A Note From The Founder

BRIAN KOVENER

Founder, VUE Atlanta brian@atlantavue.com

Perfection is a myth. But mistakes...? Mistakes are where the magic happens.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa wasn’t supposed to lean—it was an architectural miscalculation. Attempts to fix it only made it more crooked. Yet centuries later, it’s one of the most visited landmarks in the world, all because of that mistake. In Japan, the art of kintsugi turns broken pottery into something even more valuable by filling its cracks with gold, highlighting the imperfections instead of hiding them.

Art and life aren’t about flawless execution. The goal isn’t perfection but expression – to share who we are and how we see the world, to create something that allows others to see what they didn’t know they already understood.

We spend so much time trying to get things “right” that we forget about the beauty in the missteps, unexpected turns, and offbeat ideas that don’t seem to fit until they do.

Here at VUE, we take art seriously, however, we don’t approach it seriously. Make a mess. Experiment. Embrace the randomness. Follow the idea that doesn’t seem fully formed yet.

We assume we know how the story ends before it’s even written. We cling to certainty when growth comes from embracing uncertainty. Nothing is for certain until it has happened. Even then, that is still debatable. It’s so important to accept inevitable imperfections for growth to take place.

Here’s to imperfection, progress, and the stories that surprise us.

A Letter From The Editor

Atlanta had a lovely winter season. We had a couple snow days (I love seeing my quiet, little neighborhood blanketed in fresh snow), and plenty of frigid weather that allowed me to fully embrace my beloved sweaters, coats and boots. But with spring just around the corner, I must confess that I am so ready for sunny, blue skies, balmy 80-degree weather, and alfresco outings.

Wedding season is approaching, too. Now, is the time when happy couples are planning their upcoming nuptials. VUE Atlanta has curated a list of dreamy venues that would serve as the perfect space to get married. If you need some inspiration when it comes to your wedding registry, we’ve culled myriad must-haves --everything from your everyday essentials to some luxurious picks.

Our spring issue features exclusive interviews with the best of the best. Atlanta’s very own Phaedra Parks graces our cover. Known for her time on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, the accomplished attorney/businesswoman generously shared so much about her life and the lessons she has learned.

I had the pleasure of interviewing and sharing a meal with awardwinning celebrity chef/restaurateur, Chef Marcus Samuelsson, in his Atlanta restaurant, Marcus Bar & Grille. [10/10 recommend you pop in to enjoy their PCH Rita and some amazing, elevated comfort classics on their great patio.] I am in awe of Chef Marcus’ extraordinary and inspiring journey, and his deep desire to give back. This is an interview you don’t want to miss. I also sat down with Atlanta-born actress, Arséma Thomas. Her amazing story will push you to listen to your heart and chase your dreams.

This issue additionally showcases a few of Atlanta’s best restaurants, including my personal favorites for sushi and burgers, respectively: Umi and NFA Burger. We have a luxe spa guide, vacation destinations, and lots more. Enjoy!

VOTED #1 HOTEL IN THE SOUTH

RE Restaurant

Keeping up with Atlanta’s ever-evolving restaurant scene can be a challenge, but we want our readers to enjoy the city’s most luxurious dining experiences. So read on as we explore an elegant sushi spot.

Umi, located in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, is where classic and sophisticated Japanese flavors meet meticulous techniques. In the 11 years since its opening, locals, visitors and celebrities alike have delighted in the high-quality cuisine. With Executive Chef Todd Dae Kulper’s leadership in the kitchen, Umi has built a luxe reputation for itself and is dedicated to using the freshest fish and proteins sourced daily from around the world. Their sushi selection features sashimi, traditional nigiri, sousaku nigiri (chef’s signature creations), box sushi and specialty, traditional, and house rolls.

Diners can prime their palates with favorite starters like, Tuna Truffle Chips, Yellowtail Jalapeno, and Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice. Other popular starters include, the housemade Sake Cheese and Avocado Salad served with wasabi vinaigrette.

For those interested in a hot dish that blends sweet and savory, Chef Kulper serves up Lobster Toban-Yaki with lobster beurre noisette and Smoked Duck Breast Tataki with shigo pear and aged balsamic vinegar. For the diner with a taste for unexpected pairings, the Surf & Turf Roll includes shrimp tempura with mayo, sliced and torched A5 Wagyu beef, soy sauce, chimichurri sauce, and tempura crunchy flakes.

There’s even more to discover on the dessert menu, which features a Chocolate Kyu and Angel Food Cake topped with vanilla ice cream and yuzu sauce. I can think of no better way to end the meal than with their prized dessert, a Valrhona chocolate sphere filled with fresh berries, red bean pastry cream and mascarpone cream infused with Tamazaki 18-year whiskey sauce.

The exceptional fare is elevated by the dim glow of the moody dining room — designed by the late Atlanta artist and designer, Todd Murphy. Evoking an earthy atmosphere, Murphy’s design reflects the pure and clean essence of Asian cuisine. The contrasting woods that frame the space paired with sleek minimalistic seating, create an alluring ambiance that strikes a balance between elegance and simplicity.

Hidden one floor above is a bright, serene space, M by Umi. The omakase room is a more intimate space, decorated with white yakisugi walls — an ancient Japanese technique consisting of charring cedar boards — that offers a stark contrast to Umi. Opened in 2023, M by Umi presents a unique omakase experience that involves an ever-changing selection of around 18 dishes based on the chef’s inspiration for the week. M by Umi serves unexpected flavors, like Wagyu with harissa or luxurious combinations like scallops topped with caviar. These tasty offerings can be paired with premium sake or craft cocktails from Himitsu — Umi’s Japanese cocktail lounge located next door.

Umi captivates your senses with its authentic Japanese flavors and thoughtfully designed interior. Enjoy a memorable experience at Umi and complement the night out with your choice of cocktails, spirits, sake, and wine at Himitsu.

Hotel RE Chateau Elan

A French-inspired escape just an hour from Atlanta

Right outside the perimeter, in Braselton, is the perfect weekend getaway—offering a taste of Europe without the flight or time change. A place reminiscent of the French countryside, right here in Georgia? Count me in! About an hour’s drive north of Atlanta is Chateau Elan, a beautifully enchanting luxury resort and winery. Its 3,500 acres of rolling greenery transport you to an unexpected and extraordinary place.

As a Four Diamond resort, visitors can expect a toptier experience in every regard. There, guests can enjoy the perfect balance of exploration and peace, all while soaking in the beauty of the vineyard, incredible accommodations, and outstanding amenities. With an exceptional staff to match, Chateau Elan is an ideal destination for those looking to recharge, pamper themselves, and enjoy time alone or with loved ones. Even well-trained pets under 50 pounds up to date with their vaccinations can join in on the fun at the Inn and Villas.

Whether you’re there to unwind completely or dive into an immersive experience, Chateau Elan has something for everyone. Guests can indulge in wine tours and tastings, spa treatments, an outdoor pool, a 45-hole golf course, a nature trail, and various sports like tennis, pickleball, volleyball, and basketball. Plus, there’s a rotating calendar of events. For example, you can listen to a live DJ at Louis’ House of Bourbon on weekends, or from now until February 15, enjoy outdoor ice skating at the Rink

As an award-winning winery and one of the largest on the East Coast, it is a must-do while visiting. Experience their tours and tastings in their castle-like building. Chateau Elan offers more than 30 varieties of wine. Overwhelmed by so many incredible choices? Opt for one of their flights so you don’t have to overthink or limit yourself to just one. Taste various wines, from sparkling to white to red, depending on the flight you choose. Whether you’re a self-proclaimed connoisseur or a casual drinker, this expansive winery is a must-visit, even just for a single sip. Before you leave the resort, buy a bottle to take home.

And, of course, you can’t forget about the food! With several on-site dining options, you won’t go hungry. After spending the day exploring, you’ll want to revel in a meal at one of their restaurants. There is Marc’s, an upscale chophouse; Louis’, a cozy speakeasy; Paddy’s, an authentic Irish pub; Versailles, serving American food with a French influence; Fleur de Lis, offering wellnessinspired dining at the spa; Sarazen’s, a restaurant overlooking the golf course; and Le Petit Café. With a blend of Southern flavors and European influences, you simply can’t resist wanting to try everything during your stay.

Chateau Elan goes above and beyond to ensure guests leave feeling pampered and refreshed, making it the best local vacation. A semi-hidden gem in North Georgia, it’s a premier location that everyone should experience. No matter the season, it’s the perfect place to unwind, escape the city, and savor an unforgettable experience.

Smash Hit

For an award-winning burger, head to NFA Burger

There are countless options for everything, and burgers aren’t exempt from this list. With hundreds of burger spots all over Georgia, deciding where to go for a truly exceptional burger may seem impossible. But among all the choices, NFA Burger in Dunwoody stands out as a must-visit spot for its delicious flavors, unique smashing technique, and an unexpected location— inside a Chevron gas station.

This award-winning spot, opened by Billy Kramer in December 2019, embodies what a burger should be. The name “NFA” stands for “Not Fooling Around,” a philosophy that encapsulates the restaurant’s straightforward, no-nonsense approach to burger crafting. Inspired by Kramer’s pet peeve of overcomplicated burger lists, the menu delivers a no-nonsense, flavor-packed experience that’s all about top-notch quality. This quality hasn’t

Photo: Erik-Meadows

gone unnoticed—NFA Burger has earned prestigious accolades, including being named the Best Burger in Georgia by Food & Wine, inclusion in Thrillist’s Best Burgers in America list, and being recognized as Georgia’s Favorite Burger by Business Insider.

At the core of NFA Burger’s famous smashed burger is the Maillard reaction—a cooking technique that creates a perfect sear, locking in deep, savory flavors. The result? A burger with a rich, crispy crust and a burst of flavor in every bite. Guests are encouraged to get “Billy’s Classic,” a delicious combination of mustard, pickles, cheese, and the signature sassy sauce—an homage to Kramer’s daughter. The sassy sauce adds a bold kick that elevates the burger, and it’s also the perfect dipping sauce for a side of crispy tots. During my recent visit, I had the exciting opportunity to craft my own burger under Kramer’s guidance and experience the smashing technique firsthand—a process that, I must admit, took a bit more strength than I had anticipated.

In addition to its signature burgers, the menu features an assortment of sausages, hot dogs, and side options including “sassy” tater tots and fries. All of these savory flavors can be complemented by irresistible Belgian waffles flown in directly from Belgium, and housemade cinnamon sugar twists.

From its humble beginnings as an Instagram account @billysburgers to its status as a beloved local gem, NFA Burger embodies what it means to create a dining experience rooted in authenticity, care, and flavor. And soon, even more burger lovers will get to experience it firsthand—this spring, a second full-service location is set to open at Avalon in Alpharetta. The new spot will offer both indoor and outdoor seating, a walk-up window for quick takeout, TVs, and a full bar, all while keeping its signature counter-service setup. Don’t take my word for it—stop by and see why NFA Burger continues to win over the hearts, and taste buds, of Atlantans.

“The Billy’s classic is what I see as the perfect burger – after experimenting with and tasting hundreds of burgers, this is it. Simple and classic, all the while nothing simple about it.” - Billy Kramer

After maceration on the skins for about 25 days, the wine ages in new Allier barriques for 20 months and for 8 months in large Slavonian barrels, followed by bottle ageing for 10 months. This is an elegant, sophisticated wine with a noble profile and great aromatic expression. The enveloping and intense scent rises vertically, revealing ripe but still-fresh fruit, followed by notes of toasted tobacco, dark spices and liquorice. It enchants the palate with its extraordinary balance, lengthy persistence and soft, silky tannins.

Jermann Dreams 2022

SRP $89 Jermann is known for their precise bottlings that capture the essence of Friuli (and its famed ‘Ponca’ soil) through creamy, powerful, and acid-rich wines. In 1987, Jermann released ‘Where Dreams Have No End,’ (a reference to the first song on U2’s The Joshua Tree album), a barrel fermented Chardonnay, now referred to, simply, as ‘Dreams.’ Made from 97% Chardonnay and 3% family secret, from vineyards grown in Farra d’Isonzo and Dolegna del Collio, It is a wine that lingers around for long. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel skipping malolactic, where it ages for 11 months on lees in used French 300L barrels. Dreams is an attractive and fresh wine exuding complex aromas of glazed lemon, apples and hazelnut. This is a full bodied wine, with a distinct freshness that makes it a favorite on the table for both demanding consumers and everyday occasions.

Moone Tsai 2022 Paige Cuvée Chardonnay

SRP $120 The Moone Tsai 2022 Paige Cuvée Chardonnay dazzles with its golden hue and captivating aromas of star jasmine, juicy pear, and Golden Delicious apple. PHAEDRA PARKS ON HER LIFE, LESSONS, AND LEGACY

Photo: Shots by ChaReese

Phaedra Parks is a woman of many layers. From her roots in law and entrepreneurship to her role as a cultural and social advocate, she has crafted a career as multifaceted as her personality. With a blend of unapologetic confidence, cutting-edge professionalism, and a heart full of compassion, Phaedra has built an empire that stretches from intellectual property law to funeral homes and even includes a reign on reality TV, starring on Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta. Behind the cameras and the headlines is a woman who is deeply committed to her family, her passions, and her mission to create lasting change.

In our candid conversation, Phaedra opens up about the hard-won lessons that have shaped her journey, the fine balance between ambition and self-care, and her hopes for the future. From breaking boundaries in the courtroom to redefining what success looks like, Phaedra’s wisdom is as bold and inspiring as her path.

You’ve built a successful career as a lawyer and entrepreneur. What inspired you to pursue these fields, and how have they shaped your journey?

“My specialty is in intellectual property and entertainment law and I saw a place where there were unrepresented people that the larger firms saw as ‘untouchable.’ I wanted to take the people that nobody wants. Entertainers who needed representation but didn’t quite present themselves well or truly did struggle in a professional setting – people who weren’t considered ‘fancy’ or ‘moral’ enough. These people need representation, too. I will take the people who are considered ‘the bottom of the barrel’ and make them multimillionaires and that’s what I did.

My law firm was never solely about the contract, it was about lifestyle management, too. Not only would I oversee the contract, but I would also set my clients up with a banker. Let’s set some goals. What does life look like after your career? My businesses have always been built on relationships and I deem those relationships as valuable… You have to surround yourself with people who have more, want more and are doing more than you. Relationships inspire you to be more and do more.”

You’ve ventured into multiple business endeavors, including a funeral home business. What motivated you to expand your professional portfolio beyond law?

“I’ve always been a person who would do the work for free if I was passionate enough about it. If you do something for free, then you learn how to master it for pay. Anything that I’ve fallen in love with, I figured out how to make it profitable for me. Before I moved to Atlanta to attend law school, I started researching the best cities to live in, cities where women could thrive, where people of color could thrive; Atlanta was one of those places. I came to Atlanta and I was willing to work hard and people gave me the opportunities.”

How do you balance your career with your personal life? Has this balance evolved over the years?

“I don’t know if there’s such a thing as truly having a balance. I think it is more so prioritizing what has to be done on that particular day. Being a mom has to be the first position… Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you prioritize what has to be done that day, then that eliminates the stress. You have to be realistic and humanistic about not getting everything done in one day. I’ve got to sleep. Wellness, self-care, and self-love are so important to me because I see so many people who have

sacrificed so much for a career. When you die, companies are going to continue to figure it out. You can’t figure out being a mother, you can’t figure out quality time with your parents. You have to recognize what is important. You can always make money. But you can’t always be present for a piano recital or an important event for people that you love. A job serves its purpose but it won’t be able to fulfill you to a full extent. The true meaning of life is not to collect things; it’s to have moments, it’s to have experiences. Things come and go, but moments are forever.”

“I live in gratitude. I believe that the only things that don’t change are seasons. I’ve definitely had seasons in my life where I had to toil, plant, and sow. Then, there were seasons where I was harvesting a bountiful harvest. You’re not going to always be the new, hot kid on the block, so when opportunities come, you have to be prepared. It is my ‘yes’ season. When you say ‘yes,’ the universe says ‘yes’ back. God has allowed the universe to say yes to me. The more I say yes, then the more things come to me. I have the ability to really work right now. I’m in work mode, so when I do have the opportunity to have free time, it is me and my kids. We love Japan. My youngest son likes to travel, so he’ll find things for us to do. I don’t believe in buying toys. I believe in experiences. You will remember going to another country and experiencing the food, and the culture, versus another toy that kills your ability to think independently. Let’s go to a different country or ride a train to another country. The sky’s the limit.”

Reality TV can sometimes blur the line between reality and performance. How do you manage the public’s perception of you versus who you really are?

“Television is for entertainment. If you’re not entertaining, then you have no value to your audience. Your character on TV is a personified part of you. I’ve always been over-the-top and I’ve always loved lavish things even as a child. The misperception is that people always assume that I’m not as nice as I am and so they’re thrown off when they find out that I’m very endearing. On TV, I can be portrayed as a person who can read you for filth, but if you look closely, I don’t bother anyone who doesn’t bother me. I’m not out here

being shady. I’m usually saying what’s pretty obvious and truthful. I like to make comical remarks. On Housewives, my biggest ‘reads’ have been comical; they’re not mean-spirited.”

You’ve been a strong advocate for criminal justice reform and other social issues. What changes would you like to see in the system, and how can everyday people contribute to those efforts?

“We have to really advocate in the justice system to make sure people aren’t being charged for minor offenses that ultimately affect their entire life. They can’t get into school, they can’t get a job, and they can’t get ahead because they’ve got this offense that is so minute but it keeps them from doing the things that they want to do because it stays with them for a lifetime. The decisions you make as a teenager shouldn’t always follow you forever… It shouldn’t put you in a category that allows people to discriminate because you had less than an ounce of marijuana charged against you, therefore, you are deemed untouchable or a drug addict. We have to talk about those things because people should be able to be redeemed and have a second chance. At 25, you are not the same person that you were at 15. At 30, you are not the same person you were at 20. If you see someone who is the same person, then that’s a problem because people should be evolving at all times and should be maturing. A bad choice as a teenager shouldn’t be held over your head. We need to talk about mandatory sentencing. The penal system has evolved with the culture. The educational system can be so focused on being politically correct that it does not address the needs of the community.”

You’ve always had a bold and confident persona. Where do you find inspiration for staying strong and true to yourself?

“Everyone is on their own journey. If God brings someone into my presence, I’ve got to be humble enough to recognize that person’s purpose because I don’t think anything is by accident. Everyone has their purpose and it can be seasonal. Some people come into your life to show you about yourself, show you something about them, teach you a new skill, and they might not be there forever, but you’ve got to recognize the purpose at that moment. We entertain angels every day.

Angels show up in all forms. People should always be humble enough to be open to receive. I’m a vessel. If you’re always in the same room and the same bubble, then you’ll always stay the same. You’ll never have an experience that can change the trajectory of your life. I thank God that I have always been open to new experiences because when you’re not open to new experiences then you will not evolve into anything different. If you tell me I’m the same person you knew from high school, that’s a problem with me. I should be very different, a changed woman.”

Chef SamuelssonMarcus

The celebrity chef/restaurateur talks about giving back

ByVanessaPascale
Advice for success
“”

You have to be both passionate about but also fascinated in the craft you’re in. Passion and joy can take you to a certain place, but you have to be fascinated. How is this environment changing? The fascination should be around the industry but also, what are you doing to be a part of that?

To be in the Old Fourth Ward is a big privilege with the history and with Martin Luther King’s house being a block away,” says Chef Marcus Samuelsson as we settle into a table inside his Atlanta-based restaurant, Marcus Bar & Grille.

Thoughtfully designed, the open-concept restaurant features a wood-fired grill and oven on display; garage doors that open onto a patio; and an old-school feel evoked with vinyl records and an artistic roller skates display – an ode to Atlanta’s roller skating culture. As we chat, we share a plate of deviled eggs, wings, and a wild mushroom taco.

The award-winning chef, who lives with his wife, Maya, and their children, Zion and Grace, in Harlem, New York (a few blocks from his office and the first restaurant he opened, Red Rooster Harlem) and has restaurants worldwide (New York, Miami, Ethiopia, Sweden, Bahamas, Montreal), had been asked to come to Atlanta for a long time, but always Buckhead. “With the history of our restaurants, we predominantly place them in African-American communities where we can create jobs. We wanted to start here in this community, similar to our Harlem restaurant. We have to start here and go to Buckhead later on.”

Opened in 2023, Marcus Bar & Grille serves “comfort food with a fun vibe.” Marcus intended for this to be an extension of Red Rooster Harlem. It was paramount for him to give his patrons an affordable dining experience that feels like a mirror of the city, which meant creating a team authentic to Atlanta. “Gary Caldwell [Marcus Bar & Grille’s executive chef] is such an amazing guy. He just won Chopped, so we’re very proud of him.” Together, Marcus and Gary have created a menu that showcases Marcus’ signature fare with a local twist. The menu features popular dishes like, M’s cornbread with whipped honey butter and maple syrup; grilled lamb chops served with chimichurri, and Southern fried catfish and grits.

For Marcus, owning restaurants is a privilege. “It’s a privilege to dialogue with the public. People come and eat and feel good. Maybe they go on a first date in your restaurant. Maybe they got married in your restaurant. You’re in peoples’ lives in a very specific moment, so I don’t ever take that for granted. It’s a joy, me getting to serve you.” While his restaurants are about his customers, and serving food inspired by his African and Swedish roots, they are also a vehicle for him to give “other marginalized people a chance.” “At Hav & Mar, we focus on women of color in leadership [a theme he aims to continue across all his restaurants]. Majority of the wine list is made by women of color…” Growing up, Marcus hadn’t seen women in leadership roles, and wanted to change this.

Passionate about giving back to his community, Marcus strives to be a resource for others, which is why his restaurants consistently host events and marketplaces. “It’s a privilege to work with a team that’s fully engaged. We travel to Europe, Africa, Ethiopia… We have our restaurant and school in Ethiopia; they learn hospitality. That’s a big purpose. Our restaurant [Marcus Addis] is on top of the tallest building in East Africa.” Having great mentors like late Chef Leah Chase and late Chef Charlie Trotter helped Marcus to grow as a person and a chef.

“Charlie Trotter mentored me for a long time. I got access to a lot of the events, a lot of the experience he did. And Ms. Leah Chase was always pushing me in terms of ambition and what’s possible; she was a true pioneer. Both of them came into my life early, and pushed me. And they were at the top of their careers.” Marcus met both chefs in his mid-20s, during a time he was being presented with myriad opportunities after becoming the youngest chef ever to receive three stars in The New York Times. These days, Marcus is proud to mentor many. “Most of the people I work with, they’re in their mid-20s to early 30s and they push me. I love it… But they also kick my ass everyday, it’s awesome,” he laughs. “I want to motivate.”

Because of his life experiences (Marcus was born in a hut in Ethiopia that he often returns to with his kids), he always comes from a place of gratitude. “I come from the poorest of the poor. Once you’re out of that, you will always be grateful for where you are. I had tuberculosis and almost died. My mom died, and then we got adopted [by a Swedish couple]. Once you’re out of that dramatic experience, the only way you can go is up.” Armed with the understanding that the world is an extremely competitive place, Marcus knew he had to work hard and focus in order to achieve what he wanted in life.

As a teenager, Marcus always thought he would be a soccer star. “I was traveling with a team and then that didn’t happen – only time when I really felt a crisis in terms of like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ I had no clue.” He redirected his energy, team-player mentality, and work ethic into cooking — a world that his Swedish grandmother introduced him to early on when they’d roll meatballs together. “The work ethic came somewhere really between my parents, grandparents, and soccer. It was just like playing sports. You need to be #1. OK, no problem! Just work harder than the other person and learn.”

He received scholarships and at 18, he moved to Japan and Switzerland, where he taught himself different languages, including French and German. “It was hard. I learned a ton. I came to the states when I was 23. I was a sous chef. Then, I became an executive chef. I wasn’t ready for it, but it happened. And like anything, you get a chance, you have two choices: You’re gonna swim or you’re gonna drown. Alright, let’s go! I’m blessed as an immigrant that people saw me and gave me chances. I knew I had to work hard to give it back to them. I’ve always been very appreciative. I have great mentors and always had people who believed in me, sometimes, even before I believed in myself, so that helped me.”

Today, Marcus is an accomplished chef and

“For me, it’s having a chance to cook in many places and engage many communities. I feel like we make it when we have, Fariyal Abdullahi [executive chef at Hav & Mar] and Sherry Cardoso [executive chef at Metropolis] in New York, two young women at the highest level, crushing it. [Majority of his executive chefs are women.] For me, it’s not about opening the restaurant, but what comes out of the restaurants. We have Gary here, he’s going to be a star chef. He’s learning right now. There’s many moments of making it, and there’s many failures… My success is based on the incredible support I got from my parents, they’re not around anymore, but no one does anything alone. That success is shared with my parents, my mentors, and my wife.”

When Marcus is not taking international business calls for his restaurants or at the restaurants collaborating with his chefs, he’s being a father and husband. “I get up pretty early, make breakfast for the fam… Maybe I’ll make sweet potato pancakes for the kids or waffles, a lot of fruits. Make their school lunch. Today, my son got a snapper sandwich. Roasted vegetables, roasted things he can eat with his hands. He loves crispy chicken. I’ll make it and put it in the freezer… I dip it in a grain flour. He can eat like any other 8-year-old, I just want it to be a little bit better, taking some sugars out, taking some trans fats out. I bike our daughter to school, which is always fun. Figure out what music we should listen to. She’s

3. ‘Shake it off’ by Taylor – such a good vibe.”

Now, Marcus is focused on his restaurants and thinking of what 2025 will bring. “That’s part of running a company, you’ve got to constantly be very much in the present, always grinding, always thinking of stuff that’s inspiring. You have to give something to the community. I’m deeply in love – the passion, the cooking of food, that, for me, the creativity and journey around that and the people I’m with on that journey always inspires me. This is what’s fun. When I wake up, this is what I’m thinking about – besides my family. I always said, the day I wake up and don’t think about this anymore, I’m done!”

Changing Paths

Arsema Thomas on stepping into her destiny

Arsema Thomas almost didn’t pursue acting.

“I would just be seething with jealousy. I was like, ‘That’s exactly what I want to do, but I’m too scared.” These are the feelings Arsema Thomas experienced when she would encounter drama school students during her time at Carnegie Mellon University and Yale, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics and master’s degree in Chronic Disease Epidemiology/ Public Health, respectively. “Because if I get rejected, I don’t know if I will handle that level of rejection from something I love so much.”

After graduating from Yale, Arsema took the plunge. She began auditioning for student films in NYC, completed Yale’s summer acting program, moved to Paris to study acting (in French and English), then was off to London for drama school. “When I look back on it, I’m like, ‘That was a lot!’ But sometimes, when you feel like you’re drawn to something, it feels like you have no other option, but to go.”

It’s a cold day in Atlanta – Arsema was born here and is visiting family – when the actress and I sat down for a couple of warming drinks (an almond milk latte for her and an Earl Grey tea for me) this past fall. Known for portraying young Lady Agatha Danbury in Netflix’s prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and playing lead, Mali, in Hulu’s film, She Taught Love, Arsema is making her rounds promoting the latter.

“I never thought I’d ever be the lead of a romantic love story, at least not now,” she says about receiving such a big opportunity so early in her acting career. Her IMDb lists four acting credits, including this one. “The stars really just aligned.”

She Taught Love began filming in January 2024 and was released in select theaters and on Hulu in September of that year. Arsema stars in this love story opposite Darrell BrittGibson, who is also the film’s writer. “There’s something really revolutionary about this film because I think you very rarely get to see people of color just living a human life, rather than living a life that is racialized.” Due to the film’s subject, Arsema has been meeting with cancer wards, specifically, women gynecologists, and oncologists to find the space where they all intersect, and how they can increase awareness and screenings and mammograms for women. “Putting that as part of our marketing has been one of the most enriching parts of it… It doesn’t have to be just a movie – it can be part of a movement… It feels like art, in the most truest, most idealistic way. With that guerilla-style filmmaking [the budget was around $2M], it’s like you go through the trenches with people and you come out with such a strong familial bond.”

She Taught Love is meant to be a part of a trilogy, like Before Sunrise… “I’ve been telling Darrell, ‘You need to write the second story now, because I love living in this world and these characters are so rich.’”

The stars really just aligned.” “

Arsema’s path to She Taught Love feels fated. And fate is something she wholeheartedly believes in. “I definitely believe that when something is supposed to happen, it will happen.” There are a number of serendipitous alignments that surround the project, from Arsema’s energetic connection with her on-screen parents to Darrell walking in on his mom seeing Arsema on TV and saying, “That’s the one!” for the heroine of his film.

“The day Darrell watched my self-tape, he’s like, ‘OK. Yes!’” Arsema adds that whenever Darrell previously found somebody to play Mali, his mom was like, “I don’t know if that’s it.” “That same day, his mother ended up watching episode 5 of Queen Charlotte, which is so much of me, so it was very, very strange. She was watching it and was like, ‘I think this would be the one.’ He walked into his house and saw me on the screen and was like, ‘Mom, that is the one.’ It’s insane!” Arsema goes on about the script, “When I read it, I was like, ‘This is me in every way.’ Her relationship with her father, I was like, ‘That is my father.’ When I met Edwin [Lee Gibson], who plays my father, I remember being like, ‘This man, I can feel my father’s energy somewhere.’ And I lost my father. We were like these two people who had this missing piece and it clicked so perfectly. This was meant to be.”

The Ivy-League grad, who grew up mostly in Africa as the daughter of diplomats, originally planned to go into the space of innovation and health – until she listened to her heart. “I would be memorizing lines for auditions while at my little cubicle [during her internship at the United Nations], I should not be here. I’m taking up somebody’s space who really wants to be here. Oh, I see, I just like to read about science, but I really love acting. And I always thought it was the other way around. The moment that came into perspective, I was like, This could not be any more clearer. I will be miserable if I don’t do this.”

So, what’s next for the West Hollywood transplant? “Currently, in the midst of talking about some projects here and there. Lots of small things happening. I’ve been taking dance classes. Ideally, it’d be lovely to be in some sort of Black Swan type of film, that would be the dream. I love dance. In another world, I would’ve been a ballerina, or some sort of contemporary dancer.”

BIG IDEAS FOR

SMALL SPACES

When most people think of backyard structures, their minds go to sheds full of old tools and forgotten knickknacks. But Sèverine Rigaud, founder of ELIKYA Studio, envisions backyard spaces as an opportunity to create something innovative and elegant – and it’s definitely not a shed.

“I wanted to create a space that people can use while also increasing the value of their homes,” Rigaud shares.

The name ELIKYA comes from the Lingala word for “hope,” which holds a special significance for Rigaud. Rigaud, who was born in France and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo (where Lingala is spoken), made hope the foundation of her business name.

“ELIKYA, for me, is to bring positivity into this crazy world. I believe if you spread love, opportunities, and accessibilities to people’s dreams, you can make their lives better,” she shares.

The journey to founding ELIKYA Studio in 2022 began with Rigaud’s travels around the world. “Bringing touches of European design elements into the studios creates something truly unique,” she says. This influence, combined with her collaboration with architect Bach Design Studio, led to the creation of a studio style that blends functionality and Scandinavian-inspired architecture to design Additional Dwelling Units, also known as ADUs.

“In Europe, there’s a lot of metal and wood combinations, so bringing that unique look—that blends with everything—really adds a luxurious touch,” she says.

Rigaud’s vision for ELIKYA Studio goes beyond the aesthetic appeal. Her mission is to offer practical, high-quality spaces that cater to diverse needs. The studios are meant to be versatile. Whether used for work, relaxation, or as a guest house, each studio is tailored to create an inviting and functional space.

“Whether you run a small business, have children, or need to care for a family member, ELIKYA Studio provides the freedom to simply cross your yard and focus on your work or occupation. Our studios can also serve as creative spaces, like a music or art studio, giving people control over their space,” Rigaud shares.

With studio options such as Studio I, Studio II, Studio II+, and the ADA-compliant Studio, ELIKYA Studio ensures accommodations for any lifestyle and need. Each studio, ranging from 121 sq ft to 256 sq ft, uses only highquality materials, and is built to last for years.

Rigaud highlights that the studios are specially constructed on-site and require no maintenance! They feature robust NewTechWood siding; all boards are wrapped with Ultrashield technology to ensure they do not fade or stain. This product gives a nice wood-look on the exterior, without the worry about staining the boards every year. It also includes standing seam metal roofing with a hidden fastening flange that locks out wind and water. Fixed tempered aluminum windows with commercial gray glass and black metal frames, paired with a patio door, complete the design, combining style with functionality.

“I invite everyone to stop by and visit the ELIKYA Studio office located on Technology Parkway at Curiosity Lab in Peachtree Corners. This model showcases the concept to completion of a custom-built studio offering a variety of options to fit your lifestyle,” Rigaud says.

Each studio comes fully insulated and climate-controlled as part of ELIKYA Studio’s turnkey installation process. ELIKYA Studio manages all aspects of the construction project, working only with insured and licensed general contractors and interior designers to maintain high standards while minimizing costs.

ELIKYA Studio reimagines what backyard spaces can be. As more people seek to maximize their property’s potential and create spaces for work or leisure, ELIKYA Studio is ready to turn your backyard dreams into reality.

“ELIKYA Studio is where creativity meets imagination, and that’s definitely not a shed in your backyard,” she laughs. And just to make her position crystal clear? Rigaud even bought the domain www.itsnotashed.com.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

980 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30306

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center takes backyard weddings to the next level. Dating back over 100 years, the 12-acre Druid Hills estate was originally built and owned by the Candler Family. Today, the home is an event space whose mission is to provide Atlanta with accessible arts education to the underserved. Beautifully framed by mature trees and florals, this 27,000-square-foot mansion is old-world craftsmanship at its best—featuring 12-foot ceilings, walnut floors and paneling, and a spiral staircase framed by a solid limestone archway that leads into the great hall. Outside, the fantasy only continues. There are terraces, a fountain, lush lawns, and formal gardens. By hosting your wedding here, you are not only making use of a gorgeous event space but also supporting 10+ art programs in the process.

42West

1088 Huff Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30318

Comprised of stunning industrial architecture, 42West has heart, not only in its beautiful framework—but in its mission as a business. Owned and founded by 30-year event veteran, Lauren Pelissier, 42West was constructed from a worn-down Westside warehouse. Now suited with details reminiscent of the 1940s, the space includes farmhouse tables, metal Tolix chairs and highstyled lounge furniture all beautifully framed by brick walls and iron and glass doors. Even outside, industrial aesthetics are still well-kept yet softened by massive trees that hang over the space and a tall, wooden plank and iron fence that surrounds the venue. To give back to her community, Pelissier graciously offers the space for free at least once a month —hosting 38 nonprofit events just in 2024.

Terminus 330

330 Marietta St NW, Atlanta, GA 30313

Terminus 330 is spectacularly on trend and was voted Atlanta’s Best Wedding Venue in 2024 for good reason. Separated into three spaces—The Main Space, The Cellar, and The Rooftop Terrace—each is equally as chic with its antiquated touch and is handicap accessible on all levels. The Main Space welcomes guests with a wrought iron entrance, leading into hardwoods, exposed brick, vaulted ceilings, and warm natural light. To top it off, a stunning mezzanine overlooks Atlanta’s historic railway; a sizable warming kitchen and private green room complete the space. The Cellar, a 1920s-inspired floor, charms with original stonework and vintage lighting that recalls the Prohibition Era. Located just beneath The Main Space, The Cellar features cozy lounge furniture, an oversized antique safe, and stone walls. Last but certainly not least, The Rooftop Terrace gives way to a dazzling panorama of the Atlanta skyline and the perfect dance floor for your guests.

Heaven A MatchMade in

Find the perfect dress at Wedding Angels Bridal Boutique

There’s a moment every bride dreams of— the instant she steps into the dress and just knows. At Wedding Angels Bridal Boutique, those moments happen every day, making it one of the most sought-after bridal destinations on the East Coast.

For boutique owner Jacquie Westney, that moment came in 2006 when she found her own wedding gown at Wedding Angels. Six months later, she left her corporate career to take over Wedding Angels Bridal Boutique, transforming it into a premier bridal destination known for its sincere celebration of brides and their love stories, unparalleled size inclusive selection, expert stylists, and a highly personalized shopping experience.

Once a small boutique with just two employees and three fitting rooms, Wedding Angels has grown into a thriving multi-location, size-inclusive bridal destination with over 40 team members and nearly 20 private suites across its Atlanta, GA, and Portland, ME locations. More than just a boutique, Wedding Angels is a place where every bride is celebrated, every moment is cherished, and every gown is chosen with intention.

From the moment a bride steps inside, she is welcomed into an experience that is both luxurious and deeply personal. With a belief that every bride—no matter her style, size, or price point—deserves a meaningful and joyful journey, Wedding Angels creates a space where she feels truly celebrated. A dedicated stylist guides her through a curated selection of gowns, while loved ones await in a private bridal suite, ensuring that every reveal of a gown option feels intimate, effortless, and entirely her own.

Each gown at Wedding Angels is thoughtfully selected, striking a balance between timeless sophistication and modern bridal trends. Jacquie and her team meticulously curate each collection, drawing inspiration from global fashion runways, red carpet moments, and the ever-evolving world of bridal design.

“We select gowns based on what we’re seeing on the runway, a lot of red-carpet influences. And then we project those trends, and we watch as it comes from that inspiration level of fashion into more of a readyto-wear; and then we see it next coming into bridal.”

A lover of iconic style, Jacquie often nods to the timeless elegance of style icons and reimagines their influence for the modern bride as trends re-emerge. At the moment- with so many clean and classic bridal trends, style inspiration might come from someone like Jackie Kennedy Onassis, incorporating refined details like pearls, gloves, and structured silhouettes into styling a bride.

“The Jackie O classic, timeless elegance is definitely something fun we’re playing with. Jacquard fabrics on gowns, pearls everywhere-even on veils and gloves,—right now, that’s a look our brides can’t get enough of and we’re absolutely loving it!”

This dedication to artistry is reflected in Wedding Angels’ latest collections—hundreds of hand-selected gowns sourced from top bridal fashion weeks in Miami and Chicago. The newest designs highlight

Chantilly lace, sculpted bodices, architectural silhouettes, and statement elements like oversized bows and voluminous ruching—trends that are redefining modern bridal fashion.

“We’re still seeing incredibly dif erent versions of really, really clean gowns. Just exquisite fabrics, and maybe some sort of structural design element like a tuxedo folded necklineline or a giant architectural bow. We also just saw all of the collections in Miami and Chicago-we saw some fun new features like pickups, color belts, pastel florals and a lot of volume in ballgowns! We can’t wait to add these to our current collections!”

For brides looking for a “second dress”—a sleek, stylish option for their reception or rehearsal dinner—the boutiques offer a curated selection of fashion-forward designs, allowing for a second unforgettable moment.

Wedding Angels offers more than just bridal gowns, with a carefully curated collection of formalwear for mothers and grandmothers, ensuring they feel just as radiant on such an important day. To complete the look, the boutique also carries an exquisite selection of bridal accessories, making every finishing touch effortless and elegant.

At its core, Wedding Angels is built on connection, passion, and the belief that every bride should feel welcome, valued, and beautiful. With over 800 sample gowns to choose from, a warm and experienced team, and a reputation for celebrating brides of all styles, backgrounds, and love stories, it’s no wonder that generations of women have trusted Wedding Angels for their most unforgettable moments.

“We believe that everyone should be able to have the Wedding Angels experience. We try to have something for almost every bride, whatever her inspiration could be, whatever her price point is, whatever her size is... That’s our passion.”

Personalization The Art Of

Make Your Wedding Uniquely You

Luxury weddings are becoming dazzling, multi-sensory experiences that allow couples to showcase their individuality and love stories. At Atlanta’s most talkedabout celebrations, personalization eclipses tradition. Here are some of the trends I’m seeing around Metro Atlanta.

Multi-Day Matrimony

Multi-day affairs, packed with immersive experiences reflecting couples’ interests, are trending over your typical 1-day wedding celebration. Themed cocktail parties and adventurous excursions, like hiking or wine tastings, are woven into weekend-long events filled with custom touches.

Fashion Forward

Today, brides are opting for multiple couture looks for their ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception with styling to match. Couples invite guests to “transformation rooms” filled with themed accessories, staffed glam stations, and temporary body art.

Cocktail Flights or Tasting Menus

A curated cocktail journey or thoughtfully crafted tasting menu transforms a wedding into a multi-sensory adventure for guests. Each sip and bite can be a chapter of a couple’s love story, told through perfectly paired flavors, surprising textures, aromatic scents, and artistic presentation.

Masterpiece Moments

Couples are enlisting artists to create live paintings of their first dance and grand entrance. Sculptors are designing custom installations that double as décor. Tech-savvy couples are commissioning digital NFT portraits as modern heirlooms. These interactive art experiences elevate the event’s aesthetic and give couples, and often guests, oneof-a-kind mementos.

Grand Entrances

Couples are bringing luxe energy to their arrival at the ceremony. Think yacht or hot air balloon! Horseback processions bring regal energy to countryside weddings, while luxury cars offer a sleek, modern vibe to city-based celebrations. Grand entrances set the tone, making the exchange of vows feel more like a scene from the couple’s favorite movie than a typical wedding procession.

When every detail reflects the couple’s style and passions, their wedding becomes a singular, never-before-experienced event.
