a large great room is a much better use of the square footage. formal living rooms, as well as dining rooms are used very rarely and necessitate the purchase of furniture for a space that is largely unused Over the past several years dining rooms have become a thing of the past. People prefer a large dining area that is part of both the kitchen and the family room. This open space allows for intimate dining and large dinner parties because they are not restricted by the walls, just the size of your table and the amount of friends and family you have that all get along. Formal living rooms also seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur and have been replaced by the “great room”. I personally think a large great room is a much better use of the square footage. My son had a friend in high school that was not allowed to go into the living room/dining room because his Mom’s insistence that the vacuum lines remain undisturbed. My son was not aware of this and walked into the afore mentioned rooms eating a sandwich. His friend nearly had a heart attack and quickly got the vacuum out and repaired the damage made by the foot prints and possibility of bread crumbs.
