LETTER FROM THE DEAR READER,

“THE WAY YOU DO ONE THING IS THE WAY YOU DO EVERYTHING.”

I came across that line recently, and it stopped me in my tracks. It brought me back to a job I had in college, when I worked in a restaurant. Every afternoon, before the doors opened, the owner would spend nearly an hour writing out the daily specials on a chalkboard. Her handwriting was immaculate, with sketches and puns to match the mood of the day. She could have typed it up in minutes and saved the time, but she never did.

At first, I thought it was unnecessary. But over time, I realized it mattered. The board wasn’t about the menu; it was about setting the tone. If that much care went into a detail most guests barely noticed, you knew the same care would show up in the food, the service, the entire experience.

It may not be possible to do everything perfectly. But it is possible to do many things perfectly. And precision in small things has a way of translating into bigger ones.

That’s what we’ve tried to do with this issue of VUE. Every story comes from firsthand experience. Michael’s journey through China’s Gansu Province, Hayley’s favorite finds in the capital of Florida, and my own trip to Santa Barbara on the new non-stop flights from Atlanta. We’re also proud to share Seth van den Bergh’s award-winning Milton Manor project, a collaboration nearly a year in the making. And Charly Palmer’s feature, originally planned for summer, wasn’t ready then. We waited, refined, and the result is one of my favorite pieces we’ve ever published.

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that shape the biggest impressions.

Best regards,

“PEOPLE WILL FORGET WHAT YOU DO; THEY’LL FORGET WHAT YOU SAID. BUT THEY’LL NEVER FORGET HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.”

DEAR READER,

Where did the time go? Summer has slipped away, and just like that, we’re stepping into my favorite season here in Atlanta, fall. There’s something about this time of year that always feels like a reset. The air grows cooler, the days a little shorter, and suddenly we find ourselves ready to slow down and savor what’s around us. And with every change of season comes a brand-new issue of VUE, one I am especially excited to share with you.

This fall, our pages are filled with stories that stretch from the beachy shores of Santa Barbara to the blooming vibrancy of Florida’s capital. VUE certainly scored some serious sky miles putting this issue together.

Every trip, feature, and detail reflects the same sense of curiosity and care that goes into crafting each issue. Within these pages, you’ll find a memorable dining experience at Il Premio, the magic of our Summer Soirée at Gianine’s beautiful home, and a glimpse into the historic charm of Hotel Granada.

I’M SO GLAD I LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THERE ARE OCTOBERS.
–L.M.

MONTGOMERY

And, of course, we go Beyond the Gates with realtor Debra Johnson as she opens the doors to a stunning Buckhead estate, a home that radiates timeless elegance and offers readers a glimpse into the artistry of design.

Each feature in this issue was chosen to capture the spirit of exploration, celebration, and style that defines the fall season. My hope is that as you turn these pages, you’ll not only be transported to new places but also inspired to rediscover the beauty of your own surroundings. After all, fall is about more than just transition; it’s about reflection and finding joy in both the grand moments and the subtle details.

All the best,

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER AT GIANINE MCKENNA’S HOME

On August 14, VUE Atlanta celebrated the end of summer with our exclusive Endless Summer Soirée, hosted at the stunning home of cover star, Gianine McKenna. After days of stormy skies, the evening cleared for a perfectly luminous night.

Guests arrived at a red-carpet entrance flanked by striking Ferraris, and stepped into a fête adorned with vibrant floral arrangements. Poolside, under the stars, guests sipped signature cocktails and basked in the energy of sophistication and summer glamour.

The soirée also supported a meaningful cause, raising awareness and funds for the Ferrari Atlanta Rides to Remember Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for Cure Childhood Cancer, Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Camp Sunshine.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all who made the evening so memorable, from our partners and contributors to the VUE community, your presence and support helped make this celebration truly exceptional.

THE MOST

IN PRODUCTION

In the world of luxury watches, few dare to redefine what a watch can be. But the Franck Muller Aeternitas Mega 4 doesn’t just push boundaries, it obliterates them.

With 1,483 meticulously crafted components and 36 complications, the Aeternitas Mega 4 is one of the most complex wristwatches ever made. It is also the most expensive watch in production. Its engineering shows the incredible talent of the watchmakers who designed it. From the visible tourbillon and split-seconds chronograph to the secular perpetual calendar accounting

for leap years every 100 and 400 years, every element shows careful attention to detail.

Housed in an 18K white gold case and powered by a dual-motor automatic mechanism, this watch isn’t just made, it’s composed, like a symphony. The crown jewel of this watch is a Westminster Grande Sonnerie. A chiming complication that plays on the hour and quarter-hour. A waterproof push-button placed at the 10:30 mark lets you command this sonata with effortless precision.

But beyond complexity, the Aeternitas Mega 4 is a beautiful piece. The handsewn alligator strap, sun-stamped lacquered dial, and Côtes de Genève finish prove this to be the culmination of the Aeternitas project.

More than a watch, the Aeternitas Mega 4 is a wearable monument, a $2.7 million masterpiece (estimated retail) reserved for those who don’t just measure time, but master it.

Gorgeous Buckhead estate is a dreamy escape from city life

Pass through double-gates and traverse a substantial driveway, and you will find one of Buckhead’s grandest estates. This brick residence stands opulently among towering trees and the most expansive, verdant grounds; it is the epitome of luxury, tranquility, and privacy.

“What sets it apart is the privacy and retreat feel of the estate. The current homeowners purchased the lot next door and combined the two lots together creating a park-like feeling and more privacy. The total acreage is 2.3 acres,” says realtor, Debra Johnston.

The front of the residence showcases a 3-car garage, porte-cochere, and oversized forecourt looking out onto a flowing fountain. Built in 2006 by Tony Reaves, Intown Builders, and Harrison Design architects, the two-story residence boasts both traditional and European features, including exceptional brick and stone work and coveted copper gutters. A stately columned entryway and double doors welcome guests into the house, where soaring 10-12-foot ceilings, wide plank reclaimed hardwoods, and stone flooring create drama and warmth.

Every inch of the house showcases superior craftsmanship, from the six impressive masonry fireplaces and custom-designed chef’s kitchen appointed with gorgeous Calacatta gold marble countertops, custom Karpaty cabinetry, Wolf appliances and double Sub-Zero refrigerator to the inviting family room featuring a brick barrel ceiling. An abundance of windows and doors bathe the residence in warm, natural lighting and deliver enviable views of the lush landscaping.

This exceptional 13,422-square-foot residence houses seven bedrooms (two primary bedroom suites on each floor and four en suite bedrooms upstairs, or you can take the elevator), and several spacious rooms, including a study, finished terrace level with bar, home theater, gym, billiards room, and game room. There is also more than enough space to further tailor the home to your needs; create a state-of-the-art gym with a sauna or add a golf simulator.

“Most of the house and property has been renovated and upgraded within the last ten years and is in superior condition. Upgrades include, all new systems featuring Control 4 for lighting, music, security, and a whole-house generator. All new landscaping and redesigned double pool with a 42-foot slide,” shares Debra.

Outside is a dreamy, lush sanctuary with manicured walking paths winding throughout the property, a well for watering the landscape, a gorgeous pool and spa, covered kitchen, fireplace, and patios off of the living room, family room, and kitchen. Perfect for lavish alfresco fêtes, intimate sunset dinners, and quiet nights in, the magnificent outdoor space encourages you to bask in nature’s infinite beauty and breathe in the fresh air.

The expansive property can easily accommodate the addition of a guest house, tennis court, pickleball court, or extra garages. This truly is a property where the sky’s the limit. "The exceptional quality of this residence combined with the acreage and landscape uniquely create an experience perfect for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation," says Debra.

Listing Price: $5,900,000.

SETH VAN

DEN

BERGH

TRANSFORMS MILTON MANOR INTO A SPACE AS POWERFUL AS ITS RESIDENTS.

A yellow silk wallcovering, adorned with hand-painted butterflies, creates a striking vista and a true sense of arrival into the owner’s suite. In the breakfast room, beneath David Yarrow’s evocative photograph, a custom banquette by The Drawing Room balances luxury with intimacy.

"THERE’S A DESIRE FOR A LITTLE BIT OF THEATRICS."

“We like to create experiential spaces,” says Seth van den Bergh, noting that this is his company’s tagline. The founder-creative director-interior designer of The Drawing Room ATL is the brilliant visionary behind some of Georgia’s most extraordinary design metamorphoses, including ATLAS’ (Buckhead’s Michelin-starred restaurant) dreamy custom installation featuring 3,000 blue butterflies.

Most recently, Seth’s work on the manor spanning these pages garnered him an award from the American Society of Interior Designers for new construction over 5,000 square feet. The magnificent residence will also appear in the coffee table book, “Urban Sanctuaries,” slated for release in September 2025. “This isn’t the Ralph Lauren of homes; this is Schiaparelli. There’s a desire for a little bit of theatrics,” says Seth, who studied interior design in Dubai.

Early on, Seth and his clients – a high-power, entrepreneurial husband and wife–established an aesthetic characterized as international, referencing boutique hotels, locations in Singapore, and projects in Russia. Apart from much of the art, which came from the couple’s collection, everything was carefully curated. This home doesn’t rely on eclectic layers; it thrives on clarity. Each curated item feels like a statement piece on a runway. Their space is bold, coordinated, and designed to exist in this unforgettable moment. It offers them both escapism and relaxation; a retreat where they can truly unwind, as the space reflects them so well.”

Seth characterizes his style as modern and more avant-garde, which aligns with the couple’s taste. “I do really well with clients who know who they are and aren’t afraid to be bolder and are willing to challenge the norm.” This powerhouse couple embodies that completely. The unique design elements infused into this 10,000-square-foot residence reflect the client’s fashion sense, progressive ideas, and bold personalities.

Because Seth and his team were involved in this project so early on, they were able to reshape the space to truly fit the client’s lifestyles. “By the time we came on board,

Anchored by deep greys and blacks, bold icons —a Gaetano Pesce lounge chair and fire-engine-red Seiler piano— bring striking contrast to the owner's art-filled home.

the foundation was poured and the framing stood in place. Though it began with the DNA of a spec home, we re-scripted the flow of the plans so it became not just custom-built, but custom-designed. Every decision from there forward was about aligning the architecture with the rhythm of its owners’ lives.” In addition to reimagining rooms and reconfiguring the kitchen (it was divided into four intentional zones and outfitted with a massive island with a lower portion serving as a pedestal for the client’s porcelain vase), Seth eliminated approximately 37 windows from the original design plans and created an elevated staircase appointed with LED lighting, custom wood detail, a glass railing, and a hand-wrapped leather railing. “We turned the dial up on it and enhanced something that would’ve been ordinary.”

Seth masterfully weaved the client’s favorite colors –black, red, grey, yellow–into the design and created a dramatic, luxe effect with yellow lacquer on the portals of the two main corridors. “We didn’t go crazy with patterns; the grey becomes the neutral.” Every room was thoughtfully curated to include a mélange of shapes, textures, and textiles to stimulate the senses. Sculptural pieces (the tables, the seating, the lighting, the ottomans, the art) play a pivotal role within this imaginative space. “I’m drawn to furniture that feels sculptural. Each piece has the strength to stand on its own and command space.” The living room features the iconic red, bulbous chair by Gaetano Pesce, while the primary bedroom is appointed with a unique Hem chair. “It’s deceptively simple. A steel frame with padded upholstery that spills over, creating a plump,

playful, and inviting chair by the fireplace,” Seth explains about the latter.

“Each gesture is a salute to fashion at its height and design at its finest.”

Seth’s keen eye for design transcends interiors and includes furniture.

“We’re furniture designers –that reinforces that idea: We’re not going to give you what your neighbor has because everything we do is a little more tailored.” Artful and functional, the custom pieces he created for this space include the Henning dining table (named for the 1970s Canadian magician Doug Henning), two yellow glass Abacus side tables, rugs, and a built-in banquette in the breakfast room.

“Part of what makes an experiential space theatrical is the immersion in it. The fact that the glass activates when you’re sitting at it and turns color–it

DESIGNER'S FAVORITE ROOM

I love how the media room came together. We embraced black on black, creating a cocoon of color with a sleek, custom Italian leather sectional and thoughtfully curated art. What makes it special is that it doesn’t fall into the cliché of a media room. It is elevated and seductive, a space with real sex appeal. At the same time, it’s not precious. It’s fully functional, lived in, and still undeniably beautiful.

Painted in Sherwin Williams Black Magic, the media room’s custom sectional imported from Italy, luxe textures, and black calla lilies set a cinematic stage for modern living and movie watching.

becomes a kinetic piece of art,” says Seth about his light-reactive Henning dining table. “Rather than doing one long table, we split it with a small, intimate square at the end. They can sit there and have a smaller meal without being at a table for 12, which can be a little off-putting.” A kaleidoscope of Baccarat crystal butterflies rest atop the table. “All the butterflies (a collab with Neiman Marcus) are scribed with the names of the friends of the couple, welcoming them to their house, kind of like a guest book.”

Wildlife is a recurring theme throughout the home. Ethereal butterflies (which additionally appear on a gold chandelier and single-panel yellow silk handpainted wallpaper) are juxtaposed with fierce felines. “Wild cats are definitely her thing.” The primary bedroom is appointed with David Yarrow’s majestic lion photograph, Catwalk; a photograph of a panther hangs above the breakfast table; and Claire Rosen’s The Cheetah Feast fittingly resides in the dining room.

Seth started this project in early January 2023 and brought it to completion in August 2024. “The move unfolded with cinematic precision,” Seth recalls. “One evening they were in

their condo, and the next they were stepping into a home completely transformed. Music drifted through the rooms, candles flickering, champagne poured, and every last detail styled, from the furniture to the placement of the Krug and Louis XIII on the shelves. Every detail was thought of, and every detail mattered in making this transition seamless. To anyone watching, it looked effortless, but behind the scenes, it took tremendous planning and coordination. A few years ago, Modern Luxury recognized us with an award for our concierge design service, and I think that’s what sets us apart. We don’t simply copy designs and place orders. The Drawing Room takes pride in the level of whiteglove service and personalized care. Everything was placed, labeled, and ready for them to begin living in their truly customized home. What we do is about helping people uncover more of who they are. Atlanta’s design scene is evolving, and I want to see it embrace more risk. For clients who are curious, who want to push past the familiar, The Drawing Room is excited to take them on that journey.”

In the owner’s suite, a floating Lago bed, jeweled with quartz-crystal–knobbed nightstands, rests against lacquered panels and a Parisian mirror. Draped in a chinchilla throw and framed by bespoke details, the room is a study in unapologetic luxury.

“THIS ISN’T THE RALPH LAUREN OF HOMES; THIS IS SCHIAPARELLI.”

Santa Barbara Dreaming

Get away to the West Coast

Imagine having the best of both worlds: a place where majestic mountains meet pristine beaches- a visual dream, surrounded by endless natural beauty. Lucky for you, that dream isn’t out of reach. Santa Barbara, California, offers the perfect blend of both, and now, with daily direct flights from Atlanta, there’s never been a better time to explore the West Coast.

(Some even say it’s the best coast, but you’ll have to be the judge of that!)

To ensure a perfect stay, position yourself in the heart of downtown at the fantastic 5-star Hotel Californian. With a prime location that offers easy access to the city’s top spots, it’s the ideal choice for a luxury getaway. (And yes, you’ll probably catch yourself humming that Eagles song when checking in.) You’ll enjoy surreal views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains- all while staying in one of the city’s most vibrant areas: the “Funk Zone.”

Don’t worry, it doesn’t actually smell funky. The affectionate name stuck over time, especially since this neighborhood was once the industrial, marine, and manufacturing part of town. While it still has some old-school charm with the buildings and the fishermen here, the neighborhood has transformed into a lively, artsy district filled with great galleries, wineries, restaurants, shops, and more. These days, “funk” refers to the creative transformation of old warehouses into trendy spaces.

This is the perfect city to explore new, local spots to eat and drink downtown or at the beach. Some standouts include San Setto for fresh sushi at The RitzCarlton; Loquita for mouthwatering Spanish cuisine; Blackbird at Hotel Californian; Clark’s Oyster Bar in Montecito; and the Ellwood at Goleta Beach for oceanfront cocktails and a stellar sunset view. And that’s just the beginning -the city is packed with even more incredible restaurants and bars you’re sure to love.

Santa Barbara is also famous for its wineries, earning the nickname “The American Riviera” thanks to its Mediterranean-like climate, coastal charm, and Spanish-influenced architecture. This unique environment helps make the local wines, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, truly shine. Don’t miss tasting rooms like Margerum Wine Company, Folded Hills, and the Bacara Wine Tasting Room. Of course, there are many more to explore, and it’s hard to go wrong in a region so rich in winemaking.

There’s something for every type of vacationer- history buffs, outdoor adventurers, art lovers, those looking to unwind, or people who simply want to explore a new city. There’s so much to do and see. Another bonus? The city is incredibly dog-friendly, so bring your furry friends along for the fun.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the possibilities are endless. Paddleboarding, hiking, sunset cruises, and birdwatching are just a few ways to take in the natural beauty. Visit parks and gardens such as Casa del Herrero or the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, or play a round of golf at one of several championship courses, including Sandpiper Golf Course. If your version of “outdoorsy” is wandering the city, check out local landmarks like Stearns Wharf and Santa Barbara Harbor, where you’ll get a perfect mix of nature and city life.

And for those who love a little culture, there’s no shortage of places to explore. Visit MOXI: The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation for interactive, hands-on exhibits, the historic Old Mission Santa Barbarathe tenth of California’s 21 missions- or check out the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum or the Museum of Natural History. No matter your style, there’s plenty to do and see.

If you’ve already visited Santa Barbara and find yourself thinking, “Been there, done that,” consider staying at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara. This tucked-away hotel is perfect for those who have already explored the city and want spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to its 5-star reputation, the hotel offers something truly unique at the spa: an Aescape AI massage. What’s that? It’s a massage that blends artificial intelligence with robotic arms to provide a personalized experience following a 3D body scan. This high-tech treatment is certainly worth trying.

Santa Barbara has something for everyone. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, it’s the perfect place to discover the magic of the West Coast. In the world of bespoke tailoring, a suit is never just a suit, it’s a canvas, and the man who wears it is the artist. Master tailors, Fitz Constantin and Dustin Smith, who curate for luxury fashion brand, Phillip Grandison, craft looks that transform classic tailoring into something unforgettable.

At Phillip Grandison, every garment displays superior craftsmanship. This is where the art of styling meets the craft of tailoring; it’s a balance of heritage and personal flair. This isn’t just about wearing a suit, it’s about personalizing it. Whether it’s the quiet confidence of a silk pocket square, the rakish charm of an open collar, or the statement of a daring shoe, every choice shifts the narrative.

Phillip Grandison tailoring offers endless ways to redefine what it means to suit up. Here are a few standout combinations and tips from Fitz and Dustin to elevate your style.

SIGNATURE LOOKS

CLASSIC WITH A TWIST: A brown herringbone Phillip Grandison suit paired with a blue-striped shirt and paisley tie exudes heritage with personality.

BOLD CONTRAST: A green pinstriped suit with a pink shirt and navy tie turns tradition on its head and makes it look effortless.

MINIMALIST EDGE: A black tailored suit paired with a clean striped tie offers understated confidence.

SHARP STRUCTURE: A double-breasted blazer in dark charcoal makes a commanding impression for more formal affairs.

ACCESSORIZE WISELY: Add a silk pocket square or floral boutonniere for a polished look with quiet flair.

PATTERN PLAY: A plaid or checked jacket allows you to lean into print without losing elegance.

REFINE THE LOOK

PLAY WITH TEXTURE: Pair a wool or worsted suit with a silk scarf or soft cashmere overcoat to build rich layers

ELEVATE WITH ACCESSORIES: A bold pocket square, tie bar, or unique cufflinks can instantly shift the vibe from boardroom to cocktail hour.

MASTER THE ART OF LAYERING: Swap the dress shirt for a fine knit turtleneck, or add a tailored waistcoat for depth and intrigue.

BEST FOOT FORWARD: Opt for oxfords when tradition calls, velvet loafers for evening luxury, and monk straps to make a more daring statement.

REFINE THE SILHOUETTE: Experiment with double-breasted cuts, cropped jackets, and cuffed trousers for visual interest.

COMMAND WITH COLOR & PATTERN: Introduce subtle plaids, tonal stripes, and rich jewel tones to bring a bespoke edge to your rotation.

The perfect suit doesn’t just fit your frame, it fits your story. With Phillip Grandison, every stitch, pattern, and accessory becomes a signature of who you are.

The Authentic Alchemist

Charly Palmer stands as one of contemporary art's most compelling voices, weaving together Southern heritage, spiritual practice, and unflinching social commentary across a distinguished career spanning over three decades. Born in Alabama and shaped by summers spent with family in the Deep South, Palmer's artistic vision is deeply rooted in ancestral wisdom and the African American experience. His work transcends mere aesthetic beauty, serving as both historical documentation and prophetic commentary—much like the jazz legends he admires, from Charles Mingus to John Coltrane, whose innovations remained ahead of their time yet eternally relevant.

Investing in artists like Palmer means more than acquiring beautiful objects, it means supporting truth-tellers who channel spiritual energy into visual narratives that challenge, heal, and inspire. Palmer's approach to art as a vessel for ancestral voices and social awakening demonstrates why collecting work by living artists is crucial—each piece becomes a tangible connection to pivotal moments in cultural history. When collectors support artists who fearlessly address systemic issues while celebrating Black excellence and resilience, they participate in preserving and amplifying essential stories that might otherwise be overlooked. Palmer's intentional focus on uplifting his community through art exemplifies how supporting diverse artists enriches not just personal collections, but the broader cultural conversation.

You were born in Alabama and grew up in Wisconsin. How did being born in The South influence your creativity?

“I think that, in general, it may go all the way back to slavery. Our roots are strong as African Americans and in the South. It has always been this sense of coming home to all of these negative things that have taken place and continue to take place but it's always felt like home for me. In fact, being born in Alabama, and then spending every summer, until I was 14 years old, with my cousins and my grandparents, I always had an affinity/ connection to it. So, I’m rooted in the South. That's why I intentionally, when it came to my career later on, wanted to go back south.”

You are a renowned artist with a career spanning over three decades. Why did you decide to stay in Atlanta versus other cities like New York or Los Angeles? What charm does this city have that you cannot find elsewhere?

“[Atlanta] feels enough like the South that I can accept it. I see growth, I see success, I see Black people moving in ways I've never seen anywhere else. But, with not so much of the hustling, nonstop movement you might see in New York. I've seen in the place that I came from in Milwaukee, Wisconsin there were some successful Black people but many almost accepted an attitude of defeatism. That you're never going to succeed. I was just not of that mentality. I was very much about, ‘If it's not here in Milwaukee, it's somewhere and I'm going to see where that is.’ Honestly, what brought me to Atlanta initially, was when the Olympics came. When the Olympics came, I'm like, ‘I want to be a part of this. I don't know how, but I'm going to be a part of it.’ I think if I had spent too much time trying to figure out how it was going to happen, I probably would never have gone.”

Let's talk more about your approach to art. Are you a flow of consciousness artist or do you approach each canvas with intention?

“Honestly, there's a spirit part of everything that I do. It becomes more of a challenge when I'm doing commission work or if I'm doing a children's book or something because there are times when I'm creating something that is pulling me in a certain direction and I've learned as a creative person sometimes to go in that direction. But, there are

times when the client might not connect with that or understand that or want to revise. The longer I'm on this earth, the more I've determined to go with the Spirit. There is also the necessity of having some background understanding and that's why I'm such an advocate of getting an education because the more you know, the more you can challenge.”

It's important to incorporate rest into your life especially as an artist, especially as someone working with the Spirit, do you have a wellness practice to help sustain your creative vision?

“I do and I do terrible at practicing it simply because I'm constantly moving. I'm constantly doing something even when I don't have to because it's just been the nature of me. What I'm enjoying right now is where my wife and I go to every year. We're in a very quiet peaceful place around woods, trees, and the wind is blowing right now and it's just peaceful and it almost forces you to be still. For me, it's hard but with this time it's like I go back to Atlanta rejuvenated. I go back ready to take on the craziness of this world. When we come to the Vineyard, we've stepped out of that world of constant pace. We truly recognize the blessing of being able to experience this. And we're often saying that we want more of our family and friends to come and see this and feel this and experience this. Because what they've heard is an experience, something you can really see, it's something that I promise you will feel and we feel very connected to our ancestors here.”

How do you encourage others to tend to their mental health and is this necessary to serve as an artistic vessel?

“I absolutely feel that this is definitely necessary. I think when you are a creative person, whether you're a writer, musician, a visual artist, or a dancer, you are your best self when you get out of your way, and you acknowledge that there's an energy flowing through you. That's the ancestors. Those are your people. The spirit is when the best stuff comes out and I've learned that the hard way but fortunately, I've been practicing that for over 20 years now and I'm still in awe at some of the things that come through me. But it's all very necessary to be grounded. With a friend of mine, we talk about it all the time, he would say try to take your shoes off and go out there in the yard and touch a tree or embrace a tree. It grounds you and there are scientific studies proving that energy is real. It's so necessary. And it's so weird when you

think about it, I would say most of the people in this world, most of the people in this country, don't do that. It's like they don't touch the soil or the grass or the trees and I'm learning that with the times going on that is such a necessary part of being authentic, being real, and giving your best self.”

In the past, you've paired your work with American iconography, how does this extend beyond propaganda?

“Propaganda has a negative connotation to me. This is truth. It's like, even in The Matrix, it's this idea that when you are awake intentionally or when you choose the red pill, you begin to see the world, and every aspect of the world differently. I'm never going to suggest or imply that I'm more awake. But, it is true that being obedient to the Spirit you're going to produce things that, at times, do not even make sense to you but it makes sense to

the whole or people are moved and will connect to it. But, they may not connect to it for ten years. I'm always referencing someone like Charles Mingus, jazz legend, that was ahead of his time. When someone's ahead of their time, whether it's a Basquiat or a Charlie Parker or John Coltrane, it's something that could be visited ten years later and it's still fresh and new. Stevie Wonder's ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ is still fresh and new because they tapped into some truth. That is the awareness of being aware. Stevie Wonder addressed, in ‘Living for the City,’ police treatment towards the black body 40 years ago. It's not new and most of these things out there aren't new. When Black people slow down and start to pay attention to their surroundings, they become aware of things that have always been there.”

Is there a defining moment that keeps you in pursuit of your creative endeavors even when you are exhausted?

“My wife asked me the other day, ‘When was the last time you enjoyed painting?’ and I've been moving so quickly, it didn't dawn on me that it's been a minute. It's been a minute because I've been on deadline. I've been working, working, working, trying to finish this work for this show or trying to finish this children's book. It's like now I'm just like a producing art machine and I've lost the life and the joy of it. Which goes back to one of your earlier questions, I have intentionally paused from painting. This may seem like nothing, but I haven't painted in three weeks. That’s understanding that I paint almost every day. I got to the point where, at times, I get uncomfortable and feel I should be painting. But no, when it comes to the idea of intentionality, I won't paint until I clearly know what the next message is going to be. So, that doesn't mean I haven't been writing or making notes of concepts and ideas but until I say, ‘I know,’ I won't go back to the canvas.”

On your website, you note that you are a self-proclaimed extremist when it comes to the love of Black people. Why is it important to channel African ancestry through your art in a multiracial world?

“There’s a book that I'm really pushing called Sky Full of Elephants by Cebo Campbell. What I love about this book is it poses a question and it’s not something that anybody, other than Black people, has to think about. Who and what would you do and be different if there were no white people? Sometimes, we use that as an excuse for our failures. If you were given the freedom to not have to think about the white gaze and anything you're doing and just be. What would you do with that?

The Battle for the Black Mind by Karida Brown

Would you be very intentional about your community and doing things that way? Or how would you move? That book really had me spending a lot of time with that. My daughter, when she was about 14 once said, ‘You hate white people!’ And I said, ‘No, sweetie, I don't. What I do is I love Black people with all of my energy. To spend time hating, it's a waste of my energy and it takes too much work. So, I try to focus all my energy on the upliftment, the inspiration, the love and the protection of Black people. With no apologies. I don't want anybody else to feel left out. My focus is Black people and what can I do to better us. I’m very intentional about that. I think I have every right to be very intentional about us.”

Atlanta is constantly raising the bar for its dining scene. For those seeking standout luxury experiences, finding the right reservation can feel like a challenge. That's where we come in. This season, we turn our attention to Il Premio, an elegant ItalianAmerican newcomer that's already making waves in the heart of the city.

Located inside the sleek new FORTH Hotel in Old Fourth Ward, Il Premio combines elevated cuisine, warm interiors, and impeccable service to create an alluring destination for both locals and visitors. Whether you're staying at the hotel or simply stopping in for dinner, Il Premio offers an experience that feels worth celebrating.

Il Premio takes its name from the Italian word for “the prize,” a nod to the Palio di Siena, the legendary race horse known for its rich tradition and theatrical pageantry. The restaurant channels this sense of spectacle into both its design and dining experience. From the equestrian-themed touches to the artful plating, Il Premio resembles the Palio in every detail.

Start your evening in the lounge with their signature Espresso Martini, a citrusfresh take on the classic, which sets the tone for what’s to come. Whether easing into dinner or catching up with friends, it’s the perfect pre-meal pour. The menu fuses rustic Italian roots with a contemporary technique, creating dishes that are as refined as they are delicious. Guests might begin with the Crostini al Tonno, a layered bluefin tuna with foie gras mousse and lemon oil. Expect an unforgettable bite that balances richness and brightness. The Grilled Gem lettuce offers a more savory opening, topped with anchovy dressing, Parmigiano, and crisp pane fritto. It is charred to perfection for a bold, textural contrast.

For something more delicate, the Spigola e Cavoli features crispy-skinned Mediterranean sea bass paired with cucumber, finger lime, and caviar—an interplay of luxurious texture and bright acidity. Pasta plays a starring role at Il Premio, where the kitchen crafts fresh pasta in-house every day, ranging from classic shapes to delicate laminated strands. Their housemade tagliolini, served with slow-cooked ragu bolognese and Parmigiano Vacche Rosse, delivers a deeply comforting flavor that honors tradition while showcasing precise technique.

For mains, the Filet Mignon is a classic, finished with a velvety texture and the perfect sear. While the Premio Burger is a standout in its own right. This familiar favorite is transformed into a rich centerpiece as it is dry-aged and finished with foie gras mousse and cherry pepper aioli. A side of charred broccolini offers a clean complement to the richness of the larger plates. Conclude your meal on a high note with dessert. Il Premio’s Tiramisu is as light as it is decadent, layered with espresso flavor, mascarpone, and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Next door, Bar Premio offers a more relaxed environment for those looking to stay a little longer. With a cocktail-forward menu, Bar Premio serves as a casual counterpart to the main dining room's more formal tone. For those seeking a luxury dining experience rooted in ceremony and substance, Il Premio truly lives up to its name.

It was during my most recent visit to Amsterdam that I discovered the city’s worst kept secret: Pause at Pulitzer, an urban garden oasis within the most stylishly designed hotel in Europe, Hotel Pulitzer. The hotel itself, located between two of the most famous canals in the city, reopened in August following a no-expense-spared, head-to-toe renovation. The 15,000-square-foot flourishing gardens, hidden in the middle of the property’s 25 interconnected 400

year-old canal house buildings, adds an unexpected array of color and freshly scenic views surrounding to the new hotel.

Separated between glass corridors where guests walk from one side of Pulitzer to the other, the garden space is the perfect setting from dawn til’ dusk–visitors can enjoy their morning coffee, read a book in the afternoon sun, or sip a sunset cocktail from Pulitzer’s Bar in the evening. There’s truly nothing of this caliber found in Amsterdam. Already becoming a local neighborhood staple, Pause at Pulitzer is

very much a space for everyone, not just guests.

Following Pulitzer’s recent renovation, the nouveauclassique hotel now consists of 225 guest rooms including four eccentrically designed Collector’s Suites, boasting private canal entrances–it’s very much reminiscent of your own private mini apartment. Creative Director Jacu Strauss managed to sleep in all 225 rooms during the design process, ensuring no two rooms were identical; making certain guests have a unique experience with each visit.

Strauss himself was formerly a senior designer at Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio and has led a multitude of projects including Barbecoa for Jamie Oliver and Mondrian London at Sea Containers before ultimately overseeing the renovations and redesign at Pulitzer for the past three years. Strauss managed to create the same space within the garden area, but it’s not until visiting the property that one is capable of depicting how truly standout this hotel is.

Pause
Pause Counter View

Labeled as ‘Pause,’ the urban space is designed for anyone to sit back, relax, and enjoy the property at any given time. Featuring a giant swing and hand-carved wooden rocking horses, it’s as much a playground for adults as it is for children. Complemented by a lobby bar, consisting of green velvet seats and sophisticated white marble, ‘Pause’ is simply exposed when strolling through the lobby. The bar serves a range of French-style pastries and light meals throughout the day to garden visitors; with fresh juices, coffee and a selection of handpicked wines–an experience yet to be matched throughout the city. With all of Pause’s sights and scenery, it’s no surprise that the brand new guest rooms were built to overlook the picturesque space.

The interior of each individual space has been designed to convey a dash of idiosyncratic wit, breathing fresh personality into an already historically rich city. From trade merchants to flamboyant Dutch aristocrats, the interior of these distinguished canal buildings have been sensitively restored to reflect the past inhabitants of the properties. Each building is a monument in its own right, showcasing the traditional essence of the Dutch capital whilst telling a range of stories that will inspire and intrigue guests and visitors.

Guests can choose from four distinctive guestroom styles and three suite categories, as well as the beautifully romantic Pulitzer’s Suite which still features original chandeliers and an antique ladies writing desk. In addition, there are four exceptional Collector’s Suites with private street entrances and stunning views of the canals that are inspired by the narrative of elaborate characters who potentially lived in the buildings throughout the years; from a compulsive art devotee to an eccentric book lover; a music composer and a grand antique collector. In this home-away-from-home, guests will enjoy a front row seat atop the historic canals, finished with Le Labo amenities and a bike repair set.

Each unique suite has something different to offer. The Art Collector’s Suite for instance, was inspired by the enormous collection of art gathered through the years by Pulitzer, while The Book Collector’s Suite is based on Amsterdam houses with beautiful book collections and is meant to feel like the home of a romantic book collector, explorer or intellectual. The centerpiece of the room is a dramatic, floor-to-ceiling book display with old and current books from stores found on The Nine Streets. The Book

Collector’s Suite

The Antique Collector’s Suite is a collection of antique furniture and objects gathered from both the city and worldwide, and features a wall covered in new and vintage mirrors. The Music Collector’s Suite was inspired by record shops on The Nine Streets, the musical and festival events in the city and the annual Prinsengracht Concert. The room features a wall of trumpets, a vast collection of framed records and a vintage record player cabinet with a collection of records.

Pulitzer Amsterdam’s new restaurant, Jansz, is a quietly elegant restaurant with an easy-going Dutch attitude; featuring a feminine interior with touches of pink, and a private blue velvet dining space. Executive Chef Cassidy Hallman commandeers a neighborhood favorite restaurant which produces a menu of beautifully crafted modern classics that respect the simplicity of quality produce and ingredients. The restaurant itself is aptly named after Volkert Jansz, a 17th century Dutch craftsman known for his sophisticated tastes.

In addition to Jansz, Pulitzer’s Bar brings a chic-classique style cocktail lounge to Amsterdam, a space defined by sumptuous furnishings and intimate atmosphere. The cocktail menu offers drinks that are classic in both nature and style, but modern in execution. Each follows one consistent recipe: one part past, one part present, and one part revolutionary technique. For example, the Pineapple Old Fashioned is served on a bed of hay to add another layer of aroma to the drink.

The location of Pulitzer Amsterdam, The Nine Streets, is known as one of Amsterdam’s most fashionable neighborhoods and a renowned breathing space for local designers. Within easy reach of the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and The Anne Frank House, the hotel is in a simply unrivaled location. As a true home-away-fromhome, Pulitzer is understated luxury at its finest–this is where travelers would want to stay when searching for the quintessential Dutch experience.

For your caffeine fix, hit up Lucky Goat Coffee, a local roastery that takes its beans seriously. The Adams Street location is perfect for a quiet morning or a midday pick-me-up before more exploring.

Evenings in Tallahassee shine bright, especially downtown. Start with a tasting at Wall’s Distilling Co., a small-batch operation known for its Southern-inspired whiskey expressions. So don’t sleep on Florida’s capital. Tallahassee is blooming, and now’s the perfect time to go along for the ride.

PLACE OF PEACE

DESIGNING SPACES INTO SANCTUARIES

For Dr. Alphonso A. Buie, interior design began as a personal project and transformed into a business. After designing his own home and sharing it on social media, friends began asking for help with their spaces. With a doctorate in business and a strong creative background, he launched Place of Peace, an interior design business founded on intention.

“The name came from my grandmother,” says Dr. Alphonso. “She always said, ‘Your home should be a place of peace.’ That stuck with me.”

One recent project began as a blank slate. The homeowners, a couple, gave him full creative freedom. Inspired by the tones of a Versace wallpaper, teal, orange, and gold, Dr. Alphonso carried the palette through the home in subtle and striking ways. In the dining room, a circular marble table is paired with crushed burnt-orange chairs, gold accents, and textured wallpaper that climbs up soaring walls. “It’s dramatic, but comfortable.”

In the living room, Dr. Alphonso layered texture and tones to create a space that feels both grounded and expressive. Custom-built cabinetry frames a TV, blending function with form. The bold Versace Medusa wallpaper on the fireplace becomes the room’s focal point, softened by a contrasting black wallpaper below with a repeating circle pattern that echoes the rhythm of the space. Deep navy pillows, rich green chairs, and warm metal accents anchor the room in moody sophistication.

Upstairs, the bedroom delves into richness and restraint. A gray tufted headboard sits against a slate-painted wall. Smoky-glass pendants frame the bed, which is layered in leather, suede, satin, and velvet. “If you’re going to invest anywhere, let it be your bedroom,” he shares. An adjacent reading corner, complete with custom lighting and a tactile art piece, adds personality and comfort.

Even small spaces get attention. In the powder room, teal Versace wallpaper wraps the walls and ceiling, accented by orange florals and blackand-gold fixtures. Oversized stamp prints from South Africa and Tanzania bring in global flair. “Powder rooms are where you can go bold. They should reflect your personality in a big way.”

From a statement hallway gallery of family photos to hardware swaps, every detail is chosen with purpose. “I don’t like using the same thing twice,” he says. “Every client is different and unique. My job is to help tell their story.”

Whether it’s a cozy entryway or a dramatic dining room, his spaces are layered, expressive and deeply personal. “In a world full of spaces that make us feel like we don’t belong, I want to create the opposite. I want people to walk in and feel like they’re supposed to be there. Like they’re home.”

From Silk Road relics to otherworldly deserts, Gansu delivers a mesmerizing mix of history, culture, & wild beauty.

A hot wind brushes past as I take in the view: hundreds of jagged rock formations rise from the desert floor, carved by centuries of sandstorms into sharp ridges and towers. I’m standing in Yardang National Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark in northwest China, two hours north of Dunhuang.

This surreal landscape, nicknamed “Devil City,” stretches endlessly—stone soldiers standing sentinel in the Gobi Desert. When the wind howls through them, locals say it sounds like ghosts. Yet today, Beethoven’s Fifth drifts from hidden speakers near our lookout, an oddly perfect soundtrack for this lunar world.

It’s the final stop on my two-week journey through Gansu Province, hosted by the China National Tourist Office. We’ve followed the ancient Silk Road through oasis towns, grasslands, Buddhist monasteries, and imperial ruins. The deeper I’ve traveled, the clearer it’s become: Gansu is one of China’s great undiscovered treasures.

A Province Shaped by History

Often called the cradle of Chinese civilization, Gansu sits at the crossroads of the Silk Road, the Yellow River, and the Great Wall. With landscapes spanning desert, grassland, and alpine plateau, it’s a place where history is written into the land. Merchants, armies, and pilgrims once moved through its Hexi Corridor—a 1,200-kilometer lifeline linking East and West. Today, it’s a playground for travelers seeking culture with a side of adventure.

Gansu ranks second in China for UNESCO World Heritage sites, yet few American travelers could place it on a map. Here’s why it deserves their attention.

Lanzhou: Golden Gateway

A two-hour flight from Beijing delivers me to Lanzhou, Gansu’s capital. Home to 3.5 million people, the city sprawls along the Yellow River—the only Chinese capital built directly on its banks.

The river is everywhere: celebrated in sculpture, framed by parks, and spanned by Zhongshan Bridge, the first

permanent crossing built here in 1909. On weekends, families picnic by the water, teenagers promenade, and vendors sell everything from skewers to bubble tea. I join the flow, rewarded on the far bank with a glass of eight-treasure tea.

That night, I wander Lanzhou’s Zhengning Road Night Market. The air is thick with smoke from skewers, sugar from fried pastries, and chatter from locals. I skip the snacks, savoring the spectacle.

Into Tibetan Grasslands

Leaving Lanzhou, our bus climbs into Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The city noise gives way to endless grasslands dotted with yaks, sheep, and prayer flags rippling in the breeze.

Our destination is Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, one of the six great monasteries of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect. Once home to 3,000 monks, about half remain today. The sprawling complex dazzles with golden roofs, crimson halls, and a three-kilometer ring of prayer wheels—the world’s longest. Spinning them one by one, I feel the rhythm of devotion that has pulsed here for centuries.

Deeper into Gannan, we reach Zhagana, a mountain valley often called “China’s last Garden of Eden.” Wooden walkways and scenic trails thread between Tibetan villages and mist-shrouded cliffs. Domestic tourists pose in traditional dress; I hike past them, camera in hand, overwhelmed by the raw beauty. A simple Tibetan lunch—yak butter tea, barley bread, dumplings—completes the immersion.

Dunhuang: Where Art Meets Desert

Back in the Hexi Corridor, Dunhuang is the Silk Road city that fired my imagination long before arriving. At its heart are the Mogao Grottoes: a complex of 492 painted caves housing more than 2,400 statues and vivid frescoes spanning 1,600 years.

Our private English-language guide leads us into the darkness. Lantern light reveals intricate Buddhas, jeweled ceilings, and stories painted in mineral pigment. A 120-foot seated Buddha presides over it all, serene and monumental. It’s easy to see why Mogao was one of the first sites inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Dunhuang doesn’t stop at history. An immersive museum recreates grotto interiors. At night, “Music and Dance of Dunhuang,” a lavish stage show, resurrects the city’s golden era with acrobatics, song, and swirling silk costumes.

The desert here is equally enchanting. We ride past the Han Dynasty ruins at Yumen Pass, where crumbling watchtowers once guarded caravans. And finally, to Yardang National Park—the haunting finale of my Gansu adventure.

Ancient Soul, Modern Welcome

What surprises me most is not just the sights, but the seamless infrastructure built to support them: shaded walkways, shuttle buses, spotless visitor centers with snacks and Wi-Fi. Gansu has preserved its history while making it accessible in ways that enhance, rather than diminish, the experience.

Two weeks in this storied province have been equal parts exhilarating and exhausting, a whirlwind of monasteries, markets, grottoes, and deserts. To walk these ancient paths as one of the few Western travelers here feels like a privilege—and a promise of what’s to come as Gansu opens itself to the world.
