Chamber President’s Message As we look back over this past year and reflect on the fantastic accomplishments we’ve had, so many of them would not have happened without the great efforts of our business community. A huge “thank you” is given for all that you do to support the Payson Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce. This will be my sixth year as a member of the Payson Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce. I do have to admit that my first three years on the chamber were minimal participation at the most. I did not see the full potential of what I could help do for those in our community until I really dove head first into the chamber of commerce. I can honestly say that as I look back over this last year, the friends and business relationships that I have created will last a lifetime, regard-

less of our many paths. I love doing business with those in our community. The chamber is here to help you create your personal/business “Rolodex” with resources from our local communities. One of our main goals as your board is to promote awareness for each of our business owners. We want to help you continue to grow your business as well as grow our community. If you will actively participate with the chamber and get involved in the great events and activities that will bring those new faces into your place of business, you will see the same benefit that I have seen in these last few years. I am truly honored to be your chamber president for this upcoming year. I look forward to meeting

Business of the Year

America First Credit Union

America First Credit Union has been named Business of the Year for 2017 by the Payson Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce. America First - Utah’s number one credit union - has proudly served the communities of the Wasatch Front since 1939. With a singular focus on their membership, they provide local families and businesses with the tools they need to achieve financial health and success. Because of the organization’s unique not-for-profit structure, it treats the members as if they own the credit union - because they do. Each has an equal share of ownership, regardless of the size of his or her deposits or loans, whether they are $200,000 or $200. The America First Board of Directors is composed of volunteers who work without compensation and are elected by their fellow members to ensure the credit union’s mission of service is carried out. Founded in 1939 at Fort Douglas in Utah, America First initially had 59 members with their total deposits of $25 being held in a Prince Albert tobacco can. To-

day, the credit union is the sixth largest in the country in terms of membership and 11th most substantial in assets. It operates 124 locations including 17 in Utah County. This growth, stability and commitment to being on the cutting edge of technology allows the organization to offer many benefits and no-cost services including free checking with no minimum-balance requirements, free Visa debit cards on approved credit, free online banking with free bill pay and direct deposit, free mobile banking with mobile deposit and mobile card security, free financial counseling, no-fee access to more than 36,000 ATMs and so much more. Further benefits of America First include the low rates that accompany its consumer and business loans. These rates are consistently better than those of a profit-driven institution. From auto and RV loans to Visa credit cards with rewards and cash-back options as well as commercial and SBA loans, the credit union provides a complete array of services for personal and business financing.

Proud to serve the Payson-Santaquin area AS YOUR

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Since 1939, America First Credit Union has helped our members achieve their financial goals with high-quality products & services, including free checking, free mobile & online banking, low-rate personal & business loans, and so much more.

AutoWorks Car Care Celebrates 20 Years of Service Since 1998, AutoWorks Car Care has been the first choice for vehicle repair and maintenance in South Utah County. The owner, Shaun Martin and his friendly staff always put the customer first and his ASE certified technicians work hard to “Fix it Right the First Time!” While checking out every vehicle and before recommending any service, Shaun Martin asks himself one question: “What if this were my Mom’s car? What services would I recommend and which ones can wait a little while?” His parents live 550 miles away in Oregon, so he can’t personally work on their cars. When Shaun started AutoWorks Car Care, he wanted his shop to be the one that would treat its customers like he would want his parents to be treated. He and two brothers worked in a repair shop in Provo together, before each branching out to start their own shop. Ryan in Shelley, Idaho, Rodney serving North Utah County in American Fork and Shaun’s to serve southern Utah County in Payson. Shaun trains his technicians to always do a bumper to bumper visual inspection on every car that comes in, no matter what the person comes in for, so they can help their customers make the best informed decisions they can. That way, people have a better idea what kind of repairs or maintenance they may need now, or down the road.

Shaun knows that people don’t have a lot of money for unexpected repairs and maintenance on their cars, so he helps his customers prioritize their car’s issues so that they can plan better to schedule future repairs and maintenance. AutoWorks Car Care has the distinction of being the only AAA Approved and Gephardt approved Auto Repair shop in South Utah County, with many bays to take care of a variety of auto problems, from alignments to engine replacements, or even just getting the oil changed. They do it all. Look for their customer reviews and monthly specials at autoworkscarcare.com

Payson Mayor’s Message Dear Citizens, As your newly elected mayor, I am excited about the future of our city. Thank you for the support you have shown me. Payson is a wonderful place to live and has many things to offer it residents and its future residents. I would like to thank Mayor Moore and the previous Payson City Council for all of their hard work and dedication to the citizens of Payson City. Thanks also to the administrative staff and employees without whom the city would not prosper. We have very dedicated and capable employees. As we move forward, we need to prepare for the future growth that is coming. We must be ready. We must grow so that we can afford to offer the services that we all want and need. We must make decisions now that will allow us to manage that growth so it does not overwhelm us. We have started planning for that projected growth by committing to do three important plans, all at the same time. They are General Plan, Master Plan & Strategic Plan. Many of you will be asked to participate in committees and focus groups as well as attend public hearings. Many challenging questions will have to be answered as we proceed. We have a wonderful community with resources and activities that enhance our quality of life. To name just a few, they are: - Larry Miller’s Tour of Utah has come to Payson in 2013

and 2016. In the past, they have finished a stage of their race here. This year, 2018, they are coming again, but this time they will start and finish the stage here. - The Scottish Festival in Memorial Park on July 13-14, 2018. - The Western Heritage Dutch Oven and Concert at the Peteetneet Outdoor Theater on July 14, 2018. - The Annual Salmon Supper on Aug. 3, 2018. - Mountain View Hospital’s Concert on Aug. 30, 2018. - The Payson Onion Days Celebration Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, 2018. We are also celebrating 120 years of providing our citizens with electrical service - from 1879 to 2017. Our Industrial Business Park is growing. We are experiencing new residential growth. We have also had new retail businesses open and are anticipating more. Wasatch Mental Health has recently completed a new office building and the Q90 (Software Development) building is nearing completion. Our future is waiting for us to plan! Please become involved with the planning process so that we can preserve our quality of life. Together, we can ensure that Payson will be a city we can take pride in for years to come. Payson City Events PAYSON GOLDEN ONION DAYS

This annual celebration was first held in 1929 as an opportunity for residents and former residents to renew old friendships and make new ones. Originally known as the Onion Harvest and Homecoming, the event honored Payson’s status as an agricultural district and an outstanding producer of onions. The celebration was later renamed Payson City Golden Onion Days and that is the name that remains to this day. Golden Onion Days, which will mark its 88th anniversary in 2018, is held each year on Labor Day weekend and includes events such as concerts, a carnival, a baby contest, a car show, a Dutch oven cook off, 5K and 10K races and fireworks.

SALMON SUPPER

For more than 60 years, crowds of people have journeyed to Payson City each August to enjoy the Payson Salmon Supper, a tradition in the city since 1954. Thousands of pounds of fresh salmon from Alaska are flown in for this event and cooked over open fruitwood fires by local firemen. The hungry participants come from throughout the area, some arriving by busload, to enjoy the meal in Payson’s Memorial Park. The lines are long but move quickly, and musicians and singers perform while attendees anticipate enjoying the main attraction - the food! Sides include baked potatoes, corn on the cob, salad, roll and dessert. Originally organized by local congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Salmon Supper is now run by Payson City.

Payson City Events PAYSON SCOTTISH FESTIVAL

The annual Payson Scottish Festival and Highland Games event celebrates Scottish traditions in all forms: dance, music, food, competition and entertainment. The first festival was organized more than 30 years ago as part of Payson’s Golden Onion Days, but today the festival is held for two days each July. The first event, the Friday night Ceilidh (kay-lee), is held at the bandstand in Payson’s Memorial Park and features performers and dancers regaling the crowd with Scottish music, song, stories and dance. The next day, events begin with a 9 a.m. parade on Payson’s Main Street followed by the opening ceremonies, which include music by bagpipe bands. Visitors can then enjoy a variety of activities ranging from craft and food booths to additional bandstand performances, athletic and bagpipe competitions and a Highland Dance competition. The day wraps up with more music by bagpipe bands and the announcement of competition winners during the closing ceremonies.

Tour of Utah

Payson to host internationally acclaimed Tour of Utah On Aug. 8, Payson City Memorial Park will be transformed into the start and finish line for Stage 2 of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, an international professional cycling race. Known as “America’s Toughest Stage Race,” the Tour of Utah is a week-long men’s professional cycling race featuring some of the best professional cycling teams in the world. The 2018 race, planned for Aug. 6 through 12, marks the 14th year the Tour of Utah has been held. This year’s race will begin with a prologue in St. George on Aug. 6 followed by Stage 1 of the race in Cedar City on Aug. 7. Stage 2 will then be held on Aug. 8 in Payson. Stages 3 through 6 will be held Aug. 9 through 11 in a variety of host cities and venues including Antelope Island State Park, Layton City, Salt Lake City and Snowbird Resort. The race will finish with Stage 6 in Park City on Aug. 12. The Tour of Utah expects the 2018 race to attract a field of more than 120 riders representing more than 16 teams to participate in its seven grueling days of

racing. “The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah will break new ground with its southernmost start amid the red rocks of St. George before traveling north to the ultimate finish line in Park City,” said John Kimball, managing director of the Tour of Utah. “The 2018 race will captivate fans across the state, showcase the beauty of Utah and demonstrate the diversity of our communities and terrain.” This will be the third time Payson has hosted a stage of the Tour of Utah. On Aug. 8, Payson City Memorial Park will be filled with activities for all ages as well as food vendors and entertainment. Admission is free and open to the public. “We are pleased to have Payson City as an official host of the Tour of Utah for a third time,” Kimball said. “We know to expect enthusiastic crowds at the finish line and an outstanding Lifestyle Expo with plenty of local flavor for everyone to enjoy. The 2017 Tour of Utah covered 605 miles of racing and 36,525 feet of climbing with Rob Britton of Rally Cycling winning the overall title. The Tour of Utah is owned by Larry H. Mural Project

Supporters sought for Payson mural project Payson resident Steve Southwick was driving through a California town admiring the murals on the buildings in its downtown area when the thought struck him: the beauty of those artworks could be replicated in Payson. “Payson needs something that will make it a little more distinctive, a little more inviting … and I thought, this is just a good way to bring the community together,” Southwick said. After returning home, Southwick began talking with artists and civic leaders in the Payson area about his idea to bring large public art to his city. Through these discussions, the Payson Mural Project was born. “The idea is that this is going to be a continuing, ongoing develop-

ment through which we do one mural, then find the next space that someone will let us use and do that mural,” said Kyle Vincent, an art teacher at Mt. Nebo Junior High School in Payson. Vincent has joined with Southwick in his efforts to move the mural project forward. Before he began teaching school, Vincent worked as a mural artist, painting for interior designers, business owners and others. As a result, he brings extensive knowledge of how to design and paint murals to the project. However, his teaching experience will also aid the project; the plan is to involve his art students and others in the Payson and Santaquin area in creating the large works of art.

“One of the ideas was, instead of paying a professional artist thousands of dollars, let’s have students in the community do it with help from a professional artist,” Vincent said. Through participating, students can use their work to build their portfolios, but it will also give them real-world experience and help them develop a greater love for the area where they live. The project will also help beautify Payson’s downtown area and bring people downtown to view the art, Vincent said. Before joining the staff at Mt. Nebo Junior High, Vincent worked as an art teacher at North Sanpete Middle School in Moroni where he had his students paint a mural at the end of each school year. “I’ve seen it first-hand when I’ve worked with students to create murals - once it’s up, it’s cool. You can see the pride in their eyes,” Vincent said. “I see that pride for what they’ve accomplished, and that’s what I want to see for this project and also for the community as a whole.” Southwick and Vincent are now working to raise funds for the project as well as generate interest and recruit others to help. Specifically, they are currently looking for people to serve on an advisory board for the project as well as other artists to work with students. “Right now, I’m the only one that is going to be leading these students through the process, but I would love to see other artists get on board,” Vincent said. The vision is to eventually have students from throughout the Payson and Santaquin area who are of junior high or high school age participating in the project.

Mural Project Vincent said the students will meet after school to do their mural work. They will start by meeting with the property owner and discussing ideas, then going back and creating a design. The students will then meet again with the property owner to get approval. “What I want for the kids is for them to have the experience of designing a mural that is beautiful and meaningful at the same time so it can express something - ideas or community, emotion, whatever we want to do,” Vincent said. Presentations regarding the project have been made to the Payson City Council and the Payson Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce, and these community leaders have expressed support for the project, Southwick said. The chamber has agreed to provide matching up to $1,500 for the project. Southwick said as he’s talked with business owners and others in the community, people have seemed enthusiastic about and supportive of the project. In fact, the wall of a building in downtown Payson has already been offered for a mural by the building’s owner, he said. Vincent said funds need to be raised for supplies before that project can proceed, but he expects that completing one mural will boost interest in the overall project. “I feel like once we get it going and we have one mural under our belt, then people will see what we’re about and it will kick off,” Vincent said. Those interested in serving on the advisory board for the Payson Mural Project or in donating money or wall space should contact Steve Southwick at stevesouthwick1240@ gmail.com. Artists interested in joining the project should contact Kyle Vincent at kylenavincent@gmail. com.

Santaquin Orchard Days Each year during the last week of July, the city of Santaquin hosts its Orchard Days celebration. This year’s Orchard Days will be held July 28 through Aug. 4. Named after the area’s plentiful orchards, the celebration includes many different events for all ages. The week begins with the Little Buck-A-Roo Rodeo at the Santaquin Rodeo Arena. This rodeo features events such as sheep riding for kids 7 years old and younger as well as goat tying, break away roping and mini bull riding for other youth. The Family Night event offers events for every member of the family including a children’s parade, a sidewalk chalk art festival, food and craft vendors and musical entertainment. Rowley’s Red Barn hosts the annual Cherry Pit Spit where residents compete to see who can spit their pit the farthest. The Saturday in the Park event features a car show, a craft boutique, a talent show and a horse shoe tournament. On the final two nights is the RMPRA Orchard Days Rodeo. This exciting event takes place in the Santaquin Rodeo Arena. Fireworks follow the rodeo action each night.

Santaquin City

Santaquin getting new elementary school Nebo School District is constructing a third elementary school in Santaquin in order to better accommodate current students and anticipate future residential growth in the city. Apple Valley Elementary School will open this fall at 105 E. 770 North in Santaquin with the beginning of the new school year. It will join Santaquin Elementary School and Orchard Hills Elementary School as one of Nebo district’s three schools in Santaquin for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. “The idea is to reduce the number of kids in these two schools (Santaquin and Orchard Hills) so that growth can take place in all three schools,” said Chad Argyle, who has been named principal of Apple Val-

ley Elementary. Argyle is currently working as principal of Santaquin Elementary, a position he has held for nine years. The new boundaries for the three elementary schools have been set by the district and can be viewed in detail at www.nebo.edu. Some students now attending both Santaquin and Orchard Hills elementary schools will be affected by the changes, although more students from Santaquin Elementary will be drawn to the new school than from Orchard Hills. The Apple Valley school is very similar in size and floor plan to Meadow Brook Elementary School in Springville. Santaquin Elementary was built 34 years ago and Orchard Hills opened about 12 years ago.

Nebo district tries to keep the number of pupils in each classroom the same, generally from 26 to 28 students per classroom, Argyle said. New classes with new teachers aren’t created until enough students exist to fill the new class. Argyle said Santaquin Elementary currently has five fourth-grade classes in portable classrooms outside the school and no empty classrooms within the school. After Apple Valley opens, all three Santaquin elementary schools will have a few empty classrooms that can be filled as growth occurs. Argyle said teachers at Santaquin and Orchard Hills had the opportunity to choose to move to Apple Valley to teach. That option combined with the natural attrition of employees means he is only looking to hire two new teachers for Apple Valley. He will, however, be hiring a lot of “classified,” or non-teaching, staff such as secretaries and technicians. Those interested in these positions should watch the district’s website for their postings. There will be a ribbon cutting for the new school before it opens and students and parents will have an opportunity to tour the school before school begins in the fall, he said. “I have appreciated this experience at Santaquin Elementary. I love the people, I love the kids, I love the parents, I love the teachers, and the relationships that I’ve established are cherished,” Argyle said, adding that he looks forward to the challenge of building a culture in his new school where students can thrive.

Chad Argyle named Apple Valley principal The Nebo School Board of Education has appointed Chad Argyle as the principal of Apple Valley Elementary School in Santaquin for Nebo School District. Argyle earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Weber State University and his master’s degree in educational leadership from Brigham Young University. Argyle has served as the principal of Santaquin Elementary School for the past nine years. He was the principal at Taylor Elementary School for four years and the assistant principal at Springville Middle School for one year. Argyle taught at Brockbank Elementary School for seven years and was awarded the Teacher of the Year

Award for Brockbank Elementary. Argyle served as a member of the Santaquin City Library Board from 2010 to 2014, including serving as its president. He has served with the Santaquin Volunteer Fire Department from 1998 to now. Argyle was presented with the Nebo District Instructional Leader of the Year Award and was named by Santaquin’s mayor as Citizen of the Year for Dedicated Community Service. “Every person, especially the children, in the Nebo School District I have worked with has influenced my personal and professional growth. To be a part of such an amazing profession filled with exceptional people is a very humbling experience for my family and

Santaquin looks to accomodate future growth Santaquin City sees the potential for large development west of its borders in the future, and it is working to be proactive in handling that growth as well as ongoing residential growth inside the city. Economic Development Corporation of Utah completed the first “Mega Site” certification in Utah in 2017. This 3,500-acre site is located at 14000 West Highway 6 in Elberta. According to EDCUtah’s website, “Mega Sites are large acreage land sites pre-qualified to house a landmark expansion or relocation project (i.e., 1000+ jobs or $1 billion in capital expenditure).” EDCUtah has put together a great deal of information about the Elberta Mega Site including

transportation and utilities maps, cultural resources and geotechnical reports and wetlands and air quality memos. That information will now be used to market the area to corporations looking to relocate or expand their businesses. “With its central location, talented and hardworking labor force, and business-friendly laws, Utah is the premier state for large scale industrial development in the West. The Elberta Mega Site is situated in the heart of this vast landscape, and already possesses most of the assets necessary to develop into a world-class industrial site,” states the EDCUtah website. government and private industry to attract companies to Utah and grow existing Utah businesses. “There could be a lot of growth that comes because of that designation,” said Jason Bond, Community Development Director for Santaquin City. “There could be a lot of jobs created and the people who would fill those positions may likely want to live nearby in Santaquin.” While the timing of growth west of Santaquin is unknown, the city is planning now to handle the impacts that would come from that significant growth. If new jobs are created in the Elberta area, the main way to get there from Interstate 15 is Santaquin’s Main Street. Part of Main Street has five lanes - two lanes each way plus a turning lane - but the city plans to expand all of Main Street to five lanes. Main Street is a state road, so Santaquin is working with UDOT to see the widening take place. The city is also currently working on obtaining regional transportation funds to help pay for the project. “With all that growth, it’s something we want to be prepared for, and we don’t want to be experiencing heavily congested traffic conditions while trying to widen the road at the same time,” Bond said. “With increased residential growth happening inside Santaquin’s borders, Main Street needs to be widened regardless of potential growth elsewhere,” Bond said. During the past couple of years, Santaquin has issued approximately 200 new housing unit permits per year (including both single-family and multi-family

Santaquin City units), and that pace of building is expected to continue into the near future. Part of accommodating that growth means facilitating economic development and providing needed services within the city, particularly a grocery store. “The most common question we get from Santaquin residents is, ‘When are we getting a grocery store?’ so that’s one of our top priorities,” Bond said. The city is diligently working to bring a grocery store and other businesses to Santaquin, and Bond said he feels the city is making great progress. “We’re excited to see some of this economic development happen within the next couple of years,” he said.

Recreation & Area Attractions PETEETNEET MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS CENTER   The historic Peteetneet School opened its doors in 1902 and served local students for many decades. It was named after Indian Chief Peteetneet who have been very friendly and helpful to the early Payson settlers. In 1987, Nebo School District abandoned the building and the property reverted to Payson City. A concerned group of citizens raised funds to restore the building and it is now home to the Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center. The museum hosts various art exhibits throughout the year and has a permanent collection as well of art and historical artifacts. The School Room exhibit shows what a school room would have looked like when the Peteetneet School opened, and the Freedom Room exhibits offer an overview of Utah and United States military history. Other exhibits feature blacksmith shop equipment and fashions from 1850 through 1990.

It is a closely guarded secret of the local residents who enjoy getting away for summer evenings of campfires and cooler temperatures. Santaquin Canyon provides a quiet access to the Nebo Scenic Byway and recreation areas such as Tinny Flats Campground, Trumboldt Day Use Area, and many US Forest Service Trails. It also provides access to several pristine natural areas such as the Nebo Wilderness Area and Santaquin Meadows. It is home to many species of wildlife including wild turkey, coyote, cougar, mule dear, elk, and black bear to name a few. It is known as a destination for ice and mixed climbing. It is slowly being established as a rock climbing destination as well. Several established bolted sport routes are located on the limestone cliffs. In winter, there is a good mix of ice routes available. The Canyon Road closes for winter at Trumbolt picnic area in early December. ATV use is illegal in Santaquin Canyon, but snowmobiles are allowed if there is at least one foot of snow.

Recreation & Area Attractions UTAH FARMING HERITAGE DISTRICT

The fertile land that attracted the early pioneers to the Santaquin area has held true to its promise, and today the area is the second-largest producer of tart cherries in the nation and a provider of fresh produce to many local grocers in the region. In 2007, the Utah State Legislature recognized Santaquin as the Utah Farming Heritage District. The city’s general plan uses “smart growth” techniques to preserve resources for future generations while providing economic stability to the city and area farmers. Visitors can experience the beauty of the area by simply driving down the country lanes, stopping at many of the local fruit and produce stands, taking a tour of the Mountainland Apples packing sheds or picking up some ice cream and chocolatecovered cherries from The Red Barn. Feel free to experience the picturesque orchards year round, but please remember that they are private property.
