One billion is a number we throw around all the time. Billionaires. Billion-dollar valuations. However, if you actually tried to count to a billion, one number per second with no breaks, it would take over 30 years. That’s absurd and kind of grounding.

It reminds me how slow progress can feel in the moment, and how much of life, work, and creativity is built in small, invisible increments we barely notice while they are happening.

95% of the serotonin (the chemical that shapes how we feel) in our bodies is produced in the gut, not the brain, which is kind of wild, and also reassuring. So much of what really moves us happens internally, quietly, without performance or polish.

“Don’t try to rush progress. Everything is coming together… quietly, invisibly, on its own timeline.”

BRIAN KOVENER

Founder, VUE Atlanta

This summer, I’m thinking less about chasing what’s urgent and more about protecting what feels meaningful: the work that takes time; the ideas that evolve slowly; the energy that’s worth something. Not everything needs to be immediate. Not everything needs to be seen.

At VUE, that’s what we try to follow. Not noise. Not flash. Just the things that hold weight. The things that last. This issue, like always, is our attempt to make something that does.

I’ve always felt differently about this time of year. Probably because I was born in July. There’s a certain clarity that comes with summer. Longer days. Fewer distractions. A little more space to think about what actually matters.

Here’s to long days, good energy, and knowing when to pause.

Happy summer!

I truly am happiest when it is bright and sunshiny out, so I am elated that summer has arrived! For me, summer signals more sunshine, more adventures, and more alfresco activities. These next few months, you can find me making the most of these long days: exploring fun places, sipping chilled libations, and being near the water as much as possible. A new season is a reminder that it is time to refresh your wardrobe, and I have the shop you need in your life. Recently, I chatted with local, Brazilian swimwear designer, Gianine McKenna, in her Buckhead store about her business and designing. You must stop by her chic boutique for gorgeous, new swimwear, resort wear and activewear. Of course, I picked out a couple of cute pieces to kickstart summer. Don’t miss my exclusive interview with VUE’s talented cover star.

For your rest and relaxation needs, I highly suggest making the drive to Serenbe. Nestled in the Chattahoochee Hills, this award-winning community is Georgia’s premiere wellness destination. Serenbe is known for its picturesque accommodations; delicious, locally grown cuisine; and outdoor activities. I had the pleasure of experiencing all that the property has to offer, from their luxe spa and horseback riding to their restaurants and inn. Read more about Serenbe inside.

We have additionally compiled a variety of travel destinations and local restaurants to explore, and much more. I hope that this issue inspires you to have your most delicious and exciting summer yet!

INVITED Spring Launch Party

SPRING LAUNCH

AT THE COMMERCE CLUB

On April 9, VUE Atlanta ushered in the new season in true high style with our exclusive Spring Launch event, held on the 49th floor of the iconic Commerce Club. With sweeping skyline views offering the best vantage point in the city, the evening was a celebration of elevated storytelling, luxury culture, and the creative pulse of Atlanta.

This season’s editorial journey began early spring with an intimate conversation inside the Presidential Suite at the Intercontinental Buckhead, where we sat down with the ever-iconic Phaedra Parks. That private shoot set the tone for what would become a defining feature of our spring issue, rooted in authenticity, refinement, and Southern glamour.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, guests arrived in their evening best, greeted by panoramic views and the sounds of a perfectly curated playlist. A live saxophonist and string duo layered the evening with sophistication, while signature cocktails and gourmet hors d’oeuvres circulated through the room. A custom VUE-themed cake closed the night on a sweet and stylish note.

The energy was vibrant, elevated by immersive visual moments, live artistry, and a crowd of Atlanta’s top tastemakers, entrepreneurs, and creatives. Cameras flashed, conversations flowed, and the room buzzed with what’s next for the city’s cultural scene.

We are grateful to everyone who made the evening unforgettable. From our partners and contributors to the VUE community that showed up and showed out, thank you for being part of this exciting chapter.

RE Restaurant

BeetleCat was opened by celebrated chef and restaurateur Ford Fry in 2016. Nestled in Atlanta’s vibrant neighborhood, Inman Park, this “oyster-ette” combines retro charm with fresh seafood, handcrafted cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere.

It’s hard not to imagine the salty breeze of the shore at this restaurant. Here, guests are swept away into a sea of nostalgia. BeetleCat, which is named after a wooden sailing dinghy, has large, unique doors inspired by tugboat windows. Bright blue cushioned bar stools and yellow tea lights perched on each table enhance the nautical ambiance. The space was illuminated by the dim glow of ‘Esteban’—the woodfire oven anchored at the heart of the oyster bar. Outside, there are two patios, so guests can enjoy alfresco dining.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of speaking with Chef Davis, who recommended starting with oysters and a cocktail to set the tone. The cocktail menu offers a variety of citrus flavors, while the oyster selection showcases diverse flavors ranging from salty and nutty to sweet and buttery. I started with a refreshing Bourbon Orange Punch paired with Point aux Pins oysters, which delivered a buttery texture, mild brine, and clean finish. From there, I sampled several guest favorites: Salt & Pepper Squid, Smoked Fish Dip, House Salad, and Fry Bread.

A unique aspect of BeetleCat is its diverse dinner menu, which is a delightful medley of flavors influenced by Pan-Asian, Brazilian, and Latin American cuisines. Standouts include the Moqueca Stew, Ceviche, and Bok Choy. After much deliberation, I chose the Moqueca Stew and the Specialty Lobster Roll; each dish expertly balanced bold flavors and fresh ingredients. To end on a sweet note, I indulged in the Mocha Crunch Cake, which was as decadent as it sounds.

For those seeking a cozier experience, below deck is BeetleCat’s ’70s-surf shack-inspired cocktail lounge. A wide staircase descends into the space, which warmly invites guests in with its homey decor and fun music, making it the perfect spot for unwinding with friends or enjoying a drink.

BeetleCat delivers a dining experience that feels both elevated and approachable. The exceptional quality of their food and hospitality makes this a culinary destination for any occasion—whether you’re savoring a meal with loved ones or navigating the waters of a first date.

At BeetleCat, the ship truly is yours.

This Rosé of Syrah showcases the expertise behind our viticulture and winemaking practices, providing a refined and sophisticated tasting experience. The expressive nature stems from the distinctive Syrah varietal, while its light and bright character is carefully preserved by intentionally harvesting early, when the grape’s acidity peaks and before excess fruit and sugar can develop. Ehlers Estate Sylviane Estate Blanc 2023

Taking inspiration from classic Bordeaux whites, head winemaker Adam Casto blends 13% Sémillon into the organically farmed, estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc, giving the wine a richness and tension that set it apart from the region’s standard styles. With fermentation in concrete eggs, neutral oak, and a touch of new French oak, this wine is all about layers— both in flavor and aging potential. The result? A nuanced and expressive estate white with notes of citrus blossoms, jasmine green tea, and sea spray, leading into a textured palate of Bosc pear, stone fruit, lemon zest and a seemingly never-ending finish.

Lazy Betty

A MICHELIN-star experience that feels like home
By: Serenity

Heard

Lazy Betty, Atlanta’s MICHELIN-starred restaurant in Midtown, offers an exceptional experience that combines innovation with refined dining. Upon visiting, guests are welcomed with an ambiance that feels sophisticated and intimate, yet down-to-earth. The warm, ambient lighting is accompanied by a trendy, curated playlist as well as banquette seating options to create an inviting setting. Every detail is thoughtfully curated, from the full bar menu to their meticulous dishes.

Dinner begins with a drink. There is an extensive cocktail and wine menu as well as zero-proof cocktails for guests seeking an alcohol-free experience. All of the drinks were both inventive and refreshing. A standout was the Blueberry Lime Mocktail – flavored sparkling water poured over a lively blend of citrus and berry. A crisp and vibrant start to the evening. The Mock Espresso Martini, on the other hand, delivered the rich, complex flavors of coffee with a smooth, non-alcoholic twist—a perfect balance for a taste with depth without the vodka.

The bar menu is nothing short of remarkable. A standout was the Shrimp Causa, featuring Georgia shrimp salad and creamy avocado encased in a velvety aji potato mousseline, and garnished with a tangy pepper relish. The Causa was creamy and incredibly flavorful – an absolute must-order for every visit. Another highlight on the bar menu was the Lobster and Corn Tortellini featuring sweet corn tortellini paired with poached Maine lobster, plated with a rich parmesan froth and topped with a leaf-shaped roasted chanterelle. Equally memorable was the Sunchoke Fry Bread, a bold creation that combined caramelized sunchoke and sunchoke sugar to make a fried ball and crowned with Irtysh River caviar. The combination of sweet and savory was masterfully executed, making this dish a true standout.

No meal is complete without dessert. The Verrine, a layered cup dessert, was rich and indulgent. A cream orange filling topped with a ground crust and flavored jelly, it was a perfect blend of sweet textures that complemented the savory dishes of the evening. The Petit Fours that followed were the perfect final touch, especially the matcha.

Lazy Betty succeeds in offering a refined dining experience. It is clear that there is a deep respect for quality ingredients and inventive combinations. The precision with which each dish is crafted reflects the restaurant’s commitment to the culinary arts. Lazy Betty is a noteworthy destination for those seeking a memorable culinary experience that feels like home. With impeccable, attentive service and a carefully curated menu, Lazy Betty firmly establishes itself as one of Atlanta’s finest restaurants and is deserving of its MICHELIN-star recognition.

Chef Trevor Shankman’s Maria

Dinner as a Love Letter

Chef Trevor Skankman’s vision for Maria was clear –a space that embodies the warmth, love, and connection to his late grandmother, Maria, instilled in him. Her influence is felt in every aspect of the supper club, where family, friends, and strangers are invited to come together and share more than just a meal.

Before the supper club came to life, Chef Shankman’s creative world revolved around drawing and painting. As a child, he showed an uncanny ability for hyperrealistic pencil work. His ever-supportive grandmother recognized that spark early on, to the point that she once tried to get him placed in the high school art class while he was still in pre-school.

His precision and creative focus eventually found a new medium. “My interest in art inevitably turned to food once I saw the intersection between art and cooking,” Chef Shankman recalls. In many ways, Maria is the natural evolution of that intersection.

As a young entrepreneur, only 22 years old, Chef Shankman has faced criticism for his age. “There’s always some form of criticism directed at me, whether it’s about my lack of experience in the industry or the belief that I haven’t ‘earned my stripes’ because of my age,” he admits.

Despite these challenges, Chef Shankman remains focused on building his brand with integrity. “I can’t really blame them for feeling that way, but, you know, I’m putting everything on the line. And I’m operating in good faith.”

What sets Maria apart from other restaurants is its immersive approach to dining; Chef Shankman allows his memory and emotion to guide every course. Each dish is inspired by his grandmother, not only her recipes but her presence. He describes her as passionate and intense and channels that same intensity into his dishes. Each course, surprising, bold, and personal, is meant to carry the emotional weight of her legacy.

One standout is the pine nut risotto, a dish that Shankman considers the clearest embodiment of his grandmother’s influence. It’s unexpected in flavor and rooted in a childhood memory of a soup she once made. The mix of nostalgia and surprise is what he strives for when curating his next dish at Maria.

“the most exclusive, underground dining experience in Atlanta”

Since opening its doors in April 2023, Maria has leaned into its ever-evolving nature. It offers an exclusive eight-course menu where no two dinners are alike, ensuring a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Recently, Shankman has partnered with The Vine Club, one of Atlanta’s only wine membership clubs. The club is nestled in the city and offers an intimate setting where Chef Shankman’s culinary storytelling is paired, course by course, with curated wine selections.

When seated, each guest receives a menu card that has been burned, with a poem inscribed on it. This creative detail isn’t just an artistic flourish; it’s a deliberate choice. “There’s a poem on the lefthand side, then the right-hand side is burned and crumbled... It’s meant to resemble Maria in totality. It’s a medium through which the idea of death is not being perceived as something inherently negative,” Chef Shankman says. “I think it’s a beautiful thing that life is inherently scarce… Food is the perfect iteration of that, because it’s so temporary. All of this work and all of this time that I put into each dish is consumed in like a minute, and I’m perfectly okay with that.”

At Maria, each course is a fleeting moment and a quiet celebration of life’s fragility. In honoring his

Limited to 2,000 numbered pieces, the Jack Ryde 100 Year Anniversary Limited Edition 2000T features blue saddle leather corner guards and matching leather lifting handles, embroidered signature, married with rich bronze accents and distinct signature plate celebrating Jack’s legacy. GIANINE MCKENNA GIANINE MCKENNA

talks about her journey as an entrepreneur and swimwear designer

Designer-entrepreneur-model Gianine McKenna is wearing a form-fitting, Juillet blue shine dress – one of her designs– when we meet at her eponymous boutique in the heart of Buckhead. The store, which opened in January 2024, is chicly adorned with wallpaper featuring vibrant parrots and palm fronds, and has walls lined with gold racks showcasing swimwear and resort wear in a variety of fun patterns and a rainbow of hues designed by the Brazilian powerhouse herself. Since opening, Gianine’s storefront has been featured on Bravo’s reality show, Married to Medicine, and is serving as the backdrop for a dating show on MTV today. “The cast is coming in to pick up some swimsuits for a trip,” shares Gianine.

Peddling sexy swimwear was something Gianine fell into. Born in Brazil and raised on St. Simons Island, Gianine and her family relocated to the area off the coast of Georgia for her father’s job when she was 9. While attending Georgia State University in 2013, Gianine would return from her trips to Brazil with bikinis for her girlfriends, back when Brazilian bikini bottoms were still a novelty. “It’s not like now. It’s rare that you find someone wearing a full bottom now. Over time, I was like, ‘Maybe I can sell these.’ Being Brazilian myself, it became almost an identity,” Gianine laughs. “My husband, my boyfriend [Dr. Mark McKenna, founder of OVME] at that time, he’s an entrepreneur; being around him, seeing how easily he made businesses happen... I never thought about having my own business. I’ve still got one more year. Why don’t I give that a go and see how it goes?”

By 2018, Gianine was designing swimwear and manufacturing it in Brazil. “I had already made the connections in Brazil, and my clients were asking for specific styles and specific colors, so I was able to begin giving them exactly what they wanted. Once you start something and the passion kicks in, then you’re all in. How can I make it better and better and better?”

While building her business, Mark and Gianine, who met in 2010 while out with friends at MF Sushi in Buckhead, were married and had their two daughters. “Life happens in between and time flies!” Gianine and her family return to her hometown once a year. “We have a good groove now, so I don’t have to go down, but it’s nice to touch fabrics before we do a collection.”

How would you characterize your designs?

“When I first launched, it was playful, fun, and young. At that time, swim fashion was a lot of cutouts. Now, things are simplistic and luxury fabrics, textured fabrics. I would say it’s more of a modern woman now. She’s going somewhere like Saint-Tropez, St. Barths, Ibiza, or Cancun… where they need a whole ensemble now. They gravitate more towards quality, things that are going to last in their closet, versus something super trendy. And a great, great fit.”

What’s your best seller?

“The Roberta bottom. They’re a wider band. It has a V in the front, so it creates a slimming effect. Some ruching in the back. The elastic gives the girls a boost in the booty. That’s been a tried and true for many, many years. But now, we’re adding different pieces to it. Since I opened up the store, I am able to really try different styles faster, and see what’s sticking. We do a lot of resort wear now. So, dresses, skirts, tops, but I would say dresses would be the most natural flow because then you can wear it at night. You have your day outfit, which is the bikini, and usually a cover-up, and then your night outfit. This [the dress she is wearing] is part of our collection. You can wear it during the day, but it easily translates to night with a little heel, especially if you’re in St. Barths.”

Where would you like to see your company go in the next 5 years?

“We’ve hired some amazing girls for social media ads, and they’ve been able to broaden our brand view. We’ve experienced huge growth outside of Atlanta this year. Just becoming a nationally recognized brand.”

Who do you envision wearing your designs?

“Giselle Bündchen, I would love that! The original 2000s supermodels –that would be great.”

Is there anything you have had to overcome with your company?

“We’ve had to pivot a lot, and it’s always fun. For example, even opening the store, I was like, ‘OK, I had to make a few changes from online.’ And I felt like my clients in Atlanta wanted to have a place to try things on, so that was a pivot to how I had been doing things. Supply chain challenges –I deal with that on a daily basis... But honestly, I do tend to twist things into a positive. I don’t dwell much on negativity.”

Do you have a favorite piece?

“I am liking the pink; that one has a scale with a slight shimmer. Girls have been really liking it. This fabric [motions to her Juillet blue shine dress] blew up online! This is the most I’ve ever ordered in a fabric. I wasn’t prepared to sell out of it so quickly. I thought, for the first time, maybe I’ll just take pre-orders. Well, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pre-orders came through, and I had to maneuver that. Lots of messaging people, ‘It’s coming.’ Just good customer service when you have that many people waiting on a specific bikini. By the time they arrived, we were already sold out, and we had to put in another order.”

What is the key to your success?

“Getting to know your clients and seeing them as more than just a client. Through the years, you develop true friendships with them versus passing and going. I would also say that for a swimwear online brand, a good photographer! That’s one corner you cannot cut if you want to be successful. And keep going. Keep at it, don’t get discouraged. As long as you love it, there’s a passion there, I think you will do it.”

What would people be surprised to find out about you?

“Something interesting and unique? Oh, I have a twin! Believe it or not, not many people know that because it’s been 10 years since she moved to New York. Some people are shocked every time I say it.”

Geppy Pisanelli

Illuminating the Universal Language of Art

For Italian-born, visual artist Geppy Pisanelli, “painting doesn’t need translation.” Art is a universal form of communication that doesn’t require fluency to appreciate or enjoy. It allows individuals to express themselves and connect with others without the need for words or translation. This makes art even more powerful because it bypasses the need for “decoding.” Pisanelli’s work speaks a universal language, transcending physical borders and cultures. But, like any language, art has its roots.

We’ve all explored and interacted with art in some way, whether in passing, actively searching for art, or creating it ourselves. Reflecting on Picasso’s famous words, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up,” Pisanelli shares that his love and passion for art started at a young age. This early connection shaped his lifelong dedication to it. He has continued to pursue and nurture this passion into adulthood, showcasing his work in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including six solo shows in New York galleries.

Geppy Pisanelli’s most recent exhibition in New York, Hidden Lights, explores the title’s oxymoron by placing artificial lights in a natural environment, creating a “visual and intellectual contradiction.” The work plays with the unexpected nature of two opposites coming together, depicting lightness and darkness on the canvas. It challenges expectations and pushes the boundaries of how we traditionally perceive light, space, nature, and the artificial.

The idea of hidden lights suggests that something beneath the surface is always waiting to be uncovered. Ultimately, the collection reflects the inner human condition, inviting viewers to think critically when observing the paintings. Of course, Pisanelli hopes spectators will do that at any exhibit. But at his art installation, he urges viewers to look beyond what’s simply in front of them. The immersive experience fosters an intimate interaction with the work, encouraging a deeper engagement with the art. By bringing this conversation into a New York gallery, Pisanelli emphasizes that art, like human experience, is universal and deeply personal.

Although Pisanelli may live and work in New York, he never distances himself from his Italian heritage. His Italian cultural identity plays a crucial role in shaping his identity as a person and artist. He draws influence from some of the greats, like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Giorgio de Chirico, as well as contemporary Italian artists, weaving these influences into his work on the global art scene. The fusion of the past and present is essential. This combination keeps traditional artistic dialogue alive while evolving with the landscape of contemporary art.

At its core, Pisanelli’s art is about speaking across time, culture, and the obvious. Whether exploring light and darkness, honoring his Italian roots, or embracing constant artistic evolution, Pisanelli’s paintings offer viewers an opportunity to engage with the world on a deeper level. Hidden Lights isn’t just an exhibit—it’s an invitation to explore the hidden depths of human experience, to reflect on the contradictions that define our lives. Through his lens, we can all communicate with one another no matter what language we speak or where we come from. At the end of the day, we all have more shared experiences than we realize.

Distillery of Modern Art

Come by for the cocktails, art, and eclectic events

Distillery of Modern Art (DoMA) brings art to their spirits and the walls of their space. The distillery produces a variety of in-house crafted spirits to create a uniquely palatable experience in each of their beverages, which are rotated seasonally at their bar, The Kandinsky Room. For those who want to bartend at home, you can purchase a bottle of Atlanta Vodka, Peach Flavored Vodka, Nouveau Gin, Amaro Peach, Corn Whiskey, and the two latest releases, Bourbon and Rye! DoMA goes beyond bartending, offering social events, live music, and unique eats.

SUSTAINABILITY

Distillery of Modern Art is leading the way for other distilleries by integrating sustainability into its practices. Making it a primary focus in its operations, the distillery has stepped up by investing in initiatives that reduce water waste, recycle resources, and minimize energy consumption. DoMA uses a closed-loop system to recycle all the water used for cooling, ensuring that the water is not wasted. The same water is repurposed to cool down the “mash” created by the distillery.

Spent grain, which is utilized in the distilling process, is not discarded but given to a local cattle farmer to be used as feed, thereby minimizing waste and supporting local agriculture. Additionally, the distillery reduces

transportation-related fossil fuel emissions by sourcing raw materials locally. Going into year three, DoMA is still searching for opportunities to advance sustainable distilling, including utilizing spent grain to its fullest potential and using the high protein content within the grain for baked goods or other food products.

MODERN ART

Beyond sustainability, DoMA supports the local creative community by providing a commission-free gallery space that showcases both emerging and established artists. The artwork displayed inside the distillery is available for purchase directly from the artist, allowing creators to retain 100% of their sales. This model reflects DoMA’s commitment to empowering artists and integrating modern art into everyday spaces. Additionally, the

distillery’s signature label designs—each bottle featuring original artwork—further solidify the brand’s blend of art and craft.

HAPPY + YAPPY HOURS

The cocktail lounge is open to the public on Thursdays through Saturdays from 5:00–10:30 pm and on Sundays from 12 pm–5:30 pm. As the manufacturer, DoMA can’t serve alcohol that is not made on-site, so all specialty liqueurs on their menu were designed and made in-house. Meaning? You can’t get their cocktails anywhere else in the world!

Every Sunday, 12–5:30 pm, dog owners are encouraged—complete with a 10% discount on their bar tab—to bring along a furry friend. Have a date? Make it a double-dog date and get 20% off. This is just on Sundays.

On Thursdays and Fridays from 5–6 pm, petless patrons enjoy a bargain as well, with the distillery offering a free snack (meat, cheese, almonds, or olives) with the purchase of a cocktail.

PRIVATE EVENTS

Looking to host an event as distinctive as your guest list? DoMA provides a creative and versatile space for private events, from weddings and corporate gatherings to nonprofit fundraisers and milestone celebrations. With indoor and outdoor options, full AV capabilities, and access to their world-class bar and gallery space, the venue makes a perfect backdrop for events of any scale. WATER WONDERS

Andrew Kaner’s innovative water features are making a splash globally

Few sights spark relaxation and joy more than a glimpse of sparkling blue waters. Whether the color, the sound or the surrounding atmosphere, something about a pool can instantly transport us to a world away from the everyday. There’s a reason hotels and homeowners invest in pools, spas, and hot and cold plunges, and today’s savvy buyers are turning to high-end design and multi-functional water features that transcend imagination.

One of the visionaries bringing those imagined water features to life is Andrew Kaner, MLA, Certified Master Pool Designer, and owner of Aquatic Consultants, Inc. Andrew is behind some of the best pools and spas in the world and has a mission to create a society of professional water architects who embrace innovation, understand function, and can leave behind water projects that exceed expectations.

Andrew started his career in the hospitality industry but found his passion in landscaping.

“I’ve always had an affinity for horticulture and was always checking out the landscape of the hotels where I worked. I eventually learned about landscape architects and realized I could make a living as a glorified gardener,” he quips. He pursued his Master of Landscape Architecture degree and started working for Geomantic Designs. The company was asked to put pools into their designs, but they needed to find someone who could meld the design with the engineering behind it. Realizing those people

were hard to find, Andrew started to study pools.

He turned to Brian Van Bower who had five decades of professional experience in the swimming pool and spa industry and held more than 100 industry design awards. Brian started his career operating a pool service and supply company with a robust clientele in Miami. When he serviced pools, he noticed the pools didn’t match the extravagant houses and architecture of the properties. He set out to change that, eventually founding Genesis Design Group, an international company specializing in teaching the design, engineering, and construction of swimming pools, spas, water features, and outdoor living areas. He and Andrew shared a passion for water features, and soon Aquatic Consultants, Inc. launched. Brian has since pulled back and sold the business to Andrew.

“Everything Brian and I did was a new idea and it was inspiring. He’s a pioneer in the industry. I’m continuing the legacy and growing. I feel that combined with Genesis, we’ve raised the bar in the industry,” says Andrew. “The profession that I like to call water architecture, is very new and not well known. I think we can improve the visibility and need.”

With projects around the globe, including 55 in Bermuda alone, Andrew and his team are reshaping the pool and spa industry.

Where infinity pools took center stage in the pool industry a few years back, today, there is much more to consider. Fueled by the Covid era, homeowners look for ways to connect to the

outdoors at home, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living spaces. “Many people don’t get in their pools that often, but they see it from their yard and their house. The pool creates an environment of well-being that comes from being by the water. It’s not just sitting on the landscape, it is part of it,” says Andrew.

That desire for connectivity has led to projects like canals that run from outside, directly into the home and a trend in natural stone pools with cascading waterfalls. “Clients have healthier lifestyles so they want lap pools, hot and cold plunges, and spa details. Being in and around the water has lots of positive effects. It’s a holistic experience connecting to the landscape, hearing the audible tones of water,” Andrew comments.

Vanishing edges are still popular but now, there are also choices for perimeter or elevated overflows. Combining fire and water is also trending with sunken fire pits protected by acrylic walls. It’s not just the shape and function, the look is changing with options for custom made tiles, mosaic artistry, durable and beautiful porcelain, or natural stones.

“We have clients that want something completely different and ask us to come up with a new idea. It pushes us to think how we can give them what they want, but ensure it works. Innovation and technology must match and that’s where we grow our capabilities.”

That innovation shows. A homeowner in Texas wanted an egg-shaped sculpture to be centered in the pool with swim up access through a hole in the bottom. Inside was bench seating that looked up to a hole in the roof that perfectly framed a specific constellation. Another client dreamed of a 62-foot waterfall that was natural-looking but didn’t create a splash at the bottom. “The idea defied gravity. Water has to break. But we came up with a double fountain system with a rain cascade topped by a reflecting pool, an idea we got from the fountains at Ground Zero,” shares Andrew.

Photo: Jimi Smith Photography

One of the company’s largest projects has been to design every pool on Moskito Island in the British Virgin Islands. Owned by Sir Richard Branson, the island contains 8 private lots with room for many water features. One lot alone requested 18 separate pools and spas with one pool that sits above an indoor living area that can be viewed through acrylic windows. Another home has a canal that flows into the master bedroom and a net that hangs above the pool so you can walk across the water.

Lazy rivers, shallow lounge areas, hot and cold plunges, koi ponds, even living water bodies where things are growing as if in a natural lake or pond, are all frequent requests that Andrew is happy to answer. “I’m fortunate and grateful to work on the greatest, highest level projects in the world.”

Joybird collaborates with Pantone on new hues and more

When it comes to home design, color holds the power to transform a space, but it’s the seamless blend of elevated comfort and rich textures that truly defines it. Joybird’s multi-season collaboration with Pantone brings this vision to life, featuring a collection that celebrates luxurious materials and thoughtfully crafted details. The collaboration captures a sense of warmth and sophistication, inviting you to experience home design that is as comforting as it is stylish.

“Joybird has been rooted in color since its inception,” says Gifty Walker, director of merchandising. “Collaborating with Pantone through furniture is the perfect pairing. The Joybird x Pantone collection is about embracing and elevating your style at home through color.”

Inspired by the calming qualities of chocolate and coffee, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, introduces a warm, earthy twist on classic neutrals.

“This spring release leans into our brand DNA, which is rooted in color,” says Walker. “The first release was monochromatic, but now we’re showing how you can use neutrals as a foundation and infuse complementary pops of color into your space.”

Joybird expanded the collection, introducing two new colors designed to elevate the aesthetic and add to the palette. PANTONE 18-4417 Tapestry is a deep blue shade that contrasts with the grounding warmth of Mocha Mousse. This color creates a balance and adds layers

of tranquility and sophistication. PANTONE 17-1608 Heather Rose is an antique-inspired pink that adds a timeless elegance to any room. Heather Rose beautifully complements the earth tones of Mocha Mousse and the richness of Tapestry.

The new Pantone hues span all of Joybird’s furniture frames, including favorites like the Amelia Grand Chair, Lewis Sofa, and Carin Sectional—offering rich color, cozy comfort, and endless ways to mix, match, and make the space your own.

Joybird additionally offers new fabric choices in the Pantone palette, such as the popular Crave fabric and the new Checker fabric, an ultra-soft jacquard velvet with an on-trend checkerboard pattern. The Checker

fabric’s alternating pile brings added layers of visual and tactile interest. These additions add a new dimension to the collection, offering more options for customers to experiment with by incorporating bold and neutral hues into their spaces.

With this expanded collaboration with Pantone, Joybird continues to embrace the power of color in home design. As Pantone’s Color of the Year inspires the future of new hues, Joybird will keep adding color and fabric combinations that transform, personalize, and elevate every room.

Traditional Glam

A look at Kristin Wadsworth’s moody Vinings project

When interior designer Kristin Wadsworth takes on a design project, it’s clear she doesn’t just create a space– she crafts a home that truly reflects the people who live there. Creating a home is more than aesthetics; her recent project in Vinings is a prime example of this philosophy. In this home, she blended bold and moody elements while adding personal touches uniquely tailored to the family.

“I think as a designer, our job is to tap into what the client needs and deliver, making sure it’s on par with what they want. We don’t want to pick out things they’ll never go with,"

Wadsworth shares.

Wadsworth describes the Vinings home’s aesthetic as “transitional glam,” combining traditional elements with modern flair. “It’s about blending the new with the old,” she explains. One of the home’s standout features is its daring use of dark, moody colors. “I love dark greens and blues, and there certainly is an abundance within this house.”

The dining room, Wadsworth’s favorite room in the house, stands out as one of the main focal points of the home, thanks to its bold use of design and color. “We color-drenched the room, so the ceiling, trim, and walls are all painted the same soft gray-blue.” This technique creates a calming and cohesive space. Wadsworth added a semi-gloss finish on the ceiling to make the trim truly pop. A stunning chandelier, aptly named “The Forest,” hangs in the center of the room, adding a unique and natural element to the space. “It’s a gorgeous, dramatic piece that complements the color scheme and adds lots of texture to the space.”

The chandelier is a unique creation from Currey and Company, with individual stones hung to create an organic and ethereal feel.

A key feature of the home is its seamless connection to nature through openness and light. By adding lots of windows, they allow natural light to flood the space beautifully. “We didn’t want to block any light, especially going up the front stairwell of the home.

We painted all the trim and window casement black, which made the window pop and brought this modern edge to the traditional feel.”

While the home exudes sophistication, every design choice was made with real life in mind. Durable, livable fabrics and thoughtful material choices make the home well-suited for a family, with every space, down to the children’s rooms, designed to be both beautiful and practical.

The home’s exterior features a mix of natural brick and light gray siding, complementing the black window frames. “The black windows against the light gray create a striking contrast that feels fresh and modern,” Wadsworth explains.

The powder room in the house takes a bolder, moodier turn, making it one of the most distinctive design choices. Wadsworth worked closely with the client to select a wallpaper that added to the dramatic feel. “The powder room is a chance to take a design risk and do something bolder without overwhelming the entire house.” The vanity, made entirely from quartzite, is wallmounted at an angle for a sleek and functional design.

Wadsworth’s use of bold design choices and meticulous details creates a home that is as personal as it is stylish. Her thoughtful design approach, combined with the client’s vision, brought to life a home that balances sophistication with family living.

HELDERBURG

Redefining the Art of Bespoke Defender Restorations

In a world where automotive restoration is often driven by profit, Helderburg stands apart as a brand built on passion, craftsmanship, and an uncompromising commitment to quality. Founded by Paul Potratz, Helderburg has redefined the restored Land Rover Defender market, offering bespoke builds that seamlessly blend classic heritage with modern luxury. Each vehicle, meticulously crafted over 3,000 hours, is not just a restoration but a testament to a lifestyle that Paul is dedicated to curating.

Beyond Restoration: A Lifestyle Philosophy

For Paul, Helderburg is more than just a restoration shop. “I never wanted this to be a large-scale company,” he shares. “It’s about quality, not quantity. This is something I do for fun, and I want to sell the lifestyle, not just the vehicle.” While many competitors focus on maximizing profit, Paul remains committed to elevating the Defender, ensuring that every detail serves a purpose.

This philosophy resonates deeply with his clients, many of whom view their Helderburg Defender as more than just a vehicle. It’s an extension of their personality, an icon of adventure and exclusivity. “When people see a custom build from Helderburg, they know it’s a Helderburg,” Paul says. The brand has become synonymous with unique colorways, high-performance enhancements, and a dedication to handcrafted excellence.

Unparalleled Craftsmanship: Sourcing the Best Materials

Helderburg Defenders are known for their luxurious yet durable interiors, which are carefully designed for both style and function. Paul’s process of sourcing materials is nothing short of obsessive. “I spent a long time searching for the right leather and eventually came across a shop in Scotland that had exactly what I needed,” he explains. “It had to be durable enough to withstand a dog’s nails but still refined. That was important to me because I have a dog myself, and I know how much that matters to clients.”

This dedication to reliability extends to every material choice, from German wool and Italian Alcantara to a custom-engineered Helderburg braking system that enhances performance without compromising the Defender’s vintage appeal.

Modern Engineering, Classic Soul

While Helderburg embraces modern technology, Paul ensures that the classic DNA of the Defender remains intact. “It’s all about the exterior maintaining that classic flair, even if the interior and mechanics have been completely refined,” he explains. His approach allows clients to experience the nostalgia of a vintage Land Rover with the comfort, safety, and reliability of a modern luxury vehicle.

This dedication to authenticity has won over a dedicated clientele. While Helderburg’s largest demographic ranges from 25 to 45-year-olds, Paul notes that the actual buyers tend to be older, often seasoned collectors who appreciate the artistry and exclusivity behind each build.

Lessons from a Passionate Craftsman

Paul’s journey to founding Helderburg wasn’t without its challenges. Reflecting on his first Defender build, he recalls an important lesson: “Don’t rush it. Make sure you’re pulling in the right people—people who are qualified and understand the level of craftsmanship required.” This meticulous approach ensures that every Helderburg Defender meets the highest standards of quality and performance.

Beyond cars, Paul’s passion for precision extends to upcoming projects, including the development of a bulletproof vehicle and a coffee table photography book showcasing Helderburg’s stunning builds. These ventures

further emphasize his dedication to creating timeless, high-quality works of art, whether in automotive or print form.

More Than a Business—A Legacy

Paul grew up watching his father work in his repair shop, where he was introduced to the world of cars. That early exposure shaped his lifelong passion for craftsmanship. Now, as he builds Helderburg into a respected name in the industry, he also thinks about the future. “When my father passed away, I realized how important it is to leave behind something meaningful. One day, I want to pass this legacy down to someone who will continue to uphold the Helderburg name at the highest level.”

When asked what he hopes people take away from Helderburg, his answer is simple: It’s about making something better than what’s already out there. While others prioritize profit, for Paul, it’s all about passion—a passion that drives every stitch, every bolt, and every innovation that makes a Helderburg Defender truly oneof-a-kind.

For families or groups, the Villas at Prana Maya offer spacious accommodations ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 square feet, complete with private plunge pools, chefinspired kitchens, wet bars, game rooms, and stunning terraces. It’s villa living with an island soul.

Epicurean Experiences, Island-Style

Food here isn’t just a meal — it’s a moment. Chefs at The Grill at Prana Maya craft elevated Belizean cuisine using local ingredients, many of which are sourced from nearby farms and the sea itself. Open-air seating and ocean views turn every bite into a sensory celebration.

Guests can sip cocktails at the Cocktail and Ice Bar, enjoy in-room dining, or opt for a private chef experience on their villa terrace. The Island Club, opening mid-2025, will bring light fare, a full-service bar, and a firelit social space to the resort’s recreation hub.

A Spa Sanctuary for the Mind and Body

Wellness is an integral part of the Prana Maya experience. The resort’s serene Spa features six treatment rooms for massages, sound therapy, and body rituals using ecoconscious, reef-friendly products. A breezy yoga space and open-air spa terrace invite guests to stretch, breathe, and be. Complimentary guided yoga sessions are offered twice a week, because centering yourself should never be scheduled too far in advance.

Island Play

Guests have complimentary access to paddleboards, water bikes, kayaks, as well as fishing and snorkeling equipment, allowing them to enjoy activities off the shores and docks of the resort. Opening mid-2025, The Island Club at Prana Maya adds a social twist to sporty afternoons with lawn games and a palapa-shaded pickleball court, illuminated for evening play.

Those chasing the thrill of Belize’s famed sportfishing can embark on bonefish, permit, and tarpon expeditions through a partnership with High Adventure Company. The resort’s custom-designed fishing boats, expert guides, and top-tier gear make it one of the few places in the world with single-day “Grand Slam” potential.

Weddings and Special Occasions

Prana Maya offers an idyllic setting for weddings and special occasions. Local artisans craft traditional thatched palapas that accent the resort’s intimate seashore spaces. On-site catering and scenic ceremony locations create a one-of-a-kind canvas for destination weddings.

Whether sipping cocktails by the infinity pool, kayaking under the stars, or honoring your breath in a sunrise yoga session, you’re not just on vacation — you’re fully present.

And that’s the magic of Prana Maya. It doesn’t just change your scenery. It changes you. Every detail invites you to breathe deeper, wander further, and live more fully.
