Turtle Slow TABLE TALK WITH DEE LYSAK Table Talk with Dee Lysak, a podcast that invites you, the listener, to the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods with miles and miles of shoreline, ancient rock, old-growth forests, crystal clear blue waters, and 14,522 Islands. This HOPE podcast conjures up the wilds of Northwestern Ontario and helps us examine how human culture interacts with our natural surroundings and the ways in which geography informs a people. Here we’ll explore the lighter side of life, the whimsy and the wonder. Let’s spend some unhurried hours sitting around a table, chatting and listening. Join me and together we’ll ignite the fire of curiosity. You can find this podcast on your favourite listening sites: Apple, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music. We will ship out new podcasts every 3 weeks, on a Tuesday. Here is an excerpt of what you might hear: Beans and cheese. That was close. I almost hit a turtle. I pulled over. Looked both ways and rushed to the centre of the highway. I picked up the small paint and helped it on its way. It was heading east… Road signs would be welcome. So, too would natural crossings, corridors from one place to the next, with an emphasis on safety first - for every wild animal. Other than humans, turtles have few predators and this in turn gives them an innocent energy.

With the very few knocking on its shell, the turtle symbolizes longevity in many cultures. So, too in cottage country, the turtle represents endurance, persistence, and the continuation of life. As the ice comes out and they wake from winter’s slumber, the turtle moves slowly but surely, with a steadfastness that rivals any in the animal kingdom: be it sloth or snail. You will find them ambling along quiet, stretches of dirt roads and sandy beaches – resting in sunny coves on fallen logs sitting atop rocky shorelines. The shell of the turtle. Ever constant. Never changing. Much like the make-up of the Canadian Shield that demarcates this region. Rocky Top and there you have it…the shell of the turtle. It’s home, sweet home. Do you hear the guitar strumming? It is faint but familiar. The sounds of Rocky Top are echoing from across the bay. The next time you happen along a turtle – I hope you hum along. Oh, and remember go slow. Turtle slow. PODCAST TEAM: Bill Stunden | Technical Producer Wanda Kabel | Podcast Collaborator Dee Lysak | Writer + Host on Mic Daniel Jordan | Music Recording
