Waterford fine Gael Senator John Cummins has described the progress which has been made on the purchase of the former Waterford Crystal site for use by the new South east technological University as an “important milestone”. the department of Public expenditure has been engaged in discussions over the 36-acre site on the Cork road where 1,000 people were once em ployed by the glass company. Every electronic transaction has the potential for fraud.

But that’s OK so long as I have a choice.

I was there recently, enjoy ing what is Ireland’s last great strand meeting.

The sun shone on happy race goers of all ages, from infants in buggies to ancients in wheel chairs, and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

It’s not that the punters were incapable of paying by other means. Most of them, I’d guess, had debit or credit cards in their wallets. Many of them would have had Revolut accounts.

I don’t like rooting a card from my wallet when there are strangers pressing all around me and paying via an app has the additional hazard that your phone could be out of range or out of battery.

As I said, there’s a time and a place for everything.

But the many small transac tions between bookmakers and punters were nearly all made

Because I am also old enough to remember a time when trad ers operated under the slogan that ‘the customer is always right’. And not just at Laytown races.

These racegoers laid their bets and bought their drinks with cash not because they are antediluvians who can’t master modern payment systems, but simply because, in the circum stances, cash was more conve nient.

T

It is often convenient to pay with a quick tap but, on the downside, that makes it harder to keep a track of spending and increases the risk of fraud.

I am an older person. Older than ATMs, older than mobile phones, older than debit cards, older than online credit trans fers.Ican’t see how any of these payment systems present par ticular problems for old people and I am happy to use them all ...Whatsometimes.Iwant is a choice.

in cash. Some of the bookies did accept payment by card, an innovation for Laytown, as did some of the food and drink stalls.Butalmost all the exchanges I witnessed involved cash.

If banks get their way, I won’t. It is beside the point, but much of the comment on the move to a cashless society suggests that it will be particularly hard on older people.

So, like nearly everyone else at Laytown races, I chose to pay with cash.

That’s what the banks that are trying to push us towards a cashless society fail to un

Why I won’t be putting my money on a cashless society

In the days before Covid I made about two such transac tions a week, when I drew my spending money from an ATM. Now I make two a day.

opinion&comment

It’s not relevant to the races, but most would have done some online shopping and paid bills by credit transfer.

I understand the argument but I don’t think it is true.

derstand. We are, most of us most of the time, quite happy to pay by electronic means, but it doesn’t always suit us and we want the cash option.

Michael Wolsey

When you are standing in line to pay a trackside bookie, sur rounded by a milling crowd of punters, it is easier and safer to pull a few quid from your pock et or purse, and a lot quicker, since bookies will complete the transaction in half the time it takes them to operate an elec tronic payment device.

Card and phone transactions now account for more than 60% of all payments made in Ireland.Idon’t think the switch was entirely voluntary – during the Covid crisis many traders gave us no choice but to pay by card. The habit has stuck and some of them still insist on it.

The same goes for paying at a busy food stall.

There’s not a lot of serious betting at Laytown, since pre dicting the outcome of a race run on sand is about as random as picking the winner of the Aintree Grand National.

HERE’S a time and a place for everything, they say. And the time for spending real cash money is at the races, particularly when the place is that most unusual of venues, the beach at Laytown in Co Meath.
