Anger over new homeless shelter

There has been wide spread anger among residents of Bray after it was announced that a new homeless facility will be located near to Main Street and seafront areas of the town. Wicklow County Council said recently that it had agreed to buy the property in Bray, believed to be the former San Remo nursing home on Sidmonton, to develop a high-supported homeless facility for North Wicklow. Several locals contacted

the Wicklow Voice to express their concern about the plan, which has been developed in partnership with the Housing Agency and Dublin Simon. “Needless to say residents from all surrounding areas are very upset about it,” one said. “It appears the decision was made solely by Wicklow County Council with no involvement from local councilors, representatives, residents etc. “Local councillors have

confirmed they were not involved in the decision and only found out this week before the press release. Local housing and planning were also not involved. “While we fully understand the need to address such issues, a facility of this scale (San Remo had in excess of 50 residents) and in a residential area makes no sense. “Our concerns are many from local impacts on parks,

laneways etc to the wider impact on the Bray community and town, which is already challenged with drug issues and anti-social behavior.” According to Wicklow County Council, individuals throughout the county will benefit from the project which has been given the go-ahead by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
