Greetings from the Editor

Last week the Community Team undertook planning for the coming year - a chance to consider priorities for the community, various sectors that support the needs and aspirations of local residents. With the recession has come increased demand on our local community and social services. This, unfortunately, has coincided with increased demand on funders and uncertainty around some service provision.

Our Council’s community development approach is incredibly valuable in this environment - bringing organisations together, so that community needs are collectively identified, brought to the attention of those who can help, and addressed well.

Pivotal to strong communities is ensuring that new initiatives, services, supports and groups are established with sound governance, good planning, appropriate marketing and sustainable resourcing to continue to operate effectively. ‘On Track’ is a capability-building series that was established by Council’s community development team in response to that.

Now in its sixth year of operation, this is a series of free workshops for local volunteerinvolving organisations, equipping them with the skills and information that they need to operate effectively. Workshops are delivered by experienced professionals and cover everything from navigating the new Charitable Trust Act, to strategic planning, financial management, managing volunteers and, for May, funding acquisition in a tight funding economy.

For more information, contact Aimee Claassens in the Community Team, by email at community@wmk.govt.nz

Serving and supporting our incredible community is a joy. We continue to be delighted by the willingness of our local organisations, businesses, groups and individuals to work together to make the Waimakariri a district where people are safe, cared for, included and empowered to thrive.

Tau kē – Well done!

Tessa

Mel Foster

Arts Strategy Facilitator

Kia ora, my name is Mel Foster and I have recently joined the Community Team as the Arts Strategy Facilitator. Thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome and making me feel at home!

Originally from Christchurch, my husband and I returned to New Zealand after living in Scotland and travelling. We have lived in Christchurch and North Canterbury and then in the beautiful small rural town of Lawrence in Otago for the last eight years. We moved back to Rangiora last year and are loving the new-look district which has changed so much in the last decade.

My background includes executive office, publishing, governance and event management. I have also spent some time on the other side of the table as an elected member which gave me a great insight into the intricate workings that lie behind local government.

Whilst in Otago I enjoyed leading and being part of various community projects.

I enjoy creative hobbies and am looking forward to further exploring the diverse arts in our community. In the weekends you can normally find me walking our two energetic dogs somewhere in our beautiful district, pottering in the garden or finishing the renovations on our house.

I am very much looking forward to becoming absorbed in the role as we aim to grow and strengthen our amazing arts sector through the implementation of the Ngā Toi o Waimakariri - Art Strategy.

Please feel free to contact me on Tuesdays 9am–4pm, Wednesdays 9am–4.30pm, Thursdays 9am–4pm at 027 255 3103 or email mel.foster@wmk.govt.nz

Supporting Young Parents to Succeed

My name is Whitney Misiuata, and I’m thrilled to be the newly appointed Kaiwhakahaere at Karanga Mai Young Parents’ College. Having grown up in North Canterbury, where I’ve lived since I was five years old, attending local primary schools and later Kaiapoi High School, it feels like a full circle moment to now be leading a kaupapa that is so deeply meaningful to me, and to be able to support young parents in their journey toward success.

From the moment I stepped into this role, I’ve been moved by the incredible potential of our community. Karanga Mai isn’t just a place to learn, it’s a transformative, empowering environment where young parents can step forward and focus on creating a brighter future for themselves and their whānau. Every day, I see firsthand how the collective effort of our passionate staff and our whānau-focused community helps young parents not only meet their educational goals but exceed them.

One of the standout features of Karanga Mai is the outstanding onsite Early Learning Centre, which provides a safe and nurturing space for pēpi while their parents focus on learning. We understand that being a parent and a student can be a delicate balancing act, and it’s our mission to offer a supportive environment that enables both parents and children to thrive. By providing quality childcare while our students work toward their qualifications, we’re helping

to lay the foundation for brighter futures for the whole family.

But Karanga Mai is much more than just education and childcare, we believe in fostering holistic development. We offer a wide range of exciting activities designed to engage and inspire our students. From surfing and kayaking to arts and crafts, there’s no shortage of opportunities for young parents to discover new passions, build confidence, and develop skills outside of the classroom. Whether it’s exploring the outdoors or unleashing creativity, we strive to offer experiences that allow our young parents to broaden their horizons and grow in ways that align with their personal interests and goals.

At Karanga Mai, we understand that each parent’s journey is unique, and we’re committed to helping them navigate it with support and encouragement every step of the way. We still have spots available for our 2025 cohort, and if you or someone you know could benefit from joining us, I encourage you to reach out. I’d love to kōrero and explore how we can work together to help you achieve your dreams. Karanga Mai is a place where every parent and child can grow, learn, and succeed together. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Highland Dancing: A

Tradition Steeped in History and Strength

Highland Dancing has been around for centuries — so long, in fact, that it predates written history! Originally, it wasn’t about performance but rather a way for Scottish warriors to prove their agility, strength, stamina, and precision. It was a test of battle readiness, and dancing also doubled as a form of exercise. The first recorded instance of Highland Dancing to bagpipes dates all the way back to 1265 at the second marriage of Alexander III in Jedburgh. However, in 1746, everything changed. The British government banned kilts and weapons, making traditional sword dances impossible and crushing many Scottish customs in the process. Even after the law was repealed, Highland culture didn’t immediately bounce back — it took years to rebuild. The real revival came during Queen Victoria’s reign. She fell in love with Scotland and its traditions, playing a major role in bringing back the Highland Games and, with them, Highland Dancing.

Interestingly, Highland Dancing was originally a male-only pursuit. That all changed in the early 20th century, particularly during World War I, when women took up the dances to keep the culture alive while the men were away. Fast forward to today, and the tables have completely turned — about 95% of competitors in Highland Dancing are now women!

Scottish Country Dancing: A Social and Spirited Tradition

While Highland Dancing is all about solo performance, Scottish Country Dancing is a wonderfully sociable experience. With roots in the grand assemblies and balls of the 18th and 19th centuries, it’s still going strong today, bringing people together through movement and music.

Dancers form sets — usually of three, four, or five couples — arranged either in two facing lines or in a square. Each dance is a mix of formations, with couples weaving in and out, switching positions, and working together to create something truly special. The variety means no two dances feel exactly the same, and there’s always something new to learn!

Scottish Country Dancing is pure joy— physically engaging, mentally stimulating, and, most of all, fun. Whether it’s a weekly class, a local dance, or a lively ceilidh, it’s a fantastic way to meet people and stay active.

So, if you’re looking for a hobby that’s social, energetic, and steeped in history, why not give Scottish Country Dancing a whirl? It’s affordable (all you need is a pair of dancing shoes!), partner-free, and endlessly rewarding.

We meet every Monday at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Hall, 176 King Street, Rangiora. Come along — you never know where your feet might take you!

Pegasus parkrun

A few changes have occurred within Pegasus parkrun during the first quarter of 2025.

First we began the year on New Year’s Day with 136 parkrunners and 13 volunteers taking part, we then followed that up with eight consecutive weeks of over 200 parkrunners.

The first two weeks of March, with its unsettled weather, have attracted 169 and 176 participants and on Saturday 15 March Pegasus will explode in a frenzy of old Irish folklore — there's even an expectation of a visit from a real life Leprechaun!

Personnel wise, as ever, parkrun is a community-based event, involving walkers, joggers and runners. The admin

and person power is all provided by volunteers, at Pegasus parkrun we have two co-Event Directors who see to the overall running of the Event. Our longest serving co-ED, Trudy Diggs, continues in her role but after almost four years in his co-ED role we say goodbye to Chris van der Leer, with many thanks. He is looking forward to being able to focus on his own parkrun goals. Returning for another stint is the original founder of Pegasus parkrun — Geoff McMillan.

Parkrun is free to all, it's weekly on a Saturday, it's timed and recorded and it's fun. We would love to see you down at Motu Quay, we have a First Timers welcome, then a quick briefing from the Run Director of the day and off we go at 8am. Why not come and join us?

Over the summer Pest Free Waimakariri ran a nature photo competition. We wanted to highlight the wonderful native wildlife of the district and the landscapes they live in.

We received some fabulous entries from which the judges have chosen our winners. It’s not an easy decision with so many good photos to choose from, so thank you to the judges and thank you to everyone who put in an entry - I hope you enjoyed the challenge. Congratulations to those in the top six and others who came close.

The winning Little egret photo was taken at the Ashley Rakahuri Estuary at Waikuku. If you watch these egrets you’ll notice they are very active feeders, always on the move. There are usually only a handful of these birds in New Zealand at any one time so we’ve been lucky to have one on the estuary. But we shouldn’t be surprised – this estuary is well known for its huge diversity of birdlife. Along with Stewart Island and Kaikoura it’s a gem of the south.

Thanks again to our supporters Cameo Fine Arts in Rangiora, Waimakariri

Biodiversity Trust, Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Waimakariri District Council, and Burton and Potton publishers.

The winners and runners-up are:

Caring Caller factsheet for potential clients

Sometimes living alone or being house bound means that we miss out on daily human contact, someone to chat to, laugh with and share news with. Everyone needs this sort of contact and the St John Caring Caller service provides just that.

The Caring Caller service aims to provide the opportunity of friendship and regular contact over the telephone. On agreed days, a friendly Caring Caller can telephone you to have a chat. This service is FREE and is part of the commitment that St John has made to support local communities by contributing towards the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

The benefits of Caring Caller - As a client it can provide a break from day to day activities, a newfound friend, regular contact, and knowledge that someone ‘out there’ is connecting and caring for your wellbeing.

People become clients for many different reasons. Sometimes their spouse has recently passed away, others have found that family members have moved away and they do not get regular contact with them anymore. Some clients stay with the service long term, several years in some cases, others may just need the service temporarily while family and/or friends are away

Anonymity - There is a high level of anonymity in this service. Caring Callers are only provided with your first name, sometimes age, telephone number, and a short personal profile of you. When the Caring Caller telephones you, it is the policy of the service that neither the Caller or the Client disclose their surname or address during their conversations. The Caller also does not disclose their telephone number.

What to do if you feel you could benefit from this service - You can contact us by phoning 0800 780 780. You will be put through to one of our Caring Caller teams.

They will need you to fill out an application form, or they can do this for you over the phone. This just gives us some information about you so we can best match you to a Caller. Once we have this information, we will find a suitable Caller and negotiate with you the best time for your Caller to ring you and on what days.

CAB has issued a new Spotlight report, Death and Dying

Our latest CAB Spotlight report, Death and Dying A CAB spotlight report into experiences and issues regarding death and dying from CAB client enquiries, is now available on the public website. This report highlights the common issues related to death and dying that clients come to the CAB about. It makes recommendations for changes which could help prevent some of the issues we are seeing. Some of the key recommendations include:

• Providing a publicly funded will and EPA service

• Adjusting small estate thresholds

• Creating a centralised will repository

• Ensure low-cost burial and cremation options

Pinc and Steel Cancer Group Exercise Classes

The PINC & STEEL Group Class programs are available in Rangiora and in Christchurch through Active Health. They are suitable for people affected by any type of cancer, during or after cancer treatment.

The classes are delivered by Active Health’s certified Oncology Physiotherapist Susan Larson and offer individualised exercise rehab for each person within the group. The classes are specifically designed to support people during or after cancer treatment. Each class accommodates all ages, fitness levels, and mobility. They offer a safe space to feel, share, and exercise within your limits and find solidarity with those who understand how it is. One term of classes (6 weeks) is funded for each participant by the Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation.

Rangiora group classes are held at Mainpower Stadium (289 Coldstream Road) on Tuesdays from 3.15pm-4pm. Christchurch group classes are held at Active Health (545 Manchester Street, St Albans) on Fridays from 11am-11.45am.

‘Next Steps’ classes are also offered in Christchurch on Mondays (12-1) and consist of 9-10 weeks of a gym style fitness exercise class with step aerobics, strengthening, yoga style stretching and relaxation. These classes are suitable for those who have completed their main cancer treatments and are great to build fitness, strength and confidence to transition into community-based fitness. One term of these classes is also funded by Pinc and Steel.
