Jack ‘captured hearts of nation and beyond’ JACK de Bromhead had “captured the hearts of not just a parish, but of a nation, and far beyond,” mourners at his funeral mass heard. Hundreds of people gathered in Waterford for the funeral mass of the 13-year-old jockey, who lost his life tragically in a pony-racing accident. They paid their respects to Jack’s family, including his sisters Mia and Georgia and parents Heather and the leading racehorse trainer Henry de Bromhead, at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Butlerstown, on Wednesday, September 7. Mr de Bromhead told the gathering: “One of the greatest comforts Heather and I have in his passing is that we know how much we loved him. “All our kids, they just know how much we love them and we know how much he loved us. I just ask any of you, whoever you love, make sure to tell them. “If something like this happens to you, something so tragic happens to you, it’s a great comfort. If you could take that away with you, we would

Mum, ‘night Dad, love you”. Jack’s younger sister Georgia paid tribute to her brother during the ceremony, saying he

“was the kindest, most caring big brother I could ever ask for”. She added: “He was never scared to stand up for people and was always there for you no matter what.” His twin sister Mia said in a heartfelt tribute: “Jack, you were the best brother ever, I got so lucky when you were born with me. I will miss your cheeky smile that made all my friends fall in love with you.” Among those who attended were schoolmates from Kilkenny College, where Jack had just started second year, and also from his former schools Newtown School Waterford and Scoil Mhuire in Butlerstown, as well as people from the racing world and other sporting communities. Parish priest Fr Pat Fitzgerald said Jack “captured the hearts of not just a parish but of a nation, and far beyond”, adding they were joining a family who had scaled the heights of jubilation, “and which now has to plumb the deepest depths of sorrow — and we must walk with them”. Dominicans depart THE Dominican order is to leave Waterford after almost 800 years in the city. An ageing and dwindling number of vocations has been cited by the order, with just two Dominican friars still administering in Waterford at its friary on Bridge Street. Negotiations about the future of the church and priory at Bridge Street, Waterford, are “underway with a number of parties”, the order said.

DESPITE the orange weather warning forcing the closure of the Harvest Festival on the Sunday, tens of thousands of festivalgoers flocked to the city to revel in the atmosphere on Friday and Saturday. Festival director Shona Dubois said: “We are thrilled to have experienced absolutely huge support for the Harvest Festival over the weekend, there were visitors

from far and wide and the people of Waterford also turned out in their droves. “Festivalgoers loved the Taste Waterford Kitchen stage demos, the Food Done Right talks, and the Kids zone events, there wasn’t a seat in any tent vacant. “The market traders enjoyed swift trade and the food events at restaurants across the city were booked up.

“We are very proud of all of the team and we want to express our thanks to everyone involved in Harvest. She added: “Naturally having to make the decision to close the festival early due to the Orange weather warning for Waterford was devastating. “We were so disappointed to have to make that call but for the safety of everyone, it was necessary.”

Jack was ‘full of joy of living’

Continued from previous page He referred to the “joyful exuberance of Jack’s short life,” and said Jack was full of the joy of living. “He reveled in the life and the opportunities that surrounded him — in his home, on the farm and in the stables, and in the community. “He loved the tractor, the cattle, the ponies and the horses.” According to Fr Fitzgerald, Jack was “into race riding, rugby, Gaelic, swimming, diving, and especially driving. Every day for him [was] a joyous adventure in living. The all-embracing experience of his life can be expressed in one word — ‘love’.” The funeral was attended by the aides-de-camp to the President and the Taoiseach. The de Bromhead family run their training stables at Knockeen in Co Waterford. Henry de Bromhead took over the stables from his father Harry and has been a very successful trainer and was a Grand National winner in 2021, and the winner of two Cheltenham Gold Cups at the festivals there in 2021 and 2022.

Deal on Waterford Crystal ‘important milestone’

Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins has described the progress which has been made on the purchase of the former Waterford Crystal site for use by the new South East Technological University as an “important milestone”. The Department of Public Expenditure has been engaged in discussions over the 36-acre site on the Cork Road where 1,000 people were once employed by the glass company. It has been proposed as a site for student accommodation, after Higher Education Minister Simon Harriss said expanding the footprint of the university in Waterford was a priority for the Government. Senator Cummins said: “The government have been categoric in their commitment to expanding the footprint of the South East Technological University campus in Waterford city and I have had extensive dialogue with both the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Minister Harris on this matter for a considerable period of time. “I am glad to report [today] that Minister Harris has confirmed to me that he has ‘reserved funding capacity for such an expansion and this is a very clear and tangible sign of that priority and commitment’,” he continued..

Senator Cummins said it was an “important milestone” for the wider community of Waterford as it meant confirmation of “ringfenced funding” for the purchase. He added: “I cannot overstate the importance of this site from both a practical and symbolic perspective. “Not only will it future-proof the growth of the university in Waterford, it will also give an enormous lift to the people of Waterford to know that a site which once employed thousands of people will be repurposed to educate and accommodate the next generation of young workers.” The Waterford Crystal plant was built in the early 1970s and was left vacant after operations came to a halt in 2009. Builder Noel Frisby bought it in 2013, with close to €500,000 spent on the three-storey block to ready it for redevelopment. The plant once employed more than 3,000 people and was a flagship industry for the area. Senator Cummins added that the redevelopment of the plant would “give an enormous lift to the people of Waterford to know that a site which once employed thousands of people will be repurposed to educate and accommodate the next generation of young workers”.

Tax energy firms, council is told

AT the most recent meeting of Waterford City and County Council, local Fianna Fail Councillor Eamon Quinlan criticised energy providers, urging the council to combat what he called the ‘ridiculous price increases’ that will hit consumers. Cllr Quinlan pointed to the fact that all local authorities apply commercial rates on the physical infrastructure of energy companies within their county boundaries. For Waterford, this results in up to €5m per year.

The council is currently applying a rates level of 0.278 on the value of properties, so having the valuation office increase the value would have the potential to release a windfall of finances back into the county. “Preferably, what we need is for the Government to cap electricity bills so that the ordinary person doesn’t get fleeced from the outset at all. We in the Council can help take the lead here by stinging these companies for higher rates,” he told the members.

Numbers to truly Treasure

THE Waterford Treasures collection of museums is fast becoming Waterford’s most popular visitor attraction, as visitor numbers grew by 63%. By the beginning of September 2022, the museums had attracted some 74,000 visitors since opening on January 1st 2022, representing an increase of 47,009 visitors on 2021. The team at the museums are delighted and Museum Director Eamonn McEneaney said: “We are delighted to have welcomed the highest number ever of feepaying visitors to the Waterford Treasures Museums. “We have had an incredible 12 months since we opened the Irish Silver Museum and the Irish Museum of Time in 2021 and focussed on sharing the delights, the treasures and the wonders of the five museums in the Viking Triangle over the last 12 months. “We are thrilled to see the hard work from all of the team reaping rewards for the museums and for Waterford,” she added. Of the 74,000 visitors who visited the museums in 2022, 57% of those were international visitors, 16% were day trippers from Ireland and the remaining 27% were Irish holidaymakers.

Property prices rise but rate hikes will curb growth

THe only way is up for Waterford’s property prices, after the latest figures from the Institute of Professional Auctioneers & Valuers show further increases — but the sentiment is changing. The Residential Property Price Barometer, which covers the first half of 2022, shows two-bedroom apartments up by 6.85%; three-bedroom houses by 10.77% and four-bedroom houses by 8.13%. IPAV’s barometer records prices actually achieved by auctioneers rather than asking prices, for three and fourbedroom semi-detached homes and two-bedroom apartments. In the three-bedroom category among the highest increases were Galway City (12.9%), Clare (11.52%) Carlow (10.98%) then Waterford (10.77%). In the four-bedroom category the top increases took place in Roscommon (10.42%); Wicklow (10.28%); Clare 9.81%) and Limerick (9.79%). Pat Davitt, IPAV Chief Executive, said however, that there was a noticeable change

Mary Sharpe, Margaret Fleming, Aileen Barron and Lisa Dunphy at The Taste Waterford launch in the Granville Hotel. Photo: Patrick Browne in the level of increases in the latter two months. “In the first four months the overall increase would have been of the order of 10% but changes during May and June brought the six months figure to 6.36%. “In the latter two months the practice of increasing reserves — where the price expectations of neighbourhood sellers tend

to escalate when a property achieves a particular level — had almost disappeared.” He said in the period ahead the level of price increases is likely to slow. “In the next six months, we would expect prices to taper to about the 2% mark, with some of the more expensive areas experiencing no increases at all.” Mr Davitt said increasing

interest rates “are bound to dampen sentiment, especially with the hike of 1.25% already and further to come.” He said it was disappointing to see last week’s CSO data showing the residential sector reduce its volume of output by 2.9% on a seasonally adjusted basis between Quarter 1 2022 and Quarter 2 2022.

Suirway halts bus service

WATERFORD’S Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler, has said she was “really disappointed to hear that Suirway will cease operations in the areas of Dunmore East, Portlaw and Passage East at the end of next month”. It comes after the bus operator decided to cease its services “following a prolonged period of extremely difficult trading since the onset of Covid-19” and “reduced passenger footfall”. Minister Butler added: “The bus service, its drivers and staff are all deeply embedded in the communities which they facilitate. They are very well-known and liked by the many patrons of their services from young schoolgoers and college students to older people travelling into Waterford for medical appointments and other business. I am also very sorry to hear of the redundancies the company has had to make in the wake of this decision.” She said she has contacted Local Link Waterford and NTA to highlight the issue and to try and secure a service provision solution for the communities.

SETU puts seven €200k courses on offer fund for

SOUTH East Technological University (SETU) has re-opened applications (through the CAO) to a number of undergraduate courses in a bid to help people achieve their dreams of a college experience and fresh start this September. Seven courses from across SETU’s portfolio are now available to apply for via the CAO’s ‘available places’ list, meaning these courses are now open for applications from people who have not already applied to the CAO, as well as existing CAO applicants. People can apply for an ‘Available Place’ course through the CAO website.

However, applicants are being encouraged to get in touch with SETU directly to discuss their options before applying to make sure they are making the correct choices. Potential applicants and people considering CAO offers can be confident in their course decision by reading course pages thoroughly, taking a virtual tour, or asking questions. The ‘Chat to SETU’ team is running a drop-in centre, helpline, and web chat up until Friday, 16 September. Contact details on www.start. setu.ie and more details on available places on www.setu. ie/availableplaces.

33 artists get new grants

“Today is an historic day for the arts in Ireland and a significant change to the way Ireland recognises and supports her artists,” said Arts Minister Catherine Martin, as 2,000 artists, including 33 from Waterford, were approved for the new Basic Income for the Arts pilot scheme. Over 9,000 applications were made under the scheme with over 8,200 assessed

as eligible and included in a randomised anonymous selection process. The group of 2,000 grant participants includes representatives from all art forms, age groups, ethnicities and counties. Payments of €325 per week will be made to the 2,000 eligible artists and creative arts workers over the course of the scheme, which will continue on a pilot basis for three years.

Why I won’t be putting my money on a cashless society

T

HERE’S a time and a place for everything, they say. And the time for spending real cash money is at the races, particularly when the place is that most unusual of venues, the beach at Laytown in Co Meath. I was there recently, enjoying what is Ireland’s last great strand meeting. The sun shone on happy racegoers of all ages, from infants in buggies to ancients in wheelchairs, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. There’s not a lot of serious betting at Laytown, since predicting the outcome of a race run on sand is about as random as picking the winner of the Aintree Grand National. But the many small transactions between bookmakers and punters were nearly all made

Michael Wolsey

in cash. Some of the bookies did accept payment by card, an innovation for Laytown, as did some of the food and drink stalls. But almost all the exchanges I witnessed involved cash. It’s not that the punters were incapable of paying by other means. Most of them, I’d guess, had debit or credit cards in their wallets. Many of them would have had Revolut accounts. It’s not relevant to the races, but most would have done some online shopping and paid bills by credit transfer. These racegoers laid their bets and bought their drinks with cash not because they are antediluvians who can’t master modern payment systems, but simply because, in the circumstances, cash was more convenient.

When you are standing in line to pay a trackside bookie, surrounded by a milling crowd of punters, it is easier and safer to pull a few quid from your pocket or purse, and a lot quicker, since bookies will complete the transaction in half the time it takes them to operate an electronic payment device. The same goes for paying at a busy food stall. I don’t like rooting a card from my wallet when there are strangers pressing all around me and paying via an app has the additional hazard that your phone could be out of range or out of battery. So, like nearly everyone else at Laytown races, I chose to pay with cash. As I said, there’s a time and a place for everything. That’s what the banks that are trying to push us towards a cashless society fail to un-

derstand. We are, most of us most of the time, quite happy to pay by electronic means, but it doesn’t always suit us and we want the cash option. Card and phone transactions now account for more than 60% of all payments made in Ireland. I don’t think the switch was entirely voluntary – during the Covid crisis many traders gave us no choice but to pay by card. The habit has stuck and some of them still insist on it. It is often convenient to pay with a quick tap but, on the downside, that makes it harder to keep a track of spending and increases the risk of fraud. Every electronic transaction has the potential for fraud. In the days before Covid I made about two such transactions a week, when I drew my spending money from an ATM. Now I make two a day.

But that’s OK so long as I have a choice. If banks get their way, I won’t. It is beside the point, but much of the comment on the move to a cashless society suggests that it will be particularly hard on older people. I understand the argument but I don’t think it is true. I am an older person. Older than ATMs, older than mobile phones, older than debit cards, older than online credit transfers. I can’t see how any of these payment systems present particular problems for old people and I am happy to use them all ... sometimes. What I want is a choice. Because I am also old enough to remember a time when traders operated under the slogan that ‘the customer is always right’. And not just at Laytown races.

WILDLIFE

with Justin Ivory

Wonderful Wasps

German Wasp (Vespula germanica) feeding on aphid ‘honeydew’ on my car windscreen (Pic: Justin Ivory) The words ‘wonderful’ and ‘wasp’ are not usually associated together particularly on sunny, warm September days as we try to grab the last opportunities for alfresco dining only to have the yellow and black striped brigade turn up to spoil the party. But we need to change our relationship with these wonderful creatures. So let’s take a whistle-stop look at their lifecycle, why they behave the way they do at this time of year and why are they so important. In spring hibernating queen wasps emerge and build small, walnut sized nests in which they lay about 20 eggs. The queen feeds the larvae from these eggs until they mature and become sterile female workers. The queen now concentrates on laying more eggs while the workers feed the new larvae and expand the nest. Nests can end up the size of footballs and contain up to 10,000 wasps! The workers feed their young siblings caterpillars, aphids, ants, and flies. The larvae produce a carbohydrate-rich sugary secretion which the workers feed on. As the season progresses the queen stops laying sterile eggs and turns to producing new queens and males. At this stage the requirement for the workers to feeds young draws to an end. The queen stops releasing the pheromone that drives workers to feed the larvae. So now the workers have lost their access to their sugar fix. With no other duties to occupy them they go in search of all things sweet, which leads to them to our picnics, bbqs, kitchens etc. They are addicts looking for their next fix! While the natural reaction is to swat a wasp that gets too close to us, it actually is the worst thing to do. It causes the wasp to release a pheromone that basically calls out ‘Under attack. Need help.’ And before you know it other wasps have come to help it out. Best advice is to leave something sweet and sugary in a spot for them to feast on. They will be happy and leave you in peace.

A story of family, grief, and the ways we come together when all seems lost. Molly Black has disappeared. She’s been flighty since her parents died, but this time - or so says her hastily written note - she’s gone for good. That’s why the whole Black clan - from Granny perched on the printer to Killian on Zoom from Sydney — is huddled together in the Dublin suburbs, arguing over what to do. Former model Lady V presumes Molly’s just off taking drugs and sleeping with strangers - which is fine by her. Cousin Anne, tired of living in Molly’s shadow, is keeping quiet, and cousin Bobby is distracted by his own issues.

HIS new comedy thriller, with Daisy May Cooper and Selin Hizli, revolved around a budding friendship. Nic is grieving a loss that she can’t share with anyone whilst stuck in a depressing marriage. Only her son, Ollie who she adores, keeps her going. But when Jen arrives in town her life is lit up with laughter and through this kindred soul her dark secret starts to bubble up. “Female friendship at its naughtiest and most intoxicating. That is until everything unravels. A twisted comedy thriller about two mums, marital angst, maternal paranoia and a dead cat.” Sounds fun.

Forever a Rock ‘N’ Roll Kid Charlie McGettigan

Renowned Irish songwriter, John Spillane, has released the second single from his upcoming album, In Another Light, recorded live with Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra. ‘Princes Street’ was recorded live at the Right Here Right Now Festival at Cork Opera House in 2021. It was performed live by John Spillane and Pauline Scanlon with the Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra, conducted by John O’Brien and orchestrated by Kevin Codd. Two-time Meteor award winner John Spillane is a musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller, poet . . . and dreamer.

Róise & Frank has been a hit on the festival circuit screening at the Galway Film Fleadh and winning numerous awards including Best Ensemble at Dublin International Film Festival. Shot in Ring, Waterford, during the Summer of 2019, Róise & Frank tells the story of the recently widowed Róise (Bríd Ní Neachtain) who is struggling in the aftermath of her husband Frank’s passing. Róise has distanced herself from the world and those dearest to her. But when a stray dog appears out of nowhere a rejuvenated Róise comes to believe in the reincarnation of her husband.

CHARLIE McGettigan is best known for securing a Eurovision hat trick for Ireland when he and Paul Harrington performed Brendan Graham’s song Rock ‘N’ Roll Kids in 1994. His wonderful new memoir, Forever a Rock ‘N’ Roll Kid: A Journey through Music, Song and Stories, takes the reader back to Ireland in the 1950s, avoiding the cliched golden oneliners where sweetness and light prevailed. Instead, Charlie has opted to tell a ‘warts and all’ story of Irish life in what in his opinion are laughingly called ‘the good old days.’

Could your school win the Waterford’s fittest title?

Irish Olympians, sprinter Phil Healy and fellow athlete, David Gillick For the second year in succession, a call has gone out to schools in Waterford, and elsewhere across the country, from Irish Olympians, sprinter Phil Healy and fellow athlete, David Gillick, who have joined forces with Fyffes in a quest to find ‘Ireland’s Fittest School’. Registration for the Competition, which runs until March 31st, can now be made online at www.fyffesfitsquad.ie, with the overall winner to be announced in

April. Coupled with monthly and spot prize rewards, one successful school will have the distinction of being chosen as ‘Ireland’s Fittest School 2023’, the prize for which will be a visit from Healy and Gillick and €5,000 worth of sports equipment. Last year, North Donegal primary school, Scoil Na Croise Naofa, in Dunfanaghy, fought off stiff competition from the large volume of competitors to be crowned

the overall winner. The commencement of the competition coincides with the resumption this month of Fyffes children’s fitness programme of live school visits following a two year break during Covid. The upcoming schedule will see some 7,500 pupils from schools throughout Ireland, North and South, participate in an interactive Fit Squad session between now and March next.
