Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora koutou It’s hard to believe November is already here, bringing the promise of warmer days with it. As an American, November is always tied to the season of Thanksgiving for me as well - a time to reflect on the blessings in my life and express my gratitude with the people I love. One of the things I am so grateful for at this time of year is the fresh energy springtime brings and the excitement of adventures ahead. Recent extreme weather has reminded us about the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. As we begin to look ahead at the summer holidays, what better time to make sure your family’s emergency plan is in place? Agreeing on a plan with your loved ones, building and restocking your emergency kits, and familiarising yourself with community resources are all great ways to ensure you and your family remain safe and confident in case of an emergency. Following the weather events in October which left so many without power, I want to thank MainPower, Civil Defence and all its volunteers for their amazing response effort.

November is international Prevention of Violence Against Women month, with White Ribbon Day commemorated on the 25th. New Zealand is the worst developed country in the OECD for domestic violence, with our police responding to a family violence call about every 4 minutes. This month offers us an opportunity to educate ourselves about the epidemic of violence so many across our country experience daily and explore ways we can engage individually and together to continue creating a safer, stronger, more compassionate community for everyone. Participating in White Ribbon Day on 25 November is a great way to start. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller Noho ora mai

Community Profile

Cherry Burgess

Kia ora

My name is Cherry Burgess, I have recently joined Comcol North Canterbury as the new Youth Mentor for our GROW Programme. GROW involves a 12-week strengths-based training component, followed by intensive pastoral support to assist with the next steps towards education or employment for youth. I am eager to strive for the best outcome for young people who need some extra guidance and support, and help to empower them to be the best version of themselves. Youth who are wanting to engage within the community through voluntary services, becoming part of the workforce, or wishing to further their education. My role at Comcol is to assist and demonstrate opportunities for people between the ages of 15–24 years old, who are looking for a positive purpose in life. My background has been in the Ministry of Education for the last 12 years, working in the Primary School Sector. My passions lie deep with pastoral care needs, confidence and relationship building, along with trust and connection and the ability to reach a broad range of people. Often our youth just need an opportunity to give something a go, and it is my privilege to help with that. Guiding youth with a helping hand on their journey to find a prosperous future. Working in areas of selfbelief and confidence, with a purposeful

supportive outlook, and a can-do attitude, is our goal. Alongside with my husband bringing up our family of four children who are now all older. We enjoy a full household, settling in rural North Canterbury. I like nothing more than cooking up a storm in the kitchen, having our ever expanding family and friends filling up their puku’s with wholesome homegrown food around a table. Food and kindness is a great vehicle that brings people together. Our door is always open at home, and that is the same philosophy I carry forward at Comcol. I am looking to connect and network. Please feel free to reach out if you think we could be helpful to each other, in our similar roles of helping to make a difference, and adding value to benefit our strong community, working together for a brighter future.

Aimee Claassens

Kia ora koutou!

I am joining the Waimakariri District Council as a Community Development Facilitator in the Community Team. I will be assisting with capacity-building work in the volunteer space and working on the Welcoming Communities Plan for the district. This is an exciting project that aims to attract and retain migrants to the region.

My family immigrated from South Africa to Christchurch five years ago to explore the beautiful whenua. We spend most weekends out tramping, paddling and camping and have much more to explore. My family consists of Philip, my partner who is an environmental engineer and daughters Kate (13) and Hannah (9).

I have a background in transdisciplinary health research, but most recently I have been working at the University of Canterbury as the Outreach and Events Coordinator for the Faculty of Science. The role was great fun and a good way to learn about a country I was new to, but now I am excited to get back into the community development space.

My office hours are 8.30am–4.30pm, Monday to Friday. You can contact me on: aimee.claassens@wmk.govt.nz 03 311 8963

OUR MISSION Removing barriers, enabling participation and enhancing lives through our rugby values.

What is Tri Rugby? Tri Rugby enables people with disabilities or vulnerabilities to play with mainstream rugby players.

It allows people who are not able to be part of a mainstream rugby team to play a supported version of the game.

About us

Currently, we have two clubs, with players both male and female, aged between 12 to over 50. We practice throughout the season at Bob Deans Fields, North Hagley Park, HSOB RFC and Mandeville Sports Centre at Ohoka RFC, supported by members of both clubs, and will be adding on Prebbleton RFC next season

Our aim

To continue developing opportunities for our players and supporters to be a part of the game we love, as well as growing the Tri Rugby community, with development of new clubs and teams.

34 Our community evenings are over for the year but will resume in 2024. They have been well-supported with social gatherings after the presentation each night, as everyone catches up over a cup of tea.

Rangiora Museum The Museum is at 29 Good Street, behind the Rangiora Bowling Club and is well worth a visit. It is open Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30–4pm. You will enjoy a browse and a delve into our local history. A good Christmas gift is our just produced 2024 Calendar, with an interesting step back in time. Pick one up for $15 at the Museum.

Volunteers are always welcome, to assist with working on our records each Wednesday afternoon. This would be a good project, even for a short time, for young people. The record would look good on a CV! Have a look at the website - Rangiora and Districts Early Records Society Inc, phone 03 310 7356, or email rangioramuseum@xtra.co.nz Postal Address: 252 Kingsbury Avenue, Rangiora 7400. To arrange a visit by appointment, please contact Ann Jelfs, telephone: 03 313 7592.
