The State of New Jersey is home to 11 lighthouses that are open to the public, three of which are right here in Monmouth County. So whether you want to climb your way to the top for a panoramic view of the Atlantic or just make a gift shop pitstop, here’s what you need to know about these local historic sites—and why they’re worthy of a visit.

NAVESINK TWIN LIGHTS Wondering what that large brownstone is atop the Navesink Highlands? That would be the Navesink Twin Lights, which sits 250 feet above sea level overlooking Sandy Hook Bay. Originally built in 1828, the site became

known as “Twin Lights of Highlands” to seafarers who used its bright lights, one flashing and one fixed, to navigate their way into the New York Harbor.

The lighthouse that stands now was rebuilt in 1862 on the site of its original Navesink lighthouses, with its two non-identical towers linked together by keeper’s quarters and storage rooms.

It has served as a museum since it was decommissioned in 1949; check out the artifacts, tour the lighthouse and climb its North Tower to take in the exceptional Atlantic Ocean views.

SANDY HOOK LIGHTHOUSE Built in 1764, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse is one of the oldest buildings in New Jersey and, even more impressive, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. Its primary purpose was to guide vessels into New York Harbor (which could explain why it was first dubbed the New York Lighthouse), and it also housed British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. But the octagonal Sandy Hook Lighthouse, restored in 2000, has since become a popular tourist attraction in Monmouth County. The National Park Service offers free tours—hours and times change seasonally, so be sure to check before you go—and you can’t not climb to the top for a truly breathtaking panorama of the Atlantic Ocean, Sandy Hook Bay and the New York City skyline.

The Sea Girt Lighthouse was originally built in 1896 to bridge and illuminate the 40-mile gap between Barnegat and the Twin Lights of Navesink lighthouses. But this L-shaped Victorian building has done quite a bit else over its storied history. It helped defend the coastline in World War II, became the first land-based lighthouse in the country to get a radio fog beacon transmitter and, eventually, served for two decades as the town library and recreation center after its decommissioning.

In 1981, the lighthouse was in danger of being sold, so the nonprofit Sea Girt Lighthouse Citizens Committee stepped in. They purchased and restored the lighthouse and turned it into a museum and tourist center, where visitors can tour the grounds, walk through its unique keeper’s residence and climb 42 steps to the tower’s lantern room, an easy stroll when compared to most other lighthouses that have 200 plus.
