allowed in without clearance. Spielberg was believed to be staying in the Druid’s Glen Hotel at one point and it was also put into lock-down while he was there. Killruddery House was chosen as the location for the thriller, based on Henry James’ novella, The Turn Of The Screw, which is being produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Continued on page 6

news in brief €4 parking in Glendalough THE OPW has announced the following dates for paid parking at the Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow. A parking fee will be due for Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays starting on February 17 until May 27 and between September 1 and October 29. There is going to be a daily charge between March 26 and April 6 as well as for the months of June, July and August. Charges for buses may vary. Contractors for the OPW will collect €4 per car to use the facility. Visitors to the Glendalough Visitor Centre will be refunded this charge when they purchase admission to the Centre. Art Competition The Central Bank of Ireland recently has launched its 75th Anniversary Student Art Competition for primary and secondary school students. Wicklow students are asked to get inspired from people or events from the past 75 years and submit a coin design. The closing date for the competition is on March 16.

Glendalough’s new drop By Charisma Trant THERE seems to be no stopping those boys and girls from Glendalough Distillery as they have recently launched three new whiskeys and relaunched their traditional poitín. They also introduced a new bottle design for the range inspired by St Kevin who famously who founded the Glendalough settlement in the sixth century. All three new whiskeys, a double Barrel and seven-

year-old and 13-year-old single malts, are matured in ex-bourbon barrels and perfected in a second cask. This new look is also being introduced across their product range, including their increasingly popular Gin which was launched last year. “Our new look and bespoke bottle really brings the range together as a family, while WKH QHZ FDVN ¿QLVKHV VHW WKH whiskey apart from anything else being done in Irish whiskey,” creative director

and founder at Glendalough Distillery, Kevin Keenan told the Wicklow Voice. The Glendalough Distillery was founded in 2011 and VHW XS E\ ¿YH IULHQGV IURP Wicklow and Dublin and currently operates from a facility in Newtown. They are also planning a new visitor centre in the future. Their brand has created international interest which has seen it distributed into the lucrative North American market.

Why not volunteer this lent? By Charisma Trant THE National Council for the Blind of Ireland asks people from Wicklow to make some time to volunteer this lent. Instead of trying to give up on sweets they urge people to give up some time and really make a GL൵HUHQFH LQ WKHLU FRPPXQLW\ There are approximately1,485 people living with sight loss in Wicklow. With its three shops across Wicklow, the NCBI has a big presence in the county. The charity provides a variety RI GL൵HUHQW SUDFWLFDO DQG educational services. Aim of the NCBI is to support all people with sight loss and they are also actively involved ZLWK GL൵HUHQW DGYRFDF\ groups to help creating safe environments for people who VX൵HU IURP VLJKW ORVV Majella Bond, the area manager for Wicklow encourages people to volunteer and ensures that the volunteers play a huge part on making an impact: “Our volunteers are the backbone of our operation. They are an incredible bunch of dedicated and generous people.”

Renters are paying more than in Celtic Tiger days By Charisma Trant WICKLOW is the second most expensive county to rent in, only topped by Dublin, accordLQJ WR QHZ ¿JXUHV Rents in the county have been steadily rising during the last quarter of 2017 with lack of supply being a key driver of prices. Prices in North Wicklow are as high as in their neighbouring areas of Shankill and Killiney and many other areas across Dublin while rent in the South and West of Wicklow is in comparison much lower. With prices rising, there is also a limited amount of family houses available. According to Daft.ie there are only two three-bedroom houses for as much as €1,950 available in Bray. If renters are able to pay an additional €100 a month, four more four-bed room family homes are advertised by the website. In Greystones, a threeEHGURRP KRXVH LV R൵HUHG WR renters for €1,850. The most expensive four-bedroom house currently available to rent is a whopping €4,860 while there are cheaper houses available the number is very limited - just six properties in the entire area of Greystones. The rent is lower in the South and West of Wicklow, but the availability of houses is limited and there are currently no hous-

es vacant in Wicklow Town. Families can rent for €1,300 a three-bed room house in Arklow, but again only three properties are currently available to rent. Figures also show the average monthly rent in Dublin has risen to €1,822, which is €380 higher than at the during the Celtic Tiger peak. Wicklow follows closely with an average rent of €1,256 and Kildare with €1,212. Charities such as the Simon Communities fear that more people will become homeless if rents keep rising. The government’s cap on rent doesn’t seem to work and the ODWHVW ¿JXUHV VKRZ WKDW D VWULFWHU control is necessary. “Rent Pressure Zones and other measures cannot work without proper monitoring and enforcement by the Residential Tenancies Board.” “Tenants cannot be expected to ‘police’ this private market when they are clearly at such a huge disadvantage with continuously diminishing supply and rising prices.” Focus Ireland agrees that while in certain areas the Rent Pressure Zones has shown positive development there is still room for improvement. Mike Allen, advocacy director of Focus Ireland said: “[...] there are so many loopholes in the legislation it is still far too easy for landlords to ignore.”

County’s low divorce rates By Charisma Trant ACCORDING WR QHZ ¿Jures published by the Courts Service, Wicklow has one of the lowest divorce and judicial separation rates in the country, closely followed by Meath and Roscommon. Although, Wicklow is beaten by Ireland’s least populated county, Leitrim, which only had 17 applications for divorce in 2016.

Nationally, 4,100 couples have applied to divorce and more than 1,300 couples have applied WR VHSDUDWH LQ 7KH ¿JXUHV also show that Carlow, Dublin, Tipperary, Clare and Louth have the highest divorce rates in the whole country. However, the overall number has decreased from 4,290 to 4,126 between 2015 and 2016. More than 3,197 divorces were granted in 2016, with over one third of them in Dublin alone.

Confusion over La Touche as builders move in By Charisma Trant CONFUSION surrounds the IXWXUH RI WKH ¿YH QHZ WHUUDFHG houses and 22 modern houses on the grounds of the La Touche Hotel. On Wednesday morning, building supplies and a cherry picker arrived at the site and it was claimed that Wicklow &RXQW\ &RXQFLO KDG FRQ¿UPHG that work had begun on the site. Previous to this it was claimed by Cllr Derek Mitchell that the planning application for the La Touche Hotel itself had been withdrawn and plans to demolish and replicate the hotel had been put on ice. This, therefore, meant that building on the houses could not proceed until a conservation plan was submitted. According to correspondence from Wicklow County Council seen by the Wicklow Voice, the work has not begun.

Two of Wicklow’s brewers will take part in this year’s Alltech Craft Brews and Food Fair, in the Convention Centre Dublin from March 8- 10. Valentine’s Day and the school mid-terms have arrived and Christmas 2017 is a ship that has long-since sailed.
