Doug Smith is proud to sponsor Steel Days.
Steel Days is a tradition that has brought American Fork City together for 80 years!
Each summer, Steel Days reminds us of what makes American Fork such a special place to live It’s more than a week of fun, it’s a reflection of our shared values, strong roots, and the vibrant spirit that continues to grow across generations Last year, over 33,000 people gathered at Mary and Art Dye Park to enjoy concerts, fireworks, food trucks, the carnival, and family-friendly festivities That incredible turnout is a testament to the deep connection our residents feel toward this celebration, and to one another .
As we look forward to another exciting year, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals who make Steel Days possible Our city staff, local businesses, community sponsors, Chamber of Commerce, and dedicated volunteers give countless hours to ensure each detail
is handled with care Their efforts help create a celebration that not only entertains, but brings joy, pride, and belonging to our residents
Since our city’s founding in 1853, American Fork has grown in remarkable ways, welcoming new families, expanding opportunities, and investing in the kind of community where people truly want to put down roots Steel Days is our opportunity to pause and celebrate that progress . It’s a time when neighbors become friends, families create lifelong memories, and we all get to experience the strength of our community together .
Whether you’re here for the parade, Big Show, car show, carnival, drone show, fireworks, or simply for a good corn dog, I hope you’ll take time to soak in the sights, sounds, and connections that make Steel Days so unforgettable .
Let’s make this year the best yet
Brad Frost MAYOR
This year we celebrate 80 years since the
FThis year, we celebrate 80 years since the first Steel Days celebration! For over 150 years the city of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community, and residents . This annual celebration is now known as Steel Days, but throughout the years the festivities have also been called Timber Day, Liberty Day, and Poultry Day
Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment, and games . It began around 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers ” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out, and shared it with others There were activities for young and old, with a horseshoe competition, foot
races, and ball games Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904
Liberty Day had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage . The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horse-drawn wagons . When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels .
There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States There was a baseball game, dance, and fireworks The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events
In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration . It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic There was also a parade, ball game, races, carnival, and a program and dance . Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s lap She simply wiped it up and went on with the day
The Sunrise Salute, or firing the cannon, continued at daybreak There was a free lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served There was a flower show, art show, and an all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater .
There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression Poultry Day was held in July 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war, with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944
Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Provo . The
parade was presented twice for many years - at 10:00 a .m from 500 West Main Street to 500 East, and then at 6:00 p .m . when the route was reversed
The duration of Steel Days expanded from one day to three days, then four and five days, and eventually to ten days . Currently, Steel Days runs for eight days and includes over 30 events .
Vehicles were also an important part of Steel Days history . In 1961, the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) held a drawing for a Ford Falcon However, it did not prove to be enough of a draw and there was a $1,500 deficit after the ticket sales were tallied The next year, the car was a sporty Thunderbird and ticket sales increased dramatically The evening program featured a singing group from Ogden, “The Osmond Brothers,” complete with Donny, who even then stole the show
In 1963, the city used a smaller approach, calling it “Community Day” It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks Despite its success, there was no celebration in 1964 or 1965 . Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration
There were, however, abbreviated queen pageants held .
In 1966, a new committee was formed, and it was again a larger celebration that was now held in July They also resumed using the Steel Days name . In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed, and boat racing was added to the list of events, and the “City of Fun” Carnival made its Steel Days debut in 1968 .
The festivities remained mostly the same for the next several decades, with several of the events being part of the festivities every year and others being added or eliminated In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer
Since 2018, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce has proudly managed and operated the beloved Steel Days celebration in partnership with American Fork City Over the years, it has grown tremendously, with exciting additions like the Kickball and Golf Tournaments (2018), Kids Splash Night and Pickleball Tournament (2019), and a new home for the carnival at Mary and Art Dye Park In 2020, despite the challenges of the pandemic,
Steel Days’ 75th anniversary was celebrated by bringing the parade directly to the people with a 23-mile route through the city, a first in American Fork history .
Each year has brought new traditions and community favorites, from the return of the Variety Show as American Fork’s Got Talent (2021) to events like the Cornhole Tournament, Teen Pool Party (2022), and the introduction of a stunning Drone Show, Mario Kart Tournament, and extended parade route (2023) In 2024, the schedule was expanded to include two Saturdays and brought back the crowd-favorite Burnout Contest This year, the Pickleball Glowdown has been added and the Drone Show festivities have been expanded to be even bigger and better than ever Whether you’ve celebrated Steel Days for years or are joining us for the first time, we invite you to come enjoy the fun, connect with neighbors, and make lasting memories with us!

Duff Shelley, a beloved community figure and longtime business owner, will serve as Grand Marshal for this year’s Steel Days parade in American Fork, Utah Shelley’s lifelong connection to American Fork makes him an ideal representative for the festivities, honoring his nearly sevendecade business legacy in the city .
Growing up when American Fork was a small community of only 3,000 people, Shelley recalls dirt roads, the railroad running through Main Street, and the electric train linking Payson to Salt Lake City His childhood was rich with adventures, from playing basketball at American Fork High—where his team came heartbreakingly close to state championships—to spending carefree days exploring irrigation ditches
His entrepreneurial journey began 69 years ago as a side gig sharpening lawn mowers, eventually growing into the iconic Duff Shelley Mower and Cycle dealership . Starting humbly in a two-car garage behind his parents’ house, Shelley quickly expanded, building a larger shop next door and steadily adding onto it over the years
Shelley, who also served honorably in the Air Force during the Korean War and later pursued a basketball scholarship at Utah State University, has been an integral part of American Fork’s history . Although initially aiming to become a coach, Shelley found his true calling in entrepreneurship, acquiring a Kawasaki dealership in 1969—a franchise he proudly maintained for 55 years, making it one of the oldest in the nation
Alongside running his business, Shelley spent 32 years working at Geneva Steel, showing his remarkable dedication and work ethic . Even after relocating his residence to nearby Highland, he stayed deeply connected to his hometown, frequently expressing pride in his roots
“I’ve always loved American Fork,” Shelley reflects “It’s an incredible honor to serve as Grand Marshal I’ve known many people who have held this title and admired them greatly To be asked myself was genuinely surprising and humbling ”
Though he is nearly 97 years old, he worked at the dealership up until last month Today, his sons continue the family legacy, taking over the operation of Duff Shelley Mower and Cycle The recent sale of this historic dealership marks the end of an era but highlights Shelley’s enduring impact on the community .
Duff Shelley’s role as Grand Marshal celebrates a lifetime of dedication, community spirit, and optimism in the town he loves best
American Fork City is thriving, with a strong community, exciting growth, and a bright future ahead. See the highlights of how we are building this place we call home.

American Fork has truly been the honor of a lifetime.
I grew up in this town, watching the princesses and dreaming about becoming one of them . Seeing them at the carnival, receiving art show ribbons from them and catching a glimpse of their crowns at the parades made a world of difference for me .
Not only have I had the opportunity to be a real life princess, but I have seen how Our city is booming with individuals ready to help, no matter the circumstances At every service event, visit and moment I have had with the city, I have been in awe . You are what makes this city special . Wearing the name of our city across my heart for a year has meant everything to me .
This city truly is something special . Thank you to every member of the City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Miss American Fork committee and so many other individuals who have made my year magical Talking to you all and hearing your stories has made this year one that I will never forget
Being Miss American Fork is about more than a crown and sash It is about representing the people within the city, being a positive influence and using the platform for good . I feel incredibly grateful, humbled and honored to have been given the chance to forever join the legacy of American Fork .
To the next queen, I hope you take advantage of every opportunity you have to serve this city It truly is something special Don’t blink, or you might miss all the moments that are right in front of you . American Fork, thank you for giving me the chance to be your queen for a year I will cherish it forever .

Big changes are here at the American Fork Boat Harbor just in time for summer. The project includes parking lot and amenity improvements. Visitors who walk or ride their bike into this area will also have free access to the new outdoor amenities, seating, playground, and the beautiful view of Utah Lake!
Driving a vehicle into the facility costs $5 to park. Boat launch access is $10. Annual passes can also be purchased at the welcome booth for $75 for residents, and $125 for non-residents. Season passes are good for one year from date of purchase. American Fork City does not refund or prorate.
This $3.9 million project was funded primarily by boat harbor specific grants from Utah County and Utah Department of Natural Resources and Forestry Fire and State Lands. The upgrades include a new asphalt parking lot, restrooms, and a new welcome booth. Additional improvements include shoreline protection, vegetation cleanup, and improved fishing access.
“These upgrades have been years in the making—we’re excited to share them!”
-Mayor
Brad Frost
Utah Lake continues to shine as a natural treasure in our community, offering scenic views, diverse wildlife, and a growing list of recreational opportunities. Recent restoration efforts have helped restore
native life like the June Sucker and encouraged the return of native plants along the shoreline. With water ideal for paddling, beautiful sunsets, and peaceful fishing spots, it’s a perfect destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Families and visitors can also enjoy a new playground, added shade structures, and seating. Amenities such as trash cans, a large sitting wall, and a 12-foot-wide trail are also available. By mid July, even more features like beach sand, corn hole, a pergola, and extra benches will be added to complete the project.
We hope you enjoy the new changes at the American Fork Boat Harbor and enjoy visiting this summer! The harbor will be a hub for outdoor recreation, and we look forward to seeing residents enjoy boating, fishing, playing, and walking in the area.

The Steel Days Grand Parade will be on Saturday, July 19 at 9:00 a m The route will start at 300 W Main St and head east on Main Street to 100 E The parade will then turn left and head north to 300 N , then take a right on 300 N and head east until 600 E , where it will turn left and end at the high school

Please help us to do this by not allowing children to run into the road to collect candy Parade participants have been instructed to distribute candy near the sides of the road
As the parade concludes, please take pride in our community and keep it clean by collecting trash that is around you or that you see and depositing it into the trash receptacles that will be placed along the parade route Please remember Steel Days and the Grand Parade are meant to bring the community together and celebrate our great city Let’s have fun and be respectful to everyone around us including spectators, parade entries, and volunteers
AS AMERICAN FORK CONTINUES TO GROW, we have seen an increase in the number of people trying to reserve spots along the parade route . The committee respectfully requests that reservation of spots not take place until Friday, July 18 after 5:00 p m and that spectators be respectful of businesses, churches, residents, and others who own property along the parade route

Thanks to ongoing support from the PARC (Parks, Arts, Recreation & Culture) tax, American Fork continues to invest in community quality-of-life improvements. Since 2016, the PARC tax has funded $12.2 million in projects, with $1.5 million added in the current budget year. The PARC tax plays a vital role in supporting parks, arts, recreation, and cultural programs throughout the city. Many meaningful contributions, programs, and performances have been made possible this year through the PARC tax. Below are a few specific parks and recreation projects that have been completed in 2024 or are underway.
Kimberly Park Playground
The new playground at Kimberly Park is completed and currently in use! A swing set will be added in Fall 2025 to further enhance the space. $74,000 was contributed from PARC tax funds.
Mary and Art Dye Park Disc Golf Course
Significant tree removal and clearing were completed. This work was done by professional tree care companies, city staff during their annual service project, and dedicated volunteers from the Wasatch Disc Golf Club. Improvements include 20 new concrete tee boxes, 8 benches, 6 trash cans, safety nets, and new signage installed throughout the course. $18,000 was contributed from PARC tax funds.
Recent work includes significant tree trimming and clearing, planting many new trees, as well as the installation of a split rail fence. Additional improvements are planned as funding becomes available. $30,000 was contributed from PARC tax funds.
Arts and Culture
The PARC tax continues to support a thriving arts community in American Fork. Highlights include the Timpanogos Arts Foundation’s theater, choir, and instrumental programs and more. The Harrington Center for the Arts also hosts Fork Fest, Concerts in the Park, and the Living Bethlehem Christmas Market. Many other arts groups have also received funding making the arts more accessible and vibrant in in our city. $546,800 PARC tax funds in all went towards arts and culture programs last year.
Thank you to American Fork residents and businesses whose support for the PARC tax makes these projects possible. Your contributions continue to make a lasting impact on our parks, arts, recreation, and cultural projects in our city. This makes a difference in improving the quality of life for residents in American Fork.
