This year, we celebrate 79 years since the First Steel Days Celebration!

For over 100 years the city of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community, and residents . This annual celebration is now known as Steel Days, but throughout the years the festivities have also been called Timber Day, Liberty Day, and Poultry Day

TIMBER DAY

Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment, and games . It began around 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers ” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out, and shared it with others There were activities for young and old, with a horseshoe competition, foot races, and ball games . Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904

LIBERTY DAY

Liberty Day had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage . The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park . There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horse-drawn wagons . When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels .

There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States There was a baseball game, dance, and fireworks The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events

POULTRY DAY

In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic There was also a parade, ball game, races, carnival, and a program and dance . Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s lap She simply wiped it up and went on with the day

The Sunrise Salute, or firing the cannon, continued at daybreak There was a free lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served There was a flower show, art show, and an all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater .

There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression Poultry Day was held in July 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war, with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944

STEELDAYS 2024 14
Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Provo . The

parade was presented twice for many years - at 10:00 a .m from 500 West Main Street to 500 East, and then at 6:00 p .m . when the route was reversed

The duration of Steel Days expanded from one day to three days, then four and five days, and eventually to ten days . Currently, Steel Days runs for eight days and includes over 30 events

Vehicles were also an important part of Steel Days history In 1961, the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) held a drawing for a Ford Falcon However, it did not prove to be enough of a draw and there was a $1,500 deficit after the ticket sales were tallied The next year, the car was a sporty Thunderbird and ticket sales increased dramatically The evening program featured a singing group from Ogden, “The Osmond Brothers,” complete with Donny, who even then stole the show

In 1963, the city used a smaller approach, calling it “Community Day” It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks Despite its success, there was no celebration in 1964 or 1965 . Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration There were, however, abbreviated queen pageants held

In 1966, a new committee was formed, and it was again a larger celebration that was now held in July . They also resumed using the Steel Days name In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed, and boat racing was added to the list of events The “City of Fun” Carnival made its Steel Days debut in 1968

The festivities remained mostly the same for the next several decades, with several of the events being part of the festivities every year and others being added or eliminated . In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer

In 2018, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce again became an integral part of the Steel Days celebration when it contracted with American Fork City to manage and operate Steel Days, a role that it has been proud to fulfill since That year,

we added the Kickball Tournament and the Steel Days Scramble Golf Tournament to the event lineup

In 2019, we added Kids Splash Night and the Pickleball Tournament and made the decision to move the carnival to Art Dye Park after it became apparent that it had outgrown its home of 50 years at Robinson Park .

In 2020, during the pandemic, we decided that our community needed a chance to connect and celebrate and held the 75-year anniversary celebration of Steel Days For the first time in the history of American Fork, we brought the parade to the people with a 23 mile route through the city

In 2021, we brought back one of the historical Steel Days events, the Variety Show, and renamed it American Fork’s Got Talent; in 2022, a Cornhole Tournament and Teen Pool Party were added to the festivities .

New Steel Days events for 2023 included a Mario Kart Tournament, Wiffle Ball Tournament, and the Guns vs . Hoses Softball Game We also added a state of the art Drone Show to help kick off the festivities and extended the parade route, almost doubling its length, to accommodate our city’s growing population

In 2024, we are changing the schedule a bit to again include two Saturdays, moving the Car Show, Car Cruise, and Drone Show to July 13, the first day of the Steel Days Celebration Whether Steel Days has been a family tradition for several years or this will be your first time celebrating with us, you are invited to come and enjoy all of the fun that Steel Days has to offer and make some memories of your own!

American Fork High School 7:00 PM

As my year of serving as Miss American Fork comes to an end, I am overflowing with gratitude and love for my hometown . I was the little girl who insisted on wearing a sparkly Belle dress and uncomfortable glass slipper heels in Disneyland, despite the blisters they gave me To say that being a real-life princess has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember is an understatement . Seeing this dream turn into a reality has been nothing short of incredible .

From participating in Steel Days events to becoming a certified CPR instructor and graduating from nursing school debt-free, I have had so many amazing opportunities because of the Miss America Organization One of the greatest privileges I had during my year was traveling to Washington, D .C . to advocate for my service initiative, “The Red Heart Project ” I had the opportunity to speak with national legislators from Utah about passing the HEARTS Act and Access to AEDs Act . Both aim to implement cardiac emergency response plans, AED equipment, and CPR education in all K-12 schools This is just one of the many times that my title has helped me to launch my service initiative, and for that, I am incredibly thankful and humbled .

Another memorable event from this year was touring the Harrington Building with my grandmother Growing up, she told me stories of her elementary school days at Harrington As we walked through the building, she shared countless more stories about her time there as a young girl It was such a unique and

special experience that I got to share with her I could go on for hours talking about events from this past year, but the last I would like to share is the renaming of Mountain Meadow Park to Monarch Park It was inspiring to see a class of elementary school kids pushing for the preservation of monarch butterflies in our city I remember raising monarchs in my kindergarten class and seeing many of these beautiful creatures throughout American Fork as I grew up . It’s also not everyday you get a butterfly named after you

I am extremely grateful to the city of American Fork, especially Mayor Frost, and to the many others who made all these experiences possible My biggest takeaway from this year is that what is meant for you will not pass you by I will soon end a chapter that has been filled with unforgettable memories, challenges overcome, and triumphs celebrated . It is a moment that marks both an end and a beginning—the end of serving as Miss American Fork, but the beginning of new adventures and new opportunities

The Lou Melendez family owns and operates the City of Fun Carnival, which appears in American Fork every year during Steel Days . American Fork accepted and the carnival is still a part of Steel Days today . At other towns, the carnival offers dollar day on opening day only The prices have increased according to the expenses, but in American Fork the rides only require one ticket each if purchased as part of the SteelDeal promotion .

FOR ENTRY AND WAIVERS: https://www steeldaysaf com/grand-parade

The Steel Days Grand Parade will be on Saturday, July 20 at 9:00 a m The route will be the same as it was last year, which was extended from previous years It will start at 300 W Main St and head east on Main Street to 100 E The parade will then turn left and head north to 300 N , then take a right on 300 N . and head east until 600 E ., where it will turn left and end at the high school

It is our goal to make the parade as entertaining and enjoyable as possible . In order to do so, we need to make safety our highest priority Please stay out of the road since many floats and parade vehicles have limited lines of sight Everyone loves seeing excited children collecting candy and prizes and we want to continue this tradition . Please help us to do this by not allowing children to run into the road to collect candy . Parade participants have been instructed to distribute candy near the sides of the road

As the parade concludes, please take pride in our community and keep it clean by collecting trash that is around you or that you see and depositing it into the trash receptacles that will be placed along the parade route . Please remember Steel Days and the Grand Parade are meant to bring the community together and celebrate our great city Let’s have fun and be respectful to everyone around us including spectators, parade entries, and volunteers

AS AMERICAN FORK CONTINUES TO GROW, we have seen an increase in the number of people trying to reserve spots along the parade route . The committee respectfully requests that reservation of spots not take place until Friday, July 19 after 5:00 p m and that spectators be respectful of businesses, churches, residents, and others who own property along the parade route

Here are the top 3 advantages of investing in an annuity:

1. Steady Income Stream: Annuities can provide a dependable source of income, ensuring you have money coming in regularly, which can be especially valuable in retirement. This predictability can help cover living expenses and reduce the risk of outliving your savings.

2. Tax Benefits: Many annuities o er tax-deferred growth, meaning you don't pay taxes on the earnings until you withdraw the funds. This can lead to potentially lower tax liabilities, allowing your money to grow more e iciently.

3. Customization: Annuities come in various forms, such as fixed, variable, or indexed. This variety allows you to choose an annuity that aligns with your risk tolerance and financial goals.

MESSAGES FROM

My best memory of Steel Days is watching all three of my kids march in the parade . I loved hearing the AFHS band coming and getting to see my kids come marching by, knowing their hard work is paying off and proud of the way they represent our city

I’ve always loved the Steel Days Parade The past couple of years my wife and I have been able to walk down 300 N to Pioneer Cemetery Park and watch all the cars and floats that drive by It brings out so many people from the community and provides another excuse to meet people or say hi to neighbors Watching the kids get excited for the candy getting thrown out or seeing the creativity of the different floats that enter the parade makes it something new every year while also bringing out the nostalgia of youth and small town America

The first year that I helped to plan Steel Days was dizzying There was a lot of work involved and many moving parts I remember getting to the end of the week and feeling relief as I sat down in the grass to wait for the Big Show . At one point, I stood up to give my legs a break and looked around To my surprise, the park had filled to bursting with families who had gathered to celebrate and have fun together That was the payoff for the work; seeing that surprise crowd of smiling neighbors

Growing up, my dad was in charge of Steel Days, and I remember how much fun I had going down and helping him build and set up the stage in Rotary Park, right on the baseball diamond There was this huge grandstand at that time where people would come and sit to watch the variety show through the fence of the ball field Funny that all those who wanted to watch the show would fit on those bleachers Later on, the fire department would launch fireworks from behind that same stage At that time, they were still lighting them manually, and I would watch the Captain walk around with a big torch lighting fuses It might seem like a small thing, but I remember even the smallest details, like grabbing a fistful of potato chips or a pop from all the snacks the firemen had laid out or helping my dad take everything down Steel Days was just the biggest deal for me growing up, and I still love it today

After 45 years of Steel Days, I don’t think I can say I have a single favorite memory . I’m so proud to be working with the Chamber to continue putting it on again! To be honest, the best part of Steel Days is the feeling of community that is ever present As our city continues to grow, sometimes the small town feel is harder to recognize, but when Steel Days is going on, that feeling immediately returns Like celebrating our state champions with an escort down Main Street, Steel Days events allow us to remember the enjoyment of living in a small town while turning our thoughts to the blue collar roots of our steel working ancestors . Steel Days is one of the greatest city celebrations anywhere and a highlight of every summer!

We want to express our gratitude to the countless volunteers who have dedicated their time and efforts to make Steel Days possible this year. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the city of American Fork for their unwavering support and to our generous sponsors for their commitment to the community and financial contributions.

The success of Steel Days relies on the collective effort and dedication of these incredible individuals and organizations. Their contributions ensure that we can come together every July to celebrate our amazing community. We encourage all residents and visitors to take a moment to thank those who have worked tirelessly to bring our city a weeklong celebration of over 30 events. This year, we proudly celebrate the 79th anniversary of Steel Days, honoring the rich history and cherished traditions built by generations of volunteers and are changing the schedule a bit to again include two Saturdays, moving the Car Show, Car Cruise, and Drone Show to July 13, the first day of the 2024 Steel Days celebration.

We invite everyone to join in the festivities, create lasting memories, and celebrate the spirit of American Fork at Steel Days 2024. Come participate, have fun, and make this year’s celebration one to remember!
