HALL BLAZE Police arrest after fire hits historic local hall POLICE have arrested a man following a blaze at Haslington Hall and the theft of trailers. At 8.05am on Saturday March 24 firefighters were called to the fire at the large Grade I listed building in Holmshaw Lane in Haslington near Sandbach. Extensive damage has been caused to the building and the cause of the fire is being investigated jointly by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Police. On April 10 Cheshire Police arrested a 44-year-old man from

Haslington on suspicion of arson in connection with the incident. He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries. Fire engines from Crewe, Nantwich, Alsager, Sandbach, Holmes Chapel and Lymm all attended the incident, along with an aeial platform. Jets were used along with a hydraulic platform which was used as a water tower along with three light portable pumps. Firefighters also used breathing apparatus and hose reel to

extinguish the fire. All persons were accounted for. Firefighters later damped

down hotspots in sections of the building after checking with thermal imaging cameras.

Chris takes the heat by Stewart Green SANDBACH dentist Chris Harbour proved a hit in the kitchen in the popular TV show Masterchef. Chris, whose practice in Sandbach is on Crewe Road, made it through to the semi-finals of the competition. Chris, 56, particularly impressed judges Gregg Wallace and John Turode with his inventive take on the classic English breakfast. During his time on the show he was memorably described

by Gregg as a cross between Patrick Stewart and himself. One of the dishes he made during the series was the first meal he cooked for his wife at their new home. Chris apparently loves to try molecular methods of cooking and has a Heston Blumenthal book that he uses all the time. In his final appearance Chris experienced the pressures of a professional kitchen at ‘Sartoria’ in London’s Mayfair where he was put to work making a crab dish by chef Francesco Mazzei.

Warning after doorstep con POLICE are urging residents to be vigilant after a cold-caller tried to convince a woman in Sandbach to hand over a £2,000 deposit to have her drains unblocked. At around 8.55am on Friday March 23 a young man knocked on her front door and told her that the drains of her Middlewich Road home were blocked. He added that he had an expensive machine that could unblock the drains but would require a large deposit to carry out the work. He asked her to go to the bank to collect the money, and even though she refused he soon called back at her home with an older man. Police Constable Jemma Bingham said: “The men went away empty handed but this was a very distressing incident for the householder. “We are determined to trace the men and urge anyone who

saw them in the area around the time of the incident or thinks they know who the men are to get in touch.” Both men were white, around 5’ 10” to 6’ tall and were wearing dark clothing. The young man is estimated to be in his mid-20s and is described as being well-built with short, dark and thick hair and had a black woolly jumper on. The older man was slimmer, is estimated to be in his 30s or 40s and was wearing a dark cap. PC Bingham added: “If you recognise the descriptions of the men or have any other information that may help with our investigation please call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 17139, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. “I also want to take this opportunity to urge people to be vigilant and to call police if you become suspicious of anyone who comes to your door offering to carry out work.”

Pupils learn bushcraft SANDBACH youngsters have been learning about the great outdoors in a partnership with Reaseheath College in Nantwich. Pupils from St John’s Primary School have been taking part in birdwatching, bushcrafts and campfire cooking in a secial forest school run by Conservation and Wildlife Management students. The forest school project is the

latest phase in a continuing partnership with St John’s. The students have redeveloped woodland in the school grounds, creating habitat piles, improving paths, felling trees to let in more light and renovating a fire pit. They have also designed and built a bird screen which is regularly enjoyed by the pupils as they learn to identify their local bird species.

EMERGENCY services were called to the scene of a collision at Smithfield Lane this month. Two fire engines, along with police and paramedics, attended the incident at around

5.25pm on April 12. Firefighters worked to make the scene safe and assistance was given to one female casualty who was injured in the threevehicle collision.

Transport festival hits the road by Stewart Green THE 28th Sandbach Transport Festival proved a huge hit this year. The weekend had everything from dinosaurs and pirates to a replica Spitfire. The family event also featured a fun fair, hog roast, live music and arts activities from co-organisers Spare Parts. The festival further included numerous vehicles from all over the country, along with locally produced products from Foden’s and ERF, and the Jimp.

Large crowds took advantage of the sunshine on the Saturday while Sunday saw Foden’s Band playing outside the Town Hall as visitors enjoyed the parade followed by the arrival of the St Luke’s motor bike riders. Spare Parts held their own procession through the town with local people taking part with a cheater on a bike and a tribute to mark the centenary of the female franchise. Both days ended with a procession of vehicles that had been on display on Scotch Common.

MP welcomes ivory ban SANDBACH MP Fiona Bruce has welcomed the Government’s confirmation of a ban on ivory sales. The UK is to ban ivory sales in plans to help protect elephants for future generations. The maximum available penalty for breaching the ban will be an unlimited fine of up to five years in jail. The number of elephants has declined by almost a third in the last decade and around 20,000 a year are still being slaughtered due to the global demand for ivory. Mrs Bruce said: “This is an issue of great significance and one that I have spoken of in

Parliament having been moved by the plight of these animals following a working trip to Tanzania. “This is a global issue which harms the poorest countries the most. “For example – by reducing the tourist trade on which many poor African families are dependent – as I was told in Tanzania, people who pay for safaris want to see elephants. “But especially tragic is the cruelty these majestic animals endure at the hands of brutal ivory poachers – around 55 African elephants are killed for their ivory a day, their tusks turned into carvings and trinkets.”

FIREFIGHTERS attended reports of a fire at an address in Sandbach on April 12 at 3.50pm. Officers were called out out after reports that the smoke alarm had activated at a house

in Bailey Crescent. They found that the alarms had activated due to a small fire in a waste paper basket. The crew extinguished the fire and ventilated the property.

A CONSULTATION has been launched to find a site for a skate park and BMX track in Sandbach. Local Councillor Sam Corcoran said: “At the end of last year a consultation was held to determine whether there was any demand for such facilities in Sandbach. “Some 760 responses were received to the consultation, of which 60% would like to see a skatepark in Sandbach. “A similar percentage would

like to see a bmx track.” To take part in the consultation visit www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ FTBLLF8 or access it via www. ncla.co.uk. Any site selected for further consideration will then be evaluated in conjunction with Sandbach Town Council, Cheshire East Council and any relevant landowners. Cllr Corcoran added: “I look forward to seeing the results of the consultation which will be open until the end of May.”

A NEW church called Grace Church Sandbach was launched on Easter Sunday. It began with a morning worship at Sandbach High School, followed by a 4pm service at Sandbach Town Hall. This was followed by a Family Town Trail on the Saturday, which some 125 children and families attended. The morning worship service will continue to be held at 10.30 every Sunday at Sandbach

High School with a Sunday School and crèche, while the afternoon service at the Town Hall will be at 4pm on the first Sunday of each month. Starting on May 6 at will be the first of a series of discussions entitled Honest Questions about the Christian faith - with this first one pondering ‘the meaning of life and why we are here’. For details contact Pastor Paul Gibson on 01270 361904 or visit www.grace-sandbach.co.uk.

SANDBACH’S Foden’s Band is playing two concerts in tribute to a former band member. The group will perform at Sandbach School Theatre on Friday June 1 and Sunday June 3, from 7.30pm, to mark the centenary of the death of Edwin Firth. Edwin was a principal cornet with the band and was killed serving his country on June 1

1918, at the age of 29. The concerts will include a new commission from the pen of composer-in-residence Andy Scott to mark the occasion. As well as being a fantastic cornet player Edwin was also an accomplished composer and some of his works, including the famous march ‘Westwood Ho’, will also be performed. Tickets from 07740 354106.

ELWORTH CC has raised funds for a defibrillator and outdoor container for its storage. The efforts of Penny Stephenson and Kev Roberts, who were sponsored to run 10km, made the greatest contribution. The defibrillator is not solely for the use of cricket club members or those using its facilities but will also be accessible to all members of the community in case of emergency. On the field Russ Ballard will once again lead the 1st XI as they begin their first Premier Division campaign since 2013 and Yasir Ali will return for his ninth season as club professional. Yasir has just finished one of his most successful first class

seasons in Pakistan. Raj Kumar, who has been coaching in India during the winter, returns to Elworth adding his wealth of experience. Right arm medium fast bowler Adnan Ghaus, who joined the club in the winter, has also been playing first class cricket in Pakistan. Opening bat Matthew Yardley arrives from Derbyshire County League club Clifton and Dan Roberts, a medium pace bowler, has moved from Sandyford. The latter is a teacher at Sandbach School and has played against Elworth several times including in the 2012 Talbot Cup Final, which the Foxes won.

Sandbach fall prey to last gasp winner SANDBACH will feel they dropped points after losing out in the dying moments away at Bournville. They lost out 35-30 in the last league game of the season, finishing in a respectable seventh position in the Midlands Premier League. Sandbach should have had the game sewn up well before the end when two late converted tries from the chocolate men’s scrum half Will Hardwick stole victory at the death. The game was Bournville’s last at their temporary home at the University of Birmingham pitch and the new artificial grass surface meant for a fast and open game. Sandbach came flying out of the blocks with Benny Elliot scoring a penalty in two minutes. Sandbach’s early dominance

The

M6

paid off, as Elliot created the opening for winger Joe Jepps, to bulldoze over the cover defence for the opening try. Bournville looked dangerous in possession and winger Coulson broke to go under the posts. Sandbach reasserted themselves and following a strong run from young hooker Ewan Ashman and a series of drives, Gareth Caen crashed over. Further good work saw Sandbach go in 23-7 at the break, though perhaps it should have been more. In the second half Bournville worked their way back into the game as their stocky centre Hussey crashed over after and Warner added the conversion. Sandbach then lost Leech to the bin for offside and Bournville took advantage of the extra numbers, for another converted

crucial converted scores. While the Sale Sharks coaching duo Rob Webber and Byron McGuigan has certainly improved the quality of the players, Sandbach know there is still a bit to do just yet, to realise the potential of the team.
