FEAST FOR FOODIES Nantwich’s annual food festival weekend proves a hit THOUSANDS of foodies flooded into Nantwich last month to enjoy the town’s annual food festival.

Visitors of all ages enjoyed a whole host of entertainment and stalls around the town, with local businesses and retailers putting on activities.

The spectacular opened on with an extravaganza of live music including performances from local artists, bands and schools and of course, an abundance of food for festival goers to enjoy.

There were even Minions, stilt-walkers and firebreathers to entertain the

crowds.

For the second year running the town centre played host to the Aga Rangemaster Theatre, where chefs showed off their culinary skills and audiences picked up a tip or two.

Reaseheath College won over youngsters with ‘milk a cow’ and a horse simulator.

The Sunday saw a dozen brave foodies take part in the The Critter Chomp Challenge, in which they had to munch and crunch their way through an array of bugs.

Actress Deborah Bouchard took the winning position by

eating her way through the critters, finishing with a full Zebra Tarantula.

Another highlight of the weekend was the Great Enzo (cont. on page 7)

by Jonathan White TWO local men have been taking on a gruelling cycle challenge to raise money for charity.

Ben Reinhardt and Jim Forkin, from Crewe and Willaston respectively, have spent the month cycling the length of the River Rhine - a total journey of 860 miles.

They started their journey at the source of the Rhine as it rises in the Swiss Alps at Lake Toma.

Over the three weeks they have planned to follow the river as it flows through Switzerland, Germany,

Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, France to its mouth into the North Sea at the Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands.

All proceeds will go to the charity Bloodwise - formerly known as Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Ben is a committee member of Bloodwise (South Cheshire Branch), and Jim is a fundraiser.

They have been friends for nearly 50 years.

Road safety

PARENTS parking in and around Berkeley Academy in Wisaston will soon have a new drop-off point for their children.

The school, which has now taken on academy status, has recently received planning approval from the authority to replace its existing buildings.

Residents have in the past voiced concerns about parking problems in and around the school first thing in the morning and at pick-up time.

Cheshire East Council has now responded to those concerns and is making provision for a new drop-off point for parents wishing to take their children to school by car.

At the site, off Laidon Avenue, work is under way to design a suitable scheme.

Council leader Michael Jones, said: “We’ve listened to the community, including residents and parents, and we will come up with a solution that will help ease any tensions that have been building up.”

Live comedy

Sporting chance REASEHEATH College is offering talented young athletes the chance to train in football or golf with the opening of three new sport academies.

The Nantwich college has teamed up with Crewe Alexandra Football Club and the Ian Woosnam Golf Academy to the sporting opportunities.

Reaseheath will welcome students into its Ladies’ and Men’s Football Academies, while young golfers can enrol for the new Ian Woosnam Academy at Malkins Bank Golf Club near Sandbach.

The footballers will receive specialised training from Crewe Alex FC coaches and other professionals while studying at Reaseheath for a qualification in sport.

The golfers will spend almost half of their course learning golf related skills at the Ian Woosnam Academy and the remainder at Reaseheath.

All three academies are aimed at 16 – 19 year-olds and include college training in relevant subjects like sport psychology, physiology and nutrition, along with opportunities to develop coaching and technical skills.

THE Very Best In Stand Up returns to the Civic Hall in Nantwich on Friday October 2.

Compere for the evening, Phil Ellis, won last year’s panel prize at the Edinburgh Festival for his show Fun and Gamez, a child friendly show laced with over-their-heads humour for the adults.

Also in the one-to-watch category is Dane Baptiste, a comedian enjoying a fast rise up the comedy ladder with several TV appearances already.

October also brings back Lloyd Langford, who will be no stranger to many - having appeared on many TV shows such as ‘Ask Rhod Gilbert’, ‘Q.I.’ and ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’.

The final name on the bill is Joe Lycett, who has had a storming year with stints on ‘Live at The Apollo’ and ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’.

This date is sandwiched in between Joe’s 40+ date tour most of which has sold out.

Mayor’s quiz NANTWICH Mayor Andrew Martin is challenging people to test their knowledge in a charity quiz night.

Teams of six are invited to take part on Friday October 23 at Nantwich Civic Hall and help raise funds for the Mayor’s charities Nantwich Museum, Nantwich in Bloom, and Nantwich Players.

There will be raffle prizes on offer and organisers hope to sign up about 20 teams.

Entry fee is £8 a head, which includes a hot pie supper, doors open 7.30pm.

Santa show

SANTA will be returning to Nantwich Civic Hall this year in the family Christmas show - Santa’s Rusty Robot.

Written by Iain Lauchlan, well-known for his Tweenies scripts, this show includes fun characters, favourite action songs, a great story and, of course, a chance to meet Santa and get a present from him.

The show runs from December 5 to 10.

Police appeal

Grand designs

RESTORATION work to repair and restore the Nantwich Aqueduct back to its former glory will resume this month.

Work on the Grade 2 listed building was postponed back in March to avoid disruption for local businesses during the summer and to allow additional funds to be raised.

The £200,000 restoration project could take up to eight weeks.

Marc Evans, project manager, said: “For almost two centuries this iconic aqueduct has carried boats over the Chester Road but, like many historic building, it requires specialist conservation repairs from

time to time.

“The planned work will bring the aqueduct back to its former glory as an impressive gateway to the town.”

The restoration project involves crucial repairs to the structure, new signage and painting and the removal of overgrown vegetation.

The aqueduct comprises a cast iron trough supported by six cast iron arch ribs.

The B5341 Chester Road at the cross roads of Welsh Row and Taylor Drive will be temporarily closed until November 9 while the work is being carried out.

Diversions will be in place along the A51, Barony Road, Beam Street and Waterlode.

OFFICERS are appealing for information following the theft of a bracelet during a burglary in Nantwich.

The incident occurred sometime between August 11 and 17.

The victims returned home from holiday to discover their bungalow had been broken into.

Once inside the address the offenders stole jewellery, which included the distinctive bracelet.

If anyone has seen the bracelet, or has any information regarding it’s whereabouts then please contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 513.

Food festival

(cont. from front) Charity Bake Off in aid of Christie Hospital Support Group.

Some £748.74 was raised for the charity by budding local Mary Berry’s, who conjured up an assortment of cakes.

Festival Chairman Deborah Robb commented “A great team was been working tirelessly to make the event a success and I think we have done just that.

“We have welcomed over 40,000 people to the town, breaking all previous records and allowing for a great economic boost to the town, with local traders reaping the benefits of packed streets.

“The festival saw people travelling from much further afield, even a motorcyclist from Germany travelled over especially for the occasion!

“It was great to see so many visitors taking advantage of our park and ride scheme too, which eases congestion as well as raising money for local charities.”

Local plan for village

CHESHIRE East Council has backed Bunbury’s efforts to prevent unsustainable and unplanned development.

The council has now formally received Bunbury’s Neighbourhood Plan, which enables local people to have a say in the development they would like to see in and around the village.

Bunbury Parish Council, which covers a largely rural area with a population of 2,136, successfully applied for designation, which was approved in October 2014.

The plan will now be the subject of a final six weeks of public consultation before being scrutinised by an independent examiner.

A positive report will then mean that the plan can progress to a local referendum

when local people will be given the opportunity to vote and bring the plan into effect.

The policies in the plan will then be given their full weight in deciding planning applications.

Parish council chairman Ron Pulford said: “A consensus has emerged that accepts the need for limited development but also says that we want it on terms that encourage sustainable development, with small groups of houses have regard to the character and infrastructure of the village.

“The plan has already been cited at planning meetings, where planning applications that were outside the scope of the plan were refused.

“Our journey isn’t over, with more consultation organised

by Cheshire East Council to come.”

Their England team contested the European Championships last month.

DABBERS EXIT CUP Nantwich Town crash out of cup in narrow defeat

THE Dabbers’ stuttering start to the season has continued with an early exit from the FA Cup. Nantwich Town huffed, puffed, hit the post and had one cleared off the line.

But ultimately they were knocked out of the FA Emirates Cup in the 1st Qualifying Round 1-0 away at Spalding United.

Manager Phil Parkinson made one change to the side that beat Colwyn Bay as Terry Smith started in goal for Jose Viega.

Harry Clayton was on the bench for the first time since his return to the Nantwich side.

The game was a tough one on a hard pitch with Nantwich seeing a lot of the ball early on and they had a few chances to get an early goal.

the attacks from Nantwich making a goal very difficult.

Just before the half hour mark the opening goal came when a long ball down the line was headed back by Andy White but it was picked up

by Josh Moreman, who raced into the area and slotted past Smith.

As the first half drew to a close, the Dabbers started to get back into the game as they strived to find an equalizer, with a number of players starting various attacks – but there was no joy.

On 55 minutes Nantwich had their best chance to make it 1-1 when sub Chris Smith saw his shot thump against the post.

Then from the corner Mat Bailey won a header and knocked it down for Short who fired it goalwards, but keeper Michael Duggan was able to catch it.

UPCOMING FIXTURES

A few other attacks from Nantwich followed, but they couldn’t find that elusive goal.

The full time whistle came to much disappointment to the Dabbers as they went out of the greatest cup competition in England at the first hurdle.
