Cold war visit

by Jonathan White VISITORS to the Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker near Nantwich took a trip back in time this month. The fourth annual Soviet Threat event recreated what life was like either side of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. There were armed troops patrolling the grounds, checkpoints and numerous military vehicles from both Western and Eastern forces. Inside the bunker there were troops keeping check on the opposition and monitoring any

possible nuclear attacks. There were also re-enactors of Malayan Emergency and East German border guards. The event was organised by museum director at Hack Green Nuclear Bunker Lucy Siebert, EventPlan and keen local historians. In 1941 Hack Green, a site previously used as a bombing decoy site for the main railway centre at Crewe, was chosen to become RAF Hack Green to protect the land between Birmingham and Liverpool from hostile attack. MP speaks on syria NANTWICH MP Laura Smith has taken the Prime Minister to task over the bombing of Syria. The Labour MP spoke up in a House of Commons debate about Syria, on April 16. She said: “Among those of us who have been trying to follow President Trump’s tweets over the past week, I cannot be the only person who has found it extremely difficult to keep track of whether he was for military action or against military action. “So I wonder whether the Prime Minister can tell us at what point the President instructed her that military action would be taken.” Prime Minister Theresa May responded: “The answer to the hon. Lady’s question is this: at no point at all. “I took this decision, because I believed it was the right

thing to do and it was in our national interest. “It is a decision that should, I believe, be supported by anybody who recognises that we need to re-establish the international norms in relation to the use, and the prohibition of the use, of chemical weapons.” The local politican had Tweeted two days earier: “PM taken military action in Syria without any recourse to parliament. I have serious reservations - was prepared to listen to all sides but PM has sidelined parliament and taken her orders from Trump. Not at all convinced this will make the world or our communities a safer place.”

Awards for local scouts ADVENTUROUS local scouts have earned string of awards. Members of the 38th South West Cheshire Scouts, based on Davenport Avenue, took part in the Cheshire Hike earlier this month. Henry Montgomery and

Oscar Pedley, both aged 11, took first place in the Junior category for both the district and county, as well as winning the Brian Kershaw Trophy for the team with the highest points in their first ever Cheshire Hike. Stage thrills from Players

NANTWICH Players stage their latest work The Thrill of Love next month. The drama is from Amanda Whittington and described as a gripping, modern drama about Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. The play takes a fresh new look at the woman behind the headlines and at the events that unfolded in London 1955. Director Marie Straker said: “The play is a sensitive exploration of the truth of the real Ruth Ellis and thus an investigation into the likely miscarriage of justice that

resulted, in her being the last woman hanged in Britain for the murder of her upper class, racing driver lover, David Blakely, actually a violent domestic abuser and philanderer. “You may now be feeling that this is a gloomy subject but I can assure you that, there is much humour in the script and that our production makes for laughter, as well as just about every other emotion that you can imagine.” The production runs from May 11 to 19. Tickets are £9, available on 01270 600727.

DETECTIVES investigating an arson at an address in Ridley, near Nantwich, are appealing for witnesses. The fire took place at 8.30pm on Sunday April 8 at an address on Wrexham Road. Offenders have used gas canisters to set fire to the back of the property. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a

thermal imaging camera and a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and cool down the propane cylinders. Detective Natalie Carthy, of Crewe CID, said: “Thankfully no one was injured but we are urging anyone who has any information to come forward. “If you saw anyone acting suspiciously please call us on 101.”

Sealed Knot tribute

by Jonathan White THE Sealed Knot Society unveiled a plaque in a low-key ceremony at Volunteer Fields in Beam Street this month. The ceremony, attended by Town Mayor Penny Butterill and Society chairman Simon Wright, was in recognition of the group’s 46-year association with the town. The plaque, which was accompanied by the gift of a tree, is inscribed: “This tree recognises forty six years of the unique relationship between the people of Nantwich and The Sealed Knot Society in its fiftieth

year. “On 25th January 1644, one of the decisive battles of the English Civil War was fought to relieve the Siege of Nantwich. This date became known as Holly Holy Day and is annually remembered by the Townsfolk of Nantwich and The Sealed Knot.’ Parliament was represented by the Manchester Regiment and the Royalist’s were represented by the King’s Guard. The Yeoman of the Knot ceremonial unit represented both Parliament and Royalist sides at the ceremony.

CREWE and Nantwich Rugby Club has received a £10,000 cash boost. The Newcastle Road club, which honed the skills of England and Sale Sharks starlets Ben and Tom Curry, received the cash from the Sharks’ 100 Club. The gift is part of the club’s commitment to supporting grass roots clubs and was triggered after Tom was capped for England last year. England stars Tom and Ben, aged 19, dropped into their former club to see how they’re spending money. The twins, who grew up playing in

Nantwich, both appeared in Eddie Jones’ England squad and played more than 20 Premiership games each for Sharks. The money has helped pay for a tailor-made coaching programme for its Mini and Junior section, which has seen around 120 young players coached according to the Sharks philosophy. Community coach Jack Leech, who led the project for Sharks, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to celebrate the success of the Curry brothers here at Crewe and Nantwich. “But more importantly, it’s great to see how the money they’ve received through the 100 Club is being put to good use and is really making an impact on the future of the club. “There are some incredibly talented young players and coaches here and to be able to support them through their rugby journey - and get a glimpse of the next generation of Sharks talent - is brilliant.”

Cup success and league troubles for Dabbers THE Dabbers continued with their mixed fortunes this season, losing out 2-1 to Ashton United. Despite a thrilling Cheshire Cup win beating Stalybridge 4-3, Nantwich’s league form has been hit and miss. After controlling large parts of the game away at Ashton, they were eventually undone by a great free-kick from Sam Sheridan. The winning goal condemned the Dabbers to their third league defeat on the bounce. Ashton had taken the lead after six minutes as a ball over the top of the defence found Liam Tomsett, whose header flicked over a rushing Myles Boney and into the back of the net. Nantwich replied well throughout the first period, and equalised seven minutes before the break as Caspar

Hughes’ free-kick bobbled around in the box before Tomsett prodded it home into his own net. However, a free-kick on the edge of the box, deep into injury time of the first half saw Sheridan curl it over the wall and past Boney. Manager Dave Cooke made five changes to the side that lost 3-0 to Buxton, as Courtney Wildin, Nathan Cotterell, David Neligwa, Jordan Cole and Sam Wakefield all returned to the starting eleven. The league loss was in contrast to the Dabbers’ excellent run in the Cheshire Cup. They defeated Stalybridge Celtic in a thrilling 4-3 semifinal encounter that went to extra time.
