CEO MESSAGE

H

appy New Year of the Dog! The dog symbolises loyalty and honesty, one of the key values we hold dear at Wallem. We are thankful to have caring and committed staff both at sea and onshore, many of whom have dedicated years of loyal service to the Group.

As we move into 2018, we do so hoping for a more stable and less turbulent year for the shipping industry as a whole. However predictions are that 2018 will be as challenging for vessel owners as 2017; especially with the new regulations being implemented in the coming years ahead. The theme of this issue is sustainable growth, an apt one as we look ahead to a new year and the further opportunities, investments and milestones that it will bring. 2017 was a profitable year for the Group and we hope to achieve continued sustainable growth, with a focus on customer service and safety in the year ahead. Our Agency business is growing steadily and our agency teams have justly earned a first-class reputation not only for their expertise and professionalism but for above and beyond quality services ensuring hassle-free port calls and extremely satisfied customers. Turn to pages 3-5 to read more about how our teams throughout Asia deal with every challenge that comes their way. Wallem continues to provide quality Ship Management solutions, managing a range of different vessel types for customers worldwide. Safety remains our greatest priority at Wallem and we are proud to have received awards for safety during 2017. We want our seafarers to do themselves and us proud by taking safety in their own hands and watching out for each other onboard. Turn to page 14 to hear about a recent commendation that Wallem vessels received from DNV GL and read more on the important issue of ‘Chronic Unease’on the following page. Our SeaSafe Marine business is also growing solidly and has gained new clients in 2017. The company offers third party solutions for lifeboat and repair and maintenance for a range of vessel types and has won lifeboat and davit service contracts from several major cruise companies over the past 6 months. In this issue we celebrate the opening of our new office in Clark in the Philippines. This new office represents an investment in the future and in our young and talented Filipino workforce there. On pages 23-24, read more about how this new office was designed as a professional and motivating workplace for our millennial workforce to enable maximum productivity and efficiency. Speaking of millennials, in the feature on pages 19-20, we chat with Adrian Lam, one of the participants of our Wallem Graduate programme. We hear all about why he is excited about a future career in shipping, what he enjoys about working at Wallem and how he is ready for all the challenges that come his way. In order to meet with the future demands of this new workforce, we are looking at different ways to engage and inspire. The safety team has held successful webinars and is looking at other ways to use the available technology to engage and inspire teams onboard. Wallem Academy, our in-house training portal is now available as an app to enable our staff to learn on the go. Read more on page 12. Wallem Ship Agency Leading the pack in Asia

W

allem Ship Agency provides a first class agency service for vessels calling at all Asian ports. Wallem is one of the longest established agents in the region, with an agency network spanning 26 offices. Our agency teams are experts in handling a wide range of vessels – from VLCCs, heavylift, tankers, cruise, naval vessels, dry bulk and multipurpose vessels to container ships. Whether it is for Asia-wide appointments or ad hoc agency support, each call presents its own unique challenge. Our proactive approach to getting things done is why customers choose Wallem as their ‘go to’ ship agents. Below are some of the calls handled recently by our agency teams in China, Japan, Myanmar and Hong Kong.

Wallem Ship Agency – CHINA

Set up in 2004, Wallem was the first fully licensed foreign agency provider in China. Today our team is spread across eight owned offices, providing a range of agency services to customers and specialising in providing dry dock agency and support services.

L

ast July, Wallem was appointed to handle vessel calls to China for G2 Ocean; a joint venture of two of the world's leading breakbulk and bulk shipping companies: Gearbulk and Grieg Star, with a combined fleet of 130 vessels. The total number of China calls per year is expected to reach 700. Following the great work done by our teams in China, Wallem has been appointed to provide ship agency services to all of G2 Ocean’s vessels throughout South East Asia – namely Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar. Having worked with G2 Ocean for half a year, the Wallem teams are familiar with their expectations and requirements for handling their fleet of open hatch vessels and bulk carriers and have done extensive preparation work to handle these SE Asian calls. 3,311 packages of South American fruit aboard the M/V Green Costa Rica (a reefer vessel arriving at Shanghai Nangang terminal) required smooth unloading, discharging and distribution. The China agency team were appointed agents for this call and began preparing a comprehensive pre-unloading plan. Jack Hu and Sammy Xie travelled

200km to Nangang for a special preparation meeting. The receiver, Goodfarmer Food (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. requested help clearing the vessel through customs upon arrival, to ensure quick collection and distribution of the fruit. The agency team arrived in the early morning and completed all the formalities before the arrival of the vessel. Another agency team member met the vessel at the gangway and coordinated ship, terminal and receiver cargo discharge and distribution. Everything was completed on schedule. The team’s dedicated approach and efficient service meant both the ship owner and the charterer were very satisfied with Wallem’s service and are keen to cooperate again in the future.


LEAD STORY Wallem Ship Agency – JAPAN

Wallem Ship Agency in Japan was set up in 1997. Our Japan Agency team has vast experience handling a range of different vessels. Today they operate from three offices - Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka and handle calls in all major Japanese ports. The team handle dry bulk, RoRo and cruise calls on a regular basis and provide support on various ad hoc vessel calls.

Wallem Ship Agency – MYANMAR

Wallem Ship Agency has operated in Myanmar since 1995. Wallem is Local Representative for ship owners and operators as the Myanmar government Shipping Agency Department (SAD) is sole state agent. The Wallem team coordinates port services in all ports in close liaison with SAD and the Myanmar Port Authority and specialise in Project Cargo, Heavy Lift & Breakbulk and Cruise.

T

he call of the German Deep Sea Ocean research vessel, the RV Sonne presented an interesting challenge. This appointment involved multiple port calls in Japan over four months as the vessel was conducting deep sea research at the Kuril Kamchatka trench. Our Japan port agency team, led by Operations Manager, Grace Kakimoto, worked with all relevant parties to ensure everything went smoothly for each call. This included arrangements for the delivery of specialised science equipment and provisions, vessel maintenance, crew changes and the disembarkation and embarkation of international scientists for the multiple calls to Hokkaido and Yokohama. The team catered to the RV Sonne’s every need and our customer was more than satisfied with the outstanding support provided. As general agent for Intermarine, Wallem provided operational support to the heavy load carrier, M.V. Ocean Jazz when it called in Yokohama. The vessel was berthed at Yokohama North Dock (US Military Base) for around 30 days. The vessel’s Master, Captain C. Hill, expressed gratitude to our Japanese operations team who gave a warm welcome and provided invaluable port agency support during the vessel’s stay in Yokohama. This included crew changes, repairs, and the arrangement and delivery of multiple ship spares and provisions. He wrote, “I want to take a minute to say thank you. Your help went above and beyond your call of duty. The ship could not have asked for more or better operational support and your many kindnesses throughout our port stay made leaving Yokohama a sad occasion for the Captain and crew.”

A

s Asia’s premier cruise agent, the Wallem team were excited when appointed by Star Cruises (and sister company, Dream Cruises) to handle calls to the new destination, Macleod Island. This private tropical island is located 40 nautical miles west of Kawthaung in the Myeik Archipelago. The Myanmar agency team knew they had a challenge on their hands to prepare for the largest cruise ship to call here to date. Managing Director of Wallem Ship Agency Myanmar, Charlie Bussayabuntoon and his team began preparing immediately for the first call. The team made several trips to the island ahead of time to ensure that everything was ready for this milestone call.

On 3rd November 2017, Star Cruises’ MS SuperStar Libra made her inaugural call to Macleod Island. Operations Manager Robin Sein and Operations Assistant Khin Khin Oo accompanied Charlie Bussayabuntoon onboard to welcome Captain Christian Aalbers and present him with a memento. The call was a great success marked by passengers who were happy with all the arrangements. The MS SuperStar Libra will call at Macleod Island on a biweekly basis through to March 2018 and the Wallem team will ensure that each call is as smooth as the last.

LEAD STORY Wallem Ship Agency – HONG KONG

Established in 1925, our Hong Kong agency team handles all vessel types, calling at all cargo wharves and terminals in the territory. The team has solid experience in handling mid-stream operations and specialises in finding solutions for project cargo shipments, lay-up and ship repair.

W

hen the heavy-lift offshore vessel, the M.V. Osprey called in Hong Kong, as agent (appointed by the carrier and the shipper), the Wallem team had a big challenge on their hands. They had to find a suitable berth and handle all the logistics involved in getting the cargo (a huge crane) onto the vessel. An entire week was spent preparing for the call, working closely with external stakeholders including the Hong Kong Marine Department (MARDEP) and getting all necessary permits. The vessel would need to enter Hong Kong waters via the Tonggu channel as it could not pass under the Tsing Ma bridge (usual route) due to the height restriction. When an unexpected last minute requirement for a height exemption came from the Civil Aviation Department (CAD), the team sprang into action to come up with a solid plan B despite limited options (draft limitations combined with swell and sea conditions in Hong Kong harbour). Plan B was not needed in the end as luckily, after much communication back and forth, an exemption from the CAD came through the following day. The team then had just a few hours of daylight left to tow the barge (which had been towed back to open sea awaiting instructions) alongside the ship and load it on. Thanks to smooth communication and coordination with all the various stakeholders involved, the mission was accomplished without additional cost and delay to our customer, Norwegian company Offshore Heavy Transport (OHT).

Both carrier and shipper were pleased with the team’s service and quick-thinking approach to ensuring a successful call. The OHT load master expressed his thanks for Wallem’s help and stated that he looked forward to further co-operation with us in coming years. In addition to providing full Ship Agency services, thanks to Wallem’s global Group network, the agency teams can also help customers with spare parts delivery, dry dock support services, procurement of spares and stores and lifeboat maintenance and repair services.

Two More Vessels Enter Commercial Fleet

W

allem commercially manages a fleet of vessels ranging from tankers to bulk carriers and container vessels. Based in Singapore, the Wallem Commercial Services team also provide advisory and investment services, chartering and commercial operations and can offer various project management solutions to maximize client returns. At the end of 2017, the team welcomed two more Supramax vessels into their commercially-managed fleet. Wallem Commerical Services (WCS) was appointed at the beginning of the year by another international bank to provide Asset Protection Services. WCS carried out valuation of the asset and assisted in formulating strategy for the asset’s future deployment.

Takeover of the Front Polaris

W

allem Ship Management was pleased to take over the management of another Frontline Aframax oil tanker, the Front Polaris. The vessel departed the shipyard early in the New Year after eight days of rigorous preparations and was taken into Wallem management directly from the newbuilding shipyard. The Wallem technical and marine teams paid frequent visits onboard the ship while it was in the yard before moving onboard and worked alongside the onboard team to ensure a smooth takeover process. Thanks to all involved for excellent teamwork, cooperation and support!

Wallem Ship Agency Appointed by G2 Ocean for SE Asia Calls

W

allem Ship Agency has been appointed by G2 Ocean to provide Ship Agency services to all their vessels calling in ports in SE Asia, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Myanmar. G2 Ocean is a newly formed joint venture of two of the world’s leading breakbulk & bulk shipping companies: Gearbulk and Grieg Star. Wallem was appointed by G2 Ocean back in July this year for calls to China, totaling an estimated number of 700 calls per year. This further appointment for SE Asia is testament to Wallem Ship Agency’s Asian expertise and professionalism in offering quality reliable agency services.

Gener8 Success Gets Message of Appreciation from LOOP

W

allem is proud to have received a message of appreciation from Louisiana Offshore Oil port (LOOP) following the call of the M.T. Gener8 Success there for cargo discharge. The discharge operation was one of a kind whereby two different grades of cargoes with different API and Viscosity were discharged simultaneously to achieve a 50:50 mix ratio at the manifold. Despite concerns from the terminal about this operation, thanks to reassurance and good communication, the discharge was a success. Well done to Captain Gaurav Sood and crew! Issue 1 2018

Managing Director of Wallem Ship Agency Dickson Chin joined other guests (from Hong Kong Tourism Board, Ocean Terminal and tug and pilot associations) onboard the vessel in Hong Kong for a small plaque and key ceremony.

he Wallem Agency Japan team welcomed the cruise ship the MSC Lirica to Kochi on her maiden call on 26th October 2017. Kochi is the capital city of Kochi Prefecture located on the island of Shikoku in Japan. The maiden call was marked with a special ceremony and vessel tour for local media and government officials. The Wallem team was delighted to provide port agency services for the call and 1,700 happy passengers enjoyed a lovely sunny day in Kochi.

After completing repairs at Singapore, the vessel began its ‘President Cruise’ which saw it make calls to Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines before heading into HK with President of Windstar Cruises, Mr John Delaney, VIPs and dignitaries sailing onboard. Wallem Ship Agency handled the vessel’s calls to each of the ports on this special cruise and ensured that each call went smoothly and as planned.

t the beginning of the new year, the Windstar Cruise Yacht, the “Star Legend” arrived in Singapore on her inaugural call. The yacht berthed at the Singapore Cruise Centre Terminal to disembark all the Passengers and loaded some materials before going to drydock for repairs at Sembawang Shipyard. The Wallem Ship Agency Singapore team handled the whole port movement of the vessel to and from the shipyard; as well as the disembarkation of passengers on arrival and embarkation of passengers before departure.

Busy start to the year for MBS

I

t has been a busy start to the New Year for Marine Buying Services (MBS) which provides competitive third party procurement solutions. So far in January, MBS has made quotations for as little as US$50 and for as much as US$3.5m! MBS has supplied everything from lube oil to an oil major, to large steel pipes to a shipbuilder to foodstuffs and bulk caustic soda to a cruise ship.

Business Wins for SeaSafe Marine

At the end of December, Marine Director Fared Khan paid a visit onboard the Sonangol Cabinda along with Technical Superintendent for Sonangol, Oscar Muteba while the vessel was in the shipyard in China. This visit was a special one as it was also an opportunity for a small reunion as Fared met up with Captain Kunal Thareji whom he had sailed with 20 years previously. A safety meeting was held onboard during Captain Khan’s visit to reinforce the importance of everyone both on shore and at sea being committed to the goal of safety and operational excellence. This visit was followed by one from Group Technical Director Ioannis Stefanou and team.

S

eaSafe Marine continues to grow, gaining business from both existing and new customers. An owner of a fleet of dry bulk cargo vessels entered into a fleet wide lifeboat service contract (FSA) with SeaSafe Marine for all 60 of their vessels. The agreement will run for five years and we will be the sole service supplier for all planned and un-planned lifeboat system services, inspections and repairs, worldwide, during this period. In 2017, SeaSafe added 127 third-party vessels under fixed long term sole supplier service agreements as well as adding 2 new cruise customers both requiring major docking services. Issue 1 2018

Group Technical Director for Wallem Ship Management, Ioannis Stefanou gave a presentation on new regulations and their impact and Head of Commercial Operations for Wallem Commercial Services, Kaushik Neogy presented on Asset protection and Wallem’s role in it. Wallem also arranged for tours of the Singapore MPA VTIS control room and harbour respectively, enabling the ING team to get an up-close view of the various types of shipping assets firsthand. This was a great opportunity to interact with ING’s transportation team who enjoyed the tours immensely.

anaging Director of Ship Management, David Price took part in the Safety4Sea conference held in October 2017 in Athens, Greece. David gave a presentation about why engagement is the key to safety & operational excellence at Wallem and highlighted the successes of Wallem’s Engagement Programme. The conference was held the day after the Safety4Sea awards ceremony and dinner during which Wallem was awarded with the 2017 Safety4Sea Tanker Operator Award.

ong Kong Maritime Week was held in midNovember 2017 with more than 50 events held in the city. These ranged from seminars and forums to conferences and networking cocktails and Wallem was well represented throughout the week. Our CEO Simon Doughty, MD of Ship Management, David Price, Director of Sales & Marketing Nigel Moore and others attended the various events and forums during the week, including the Hong Kong Ship Owners’ Association (HKSOA) cocktail to kick-off their 60th anniversary celebrations. irector of Sales & Marketing Nigel Moore joined Business Development Manager Karen He at the Tradewinds Shipping China event in Shanghai on 24th October. The event, the theme of which was “Riding on New Waves of Opportunity” was a good opportunity for the team to meet with existing and potential Chinese customers and to hear about developments in ship finance, disruptive innovations in the Maritime Industry and the prospects of shipbuilding in China.

On 23rd October, a panel discussion was held during the Multiport AGM conference in Singapore. Among the panelists was our CEO Simon Doughty representing Wallem Ship Agency and General Manager of Marine HR, Praveen Shukla representing Wallem Ship Management. The discussion focused around the challenges faces by agents in a commoditised market where barrier to entry is low. We were asked about expectations from ship agents’ perspective, challenges, and for our views on certain key issues.

anaging Director for Wallem Singapore Nitin Mathur was pleased to attend and speak at the TXF (Trade & Export Finance) Asia held in Hong Kong on 10th October. Nitin took part in the session on Shipping Challenges and Opportunities, along with representatives from Deutsche Bank, Watson Farley & Williams and Société Générale. They looked at the experiences and lessons to be learnt from restructurings and defaults in shipping, requirements, implications and what lenders can do to mitigate future risks. Issue 1 2018

ur Marine Director Captain Fared Khan attended Crew Connect Global held from 6th-8th November in Manila. Fared took part in a panel entitled ‘Making the Connection: How do we enable shipping’s digital future?’ The event is the world’s largest for the Marine HR community. Sessions covered various topics including Skills & Training for the 21st Century, Cyber Compliance & Security, Digitalization and Ship-to-Shore Interaction.

he Wallem team attended Seatrade Cruise Asia 2017 in Shanghai. The event is Asia’s premier cruise conference and was a good opportunity for us to showcase our services and expertise and to meet with existing and potential clients. Managing Director of Wallem Ship Agency Dickson Chin led a joint team consisting of Wallem China, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Korea at the event. Wallem also had a booth in the conference hall which attracted much attention and business inquiries.

e were delighted to invite several of our customers to join us at the Sailor’s Home & Missions to Seamen Annual Charity dinner on 16th November to raise money to help seafarers in need. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Kowloon Bay. The Missions to Seafarers is aimed at providing help and support - practical, emotional and spiritual - to seafarers around the world. This is done through ship visits, drop-in seafarers’ centres and a range of welfare and emergency support services.

Wallem Ship Management Holds Safety Webinars

T

he Ship Management safety team recently launched their first interactive webinar, taking full advantage of the latest technology available.

Webinars are a great way to supplement traditional training and particularly effective and convenient for refresher training courses. Since they are interactive, participants can check their understanding on a subject in real time. Webinars also have the bonus of being recordable so participants are able to access the materials after the live event, allowing them to revisit them for reference. The subject of this first webinar was the Safety Stand down, with the audience being officers and engineers rejoining the fleet. A poll was carried out after the session as to its effectiveness and comments and feedback from the attendees were very positive. The safety team look forward to continuing using this technology in the year ahead to communicate with our

officers and engineers and share expertise and knowledge on a variety of key topics in an interactive and engaging way. Lloyd’s List Ship Manager of the Year Award

the distress messages over the radio, the Master of the Troviken immediately alerted and assembled his crew on deck and began lookout, while coordinating with the local coast guard and agents. One of the four crew members had drifted away from the anchored ship and was spotted near the port bow of the Troviken. Seeing as it was too dangerous to lower the rescue boat due to the weather, the crew threw a lifebuoy and line to the man overboard and reeled him in onboard via the ship’s port side gangway. The crew member was successfully rescued and given care and first aid onboard the Troviken. The three other crew members were spotted in the sea, holding onto a lifebuoy and successfully pulled onboard the coastguard boat. Christian Erstad, Operational Director for the vessel’s owner, Viken Shipping AS sent a message of thanks to Captain Ravi Rai and the crew of the Troviken for their role in the rescue operation.

Wallem Crew Assist Venezuelan coast guard in Rescue

n 24th December, the crew of the Wallem-managed vessel the Troviken took part in a rescue along with the Venezuelan coast guard. An anchored ship ahead and about a mile away from the vessel was receiving provisions from a small boat which suddenly capsized. Its four crew members went overboard. Due to the rough weather the vessel could not lower her rescue boats and so requested assistance from the coast guard. Upon hearing

Our team (both onboard & ashore) achieved a milestone by getting the topmost grading “A” on SIA Inspections for all six K-Line charter vessels in the year 2017. This achievement could not have been done without the continuous effort & commitment by all team members involved, both onboard and ashore. Well done all!

M.T. Solviken Honoured by DNV GL for Zero Observations

T

he M.T. Solviken, a crude oil tanker, was delivered from the shipyard in 2007. Since delivery, the Solviken has had 15 PSC inspections without a single Port State Control (PSC) observation recorded. The vessel is managed by Wallem Europe. On completion of the latest PSC inspection which took place in Primorsk in Russia, the PSC Inspector made a point of highlighting this achievement to the vessel. Archie Smiley, General Manager, Fleet Management for Wallem Europe says,

On November 14th, DNVGL‘s Senior Vice President, Regional Manager North Europe Region Jon Rysst presented a diploma to the ship owner Viken Shipping’s Technical Director Vidar Winciansen at a small ceremony at Viken’s office in Bergen. The diploma was then presented to the Captain and crew onboard the ship and the owner’s gratitude on this achievement was expressed.

Chronic Unease as a key means to achieve our Safety Vision

C

hronic Unease is the experience of unease and discomfort regarding the management of risks. It’s that feeling in the pit of your stomach when something doesn’t feel right and sends off alarm bells. In the workplace, anyone in a managerial or supervisory role needs to be particularly aware of the risks to themselves and others in a complex work environment such as onboard a ship. Chronic Unease can be channeled into positive action to improve safety onboard; our main focus at Wallem. Why is it so important to demonstrate Chronic Unease?

At Wallem, we are focused on creating greater awareness on the issue of Chronic Unease in line with our safety goal of Zero injuries, Zero spills and Zero accidents. Shell's video on Chronic Unease, which has been distributed to all our offices and ships, highlights that just because an incident hasn’t yet happened doesn’t meant that it won’t. And in fact that every incident-free day that passes might increase the chance of one happening. Why? Complacency. We stop feeling uneasy. We stop looking for weak danger signals. We stop thinking, ‘What else can we do to ensure safety?’ This is something that we all do; it is part of human nature to think that ‘It won’t happen here to me, now.’ But it so easily can, and that’s why it’s so important to demonstrate your chronic unease.

What does healthy chronic unease mean?

A healthy level of chronic unease ensures that weak danger signals are not missed. An example is a vessel approaching a port with a three-mile-long entrance channel. Tugs are required for proceeding into the channel. The pilot on board informs the Master that the tug would be joining the vessel before entering the channel at the entrance buoy. When the vessel is around three miles from the entrance buoy, the Master notices that the tug is not coming down the channel. Chronic unease would make the Master engage with the pilot to check on the status of the tug. It is possible that the tug is delayed by a few minutes. However, it is also possible that the tug is not able to depart from the docking berth due to engine failure or is delayed considerably in a previous operation. Healthy Chronic Unease would ensure that the Master engages with the pilot and the operation is delayed or aborted.

How can chronic unease be measured?

The condition of chronic unease can be measured using the following image. A seafarer or senior officer on board can measure the extent of his or her chronic unease for each of the conditions pictured. Lack of chronic unease can lead to complacency. Each senior officer or leader must ensure that they have healthy amount of chronic unease to remain alert TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

and manage risks effectively. This will help increase safety and contribute towards operational excellence.

What is a healthy amount of unease? A healthy level means remaining alert and managing risks effectively, showing that safety is a priority and approaching it as a positive outcome. • Too little might lead to complacency, so that warning signals are ignored, ambiguities are marginalized, and negative indicators and adverse consequences rarely considered. • Too much might cause anxiety, affect decision making, action and even mental health in the long run. Wallem Fleet Officers Meetings - Ukraine & India

W

allem Fleet Officers Meetings are held at several times a year. The meetings are held at our Wallem training centres where the majority of our seafarers are from; namely China, the Philippines, India and the Ukraine. The aim of the meetings is to ensure that all seafarers are aligned on expectations and safety best practices, to close the gap and enhance communication between ship and shore and to increase seafarer engagement. Special customer conferences are also held since training at Wallem in-house training centres is customer/owner specific. At the end of 2017, special WFOMs were held in Odessa in the Ukraine and in Kolkata and Chennai in India respectively. Wallem Fleet Officers’ Meeting – Odessa Another Fleet Officers' Meeting was held in Odessa in Ukraine. It was a good opportunity for our Ukranian seafarers to meet with the senior Ship Management team and for ship and shore teams to align on operational issues and to reinforce the importance of safety onboard and

wellness at sea. Following the conference, a family dinner was held which was attended by Wallem representatives, our seafarers and their family members. Well done to Representative for Marine HR, Nataliia Shevchuk and her team for arranging a great meeting.

EVENT Wallem Fleet Officers’ Meeting – Kolkata & Chennai Wallem Fleet Officers’ Meetings were held in in Kolkata and Chennai respectively. Senior management from both Hong Kong and India attended both meetings which were interactive in nature, with focus on safety, operational excellence and wellness. Our Business Process Manager, Nathalie Quiquempoix also attended both meetings, talking to our seafarers about our Marine HR Management System,

Compas which is being rolled out onboard our vessels and about 5S and how it can help to improve efficiency, quality and safety. The meetings were also the perfect opportunity to discuss current various operational, technical, commercial & navigational issues. The highlights of both WFOMs were family get-togethers on the final evenings for the participants and their families which were also attended by management.

Wallem Graduate Programme

The making of a Superintendent

T

he Wallem Graduate Programme is aimed at selecting the best and brightest mechanical engineering and naval architecture graduates and providing them with the training, mentoring and environment they need to be promoted to the role of Superintendent. With our wide range of maritime services, Wallem can provide graduates with a Adrian Lam unique and broad overview of the shipping industry, which will be beneficial for graduates’ own career development and in enabling them to best serve Wallem’s clients. The programme is structured to provide each graduate with a personalised development plan with both long and short term achievements and learning. This incorporates blended learning, competence development, experiential learning and on-the-job training and includes a period of time onboard a vessel to gain critical practical knowledge. The purpose of the programme is to complement our onshore teams, with their wealth of practical experience from many years spent at sea, with highly educated university graduates who bring a varying skillset, fresh outlook and ability and willingness to learn from the bottom up. In addition, we hope that this programme will help to promote the maritime industry to the younger generation by offering a challenging but rewarding career path in an exciting industry they may have overlooked.

Meet Adrian Lam, a graduate engineer currently in his second year of our graduate programme. Adrian tells us about his love for ships, why he is excited about a career in the maritime industry and why he is taking every opportunity to challenge himself during his time at Wallem: Where are you from and what did you study at university?

I grew up in Hong Kong and stayed here for university where I studied mechanical engineering.

What did you dream of being when you were younger?

I have always been interested in machines – ships, aircraft, rockets, etc. so always dreamed of having a job related to one of these interests. I did my final year project at university on aircraft design.

Why did you choose a career in shipping?

I think it chose me by chance. In my third year at university TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

I was really lucky to get the opportunity to do an internship at Lloyd’s Register. It was a three month internship and my first real contact with the maritime industry. In fact no-one in my mechanical engineering class really knew very much about the shipping industry.

What does the programme entail and how long have you been working at Wallem?

I came across the Wallem Graduate Programme during a career fair at my university and decided to apply. I was lucky enough to be offered a place in the programme after a rigorous interview process. I took up the place in 2016 after graduation. The idea behind the programme is to train me up over a period of four years to eventually become a Ship Superintendent. The programme began with a two month internship, after which there was a review with Wallem’s Technical Director. This was a serious and frank conversation whereby he asked me if I was really serious about working in this industry. He explained that the job of a Superintendent was a rewarding but tough one as it was a 24/7, 365 days a year job. However, I knew that after two months of working at Wallem’s Hong Kong office, learning as much as I could about the industry, I had already made my decision. I reported back that I was up for the challenge and I understood what it entailed. I have now been with Wallem for more than a year and a half. I like to constantly challenge myself and am always keen to learn more. I am quite adventurous by nature and I am definitely having a good adventure here at Wallem.

What does your role involve?

I am responsible for supporting several assigned vessels and assisting the Superintendents’ daily management of them. This includes checking the mailboxes, filing reports, etc. I also help with vessel report monitoring and vessel performance analysis and have worked on special projects such as Ballast water treatment and MRV. My computational skills come in handy for my daily work; allowing me to make processes as efficient as possible.

Who are you working with?

In my first few months, I worked very closely with one of our Fleet Managers, Amitabh Gupta, work shadowing him and following the fleet-wide issues he deals with. Since then I have also been working closely with several Superintendents including Carl Horvat and Samar Das who both always take time to try and teach me by asking questions and sharing their experience. I am trying to learn as much as I can from my superiors – to familiarize myself with the main issues that they face. In particular I am taking the opportunity to learn more about regulations such as SOLAS and MARPOL and I am also trouble shooting machinery problems with the Superintendents. Recently my role has evolved to helping several superintendents with

the takeover of four new vessels – communicating with the shipyards, preparing certificates, pre-delivery supplies, sending manuals to Class for approval, etc.

meantime I am greatly benefitting from attending vessels in drydock and accompanying my superiors on vessel inspections. I also enjoy taking part in industry seminars and training courses to continuously update my knowledge.

What appeals to you about working in the shipping industry?

I love the scope of work and the challenging nature of the job. You need to have a broad skillset and scope of knowledge and you are always learning as the job is always evolving. You also need to be quick to react as so much is at stake. Shipping drives the world economy so working in this industry you are exposed to global culture. In our office alone we have colleagues from Sweden, Denmark, the UK, Greece, Belgium, Singapore, Ireland, Malaysia, India, the Philippines – and of course Hong Kong and China. I enjoy working with men and women from different cultures and getting to know more about the world.

What do you enjoy most about working at Wallem?

I love the atmosphere at Wallem – it is very professional yet friendly. I believe having a good work atmosphere helps you to really enjoy work and I certainly do. This atmosphere also makes it easier to learn from and get help from others, including your manager, as you feel that you can reach out to them and ask questions. This environment is a good fit for me as I am inquisitive and very sociable. Our Hong Kong office is also a very nice environment to work in, with different work spaces which means you don’t have to be stuck at your desk all day long and can move to another workspace to get inspiration from time to time. I am trusted to work independently but I am also included in everything. My superiors see everything as a potential learning opportunity for me, from doing ship visits and going on-site at the shipyard to observing emergency drills. There is so much to learn and I feel lucky to have this amazing learning opportunity.

What is your greatest challenge at work?

My biggest challenge is trying to learn from video and from makers’ manuals about practical jobs and common problems such as overhauling engines or machines. I am looking forward to my time at sea to gain more practical experience and understand more about the burden faced by the crew and the jobs and time required for these jobs. In the

What are your future ambitions?

In five years I hope to become a Superintendent. In ten years I hope to have a management role and to continue learning. Having met several Senior Superintendents at various industry seminars, what strikes me is that this is a role in which you are always learning and that really appeals to me. And in 25 years, who knows. I am looking forward to some job opportunities abroad with Wallem so that I can expand my horizons.

What do Adrian’s mentors have to say? Samar Das says:

“Adrian has a positive attitude and the willingness to learn. He can grasp new things and put them into practice. His work is meticulous and he gets along well with everyone on the team. Adrian is a good reminder never to underestimate anyone and to smile even when under pressure.”

Carl Horvath says:

“Adrian is hard working and dependable. He is not afraid to take on a new challenge and always delivers. Adrian is a valued part of the team and being from a younger generation can see things from different perspectives. Adrian has shown us how teamwork and cooperation can come naturally if you have the right attitude.”

Ensuring Safety at Sea

Repair & Overhaul of Lifeboats and Rescue boats by SeaSafe Marine

S

ince being set up to provide third party marine safety equipment solutions, SeaSafe Marine continues to grow, gaining business from both existing and new customers, from owners and managers of a variety of vessels from tankers, dry bulk carriers and VLGCs to cruise ships. This is a segment which has been seeing particular growth with SeaSafe having won lifeboat and davit service contracts from several major cruise companies over the past 6 months. With a wealth of experience and expertise, SeaSafe engineers have an indepth understanding of industry needs and expectations - both from the ship owner and service provider perspectives. The team can provide a range of services including pre-docking surveys, conditional audits, overhaul and repair of lifeboats, rescue boats and davits, annual & 5-Year servicing and even crew training. SeaSafe engineers can be mobilised quickly and efficiently to meet clients’ needs as they are centrallymanaged at strategic locations around the world. In October 2017, our Business Development Manager for Europe Tomas Langgård paid a visit to Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven to meet up with the SeaSafe Marine team who were looking after the repair and overhaul of the lifeboats and equipment of the cruise ship, “Crystal Symphony” which is part of the Star Cruises Group. Tomas was keen to get a firsthand look at what the work involved. This is his diary entry:

Tomas Langgård, Bremerhaven, Germany October 2017 SeaSafe Marine was awarded the contract to repair and overhaul the five Tender boats, three Lifeboats and two Rescue boats, (including all 10 Davit winches gearbox overhaul), on the cruise ship the “Crystal Symphony” during her 5 yearly dry docking in Bremerhaven, Germany. This particular job kept a team of five SeaSafe Marine engineers; along with some local assistants, busy for the whole docking period (from 25th of September to the 14th of October). As part of my continued training with Wallem, I visited SeaSafe Marine Technical Manager Mr. Vasanth K.S. and his team at the Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven to get a better understanding of what such a repair job entails, the most important issues that need to be focused on and the main challenges. TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

It was very interesting to experience the hustle and bustle both onboard the ship and alongside it with all the hotel and marine crew together with a huge number amount of external contractors involved with the dry docking. Vasanth explained that each day started with an 8.30am meeting during which all the contractors shared their program for the day with the customer Crystal Cruises. It ended with a 5pm meeting during which they shared the progress. However, due to reduced time in the dry dock, they had to work long days towards the end of the project to finish up in time with certain days finishing early the following morning. One particular time-consuming task was to renew the fenders on all the tender boats which required a total of 750 new mounting fastenings to be drilled and tapped as original fastenings could no longer be used. Most of the servicing was done on the pier where the lifeboats were placed during the docking. The majority of work needs to be done in this way because safe access on a hard standing is needed. Once the lifeboat hangs onboard the vessel, not much more work can be done. The major challenge for this particular job was the weather, with very rainy conditions throughout the dry docking. Most of the service jobs take place outdoors. Despite having arranged for a tarpaulin to be erected as a dry shed, the weather still presented quite a challenge – the rain even caused some of the technical equipment to short circuit and need replacing. Another challenge with so many workers and contractors involved in various other activities on the vessel is the limited space and time available. This is especially true during various operations which impede the lifeboat and davit work such as blasting of the hull and deck areas close to where the service jobs where carried out. In spite of the challenges the team was able to carry out the necessary jobs as per the contract to a high level of satisfaction. They were finalising the work when I came by to visit. Upon completion of the service jobs, all the boats would then go into the water for additional testing before being lifted back up onboard the cruise ship. The ship resumed operations, departing Bremerhaven the following day heading for Lisbon where new passengers would embark. In January 2018, SeaSafe Marine was appointed to look after lifeboat repair and maintenance for another of the Star Cruises’ vessels, Star Pisces while she docked in Hong Kong. The SeaSafe team look forward to strengthening their relationship with this valued customer.

Wallem Unveils New Philippines Office

T

he Wallem Clark office was set up in the year 2000 primarily to focus on software development matters. Since then Clark’s role has adapted so that today the office deals with IT support to the Group together with various Vessel IT functions and the provision of a range of internal back office and shared service solutions. In November Wallem Group CEO Simon Doughty and Group CFO Paul Moore joined Moray Fleming, General Manager of Wallem’s Clark office, to officially open our new Philippines office in Clark. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a religious blessing was given and a traditional roast suckling pig was sliced and handed out to everyone to enjoy during the opening party.

Drive for efficiency & automation The Clark office provides four main functions – 1) The IT Service Desk, run by Service Desk Manager Edmon Quiambao, which supports over 200 vessels in addition to our global offices. 2) The Vessel IT Team under Senior IT Operations Engineer Edmark Sunga, which looks after the provision of equipment for newbuildings and vessels coming into management; and supports the existing and development IT on the Wallem managed fleet of ships. 3) Local Office IT Operations Management, overseen by Regional IT Manager, Gladwyn Ilustre. 4) A Vessel Accounts team which was recently established under the leadership of Financial Process Analyst, Romina Serrano is already smoothly handling the accounts for almost 120 vessels. Looking to the future, the Group is striving for greater efficiency and automation in every aspect of our business. With this in mind, a plan has been put in place which calls for the Group to invest further resources in our Clark office to establish it as a Shared Services Centre. To help achieve this aim and accommodate the expected growth, the investment in the new office was approved by the Wallem Group Board. General Manager, Moray Fleming says that this office marks a new chapter for the teams in Clark and represents recognition from the Group that the work and efforts being done there are adding value to the greater organization. “We look forward to further developing the capabilities of the teams here in Clark and becoming more integrated in the TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

move forward for efficiencies, cost control and of course quality service delivery to the Groups’ clients.” he says.

Designing a functional and engaging space While the actual square footage of the new office space is the same as the previous one, the building is new and so it lends itself to us making the layout and design more contemporary and staff-friendly. Having a professional yet comfortable office was an especially important goal given our workforce in Clark is made up of millennials who are said to place much value on increased engagement and open and regular communication with superiors and to choose to stay in jobs because they find the work engaging, meaningful and fulfilling. To this end, special 120 degree workstations were designed to maximize space, interaction and communication. The desks were organised according to workflow and process for maximum productivity and various types of relaxed and casual collaboration areas including a large café space, were incorporated to enable increased communication across teams and between staff and managers.

Incorporating a local aesthetic

Rather than just create a bland and featureless office, the design team, led by Group Business Process Manager Nathalie Quiquempoix, paid attention to creating a space that was sensitive to both the local culture and environment. Nathalie says, “We wanted to create a pleasurable space that our staff felt both happy and comfortable in and connected to.” One example of this was bringing in local street artists to


paint a special mural in the café which incorporates native trees and the nearby dormant volcano Mount Pinatubo. Nathalie also had various décor items specially handmade from local indigenous communities to liven up the meeting rooms and give them a Filipino flavour. A competition was organised whereby our Clark staff were invited to send photos of their local heritage sites, scenes or crafts, etc. The winning photos have been incorporated into a large wall collage where they have been mixed with photos of our seafarers, vessels and other shipping images. This collage has pride of place on one of the walls in the office’s main thoroughfare.

What do our colleagues in Clark think of their new office? Data Process Analyst, Business Process Outsourcing, Vincent Dela Cruz says,

“I really like our new office - it’s a modern, well organized and very pleasant place to work and it has a nice ambiance. I particularly like the fact that we now have three separate meetings rooms so we can do simultaneous conferences without conflicting schedules. We have enough space to work in an organised way and I feel I can be more productive. Having this new space is definitely motivating.”

Document Controller, Business Process Outsourcing, Leny Gargia says,

“I love it to the point where I said ‘Wow!’” out loud at first sight. My favorite aspect of the new space is the mural which symbolises our magnificent Filipino culture. The office has such funky bright colours which uplift my mood and inspire me to be more productive and work more efficiently. This comfortable new office means a lot – it really shows us that the Wallem Group values the work we are doing.”

“I was part of the project team for the office move. Seeing the project develop from an empty building to a fully-functional and fun office was so rewarding! My favourite aspect

is the big mural which has photos representing us – places the staff or their parents are from and those showing our culture, arts and tourist spots. The new open plan space allows us to easily interact with our teammates and there are plenty of spaces (collaboration areas as well as meeting rooms) for group and team discussions. Having this new office means that the management believes in us - that we have the right talent to provide great support to the Group.”

Senior Data Analyst, Business Process Outsourcing, Lovely Jimenez says,

“It is both more spacious and cosy. We can now see one another rather than be shut away in separate small rooms; which definitely brings a more positive and friendly atmosphere. Having this new office really means a lot as it signifies that our work and efforts for the company are recognised. It also helps us feel that we are an important part of the Group.”

IT Support Engineer, Kim Carlo Mangune says,

“The new office is great. The way our desks have been arranged has maximized the space and we love being able to quickly reach out to one another or pop to a nearby collaboration area together to discuss and accomplish our tasks. We are excited for this new office and for the fact that the management sees further potential in us.”

Well done to the team involved in the whole move process – Gladwyn Ilustre who ensured that all the IT was all set up ahead of the move, Nathalie Quiquempoix who was instrumental in coming up with the layout, design and overall look and feel, ensuring the space would meet the needs of the Clark staff and last but not least Group Business Process Analyst, Rosell Camaya who did a fantastic job in coordinating the move, liaising with the various vendors and ensuring that the project ran on track. Thanks are also due to all of the Clark staff who were involved in the move in one way or another and have contributed to ensuring that it was business as usual come the morning of our first day in the new office. Supporting Seafarers & Local Communities

T

he Women of Wallem (WoW) provide critical support to our seafarers and their families. This non-profit organization has different ‘chapters’ in our seafarers’ home towns and regularly organizes various community outreach programs and philanthropic activities related to health, wellness, education and well-being. The Women of Wallem help to organise get togethers for our seafarers families’ at various times during the year. These get-togethers help to reinforce a sense of community and enable our seafarers’ families to get much needed support from both Wallem and one another. The Manila chapter of the Women of Wallem (WoW) and the team in Westminster organised a Halloween party for seafarers and their families. Capt. Ceferino Leal handed out Halloween treats to the delighted kids. The teams in Manila also joined the Women of Wallem to celebrate Christmas together along with our seafarers and their families. A special party was held with fun games and presents for the children.

Giving back to those in Need

Wallem agency team supports donation to Orphanage

T

he Wallem China Ship Agency team were delighted to help out Tsakos Shipping on a special request to purchase football boots in China, on their behalf, for a charity that they sponsor in Ghana. When Tsakos reached out for help, Pony Chen and her team did not hesitate to follow up with their request and ensured that the shoes reached their destination as quickly and smoothly as possible and in time for the celebration of St Nicholas which was attended by a Tsakos representative. Tsakos sponsors the St. Nicholas Charity Foundation, which is a school for children between the age of 3 and 12 in Ghana which aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged families living in Tema, New Town. These children would not be educated if the school had not accepted them. Football is the most popular sport in Ghana but sports equipment is lacking. The shoes (football boots) were destined for St. Nicholas Charity preparatory school so that the children there can enjoy playing their favourite sport. Hong Kong Food Angels

T

o mark the beginning of the New Year and give back to those in need during the holiday season, our Hong Kong colleagues volunteered to take part in a local food assistance programme. Food Angel is a local NGO which aims to both elimate food waste and provide food to those in need. The charity serves over 6,000 nutritious hot meals and food packs to more than 100 charity partners across Hong Kong every day. Colleagues helped with food preparation and packing over three days in January and February.

Wallem Sponsors Sedan Chair Race

T

he 43rd Sedan Chair Race was held last October in Hong Kong. The race sees teams race up from Mt. Kellett Road to the Peak in decorated sedan chairs and fancy dress costumes. Funds raised from the event go to helping lesser known local charities in Hong Kong with limited resources to do fundraising themselves. Wallem Group was pleased to sponsor the Sedan Chair Race again this year, this time as t-shirt sponsor. Our CEO Simon Doughty was also invited to judge the competition and present awards to the winning teams. We welcome volunteers to enter a Sedan Chair Race team for the coming event this October. Wallem Team Come 5th Place in Sailor’s Society HK Trek

T

he Wallem Coast Busters came 5th out of 15 teams in the Sailor’s Society 2017 HK Trek. The trek took the teams over hills in the south of Hong Kong Island, starting in Big Wave Bay and ending in Repulse Bay, covering a total distance of 27km. Well done to the team in completing this tough challenge! Funds raised from the trek will go towards helping seafarers via the Sailor’s Society.

he Wallem Singapore cricket team took part in the Mariners Premier League Cricket Tournament in October 2017. Wallem ended up among the top 8 teams out of a total of 28 participating teams, just losing in the quarter final by a close margin. Well done team!

Pacific Basin Soccer Sixes

ongratulations to the Wallem team who took part in this year’s Pacific Basin Soccer Sixes held on 26th November in Hong Kong. The event was organised by the Young People in Shipping Network (YSPN) and was the biggest event in the six years it has been running – 19 teams took part and over 265 players and fans attended. ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS

Experience with Energy Saving Systems

A

s ship managers, we have been fortunate to have been trusted by our clients with a good number of new vessels. Most of these are state-of-the-art vessels equipped with the latest energy saving systems and devices. Since we have taken over these new vessels, we have been using these various systems onboard and to their absolute fullest potential, monitoring the results that we are getting from them. and, of course, for the environment. At anchorage, aux engine no.1 or 2 is in operation so that exhaust gas heat can be used to produce steam and so donkey boiler fuel consumption reduces. Having a low temperature in the engine room then reduces the air flow rate requirement and so the ventilation fan, fitted with a Variable Frequency drive, runs at the lowest possible rpm which consumes 2kw per fan. Only one sea water pump operates at low load and there is an 80% energy saving.”

Types of devices and systems Energy saving devices fitted on our managed vessels come in various shapes and forms. These include wake improvement ducts, pre-swirl vanes and propeller hub vortex fins. As for Energy saving systems, we have vessels with energy recovery systems, e.g. waste heat recovery systems such as the Auxiliary engine gas boiler that utilises the waste heat from the Auxiliary engine exhaust for steam production, which would otherwise require an oil fired boiler to be used. Doing this we reduce fuel and hence reduce the environmental impact through GHG and other emissions. Another widely used and efficient energy saving type of device is the Variable Frequency Drive that saves energy by automatically controlling motor speeds. These systems are used on equipment such as engine room ventilation fans and sea water pumps.

Energy savings in the fleet Chief Engineer, Balijinder Singh shares his experience using energy saving systems onboard. He tells us, “In my time aboard the ship, and through use of the ESS, I have witnessed auxiliary engine fuel oil consumption per day coming down from 4.2 MT to 3.3 MT – a fuel saving of 0.9 MT per day. This is a big plus for the owners / charterers

Many of our vessels operated out of our Hamburg office have Becker Mewis Ducts fitted which, under the right conditions, can lead to energy savings of up to 8%, with lower SOx and CO2 emissions, which is beneficial to the environment.

Energy Efficient Management Apart from any Energy Saving Devices and systems fitted on board our vessels we recognise that it is also essential that we carry out an overall energy efficiency management on board all our vessels in our fleet. For example; we are always looking into voyage optimization with weather routing or trim optimization, we are looking into reduction of onboard power demand and we are taking every step to ensure that we keep the ship’s machinery in optimal condition.
