Since its foundation over a century ago, VU Amsterdam has been committed to scientific and valuedriven education, research and knowledge transfer. A unique and multidisciplinary university, VU Amsterdam is dedicated to building a better world for people and the planet. Three priority areas underpin our actions: sustainability, entrepreneurship and diversity.
At VU Amsterdam, we are passionate about working on sustainable solutions to the interconnected challenges of this century. We educate the leaders of tomorrow, research sustainability from multidisciplinary perspectives, and create value for society while taking responsibility for our own organisation. In addition to a Dean of Sustainability, we have the student-led Green Office and a Sustainability Office with small impact teams, also known as 'Green Ambassadors,' who work towards making our campus and operations more sustainable.
We believe in fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among our students that will ultimately create added value for society. VU Amsterdam offers a wide range of entrepreneurship education and support. On campus, you will find the VU StartHub, a pavilion for (student) entrepreneurship, impact and innovation, as well as several initiatives that give students and researchers the opportunity to test ideas and work on their entrepreneurial dreams on campus.

We celebrate differences in culture, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion and socioeconomic background. And we are firm believers that diversity fosters creativity, empathy and understanding, which are vital skills for our students to succeed in a globalised world. A range of initiatives to support diversity are offered, including student organisations and cultural events.

Joining an association is a great way to meet new people, engage in shared interests and participate in social events, sports and cultural activities. There is an abundance of associations to choose from, such as social associations, (faculty) study associations, sports associations and associations with a specific focus, such as creative or cultural associations.
When in Amsterdam, it is easy to hop on the bike or the train and explore new terrain. For example, bike to the lush Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam forest) for a picnic, take the train to Den Haag for a day at the beach or visit charming Utrecht! The Netherlands has something for everyone. You can also venture outside the country, as the Netherlands' central location in Europe makes it easy for students to travel to nearby countries and explore different cultures, languages and landscapes during weekends and holidays.
Living in a new country is the perfect opportunity to learn a new language. At VU Amsterdam, you can benefit from the discounted language courses available to enhance your Dutch proficiency. Not only will this facilitate your cultural integration, but you will feel more at home in your new surroundings.
Amsterdam is rich in cultural heritage, as is evident from its iconic architecture and renowned museums. Within the city, you will find treasures like the national Rijksmuseum, contemporary art exhibits at the Stedelijk Museum and the masterpieces of Van Gogh at the eponymous museum (locate them on the map on the right). There is also an abundance of festivals and concerts on offer! This vibrant cultural scene is not only found in Amsterdam but extends throughout the whole country.

Are you excited about many different topics? At AUC you can combine multiple fields of study into one programme! Combining multiple perspectives is not only fun but also important. Think about climate change, public health or AI. These and other ‘big questions’ in science and society are extremely complex. Learn how to apply different perspectives in order to find valuable solutions. At AUC you will study a core curriculum to sharpen your thinking, writing and argumentation skills and shape your own programme by choosing one major (sciences, social sciences or humanities) and 2/3rd of your courses. Make your vision a reality!
You will be a student at both the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and University of Amsterdam, meaning you will have access to their services and courses. Most of your courses will take place at Amsterdam University College. You'll be part of the tight AUC student community, living together with your classmates in the student residences for all three years.
You will be qualified to apply for diverse Master’s programmes at VU Amsterdam or other Dutch universities and prestigious institutions around the globe. The field of study for which you apply will typically correspond to the tracks or areas in which you completed most of your coursework at AUC.

The most common fields where AUC alumni go on to find employment included research, education, advising, management, marketing, health sector, data science, the IT sector, business, finance and civil service. The exact jobs and career paths that AUC students follow tend to be as diverse as the students and personal study plans that they create.

PPE is an exceptional interdisciplinary Bachelor's programme that directly applies the fields of Philosophy, Political Science and Economic to tackle important societal questions. With a low student-to-teacher ratio and a high number of contact hours, PPE offers a personalised learning experience. The programme is housed within the John Stuart Mill College, which boasts its own state-of-the-art facilities located within the main building of VU Amsterdam. PPE has a truly international orientation: the majority of PPE students comes from abroad, and all students possess an international outlook on life.
In the PPE programme, teaching is divided equally between lectures and seminars to provide students with the chance to delve deeper into the material in small groups of no more than 20 students. During the first year, foundational courses are taken in the three main disciplines. From the second year onwards, students get to choose two out of the three disciplines to further deepen their knowledge.
After completing the PPE programme, most graduates go on to pursue a Master’s degree in one of the three core disciplines (Philosophy, Political Science or Economics) or in a related field.
Equipped with a broad range of skills and knowledge, PPE graduates are well-prepared for diverse roles in society, including policy advisers, think tank consultants, analysts, academics and executives in corporate or non-profit organisations. The programme also offers ample opportunities for students to network with potential employers during their studies.
To be eligible for admission, you must have a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Dutch VWO level, such as an IB Diploma or Abitur. Additionally, you must demonstrate proficiency in Mathematics and English. Admission to this selective programme is based on your grade point average, motivation, and suitability for the programme. For further information, please visit our website.
"In a world of growing complexities, understanding global issues requires more than just one perspective. The PPE programme has offered me an interdisciplinary approach – combining Philosophy, Politics and Economics – while also fostering cultural sensitivity through a diverse and multicultural classroom using English as our shared language to discuss ideas and perspectives. On the 4th floor (where our college is located), we examine real-life challenges from multiple angles, allowing for a nuanced understanding of possible solutions. This approach will undoubtedly prove invaluable in our future efforts to shape better policies and create a better world."

Academic education provided by the faculty is linked to current societal themes, united in the motto: Law in Action! Next to several Dutch-taught programmes, the Faculty of Law offers the unique English-taught programme Law in Society. The teaching we provide in this Bachelor’s is based on the idea that our society needs academically trained lawyers who combine expert knowledge of the law with an understanding of the societal context in which law operates. Within the Law in Society Bachelor’s programme you will examine complex societal questions from a range of legal perspectives.
Instead of the traditional approach to public, private and criminal law, our Law in Society Bachelor’s programme starts with real societal problems and looks at how different legal perspectives can be applied. Using a multidisciplinary approach with a strong social sciences component and a cross-cultural emphasis, you’ll work in groups to carry out empirical research on real-world cases.
After completing the Law in Society programme, you receive a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) will set you up perfectly for a Master’s programme with a similar multidisciplinary international approach. As a graduate, you are well suited for roles involving international issues, for example working on sustainability in the Port of Rotterdam, or on human rights at an international law firm.
Law in Society is a selective programme. This means that, besides the general admission requirements, your application will also be assessed by an Admission Board. The Admission Board will determine if you’re a good fit for the programme, based on (amongst other things) your motivation for studying Law in Society, as well as for participating in a mixed classroom.
Law in Society
“I started studying Law in Society because it focuses on real-world impact. Over time, I came to appreciate how the programme encourages us to look at law through different cultural and social lenses. VU Amsterdam offers so much more than academics: the engaging events and especially the diverse student community create an environment where everyone can feel inspired and included. Being surrounded by people from different countries, backgrounds and perspectives has shaped how I think, learn and connect with others. I’ve found room to grow not just as a student, but as a person who wants to make a difference. This programme is more than just studying law; it’s about understanding and shaping the world we live in.”
Bence Halmos Hungary Law in Society
VU Amsterdam aims to provide an open environment to students with backgrounds that vary in many different dimensions, such as religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, and socioeconomic status. Our mixed classroom is an educational approach that builds upon differences to enrich the learning experience for all students present. The term mixed classroom is not used in a descriptive way (in reference to a classroom with a certain level of ‘diversity’), but is the name of our educational model, in which students learn how to open up to differences, to co-create an inclusive environment and to capitalise on different perspectives in order to create value. This does not entail compromising between different perspectives or merging them into one uniform perspective. Instead, it uses the differences and possible tension between perspectives to stimulate critical thinking, develop analytical skills, and generate creative solutions.
VU Amsterdam considers it important that academic, personal and social education of students has a place in the curriculum. Together, students and teachers shaped the development of the education programme ‘A Broader
Mind’, in which Bachelor’s students work on social questions and self-development. Students learn how to solve societal problems, combining multiple scientific disciplines. The themes of the programme are based on the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Another part of A Broader Mind is strengthening the educational form of Community Service Learning (CSL) at VU Amsterdam.
With CSL, students apply their academic skills in solving current and social issues. In the future, VU Amsterdam wants all students to have the opportunity to do Community Service Learning. Through structured pilots, scientific research and a learning community, VU Amsterdam further supports the development of CSL.
Teaching entrepreneurial skills is a distinguishing feature of VU Amsterdam's teaching programmes. Our university is home to various initiatives such as the Centre for Entrepreneurship, which provides free support to students interested in entrepreneurship. Another initiative, the Starthub, serves as a pavilion for 25 startups, and the Demonstrator Lab empowers students and researchers to test ideas for feasibility and launch businesses on campus.
Enactus VU is another prime example, operating within the larger Enactus network and spearheaded by students. By identifying societal opportunities and collaborating with academics and industry professionals, they initiate projects that evolve into self-sustaining companies. Through these initiatives, we actively contribute to fostering a more sustainable world and nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset.
The Master’s programme Entrepreneurship aims to provide students with cutting-edge knowledge on entrepreneurship, relevant skills, and an entrepreneurial attitude. In addition, the students will be able to bridge theory and practice by applying and creating relevant academic knowledge on entrepreneurship in real life settings to solve challenging problems.
The quality of Dutch higher education is amongst the best in the world. Education at VU Amsterdam is structured according to the Bachelor’s and Master’s system. In general, the teaching style can be described as student-centred; we stimulate students to develop their own opinion through independent and creative thinking. This means that teaching is conducted in small seminars where interaction is the norm rather than the exception. At VU Amsterdam students are encouraged to engage with their professors in a discussion.
The academic year starts in the first week of September and is divided into two semesters. At VU Amsterdam, each semester consists of three periods of 8+8+4 weeks. Examinations are held at the end of each semester (January and June), or at the end of the eight- or four-week period. You are registered as a student from 1 September until 31 August.
At VU Amsterdam, credits are listed according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The ECTS credit system is based on study workload, which includes contact hours, time spent completing papers, assignments and preparing for examinations. In this system, 1 ECTS credit point represents 28 hours of study (including class attendance).
A full-time student is expected to earn 60 ECTS credits in one academic year, and 30 ECTS credits in one semester.
When you come to the Netherlands to study you will probably expect that many things are different than in your home country. The grading system may also not be the same as what you are used to. In the Netherlands, the traditional grading scale is from 1 through to 10, where 1 is the lowest and 10 the highest grade. A grade of 6.0 or more stands for ‘pass’, a grade of less than 6.0 for ‘fail’. Grades 1 through to 4 are very rarely given, and the same is true for grades 9 and 10.
Grading practice in the Netherlands can differ from how grades are awarded in other countries. When the 1 through to 10 scale was officially introduced back in the late 19th century, it was decided that a 10 should only be awarded in cases of absolute perfection. A 9 was considered to be only a slightly less impossible goal to reach. With the advent of multiple choice testing and yes/no answers to questions, 10’s and 9’s actually came within reach of ambitious students. To this day, however, these grades are still very rarely awarded in oral examinations or open question testing, such as essays, presentations, project reports or dissertations.
Capitalising on differences does not entail compromising between different perspectives or merging them into one uniform perspective. Instead, it uses the differences and possible tension between perspectives to stimulate critical thinking, develop analytical skills, and generate creative solutions.

The tuition fees for most programmes are determined by the Dutch government on an annual basis. Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students vary depending on the programme. Please refer to vu.nl/tuitionfee for the tuition fees applicable to the 2026-2027 academic year.
If you are applying for an English-taught Bachelor’s programme you are asked to pay a non-refundable €100 application fee. Only after you have paid this fee will we be able to start the assessment of your application file.
Students from a non-EU/EEA country who require a Dutch residence permit for study will have to apply for one through VU Amsterdam. The cost for applying for a visa and/or residence permit is €275. You can only start the immigration procedure once you've paid this fee.
For international Bachelor's students, scholarship options are limited. However, Dutch higher education is subsidised and tuition fees are relatively low. Study in NL offers an overview of all scholarships and grants available to international students. See www.studyinnl.org/finances
€ 1,000 to 2,000
Some students manage to spend less, but this of course depends on your own lifestyle. Below is an example of potential costs (not including tuition fees):
Accommodation
Groceries
Public transport (optional)
Insurance
Books and printing
Other costs: clothing etc.
€485 - €1,400 p/m
€150 - €400 p/m
€40 - €100 p/m
€134 - €158 p/m
€53 p/m
€100 p/m
Additional costs may include the yearly municipal taxes such as the waste collection tax. Whether you will need to pay these taxes or not will depend on the property you are renting.
When you are from a non-EU/EEA country you must prove that you are able to finance the costs of living in the Netherlands, as part of your immigration procedure. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) determines the amount per month/year. For 2026-2027 you need to be able to prove that you have at least the minimum specified amount per month at your disposal for the total duration of your study programme enrolment. Additionally, you also need to prove that you can pay your tuition fees. Please check vu.nl/visa for more information.
Once you have completed your Bachelor’s degree, a broad range of Master’s programmes is available to you. VU Amsterdam offers more than 150 Master’s programmes in English. More information can be found online at vu.nl/internationalmasters
VU Amsterdam offers an Honours programme for excellent students. During your Bachelor’s degree, it is possible to go on exchange to take courses at a partner university. Spending a semester abroad is a guaranteed boost for your career and personal development. You will be part of another culture, create an international network and improve your language skills. It is a unique academic challenge during which you will live and study in an international environment.
The most suitable period for an exchange is the first semester of your third Bachelor’s year, because most study programmes have no compulsory courses in this period. We have exchange agreements with over 200 universities around the world. You could be one of the students spending a semester at one of our partner universities in Europe, the USA, Canada, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Asia or Latin America.
Take a look at the VU Study Abroad Map, select your (future) studies and discover your possibilities.

VU Amsterdam wants to offer an attractive study and working environment that responds to the modern demands that students and employees have. Our campus is a dynamic, urban environment in direct connection with business district ‘Zuidas Amsterdam’. This brings new opportunities for cooperation with alliances and our surroundings.
To safeguard the wellbeing and safety of its students, VU Amsterdam offers many support services addressing wellbeing on an academic or a personal level. One of them is the Student Wellbeing Point, an initiative for students by students. In the informal and relaxed space in the VU main building, trained VU students offer their fellow students a listening ear, a safe space to take a breather with a cup of tea or advice on where to find the right VU support services.
Proximity to Schiphol International Airport and train connections within Europe make VU Amsterdam easily accessible to the world. Amsterdam has a wide variety of buses, trams and subways to get you where you need to be. But if you truly want to experience life as an Amsterdam resident, buy a bike! Amsterdam has more bikes than people, and you will learn that Dutch people cycle everywhere within the city, no matter the distance or weather.
Counting 3,400 residents, Campus Uilenstede is the largest student campus of Northern Europe. Uilenstede is home to quite a few of our international students. Of course, aside from living and studying there, there’s a lot more to do for the students of the Campus, such as a cosy diner and regular events. Read more about student housing on the next few pages.
Griffioen is the cultural centre of VU Amsterdam. In addition to courses, Griffioen organises film screenings, music, theatre and dance performances. The VU Amsterdam Orchestra is the student orchestra of VU Amsterdam and was founded in 1962. The students mainly perform late-romantic and twentieth century music in the most beautiful halls at home and abroad. The newest contribution to cultural life on the VU campus is Rialto, a brand new theater with four state-of-the-art screening rooms where people can enjoy films, specials and festivals.
Study associations are attached to a particular faculty, programme or course. The emphasis is on social events and relaxation, although most also organise activities which are relevant to the coursework itself. Having joined an association, you may wish to take a hand in running it by sitting on one of its (sub-) committees. You can then help to organise excursions or to produce the association's magazine for example.
The VU campus offers plenty of sports opportunities. The campus square features a basketball court, a beach volleyball court, a calisthenics area with fitness equipment and several table tennis tables. For those looking for more variety, the VU Sports Centre offers something for everyone, from fitness to yoga and from futsal to boxing, with two locations across campus. Both students and staff can enjoy the facilities at competitive rates. Each year, a dedicated group of students competes in the Race of the Classics, Europe's largest student sailing race, while a big team also represents VU Amsterdam during the internationally renowned 'Dam tot Dam' running competition.
From the first cup of coffee in the morning to a delicious hot meal at the end of the day: the campus has a wide variety of cafés and restaurants to satisfy any craving. More and more shops are opening up on our Campus square, i.e. VU Amsterdam bookshop, SPAR University supermarket, Doppio Espresso, Science Café (O|2 Lab building), Grand Café Living and several food trucks.
The University Library is your go-to place for study, research and inspiration. Located in the VU Main Building, it offers quiet and collaborative study spaces, access to digital and print resources, 3D printing, VR tools and expert support.
Studying at VU Amsterdam and living in Amsterdam is a great experience, but finding a room can be a challenge. The university can help you with this.
The International Office offers accommodation to participants in English-taught degree programmes. There are mainly furnished rooms with private or shared facilities. The number of rooms available is limited so we cannot guarantee accommodation for every student.
The university’s types of accommodation are located in various areas of the Amsterdam metropolitan area, including Uilenstede, StuNest, BOLD and The Social Hub. Generally, VU Amsterdam can be reached easily by bike and public transport from all locations.
Types of contracts
Currently there is one type of rental contracts, namely rental contracts for a fixed period of one year.
Costs
The price of accommodation varies between €485 and €1,400 per month. Utilities (water/electricity/internet) are included in the price. When you choose a room with a low rent, you will have to share your facilities (kitchen and/or bathroom). A flexible attitude is desirable when sharing a bathroom and/or kitchen.
Housing fee
Students who want to apply for accommodation through VU Amsterdam will have to pay a housing fee of €500. The housing fee is charged to cover our costs in providing accommodation services to international students. It is not a deposit or part of the rent or any other payment.
Step 1
After your admission, you confirm that you will participate in the programme.
Step 2
Apply for accommodation in your personal dashboard on our website.
Step 3
Transfer the housing fee. Accommodation will be assigned based on a first paid, first served system. The date on which VU Amsterdam receives the payment will determine when you get access to the booking system.
Step 4
You will receive a confirmation e-mail from the International Office within 2 weeks. In the month of June, before the start of the academic year in September, you will receive instructions on how to book your room.
Students from all kinds of nationalities live closely together. A great way to make new friends!
We advise you to apply for housing as soon as possible after being admitted. A timely application for one of our programmes is therefore recommended.
More information about the different types of housing, rental periods, taxes and housing allowance can be found on our website: vu.nl/accommodation
If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to studentaccommodation@vu.nl
Amsterdam University College (AUC) has its own campus. Therefore, the housing procedure is different. See for more information www.auc.nl
“We understand that applying for a degree programme abroad can lead to many questions. Is my diploma valid in the Netherlands? Can I be admitted to the programme of my choosing? And how do I prove my English language proficiency? Registering in another country, complicated procedures, new systems: it is not always easy. That is why you will have an assigned International Student Advisor (ISA) from the very beginning.
For every faculty we have assigned ISAs who know everything about the programmes, requirements, and deadlines. We will guide you throughout the application process and answer any questions you might have. It is our priority to help you every step of the way, making sure you are all set to become a student at VU Amsterdam.”

“Moving to Amsterdam is one of the best choices you can make, but of course there are also some arrangements that need to be made. Where will you live, and do you perhaps need a visa or residence permit for your stay here? Our Services Team at VU Amsterdam International Office will help you with all these practicalities. We will make sure you’ll have an easy landing.
We offer accommodation to international students in English-taught degree programmes. The number of rooms available is limited so we cannot guarantee accommodation for every student, but we will do our best to find a suitable accommodation for as many students as possible. More information about housing can be found in this brochure or on our website.
Another important thing to take care of, is your potential immigration to the Netherlands. When you are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you need to complete the immigration procedure before you can start your studies at VU Amsterdam. Our Services team can help you with this, and will apply for the immigration procedure on your behalf.”
