Wicklow students are asked to get inspired from people or events from the past 75 years and submit a coin design. The closing date for the competition is on March 16.

Cheers! Glendalough’s new drop By Charisma Trant THERE seems to be no stopping those boys and girls from Glendalough Distillery as they have recently launched three new whiskeys and relaunched their traditional poitín. They also introduced a new bottle design for the range inspired by St Kevin who famously who founded the Glendalough settlement in the sixth century. All three new whiskeys, a double Barrel and seven-

year-old and 13-year-old single malts, are matured in ex-bourbon barrels and perfected in a second cask. This new look is also being introduced across their product range, including their increasingly popular Gin which was launched last year. “Our new look and bespoke bottle really brings the range together as a family, while WKH QHZ FDVN ¿QLVKHV VHW WKH whiskey apart from anything else being done in Irish whiskey,” creative director

They are also planning a new visitor centre in the future. Their brand has created international interest which has seen it distributed into the lucrative North American market.

Renters are paying more than in Celtic Tiger days By Charisma Trant WICKLOW is the second most expensive county to rent in, only topped by Dublin, accordLQJ WR QHZ ¿JXUHV Rents in the county have been steadily rising during the last quarter of 2017 with lack of supply being a key driver of prices. Prices in North Wicklow are as high as in their neighbouring areas of Shankill and Killiney and many other areas across Dublin while rent in the South and West of Wicklow is in comparison much lower. With prices rising, there is also a limited amount of family houses available. According to Daft.ie there are only two three-bedroom houses for as much as €1,950 available in Bray. If renters are able to pay an additional €100 a month, four more four-bed room family homes are advertised by the website. In Greystones, a threeEHGURRP KRXVH LV R൵HUHG WR renters for €1,850. The most expensive four-bedroom house currently available to rent is a whopping €4,860 while there are cheaper houses available the number is very limited - just six properties in the entire area of Greystones. The rent is lower in the South and West of Wicklow, but the availability of houses is limited and there are currently no hous-

es vacant in Wicklow Town. Families can rent for €1,300 a three-bed room house in Arklow, but again only three properties are currently available to rent. Figures also show the average monthly rent in Dublin has risen to €1,822, which is €380 higher than at the during the Celtic Tiger peak. Wicklow follows closely with an average rent of €1,256 and Kildare with €1,212. Charities such as the Simon Communities fear that more people will become homeless if rents keep rising. The government’s cap on rent doesn’t seem to work and the ODWHVW ¿JXUHV VKRZ WKDW D VWULFWHU control is necessary. “Rent Pressure Zones and other measures cannot work without proper monitoring and enforcement by the Residential Tenancies Board.” “Tenants cannot be expected to ‘police’ this private market when they are clearly at such a huge disadvantage with continuously diminishing supply and rising prices.” Focus Ireland agrees that while in certain areas the Rent Pressure Zones has shown positive development there is still room for improvement. Mike Allen, advocacy director of Focus Ireland said: “[...] there are so many loopholes in the legislation it is still far too easy for landlords to ignore.”

County’s low divorce rates By Charisma Trant ACCORDING WR QHZ ¿Jures published by the Courts Service, Wicklow has one of the lowest divorce and judicial separation rates in the country, closely followed by Meath and Roscommon. Although, Wicklow is beaten by Ireland’s least populated county, Leitrim, which only had 17 applications for divorce in 2016.

Nationally, 4,100 couples have applied to divorce and more than 1,300 couples have applied WR VHSDUDWH LQ 7KH ¿JXUHV also show that Carlow, Dublin, Tipperary, Clare and Louth have the highest divorce rates in the whole country. However, the overall number has decreased from 4,290 to 4,126 between 2015 and 2016. More than 3,197 divorces were granted in 2016, with over one third of them in Dublin alone.

According to correspondence from Wicklow County Council seen by the Wicklow Voice, the work has not begun.

“To my knowledge no Commencement Notice has been submitted yet and therefore the developer has not indicated his intention to commence the development. “What might be causing confusion is that the developer has agreed a phasing programme with the Planning Authority, which sets out what parts of the development he can commence works on. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more

COMPETITION of the week INFO EVENING of the week Amorous Common Frogs! ( Pic: Justin Ivory) Love is in the air! With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we humans will be getting “all loved up. But this is also the month for amorous amphibians – in particular the Common Frog. Frogs, being cold-blooded (ectothermic), become inactive and hibernate during winter. During February (sometimes in mild years as early as January), Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) begin to emerge from hibernation to hop, skip and jump their frenzied way towards traditional breeding sites of ponds, pools, ditches etc. The males are usually first to arrive and begin a chorus of low croaking to serenade the females. The males literally grab the females as they arrive at the spawning sites (no time for shrinking violets here!). A male will jump on the females back and wrap its front legs around her body, clinging on with specially adapted ‘nuptial pads’ on each of its “thumbs. A female can attract a whole host of suitors who will all try

ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman

WE DON’T KNOW WHAT’S BURIED HERE Mermaid Arts Centre, Main Street, Bray, February 22, 8pm, ₏16/ 14

Eleanor Oliphant has learned how to survive but not how to live Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend. Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life.

Except, sometimes, everything. One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. An astonishing story of life.

Tina and Bernadette, are digging a hole in the ground. They dig every day, methodically, looking for what has been hidden from them. They are Magdalene Ghosts. They heard about Tuam on the radio. One of them is digging to find her baby’s bones, the other is digging to expose the

Frog spawn (Pic: Justin Ivory) to jump and cling onto her together, so much so that some females end up drowning from this over-zealous attention. While the male is attached, the female starts to lay her eggs which the male simultaneously fertilises. Each egg is covered by jelly which swells and offers some protection to the developing embryo. All these jelly covered eggs stick together to form the familiar masses of frogspawn. Two to three weeks later the tiny tadpoles will emerge. Get out in the next few weeks and you could be treated to a great spectacle! Just remember not to disturb the frogs and that it is illegal to remove frog spawn without a licence. So what are you waiting for – hop to it!

The Young Offenders follows the coming-of-age adventures of lovable rogues Conor and Jock as they navigate their awkward teenage years, hatching plans and adventures to help distract from their tough home lives and their inability to stay out of trouble at school. Alex Murphy and Chris Walley reprise their roles from the smash hit feature film on which the television series is based. Also returning is

Sash style windows are becoming more and more popular too and of course your casement windows. What is the approximate cost nowadays to replace the windows and doors on a standard three bed semidetached home from a variety of window quality levels? Well, we can do a 3 bed semi-detached from â‚Ź3,500 but again there is no average price as such, it depends entirely on what the customers want themselves and the work involved. For example, replacing existing windows and doors

would require a lot more labor time than a new fit. For those doing a self-build project what advice from a windows and doors perspective would you offer?
