LEGACY

THE POWER OF ENDOWMENT

A gift to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation is unlike any other gift. When you give to the Community Foundation, you invest in the future of your community. Your contribution is never spent; rather, it is invested as an endowment for generations to come.

An endowment is a unique way for individuals to leave a lasting legacy in the community they cherish. Whether created in the present or through careful estate planning, an endowment ensures that future generations will continue to benefit from the generosity and foresight of those who came before them. For good. For ever ®

An unrestricted endowment, commonly referred to as a community grant fund, plays an important role in our ability to make an impact in the Wabash Valley. When individuals give to a community grant fund, the possibilities are endless. Whether it’s supporting innovative projects, addressing urgent issues or assisting nonprofits in their missions, there is flexibility and power in unrestricted endowments. Since our formation, our local volunteers have granted over $30 million from the earnings on unrestricted endowments that are reinvested in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties into grants and projects. Unrestricted endowments ensure that the Original

funds entrusted to us can be strategically granted to make a difference in our communities.

Now, we have the opportunity to dramatically increase the amount of unrestricted dollars available each year. The Community Foundation has a challenge grant opportunity to raise matching unrestricted community grant dollars under Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VIII initiative. Through this match, Lilly Endowment will provide $2 for every $1 donated to any new or existing unrestricted community grant fund. Each resident has the opportunity to contribute to their community! To receive the full unrestricted match, the Community Foundation must raise $1,062,500 in Vigo County, $300,000 in Clay County and $262,500 in Sullivan County.

“Each grant cycle, we receive numerous requests to fund projects and programs in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties,” said Beth Tevlin, President & CEO of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. “Last year, we awarded over $580,000 in unrestricted grants, but there are still many that did not receive a grant because of insufficient funding. There is so much more we can do, and the only thing stopping community ideas from becoming a reality is the funding. This challenge grant opportunity is one way to invest now and provide funding each year into the future.”

A gift of $100 will automatically become $300; $1,000 instantly becomes $3,000; and a gift of $10,000 instantly becomes $30,000! Additionally, during this match, you can create a named family fund for only $1,700! Your gift will be matched, resulting in a $5,000 fund in your or your family’s name. Your gift will never be spent, and the earnings from this fund will be pooled with other unrestricted endowments to be granted for projects, programs and opportunities to make the Wabash Valley a better place to live, work and play.

“When I think of these unrestricted community grant funds, I think of the core word that I see – unity,” explained Diana Knox, affiliate board member and volunteer for Clay County. “Bringing people together. Through these unrestricted community grants, our community benefits from generous individuals or groups that have created these funds because it is pooled together to re-invest in the community, forever.”

“When we have more funds and can [grant] to larger projects, it inspires organizations to dream a little bigger,” echoed Ally Orwig, affiliate board chair and volunteer for Sullivan County. “These organizations are inspired to develop new projects or programs that they would not otherwise have the funding to implement thanks to the power of endowment. Our grants serve as the real, tangible benefits due to increased funding from unrestricted endowments.”

While the matching period ends on December 31, 2025, matching dollars are limited! If you are interested in taking advantage of the Lilly Endowment Inc. matching gift opportunity for your county, please contact the Community Foundation at 812-232-2234.

Unrestricted Community Grant funds allow the Community Foundation the discretion to make grants that meet needs and opportunities as they evolve and change over time. Your contributions can create a lasting impact and help address critical needs within our community, now and for generations to come!

You can establish a named community grant fund with…

A gift of $1,700, which will be matched by Lilly Endowment Inc., resulting in a new named fund benefitting your community.

A gift of appreciated stock.

A gift from your IRA if you are 70 ½ or older.

REMEMBERING BOB BROWN

JUNE

15, 1947 – JUNE 7, 2024

On June 7, our Wabash Valley Community Foundation Board Secretary, colleague and friend, Robert (Bob) Brown, passed away surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on July 15, 1947 and was raised in Farmersburg, Indiana. He attended Farmersburg Elementary, North Central High School and majored in math with a minor in physics at Indiana State University.

He travelled across the world from Indiana to Ohio to Michigan to Saudi Arabia for the development of his career and to support each community he was part of. Ultimately, he ended up in Terre Haute, where he became an influential part of the Wabash Valley.

THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, BOB MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WABASH VALLEY, EXCELLING AS A BUSINESS OWNER, GENEROUS PHILANTHROPIST AND DEDICATED COMMUNITY LEADER.

Those who were fortunate enough to know Bob, know how much he loved his family and his community. He dedicated much of his life to serving others, either through his work or his extensive community involvement. Bob joined the Community Foundation Board in 2015 and had served as its secretary since 2021. He was actively

involved in the Community Foundation’s Governance and Planning Committee for eight years and had served on the Investment Committee since 2019. In addition to being part of the Community Foundation Board for nearly ten years, he also served on the boards of the Terre Haute Symphony, Union Hospital Foundation, ISU Technology, Purdue Advisory Technology, Humane Society, YMCA, Camp Navigate, Village View School, Harvest Prayer Board and Indiana State Athletics.

Throughout his life, Bob made significant contributions to the Wabash Valley, excelling as a business owner, generous philanthropist and dedicated community leader. His extensive community involvement was a testament to his passion for the Wabash Valley community, and his legacy of service and leadership will be fondly remembered. Bob had such a profound, positive impact on the many lives he touched. He will be terribly missed, but we take comfort in knowing his generous spirit will continue on through his legacy of service to his beloved community.

Read and follow all instructions carefully. It is always important to follow instructions exactly. Failure to do so will disqualify your application. Provide no more, or no less, than what is requested.

year scholarships will be awarded to graduates of accredited high schools or residents of Clay, Sullivan or Vigo counties who will enter college for the first time in the fall of 2025.

and at least two weeks before the deadline. Be sure to choose people who can speak to your strengths, provide a meaningful recommendation and to whom you are NOT related.

Your essay matters!

Bear in mind that your essay, in most cases, is the single most important part of your application. Spend some time really thinking about this piece and write it yourself! This is your initial introduction to the scholarship committee and it can make - or break – your opportunity in the process.

Abandon your humility! Applying for scholarships is a highly

competitive process, so emphasize activities that show your talents and passions, especially things that demonstrate your ability to lead, take initiative, persist through adversity and care for your community. Your essay should reflect, in some manner, how/ why you have chosen your particular post-secondary area of study and career path.

The application opens on July 2 and will close promptly at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. If you have any questions regarding the scholarship application process, please contact Kelli or Tess via email at kelli@wvcf.org or tess@wvcf.org, or via telephone at 812-232-2234.
