THE JOURNEY TO THE TOP

Dryden Fall Fest began in 2020 with the simple mission to create free, local events that celebrate Dryden, promote tourism, and are accessible to everyone. The vision was clear: to transform Dryden’s outdoor green spaces into hubs of activity for the community to enjoy, offering experiences that showcase the best of fall in the area. Thanks to the dedication of the committee, countless volunteers, sponsors, and participants, Dryden Fall Fest has exceeded expectations year after year, quickly becoming a standout festival in the region.

The festival’s core philosophy is to ensure inclusivity and accessibility. This is reflected in its free-to-attend events that cater to all ages and abilities. The festival offers a range of activities that appeal to all interests, from history buffs and live entertainment enthusiasts to thrill-seekers and families with young children. But it’s not just about the residents; it’s about fostering tourism and drawing people from neighbouring towns and even further, making Dryden a hub for fall activities in Ontario.

A FESTIVAL THAT SUPPORTS LOCAL AND DRAWS VISITORS

One of the most remarkable things about Dryden Fall Fest is how it brings the community together while also contributing to the local economy. By attracting tourists from surrounding areas, the festival provides a boost to local businesses, hotels, and restaurants in a shoulder season. In 2024 alone Dryden Fall Fest had approximately 7,500 attendees across all events, with participants traveling from across Ontario and beyond.

Dryden Fall Fest is not just a celebration of the season; it’s a celebration of Dryden itself. The festival’s focus on outdoor green spaces, such as Laura Howe Marsh, the downtown core, and the Dryden Cemetery, highlights the town’s natural beauty, providing a perfect backdrop for all the events. With each passing year, the festival’s presence continues to expand, inspiring organizations in surrounding municipalities to start their own community events and collaborations.

2025 FALL FEST FLAGSHIP EVENTS

Spirit Walk

Oct 1 A dusk stroll through Dryden Cemetery, where participants hear captivating tales of past residents. The tour is approx an hour. Good shoes and a folding chair are encouraged if standing is difficult.

Harvest Hay Day

Oct 4 A lively street festival at the Laura Howe Marsh, showcasing over 50 local vendors and artisans and a stage with live entertainment. With activities like the ‘Treats & Trees’ children’s forest walk, pumpkin display, crafting station and food vendors, this event draws thousands of visitors every year.

We Run This City

Oct 5 Offering 5km/10km/half marathon races and a newly added kids costumed fun 1km run, the races begin at Van Horne Landing and encourage locals to get involved by decorating their yards on the race route and cheering on participants at the finish line.

LOOKING AHEAD: BUILDING ON SUCCESS

As Dryden Fall Fest continues to grow, it’s clear that the future holds even greater opportunities. The 2025 edition promises to be bigger and better with exciting enhancements. With plans to expand its offerings for families, increase the number of vendors and entertainment, and keep refining existing events, Dryden Fall Fest is poised to continue its success for years to come.

The recent recognition from Festival & Events Ontario as one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario is a well-deserved acknowledgment of the festival’s impact and dedication to its community. But for the organizers, volunteers, and participants, it’s not just about the award; it’s about bringing people together to celebrate the season, support local businesses, and foster a sense of community spirit in Dryden.

As Dryden Fall Fest enters its sixth year, it remains a shining example of how a small-town event can grow into something truly remarkable, bringing together the community and visitors alike to enjoy the best of fall in Ontario.

Oct 25 This family-friendly downtown event has become a community favourite, with local businesses and residents decorating their trunks and handing out treats to kids. With largerthan-life photo opportunities, food vendors, and over 50 highly competitive organizations participating in the decorating contest, this safe and festive trick-or-treating experience is not to be missed. Also happening simultaneously at the same location is the Dryden & District Haunted Museum!

Max The Moose

Born: July 19, 1962

Height: 5.6 Metres / 18 Feet

Weight: +/- 2 tons

Max the Moose has been proudly representing Dryden since his July 1962 arrival. He stands in honour of his ancestors, cousins and friends of the wilderness. Though not the largest Moose in Canada, Max is the oldest! This burly beast, with head raised, captures the spirit of Sunset Country. Be sure to stop by and get your photo with Max.

Suspension Bridge

Hold on tight as you walk, suspended, over the fast-moving water of the Wabigoon River. Located along the Dryden Signature Trail, the Roy Wilson Suspension Bridge is a unique feature of Dryden that offers unparallelled views of the Wabigoon River as it meanders through the heart of Dryden.

The Dryden Tree at Duke St Dock

The Duke Street Dock offers a prime spot to dock your boat and explore Dryden’s shops and restaurants just steps away. It boasts a scenic river view and is home to The Dryden Tree, a striking metal sculpture by George Marchiorello and Tom Stratton. Symbolizing Dryden’s forestry heritage, the tree stands on a granite base with bronze plaques detailing local history from 1670 to 1988. A time capsule, placed within the base by Dryden High School students, is set to be opened in 2088.

Birding

Dryden’s parks and trails offer incredible birdwatching year-round. In spring, the Laura Howe Marsh Trail teems with marsh and forest birds like ruby-crowned kinglets and great blue herons. Pronger Park is home to woodpeckers and warblers, while autumn hikers on the Sandy Beach to Flat Rock trail can spot migrating snow buntings, geese, and shorebirds. From September to October, Ghost Lake hosts over 150 common loons, Bonaparte gulls, grebes, and ducks. Check the Dryden Area Bird Watchers Facebook page for local sightings.

Merlin Bird ID

The free Merlin Bird ID app helps identify birds by sound, photo, or a few simple questions—even offline!

Hunting

Dryden is a prime base for your next hunting adventure. Whether you’re after moose, bear, deer, birds, or small game, there’s a spot for you in the surrounding wilderness. Book a guided or unguided experience with a local camp operator—and don’t miss the legendary “Dryden Buck” at the Museum. Be sure to call ahead of your visit to confirm he is not out on tour with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry staff.

Mountain Biking/Hiking

Dryden offers a range of well-maintained trails for mountain biking, hiking, and fat biking. With options for all skill levels, the area is ideal for both casual outdoor explorers and seasoned trail riders. In winter, many local trails are groomed for fat biking, making it easy to enjoy your favourite routes year-round. Whether you’re walking, biking, or snow riding, there’s a trail for every season.

Laura Howe Marsh

Discover the rich biodiversity of the Laura Howe Marsh, a restored wetland home to more wildlife than any other Ontario habitat. Thanks to community efforts and support from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the marsh now thrives as a haven for fish, amphibians, deer, birds, and more. Explore the short 0.4 km loop or the longer 2 km trail to take in its natural beauty year-round.

Boarding

Dryden is a popular destination for windsurfing and kite boarding in the summer and kite skiing/ kite boarding in the winter. There is a growing community of active skiers and boarders in Dryden who can often be found taking advantage of the conditions on Wabigoon Lake and Thunder Lake. Popular locations to access the lakes during the summer months are Flat Rock (Wabigoon Lake), Sandy Beach (Wabigoon Lake), and Johnson’s Beach (Thunder Lake). During the winter, you will find the kiting community accessing Wabigoon Lake right off of the ice road at Van Horne Landing.

SPORTFISH

Walleye Also called yellow pickerel or doré—is prized for its mild flavour and is a classic shore lunch favourite. With reflective eyes that help them hunt in low light, walleye are top predators known to feed on smaller fish and mayflies during a hatch.

A fantastic multi-species destination, Dryden is a fishing paradise for any angler. From bass to musky, walleye to crappie and northern pike to lake trout, our community is the centrepoint for your next fishing adventure. No matter what time of the year, opportunities to head out and fish are truly endless. Northern Pike Nicknamed jack, northern, or water wolf, pike are fierce ambush predators admired for their size and strength. They strike from cover and eat almost anything—fish, frogs, even ducklings. Though known for tricky “y” bones, their mild, flaky flesh is worth the effort to fillet.

Black Crappie Smaller than bass but equally popular for consumption. Found in large groups, they overwinter in depths of 20-40 feet and often suspend a few feet above the bottom. While they feed on small fish, their primary diet consists of aquatic invertebrates. Crappies are easy to catch but can be overfished.

Living amid the natural beauty of our rural and remote communities doesn’t shield us from political and economic challenges. Food insecurity has been growing across Canada, and our region feels it more acutely—with higher prices, limited variety, and few reliable local options.

“Conventional These days, it seems there may be even fewer choices as we check labels in an effort to consciously Buy Canadian.

How AgriTech North Began

AgriTech North launched in April 2022 as a yearround indoor vertical farm producing leafy greens, herbs, and microgreens. It remains the only yearround fresh produce manufacturer between North Bay and Calgary. CEO Benjamin Feagin Jr. and COO Fabian Velez frequently speak to the region’s unique challenges—underdeveloped infrastructure, short growing seasons, and a low, widely dispersed population—all of which complicate affordable access to fresh, diverse food.

Adapting to Community Needs

AgriTech North started with an online e-commerce model but quickly adapted when it became clear that most local shoppers prefer to buy in person. A small pickup counter grew into a thriving retail space, now offering not just fresh produce, but also regional and Indigenous goods: meats (beef, chicken, pork, bison), fresh-baked breads, eggs, cheeses, vegan and gluten-free items, and readyto-eat products. The wall of Post-it note requests reflects the community’s ongoing input.

“If we can find it, we bring it in” says Ben. “If one person is looking for a particular item, odds are good that others want it as well.”
