KITCHENS

of the future

S

taying home more in the last year has taught us a lot about how our home’s function – or lack thereof. As a result, designers have been busier than ever with renovation requests. Not surprisingly, there is one room we get asked to remodel most often – the kitchen. The hardest-working room in the house is also the busiest. Storage, prepping, cooking, serving and clean up all take place in one space. Constant use means it wears out faster. If upgrades are in your future, here are some of the latest ideas to think about. The modern kitchen is easy to clean with non-porous surfaces, sleek cabinetry without fussy hardware, and smart technology in all the appliances.

From smart appliances to robot’s that pour wine, designer Jane Lockhart breaks down what the future of kitchen renovation looks like

Pantries are not new, but how we are using them is. Along with storage for dry goods, we’re adding in counters and outlets to keep small appliances out of sight, but still accessible and easy to use. Kitchens have been taking on a streamlined look. Customization allows us to panel refrigerator doors to blend into the face of the cabinetry. Handles and knobs are disappearing, too. Door profiles are smaller and flat panels are also gaining popularity. A common request these days is for cosy nooks. Installing a window seat or corner nook allows you to be near the action, but away from the fray to read over recipes or curl up and watch the activity.
