LEGACY
The Legacy Society includes over 150 community-minded individuals committed to improving the quality of life and supporting the opportunities in our communities for future generations. Those who include the Community Foundation in a planned gift – bequest, life insurance or retirement assets – are invited to inform us of their plans and join The Legacy Society. Often, these meaningful gifts go unrecognized because they come at the end of a donor’s life. The Legacy Society is our way of acknowledging your commitment to the future—today. The legacy of a former Terre Haute resident will live on for generations thanks to an endowment fund established through a bequest. As with all gift types to the Community Foundation, a bequest allows individuals to choose which organizations will benefit in perpetuity. Often times, individuals will elect to benefit community organizations they supported throughout their lifetimes or causes close to their heart. June K. Swango and her husband, J. Morton Swango, traveled extensively to the East Coast for deep sea fishing and to the Western Plains and mountains. Mrs. Swango was fascinated with the American West and collected publications and Native American items from the Plains, Plateau and Southwest regions. When Mrs. Swango passed away in April of 2019, she left provisions in her will to create the J. Morton & June K. Swango Fund for the benefit of four local organizations. As she was an ardent supporter of natural history and a champion for the preservation of natural lands, the Fund will continue her legacy and provide annual support to the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department, TREES Inc., Vigo County Historical Society and Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department.

The Community Foundation recently made the first distributions from the
June Swango Fund – granting a total of $48,758 for the benefit of the four designated Vigo County organizations. "It is thanks to the foresight of community-minded individuals that allows us to continue to enrich lives in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties,” explained Beth Tevlin, Executive Director of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. “As charitable stewards for our community’s philanthropic endowments, we are grateful for Mrs. Swango’s generosity and look forward to honoring her intent in perpetuity.” If you wish to create a legacy beyond your lifetime in the form of a bequest, we encourage you to call us at 812.232.2234 or look on the back page for information on how to join The Legacy Society.
