At the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, we are deeply rooted in the community, working alongside residents, nonprofits and businesses to create lasting change. Our mission is to engage people, build resources and enrich lives by addressing our area’s unique needs and challenges. We empower individuals and organizations to thrive through thoughtful philanthropy, collaboration and grassroots engagement. Together, we cultivate a vibrant, inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to grow, prosper and succeed.
ROOTED IN THE COMMUNITY
As we look back on another year, we are reminded of the strong foundation that has helped the Wabash Valley Community Foundation grow and make a positive impact. The theme of this year’s report, “Rooted in Community,” highlights the deep connections we’ve built and the important work we continue to build upon. Together, we are not only fostering a healthy, educated and thriving community, but we are also improving the quality of life in ways that reflect the values and hopes of all who call this region home.
This year, we achieved an exciting milestone—surpassing $100 million in assets. This is a huge moment in our journey, but it’s not just about the number. It’s a reflection of the generosity and dedication of our donors, community partners and volunteers. Thanks to your continued support, we can continue building resources that address pressing challenges, support innovative opportunities and make lasting investments in our community’s future.
In addition to this financial growth, we are excited to share that we are in the midst of a unique challenge to strengthen our community’s ability to give. Through Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VIII $2-for-$1 challenge grant, your gift to an unrestricted community grant fund will be tripled, further building our resources to invest in the areas that matter most to our residents. We are eager to work alongside individuals and organizations who share our mission of engaging people, building resources and enriching lives.
This year, we also celebrated the success of several key community projects, made possible by the ongoing generosity of our donors. From scholarships that open doors for students, to grants that support local nonprofits, the Community Foundation remains committed to empowering individuals, strengthening organizations and fostering collaboration and inclusivity.
As we look ahead, we remain deeply rooted in our community and committed to making a lasting impact. With your continued support, we are confident that we will build on this momentum and achieve even greater results in the years to come.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for being an essential part of this remarkable journey. Together, we are creating a community where everyone can grow, thrive and succeed.
Lea Anne Crooks Chair, Wabash Valley Community Foundation Board of Directors
CULTIVATING COMMUNITY GROWTH
GIFT VIII MATCHING OPPORTUNITY WILL SIGNIFICANTLY BOOST GRANT DOLLARS IN CLAY, SULLIVAN AND VIGO COUNTIES
The current GIFT initiative offered by Lilly Endowment Inc. will have a meaningful and ongoing impact on Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties, especially as each county raises the maximum funds needed to meet its matching goal.
Under Gift VIII, the Endowment will provide $2 for every $1 donated to an unrestricted community grant fund. In total, this initiative would provide $3,250,000 to match $1,625,000 in donations resulting in a nearly $5 million increase in the permanent endowment funds for the three-county area.
This is an incredible opportunity for individuals to triple the impact of their gifts. Generally, every $1 million of unrestricted community grant funds provides $40,000 per year in grants to fund projects in the local community.
The breakdown by county demonstrates the annual impact this initiative will have on each county’s unrestricted community grant funds and the grants the funds will award:
CLAY COUNTY: Lilly Endowment Inc. will provide up to $600,000 to match $300,000 in donations for a total increase of $900,000. This would provide an additional $36,000 annually for grants in Clay County.
SULLIVAN COUNTY: Lilly Endowment Inc. will provide up to $525,000 to match $262,500 in donations for an increase of $787,500, which will provide an additional $31,500 annually for Sullivan County grants.
VIGO COUNTY: Lilly Endowment Inc. will provide $2,125,000 in matching dollars for $1,062,500 in donations which will result in a total increase of $3,187,500. These endowed funds will provide an additional $127,500 each year for various projects and programs in Vigo County.
All grants provided by unrestricted community grant funds are awarded through a competitive review process utilizing local volunteers with final approval by the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation. Through this matching challenge, donors at all levels can make a difference in their community. The power of an endowment is that these funds will provide a measurable impact by generating resources to address community needs and opportunities year after year.
Gifts may be made to a new or existing unrestricted community grant fund. Gifts of cash, stock, IRA rollovers and Qualified Charitable Distributions as well as other types of charitable gifts can be used to leverage the matching dollars. The $2-for-$1 match is available until December 31, 2025 or until all matching funds have been claimed, whichever comes first. SCAN THE QR CODE OR CALL 812-232-2234 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

EMPOWERING ADULTS WITH EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
In West Central Indiana, roughly 30,000 adults do not possess a high school diploma. The Goodwill Excel Center, a charter high school for adults, aims to reduce that number with its new West Central Indiana chapter, the 17th in the state.
The Goodwill Excel Center of West Central Indiana provides an incredible opportunity for individuals who did not finish high school to earn their diplomas and gain valuable life and career skills. Tuition-free, the Excel Center offers free supportive services, including transportation assistance, childcare and life coaching to remove barriers to education. The goal is for Excel Center graduates to not only earn a high school diploma but also gain a clear direction and a supportive network that will enable them to thrive. This will result in a robust talent pipeline that is workforce-ready and will benefit the entire region, driving economic growth and social progress.
In August, the Excel Center welcomed its first cohort to its temporary location in the lower levels of the Meadows in Terre Haute. Thanks to $35,000 in grants from the Community Foundation, the Excel Center was able to purchase desktop computers, software, desks, chairs, IT support and equipment, and provide funding for transportation to and from the Center.
Students work in the computer lab, thanks to a grant by the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS MONUMENT STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY ROOTS
A $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation has helped ensure that Frederick Douglass’ story will be told for everyone to see in downtown Terre Haute.
Douglass, a famous civil rights activist and abolitionist in the 1800s, is deeply rooted in the history of Terre Haute. He visited the city at least 10 times during his lifetime, gave several speeches in the community, helped raise money for Allen Chapel, and desegregated the Terre Haute House (now the Hilton Garden Inn) when he became the first Black man to stay there in 1872.
In spring 2024, the Douglass Project unveiled a monument created by local artist Bill Wolf to memorialize the civil rights advocate’s legacy. Local historian Dr. Crystal Reynolds led the effort, saying she believed it was important to recognize the connection between the historical figure and the city.
“There must’ve been something about Terre Haute that kept bringing Frederick Douglass back,” Reynolds said. “It’s about celebrating this amazing history of Terre Haute and sharing it with others. I love Terre Haute, we love Terre Haute and we want other people to see what we see.”
Community members and local students gather to unveil the monument.

2013 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar and Clay County Affiliate Board Member
Family is the primary reason I moved back to Clay County. Having that strong support network to navigate life’s challenges is invaluable. My career is another important factor. Being a sixth-generation farmer in Clay County is a source of great pride for me, reinforcing my deep connection to this land.
But beyond family and career, community is what truly grounds me. I chose to return to this area to make a positive impact. The community has played a pivotal role in shaping who I am, and I am committed to giving back and working to improve the area for future generations.

INNOVATIVE GRANT EMBEDS SOCIAL WORKER INTO THPD
The Community Foundation, in collaboration with Union Health Foundation and United Way of the Wabash Valley, launched an innovative three-year pilot program incorporating an embedded social worker into the Terre Haute Police Department (THPD). The program was developed to address the community’s changing needs, as recognized by THPD. A significant portion of the calls received by THPD are service calls involving officers as facilitators for mental health and welfare checks. THPD averages over 3,000 of these calls per year, with more than 500 being repeat location calls. These calls include welfare checks, suicide attempts, mental health crises, loitering, and overdoses.
Jarom Hawker, social worker with the Terre Haute Police Department, shared his experiences working with individuals in need of mental health services in the community during a mental health roundtable discussion.
Jarom Hawker joined the THPD in the summer of 2024 as its first social worker. He uses his proactive, communityminded approach to assist with the necessary resources and reduce the need for public safety service calls. In addition to supporting the community, Hawker provides the secondary benefit of helping public safety personnel as an additional resource to assist with the mental health needs of the officers.

RONDRELL MOORE, NEWS ANCHOR
2004 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar and Community Volunteer
Terre Haute is my hometown, and it is a place where I am deeply rooted in the community. My family, church, friends and so much more are all interconnected in the fabric of the Wabash Valley. I chose to intern at WTHI-TV, my favorite station growing up, and when they offered me a job at the end of my internship, it felt like the right next step.
Little did I know the wealth of knowledge, experience and fellowship I would gain once I joined their team. This community has provided me with nearly everything I could ask for, and I’m proud to give back to a place that has been so instrumental in shaping who I am today.
THERAPY DOGS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
The Clay Community Schools’ Therapy Dog Program was established to promote positive mental health outcomes and cultivate a supportive learning environment for both students and teachers. Specifically designed to complement existing services, the program addresses the need for additional resources beyond the mental health counseling provided by the Hamilton Center and the school’s guidance counselors. The program creates a welcoming and caring atmosphere by promoting inclusivity, nurturing relationships, and enhancing emotional well-being.
The Community Foundation granted $10,000 to the Clay Community School Corporation to support the acquisition of two therapy dogs, later named Wally and Dolly.

Members of the co-working space can book the Commissary Kitchen, which includes a six-burner stove, grill, ovens, and multiple refrigerators, to help launch their businesses. The goal is to assist budding food entrepreneurs who may not be able to invest in the equipment on their own, offer access to mentorship, and foster relationships with other business owners.
Shannon Hart, founder of Anna’s Hands Soul Food, utilized the kitchen to help grow her business. Before establishing her location at 12 Points, Hart hosted several classes at The Station in its demonstration kitchen, adjacent to the commissary kitchen. She also hosted wedding tastings and filmed a cooking show for social media.
Anna’s Hands Soul Food owner, Shannon Hart, utilized The Kitchen to prep for her cooking class.

TAYLOR THRASHER, SPEECH PATHOLOGIST
2004 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar and Community Volunteer
I was born and raised in Sullivan County, where the unwavering support of a close-knit family surrounded me. No matter the challenge, we were always there for each other. Growing up in a small town, my community became an extension of my family, offering a sense of belonging and connection.
Over the years, I underwent more than 30 eye surgeries, and through it all, I knew I could rely on both my family and the incredible people of my community.
While many high schoolers dream of leaving for college and starting fresh in a bigger city, I never felt that pull. My roots in Sullivan County ran deep, and I couldn’t wait to return home. I attended Indiana State University, where I pursued a degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
Throughout my studies, I remained committed to returning to Sullivan County to live and work. For me, it was essential to give back to the community that helped shape who I am today.

MCMAHAN HONORS HER HUSBAND’S LEGACY AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO SULLIVAN COUNTY
After the passing of her husband, Don, in 2024—just shy of 56 years of marriage—Jean McMahan chose to honor his memory by establishing a lasting, unrestricted endowment fund. The Don and Jean McMahan Fund, held through the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and its Sullivan County affiliate, serves as a tribute to Don’s legacy.
“Rather than sending flowers that would eventually fade, the fund offered a meaningful way for our friends—both his and mine—to express their love and respect, while also benefiting our community for generations,” McMahan explained.
When McMahan learned about Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VIII initiative, she recognized it as the perfect opportunity to make a significant impact. Through the initiative, Lilly Endowment will contribute $2 for every $1 donated to unrestricted endowment funds, effectively tripling the impact of each contribution.
“This generous program means that your gift goes so much further, providing a permanent source of funding for grants that will address the community’s needs on an ongoing basis,” she said. “It’s an incredible opportunity for our community to benefit long into the future.”
Rather than sending flowers that would eventually fade, the fund offered a meaningful way for our friends—both his and mine—to express their love and respect, while also benefiting our community for generations.
Indiana’s community foundations have long played an important role in strengthening the state, with one in every county. The Wabash Valley Community Foundation serves Vigo, Clay and Sullivan counties. McMahan highlighted several impactful local projects supported by the Community Foundation, including a $50,000 grant for the Lily Pad Project at the new pool, improvements to the steps at Merom Bluff and a grant to help the Carlisle Ambulance Service purchase new lifts to enhance safety for first responders. Additionally, funding has been allocated to local Boy Scout troops, Beta Clubs and other high school organizations.
A longtime community leader and volunteer, McMahan has served on both the Wabash Valley Community Foundation board and the Sullivan County affiliate board.
“I became involved with the Community Foundation because I saw how deeply it supports the entire county of Sullivan. The board’s unwavering commitment to our community’s well-being truly resonated with me, and I wanted to play a role in that,”
McMahan shared. “In memory of my late husband, I decided to direct some of our financial resources into establishing this endowment. It felt like the right way to ensure that his legacy of giving back to the county would live on—not just for today, but for generations to come.”
Through the creation of the Don and Jean McMahan Fund, Jean has secured a permanent tribute to their shared commitment to Sullivan County, ensuring that their support will continue in perpetuity.

PASSION FOR IMPROVING COMMUNITY
LEADS TO A LIFETIME OF SERVICE AND PHILANTHROPY
Gary and Judy Schomer, a local couple committed to addressing the needs of the Wabash Valley, made a generous donation to supplement a family endowment fund they established several years ago. Their gift was tripled through Lilly Endowment Inc.’s $2-for-$1 match.
“God blessed us with the opportunity (and obligation) to share,” explained Gary. “We were raised to quietly share our blessings with others. We have many great organizations working to help our community with current needs. While we will continue to share in those efforts, we wanted to build this fund because it is geared to helping forever,” he added.
“The Community Foundation has been successful in funding various opportunities for improvement in the Wabash Valley, and it is organized to help fund our community’s needs and improvements forever. That is exactly our goal.”
Both Terre Haute natives, the couple shares a passion for their community, having decided years ago to remain here to raise their family.
“Judy and I both love Terre Haute, and this is where our family lived. We grew up here and wanted to stay here. Terre Haute is a friendly place, and our citizens are always willing to help each other. I have participated in many community improvement activities, and people are eager to help,” Gary said.
We were raised to quietly share our blessings with others. We have many great organizations working to help our community with current needs.
Having volunteered with the Community Foundation, Gary understands the impact that endowment funds can have, as the original principal remains invested while the proceeds are used for grants.
“This is our active project, and we are excited to move from a Charitable Remainder Trust to actually funding the opportunities for improvement. As stated earlier, I have done a lot of work with the Community Foundation, and its goals match perfectly with our own. The Community Foundation is also well-managed and applies its funds for improvement very effectively,” he said.

REMEMBERING ANN HICKS, A WOMAN OF PHILANTHROPY
Past Legacy Society Member Mary Ann Hicks loved to travel, golf, read, and give back to her community. Before her passing on December 16, 2020, she worked with the Community Foundation to create three endowments: The Cyril W. and Mary H. Hicks Memorial Fund for Forest Park, The Mary Ann Hicks Fund for Forest Park Golf Course, and The Cyril W. and Mary H. Hicks Scholarship Fund.
A Clay County native, Hicks had a deep love for travel and the outdoors. “Every trip she took, she loved,” said Hicks’ friend, Les Miller. Her travels helped inspire her creation of The Cyril W. and Mary H. Hicks Memorial Fund for Forest Park. The City of Brazil Parks and Recreation Board developed a five-year plan for their community parks, and The Cyril W. and Mary H. Hicks Memorial Fund for Forest Park has helped support those plans. The first goal of the five-year plan, a splash pad, has come to fruition, but there are other aspirations. The Board plans to create a trail around Forest Park to expand the walking track, as well as enclose the pavilion at the park, commonly known as the “cow palace,” so it can be used year-round in greater comfort.
In her retirement, Ann Hicks discovered a passion for golf. “[Hicks] lived around the corner from us,” said Troy Farris, the Club Pro at Forest Park Golf Course. “She helped with our junior clinic and was adamant about improving her own game.” The Mary Ann Hicks Fund for Forest Park Golf Course will help maintain the course for generations to come. “It’s a blessing,” Farris said. “It really is.”
Her house was filled with mementos and photos from her trips, keeping travel logs and diaries so she would be reminded of where she had been.
Hicks graduated from Stephens College in Missouri and worked briefly in Washington, D.C., before returning to work at Bemis in Terre Haute until she retired. She also loved to read and was a member of a book club at her local library. Her education and love for reading sparked her interest in giving others the opportunity to learn. This interest led to the creation of The Cyril W. and Mary H. Hicks Scholarship Fund, which supports a Northview High School graduate in their pursuit of a college education. “It opens up doors and opportunities that they may never have thought possible,” said Deb Zimmerman, Assistant Principal at Northview. “It may mean moving on to a college education when that may not have been an option, or opening the door to their ‘dream college.’”
Ann Hicks upheld the values of the Community Foundation by creating funds she was passionate about. Individuals are able to customize a charitable endowment fund to fulfill their personal charitable desires. The Community Foundation works with each person to help them identify which charities are important to them, and Ann was a perfect example. She created three separate funds to support the causes she believed in, thereby creating a legacy of a stronger, better tomorrow—one that nurtures potential.

MEROM CAMP AND RETREAT CENTER
Since 1858, Merom Camp and Retreat Center, Inc. has been a staple of Merom, Indiana. This facility has provided people of all ages with opportunities to enrich their lives spiritually, connect with nature and engage in fellowship through retreats, summer camps, reunions and more. Merom Camp and Retreat was one of three organizations nominated during the first 100 Women Who Care Sullivan County meeting of 2023. Members learned that the historical landmark required immediate financial assistance and voted the organization as their first-quarter winner. In 2024, Merom Camp and Retreat Center welcomed the group back to celebrate its accomplishments and for the grand re-opening of the Ruth House.
