS: Choose shrubs that offer both greenery and colour. Cornus sanguinea, or “Midwinter Fire,” has striking red stems that brighten up the garden, while witch hazel provides beautiful yellow, orange, or pink flowers.

UPDATE GARDEN FURNITURE: If your furniture is exposed to the elements, consider investing in pieces designed for all-season use. This way, you can enjoy your

garden even on a sunny winter morning. If you must store furniture, ensure your garden or patio area is still visually appealing.

ILLUMINATE FOR WINTER

DARKNESS: With longer nights, effective lighting can make a big difference. Focus on highlighting one or two areas with soft, warm lights. Lanterns, fairy lights, and well-lit walkways can create a welcoming atmosphere. Ensure that lighting is functional and safe, especially on paths and driveways.

ENSURE SAFETY: Winter conditions can make paths and decking slippery. Keep walkways clear of snow and use sand or salt to improve traction on icy surfaces. Regularly clean algae from decking and consider applying an antislip treatment to prevent accidents.

By implementing these simple tips, you can keep your winter garden looking its best and ensure it remains a safe and enjoyable space throughout the season.

CLEARING THE WAY FOR CHRISTMAS

As November settles in, the focus naturally turns indoors. With colder days and darker evenings, it is the month when our homes become a true retreat, a place to unwind, reset and prepare for the celebrations ahead. It is also the perfect time to get organised before December’s festivities begin, creating

space and order so that when Christmas arrives, your home feels calm, ready and full of warmth. Softly scented candles in autumnal fragrances such as pumpkin spice, cinnamon or amber can instantly make rooms feel warm, welcoming and ready for cosy evenings indoors.

Start by decluttering and rethinking your layout. November is ideal for clearing surfaces, refreshing shelves and making room for the Christmas tree. Whether you prefer a real tree with its distinctive pine scent or a realistic artificial one that can be used year after year, planning where it

will go makes all the difference. Consider moving occasional furniture or rearranging seating to create a focal point for the tree, somewhere visible from multiple angles and close enough to a plug for lights. A little planning now prevents last minute reshuffling later.

This is also a great month to give your home a gentle seasonal lift without diving straight into Christmas décor. A simple update, such as swapping lighter accessories for richer tones, adding a new rug or hanging a statement mirror, can instantly make a space feel refreshed and more inviting. Introduce natural touches such as branches, pine cones, or bowls of winter fruit for a subtle nod to the coming season and to bring warmth and texture indoors.

In the kitchen, November marks the start of hearty cooking and relaxed entertaining with family and friends. Stock cupboards with essentials for impromptu gatherings, prepare your best serving dishes, and consider how your dining space will work once guests arrive. Even small updates, like a new table runner, fresh napkins, or glassware, can make the space feel festive, welcoming, and ready for the season ahead without going overboard.

Guest bedrooms too benefit from a little preparation. Clear wardrobes, add fresh bedding and ensure there is enough space for luggage. If you are hosting, this kind of thoughtful organisation early on helps make December less stressful and far more enjoyable.

As the temperature drops, many households turn to their log burners to take the edge off chilly evenings. Now is the perfect time to sweep chimneys, check stove glass and gather supplies of seasoned wood. Baskets of neatly stacked logs by the hearth not only add a practical touch but also bring a rustic, homely feel to living spaces. Even if you rely on central heating, creating a corner with a log basket or decorative firewood stack adds warmth and texture to the room, echoing the season’s cosy charm.

Outside, now is the time to give the garden or patio a quick tidy before winter sets in. Clear away fallen leaves, check outdoor lighting and perhaps add a few potted evergreens or fairy lights to frame the entrance for the festive weeks ahead. Trim back perennials, clean garden tools and cover outdoor furniture to protect it from frost. Adding bird feeders or nesting boxes will also help wildlife through the colder months and bring life to the garden even in winter.

Indoors, it’s worth giving attention to practical comfort as well as style. Check that your heating system is running efficiently, bleed radiators and consider heavier curtains to help retain warmth. Mats by the door, umbrella stands and boot trays are useful additions for wet weather days, helping to keep entrances tidy and inviting.

November is also the perfect time to begin planning your festive décor and shopping lists before the rush begins. Whether you like to change your colour scheme each year or prefer a timeless look, starting early gives you time to choose decorations that complement your home rather than overwhelm it.

This month is all about balance, tidying and preparing without yet decorating in full. By taking the time to refresh your home, tend to small maintenance tasks and clear space for the Christmas tree, you set the stage for a beautifully relaxed festive season. Whether your style is traditional or contemporary, real or realistic, the key is readiness — creating a home that feels both organised and inviting, ready to welcome the most wonderful time of the year.

AUTUMN ROAD READY

LINCOLN EXPERT URGES LOCALS TO PREPARE VEHICLES FOR THE SEASON AHEAD

Andy McInnes, from Stoneacre Lincoln on Lincoln Fields, said: “Car maintenance is important all year round, but the cold and wet months of autumn bring a unique set of hazards. We’re already seeing the effects of increased wind and rain, along with temperatures starting to drop – all of which can take a toll on vehicles and create driving conditions that require extra caution.

“Taking a moment to prepare your car is key and will ensure it remains safe and reliable throughout the season. Here are my top tips to ensure your car is ready for whatever the autumnal elements throw at it.”

1. CHECK WIPERS

“The autumn months often mean more rain, and as leaves begin to fall, they can create additional debris on your windscreen. Drivers must therefore ensure that their wiper blades are in good condition, free of cracks and capable of clearing windscreens effectively. If they’re streaking or skipping, it’s time to replace them. Consider installing blades designed for heavy-duty use, which can handle the increased moisture and debris that autumn often brings.”

2. TEST TYRES

“Your tyres are your connection to the road, so it’s essential that they are in good condition and correctly inflated. The legal minimum level of tread is 1.6mm. However, during autumn and winter it’s advisable to have tread of at least 3mm, as this will help when driving on slippery surfaces. A simple trick to test the tread depth is to use a 20p coin. When you insert the coin into one of the grooves on the tyre, the rim of the coin should sit in the tyre so that it’s no longer visible. If this isn’t the case, it’s time to replace your tyre.”

3.

GET THE JUICES FLOWING

“Check that your coolant is at the appropriate level and mixed correctly to prevent freezing as temperatures drop. Refill your windscreen washer fluid with a winter-grade solution that won’t freeze and will effectively remove autumn buildup. If your car is due an oil change, then check and replace the oil and oil filter to keep the engine running smoothly. You should also consider replacing the cabin air filter, which can become clogged with pollen, dust and other debris from the summer months.”

4. TEST YOUR BRAKES

“With wetter roads and the potential for fallen leaves making surfaces slippery, having fully functioning brakes is vital. Listen for any squeaking or grinding sounds when braking, and if you notice any issues – such as decreased responsiveness or a spongy brake pedal – visit a professional to have them inspected. Ensuring your brakes are in top condition will give you peace of mind as you navigate autumn’s more challenging driving conditions.”

5.

GET A FREE VEHICLE REPAIR

“Colder temperatures increase the likelihood of windscreen chips turning into dangerous cracks. At Stoneacre Lincoln, we offer a free windscreen and tyre damage repair service for any Volvo driver –regardless of the car’s age. To take advantage of the service, you can simply book an appointment with a qualified Volvo technician, who will check the damage. In many instances, the problem can be repaired on the spot – providing a fast and convenient service that is free of charge.”
