Duo to cycle home across 28 countries A YOUNG Co. Waterford man from a farming background and his friend are geared up to cycle home from Sydney across 28 countries to raise much needed funds for two children’s charities. Paddy Flynn from Knockalavalla, Carrick-onSuir, and friend Daithi Harrison from Tipperary, will cycle from Sydney to Dublin and run an ultra-marathon in all 28 countries to raise money for Medical Research Foundation Crumlin and the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. Their odyssey will kick off on August 4. “Paddy has been working in Sydney for nine years laying light rail tracks for rail travel and is intending to return home here to our dairy farm to make his living here,” said his father Michael who, with his wife Mary, has 110ac and are milking 64 cows. “Paddy hopes to go full-time farming if the figures stack up

and is open to looking at all options, from increasing herd size to maybe even getting a little outside employment if the figures show that is what is needed to support himself and his father and mother. “An income increase is needed for us all to be supported by the farm.” Paddy and Daithi, their 30s, agreed to cycle back to Ireland and do an ultra-marathon in every country on their way home. They decided that they would begin their journey outside the door of Sydney Children’s hospital in Randwick and the adventure will end at the doors of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Paddy Flynn came up with the idea for the trip two years ago and the duo have been ‘chipping away’ on it ever since. “They expect the journey across three continents to last 12-18 months.”

A MEAL made entirely from food waste is a festival highlight at the 11th Waterford Harvest Festival, which takes place September 6th to 8th. The Wasted Supper Club, held at GROW HQ, the home of not-for-profit social enterprise GIY, will highlight the one million tonnes of food wasted every year in Ireland. This year’s pro-

gramme of more than 70 free and ticketed events features cooking demos, grow-it-yourself workshops, local food markets, child-friendly events and more, all taking place across Ireland’s oldest city. Commenting on the launch of the programme, Festival Director Tommie Ryan said: “At Waterford Harvest Festival, we are passionate

about sustainably sourced food and reducing food waste. We are very excited to see GROW HQ head chef JB Dubois, along with Chefs’ Manifesto ambassador Conor Spacey (Food Space) host a zero waste meal for 50 lucky diners to launch GROW HQ as the Irish hub for Chefs’ Manifesto – a global community of chefs.”

ITHE global publishing consortium Agora have announced 135 additional jobs in its offices in Woodlock House, Portlaw, as well as Waterford City. In total, the Agora companies in Waterford employ 270 people. The additional 135 roles will be in all areas of the South East operations; digital publishing, technical and customer support but primarily in software development. The Waterford offices will be the largest hub located outside of the Baltimore US campus, which comprises 13 buildings and 1,300 employees. Senator Paudie Coffey played a big role in bringing Agora to Waterford. Bill Bonner, founder of Agora said: “After 20 years in Waterford, we continue our commitment to Ireland’s south east which has established itself as a strategic location for a number of multinational corporations and continues to capture talent from the capital with the offer of a better quality of life.”

Cath lab’s closure ‘is a constant concern’

THE Fianna Fáil TD for Waterford Mary Butler has said contingencies must be in place if the National Equipment Replacement Programme results in the temporary closure of the cath lab in University Hospital Waterford (UHW). Deputy Butler said the potential 12-week closure of the cath lab was “massively concerning” and that it pressed the need for the HSE to expedite the procurement of a second cath lab. “The current situation of 9am-5pm cardiac cover on a five day a week basis is a constant concern and to add to this, we may now have no intervention care for up to 12 weeks,” she told WaterfordLive.ie. “While the replacement programme is necessary, the focus now has to be on what contingencies will be put in place, how will they be communicated, and how will the management restore patient confidence. “With the mobile unit only fitted to do exploratory work, full cath lab services could be missing for 12 weeks in UHW. “Understandably, I have been contacted by constituents who are deeply concerned about the lapse in service but also maddened as they had to hear this

news from the media,” she said. “Public confidence is seriously eroded. If the Government wants to make this second cath lab a priority, they would have done by now.” Deputy Butler said she was calling on Minister for Health Simon Harris to ensure contingency plans were in place in the event there was a closure of the existing cath lab. “He must also put pressure on his officials in the Department of Health to see progress in expediting the second cath lab for the region, which is now at design stage,” she said. A cath lab is part of a hospital’s cardiac department, caring for patients with heart disease. There are around 20 cath labs in Dublin and several more in hospital-based cardiac centres across the country. A cath lab is both an examination and treatment room, which allows diagnostic and interventional procedures to be carried out. Patients who experience chest pain caused by blockages in the arteries to the heart, or those who need a pacemaker to correct abnormal heart rhythms, are referred there.

It all adds up to great maths fun

MATHS Ireland, co-ordinated by Calmast, Waterford Institute of Technology’s groundbreaking STEM engagement centre, is once again celebrating maths during Spraoi. As one of the festival’s creative partners, Calmast brings workshops, demos and activities to thousands of people over two days of Spraoi. Spraoi is a free urban festival with performers from all over the world taking place this Bank Holiday weekend on the streets of Waterford. The all-weekend festival features Irish and international artists, street performers and musicians and attracts more than 100,000 visitors over three days. Ben Dolan, Maths Ireland Digital Engagement Manager,

says “We’re delighted to be part of such an inspiring festival and to bring maths to the streets of Waterford. Maths Ireland will present hands-on puzzles, games and other activities for all on Hanover Street, August 3rd and 4th , from 1pm.” For several years now Hanover Street turns into STEM Street during the Spraoi weekend. “Everyone is welcome to engage in exciting experiments, intriguing chemistry demos, hands-on physics, and much more,” the Festival Director said. Calmast, the Physics Buskers, Mathematical Entertainer Caroline Ainslie and Juggling Scientist James Soper, will also present their shows in Garter Lane Theatre and on Gladstone Street.

€690,000 to improve home heat efficiency

COUNCILLOR Joe Kelly has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Housing, Planning & Local Government, Eoghan Murphy of the allocation of over €25 million

in funding for the upgrading of the energy efficiency of local authority homes throughout the country. Of this amount, Waterford City & County Council will

receive €690,556 to be spent on improving the energy efficiency of local authority stock. Speaking about the allocation Cllr Kelly said: “I welcome this funding announcement as it will allow us to carry out badly needed energy efficiency work on some of our housing stock. “I expect thousands of our houses need to be upgraded but as always, there is never enough money available, but we can get some work done with this money.” Cllr Kelly said he a number of council tenants who him contacted him about basic improvement such as attic insulation and repairs to damaged windows and doors needed to their houses. “These are low cost repairs and WCCC should be able to do these quickly, but the tenants have been waiting years for the work to be done. “While I welcome the €690,556, we need much more than this on an annual basis to make a dent in the number of houses that need the energy efficiency work done and wish the Minister to release the allocation now.”

Home from the sea, Jim who was five weeks paddling his surfboard A TRAMORE man who set off over five weeks ago on a quest to ‘paddleboard’ around Ireland, has returned home in triumph. Jim Swift left Tramore on June 21st in an attempt to become the first person to circumnavigate the island by paddling a surfboard with his hands, as opposed to standing on the surfboard, and to raise money for Waterford Hospice. He spent between five and 10 hours each day on his

board, after setting off towards Cork on his first day and then travelling in a clockwise direction. His father and brother accompanied him at different stages of the journey, on a relay basis, and he camped out most nights during the intervening weeks, spending an occasional night in a hostel. A large crowd gathered at ladies’ slip in Tramore at the weekend, and along the seaside town’s promenade, to welcome

Jim Swift home to dry land. Dozens of surfers also made their way out to see him as he rounded Brownstown Head and arrived into Tramore Bay, as did two RNLI boats. He was greeted on the slip by his wife Meadhbh, as well as five-year-old Deici and threeyear-old Art, along with many other family members and friends. “Glad to be home,” he said on arrival, as he hugged and kissed his family.

hen you apply for life insurance, your premiums will be mainly based on your “risk class,” which is defined by an insurer’s “underwriting guidelines.” The amount of cover and the length of the term are the other pricing factors. The better your risk class, the lower your premiums will be. Your ability to get affordable life insurance will be based on your life expectancy and risk factors. Underwriters will look at your income and lifestyle, medical history and overall health, your family’s medical history and any hazardous recreational sports or occupations. Illnesses suffered by your family members after age 60 shouldn’t affect your premiums. Some life insurers are more aggressive in determining your risk class, and they may put you in a more preferred class (meaning lower premiums) than another company would. For example, someone with a history of high blood pressure who’s on medication for it might pay less with one life

news in brief Bank Holiday drink drive warning

Regional Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael Finn has urged motorist to drive carefully over the holiday weekend. He said road safety continued to be a high priority for An Garda Síochána in the South East. “We are determined to strengthen our resolve in this regard and I am urging motorists within the region to be increasingly vigilant over the upcoming August Bank Holiday weekend to avoid fatalities and serious injuries on our roads,” he said

Night this driver’s number was up...

A driver stopped by Gardaí had a Lotto scratch card as an insurance disc, with the motorist’s tax out of date since February of last year. Local Gardaí said: “The driver picked an unlucky scratch card! His vehicle was seized, and a court appearance to follow.”.

Stradbally swim

A Waterford City and County Council is advising bathers not to swim at Stradbally Cove temporarily. This is due to a recent increase in the levels of bacteria in the river. The council will continue monitoring the situation and will give updated advice in due course..

Since she starred in ‘Taxi Driver’ as a teenage prostitute Jodie Foster’s career has never been anything other than stellar. A two time Oscar winner and one of those actors whose appearance in any film immediately raises expectations and then follows through and delivers she is one of the best actors out there. The fact that she really hasn’t starred in many movies in the last number of years is puzzling but when she does appear you just know that it is going to be good. In this film she runs and staffs the Artemis Hotel which specializes in giving medical attention to criminals. You have to be a member to get in and you can’t enter with any weapons. These are two rules that Foster, who is the sole admisitrator and nurse in the facility, adheres to without exceptions. Except on this particular night in question she doesn’t know that it is these two rules that will operate in the favour of any assassin who is out to get a top criminal boss. The night starts out like any other night with a few walk ins who need to be seen, but no major traumas. Then a woman comes on the security cameras and says that she needs to be seen. Foster refuses because she isn’t a member. Then the woman says that she knows Foster and knew her daughter. Foster is thrown, jolted by memories of a previous life. She secretly smuggles the woman in and sees to her. This is when the proverbial begins to hit the fan elsewhere in Artemis Hotel. A top crime boss has been attacked and needs to be seen immediately. No one realises that it was done deliberately to get him to the Artemis Hotel where he will have no security around him and the only person who will be waiting for him is the assassin. The assassin is already in Artemis, she walked in, a member, with a few minor cuts. She duly kills the crime boss but the big question now is how will everyone get out? The crime boss’ son has arrived and when he realises that his father has been murdered he is out for blood. There is a lot of tension and action in this movie and Foster as the shuffling, aged, nervy nurse is brilliant. It’s surprising that this movie didn’t get more attention when it first came out but if you have the chance to see it then do. It’s definitely worth the watch.

€100m beef aid ‘will help with’ farm hardships

THE Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM), details of which were announced on Monday last by the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed, will help hard pressed beef farmers in Waterford, according to Fine Gael Minister Michael D’Arcy. “This new €100 million aid measure will be funded by the Government and the European Union. The litmus test will be for normal market conditions and prices to have resumed by the time of weanling sales this coming September. “This measure will be funded by a combination of EU exceptional aid and Exchequer support, provided in light of the difficult circumstances that Irish beef farmers have been facing as a result of market volatility and uncertainty arising out of Brexit. “I am keenly aware that the past few months have been very difficult for beef farmers here and across the country,” he said. “There has been a prolonged and exceptional period of

depressed prices since last autumn, with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the outcome of Brexit, among other factors, contributing to this market disturbance.” Minister D’Arcy said the availability of this EU and Exchequer support, together with the Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) introduced earlier this year, provided an injection of up to €120m in aid for the beef sector in 2019. Aid will be paid on adult cattle slaughtered between September 24th .2018 and May 12th, 2019, at a rate of €100 per animal subject to a maximum of 100 finished animals per herd. Aid will also be paid on suckler cows that calved in 2018, at a rate of €40 per animal subject to a maximum of 40 sucklers per herd. BEAM will open for applications during the third week of August. Applications will be accepted online through AgFood.ie

citywide Talk to us SAMARITANS Waterford and South East ENCOURAGE MEN TO SEEK HELP & ‘TALK TO US’ at Plunkett Train Station, Waterford Volunteers mark 24/7 to remind people they’re there around the clock A new survey commissioned by Samaritans Ireland released on July 24th 2019 shows that there is still a stigma around men seeking help when they are struggling to cope. One in four men (25%) in Ireland who had suicidal thoughts in the last 12 months did not reach out for help due to feeling like they had no one to trust, with 37% feeling like a burden, it showed. The survey also found that some of the main reasons why these men find life tough and struggle include job loss/employment issues (38%), relationship or family problems (38%), and debt or financial worries (37%). The findings were released as Samaritans volunteers across the country mark ‘Talk To Us’ on 24/7 to highlight that they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. SE economy is doing very well, despite Brexit WHILE challenges including uncertainty over the impact of Brexit remain, the South East regional economy is performing strongly with positive indicators for further investment and jobs growth. according to a new report published last week. The summer 2019 edition of ‘Economy at a Glance’ from the Ireland South East Development Office (ISEDO) shows the region has grown steadily over the last seven years across all key economic indicators. With 5,900 new jobs created across Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford between the first quarters of 2018 and 2019, the report shows an estimated €700m in company investments committed to the region over the last 12 months alone. These investments include

substantial projects from successful global firms such as MSD, Bausch + Lomb and Glanbia while companies launching or expanding in the region include Immedis (Kilkenny), Sabrina Manufacturing (Littleton, Co Tipperary) and Carne Financial (Kilkenny and Wexford). Further new foreign direct investment includes announcements from GrandPad (Gorey, Co Wexford) and Allstate Sales Group Inc (Waterford). Just last week, LMC announced the creation of 200 jobs at the former Procter & Gamble plant in Nenagh, Co Tipperary while the Agora Companies are this week announcing the creation of 135 additional jobs in Waterford. Other positive developments highlighted in the report include the government’s agreement in principle in June to provide €5m

of exchequer funding towards a €12m runway extension at Waterford Airport that is also being backed with private sector investment of €5m and support totalling €2m from the local authorities in Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford. Local authorities have also successfully combined to secure €10.6m funding for a greenway which will link New Ross to Waterford city centre where it will join the existing Waterford Greenway to Dungarvan, Co Waterford. The Suir Blueway opened between Carrick-onSuir and Cahir, Co Tipperary in May also strengthens the region’s tourism and leisure offering. Further regional collaboration is evident from the recent launch of ‘Engineering the South East’, an industry-led cluster addressing skills needs in engineering.

Gardai in county raids over child porn

Opinion&Comment

Protecting the Vulnerable

T

he Primetime investigation into the running of a number of creches run by ‘Hyde and Seek’ in Dublin made for very uncomfortable viewing. And the longer the programme went on the worse things got. Notwithstanding the horrendous health and safety violations that each of the creches showed, such as the flouting of fire regulations and the wildly inappropriate levels of child to adult ratios, it was perhaps the casual cruelty and disinterest in the children in her charge shown by the owner and manager Anne Davy that was most upsetting, To the general viewer who wouldn’t have known any of the children shown on the programme it was upsetting enough but for the parents of the children involved it must have been devastating. A number of years ago the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that he felt areas such as childcare should not be run as businesses or for profit. Clearly, even then, he was living in a fantasy world. Childcare is a huge industry and the profits amassed by Hyde and Seek, roughly 2.4 million euro, in a few short years attests to this. Any business has to be well regulated and nowhere is this most apparent than with those who are dealing with the most vulnerable in our society. One other point made in the programme was the role of Tusla and the question marks over it’s involvement. It is clear from the RTE report that there are massive failings. And it is not the only sector. Hot on the heels of this investigation there was another report issued that looked into the treatment of those in care homes for those with mental health issues and it found that the ‘dignity and privacy’ of people in too many homes were not being respected. A society should not be judged by its GDP, prestige projects, the showy wealth of it’s elite or how it feels those outside of the country perceive it. A society should be judged on how it treats it’s weakest and it’s most vulnerable and on the whole we do pretty well in this regard. Certainly better than other Western countries who for all their vaunted pride in leading the free world show little material concern for the poorest and most vulnerable. That is not to say that we can’t do better. Obviously we can as the RTE programme as well as other reports and commissions in multiple areas have shown. The point is that when it comes to the most vulnerable, and who could be more vulnerable than a young child, there has to be an ever-present vigilance on behalf of the authorities to ensure that things are being run correctly. Hyde and Seek was run for the benefit and profit of the people who owned the creches and the children came a very poor second. When these sort of priorities are the overriding concerns inevitably there are going to be major problems. It is a serious lesson to be learned for many sectors in Irish society.

Our View

Tributes paid to hurling legend

TRIBUTES have been pouring in following the passing of former Waterford former hurling team secretary Jim Dee. Mr Dee, from Dungarvan, died peacefully last week after a long illness. He died at Waterford University Hospital surrounded by his family. Dungarvan GAA Club paid tribute to the “club legend”. A club spokesperson said: “Jim’s association with the club goes back to the late 1950s when he played minor and junior

championship games for the blues. When the club was experiencing a difficult time both on and off the field in the late 1960s and early 70s, Jim was one of a group who stuck with Dungarvan as a player and a committee member. “Outside of the club, Jim is especially known for the service he gave to the county senior hurlers. He was noted for his hard working ethic his competence and his efficiency in the role.

Yogi-Bears’ Picnic!!!: Pictured enjoying a spot of lunch as well as the views over Tramore Bay from the Coastguard Station & Cultural Centre in Tramore, were a group of yogis who enjoyed a morning of both yin (slow/cooling) and yang (dynamic/heating) styles of yoga taught by John Stokes, Yogafest & Yoga for Everyone and Olivia Walsh, Olivia Walsh Vinyasa & Anjali Yoga Waterford. Lunch and snacks on the day were prepared by Living Food Chef Juicie Jim and consisted of beautiful and healthy raw food salad, no bake flapjacks and fermented water kefir as well as herbal teas. If this sounds like your cup of tea, more yin/yang yoga & lunch mornings are planned. Contact John @ 086-8572604.

GARDAI carried out two searches in Waterford last week as part of Operation Ketch. Operation Ketch, which began in February 2018, is a proactive, intelligence-led policing operation co-ordinated by the Garda National Protection Services Bureau (GNPSB). The objectives of this operation are to target persons suspected of possessing, importing and distributing online child abuse material (child pornography). And to identify child protection concerns at suspect addresses and engage with TUSLA. In 2019 to date, a total of 72 addresses have been searched as part of the operation. In 2018,a total 137 addresses were searched during the course Operation Ketch. The most recent phase of Operation Ketch took place from July 22-25. During this phase, warrants were obtained from district courts pursuant to the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998.

Just wo weeks to learn Spanish? No problemo!

I

I HAVE two weeks to learn Spanish. I’m quite relaxed about it - and so I should be, for I do the same thing every year. Well, not exactly the same. Some years I learn French or Italian, depending on where I am going. I don’t know why I bother. The only natives I talk to on holiday are waiters and taxi drivers and the only things I need to tell them in their own language, they can understand perfectly well in mine. But there seems to me something crass, fundamentally ill-mannered, about opening a conversation in English and presuming you will be understood and that you will receive a reply in the same tongue. So this year, as every year, I get out the trusty phrase book. It’s looking a bit dog-eared and I suspect it is way out of date. Its happy model holidaymaker is still inquiring about the exchange rate for the peseta and some of its handy phrases seem, well, a little past the point of usefulness. “Sorry operator, I’ve got the wrong number’’, for example, and “excuse me, in

Michael Wolsey

which carriage may I smoke?’’ Lovely grammar, though, and very polite. “How much do you charge for one night,’’ seems open to misinterpretation in a lessinnocent age. And what’s this one-hour service we are looking for? “Servicio de una hora, por favour.” Nowadays in Spain, one hour is the time it takes to

get any service and anyone so rash as to complain is likely to be told to ‘vete a hacer punetas’, which the ancient Eyewitness Travel Guide translates as ‘clear off’ but a Spanish speaker tells me is a bit ruder than that. My new guide comes as a surprise, all the same. The trusty Eyewitness was full of Buenos dias, Buenos tardes, and cheery conversation-builders along the lines of “it’s a lovely day” and “that meal was very good”. Steve Sparks’s online guide is a more confrontational affair altogether. “That’s too expensive,” he insists. “I can’t afford it. You’re cheating me.’’ Fortunately, he also provides the Spanish for, “Please there has been a mistake ... it was a misunderstanding ... I haven’t done anything wrong.’’ You could insist “Quero hablar con an abogad’’ (I want to talk to a lawyer) but if you don’t want to blow the entire holiday budget you might be better to settle for “puedo pagar la multa ahora?” (can I just pay the fine now?). My Eyewitness Guide was a pleasant stroll through a land of smiling café owners and helpful hoteliers. This new one sounds

like Dublin’s Temple Bar on a Saturday night. “Marchese!’’ (go away), “Ladron!’’ (thief) and “Llame a la policia!’’ (call the police). Too late for the police, I fear. “Cubranse!” (take cover) “Hay disparos!’’ (there’s a shooting). “Can I use your mobile phone?’’ is a question unheard of when my Eyewitness Guide was published. But why do you want it? “Quiero hablar con la embajada” (I want to talk to the ambassador). Que? Because “Necesito medical attention’’ (I need medical attention), “estoy enfermo’’ (I’m ill), “hubo un accidente” (there’s been an accident) or “he sido violada’’ (I’ve been raped). Clearly the world was a happier place in the days of the Eyewitness Guide when questions included “can you help me work the machine?’’ “can I have a blow-dry?’’ (no, blow-dry!) and “can I get a 36-exposure colour film”. To which Mr Sparks has the modern answers. “Que va! Me esta tomando el pelo! Ni de cona!’’ Look them up yourself. I’m going back to French. It’s less violent.

House & Home

Thinking of renovating your home? Among the myriad options on how to go about the task, one of the things you should really consider is what improvements will add the most value to your home, so it has the potential to make you money, and also ways to make it more energy efficient which will save you money! Windows & Doors One way to achieve both of these objectives is to look at replacing your windows and doors. This will update the exterior appearance of your home

and an upgrade in this area will contribute to great energy efficiency for your home. You could even go a step further and add to the square footage of your home by building a sun room or conservatory! But if this is all more than the budget will allow, you have the option of improving the performance of your existing windows and doors with some essential maintenace and repair of seals, hinges, locks, maybe even the glass itself. Create curb appeal Landscaping is one of the best

and easiest, most affordable ways to increase your home’s value. A clean and clear entrance way with some well thought out paving and planting can make your home look much more inviting. Having a lawn and plenty of shrubbery not only improves your home’s appearance but you’ll also be doing your bit for the environment, inviting bees and birds to visit and absorbing CO2. Grow your home ... or improve the layout A good builder can make a massive difference when it comes to altering or adding to the layout of your home. Opening up smaller rooms to create more free flowing family friendly and light filled rooms can really breathe new life into a house. Maybe for practical reasons, it would make more sense to add another bedroom or bathroom to your home, or to extend the kitchen further into your back garden, or if the front garden allows, create a wrap around porch/extension. Before making any alterations, talk to the professionals, and don’t forget to check out what grants may be available to you to help with the costs.

Beautiful Butterflies

book of the week

with Justin Ivory

Last weekend half of the East Coast flocked to Bray to see the annual spectacle of the Bray Air Display. Well with the glorious weather we have had of late we are currently being treated to spectacular air displays anywhere there are a few flowers. These displays are more about beauty and grace rather than speed and power. Of course I am referring to our beautiful butterflies. Ireland has 32 resident and 3 common migrant butterfly species. Below is a selection of some that are on the wing at the moment. So take the time to go out and see these little beauties and even better report your sightings to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Enjoy! (All photos Justin Ivory)

EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU by Celeste Ng

The Parachute Murder Plot Virgin Media 2 Monday 5th August 10pm

The Current War Released 26th July 2019

Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee; a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue - in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’s case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the centre of every party. When Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, James is consumed by guilt and sets out on a reckless path that may destroy his marriage. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to make someone accountable.

Fiona Bruce examines the case of Emile Cilliers, who was convicted in May of the attempted murder of his wife Victoria, having tampered with her parachute before a routine skydive. He also deliberately caused a gas leak at the family home. With access to hours of police tapes, thousands of the couple’s intimate text messages, unseen home movies and interviews with key people - some of whom are speaking publicly for the first time - Fiona goes beyond the headlines, shedding new light on the crime itself, the investigation and the subsequent prosecution.

2017 American historical drama film directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and written by Michael Mitnick. Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse - the greatest inventors of the industrial age - engage in a battle of technology and ideas that will determine whose electrical system will power the new century. Backed by J.P. Morgan, Edison dazzles the world by lighting Manhattan. But Westinghouse, aided by Nikola Tesla, sees fatal flaws in Edison’s direct current design. Westinghouse and Tesla bet everything on risky and dangerous alternating current.

5th Anniversary MARIE MADIGAN

In Loving Memory

10th Anniversary JENNIFER FITZPATRICK

Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear

8th Anniversary KITTY (CATHERINE) JONES

2nd Anniversary CATHERINE MORRISSEY

10th Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance Michael WALSH

4th Anniversary PADDY COLLOPY David and Robbie

In loving memory of Marie Madigan, late of 14 Parliament St, Waterford, who died on the 4th August 2014. Mass will be offered on Saturday 10th August at 6:15 in St. Johns Church. They say memories are golden well maybe that is true. I never wanted memories, I only wanted you. A million times I needed you, a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place no one could ever fill. If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane, I’d walk the path to heaven and bring you back again Your time on earth has ended, And nothing seems the same. -From your loving husband Jim xxx We never knew that August day, That sorrow was so near, That God was going to take you The mam we loved so dear, Your pleasures were simple And your wants were few, You did not deserve what you went through, In our home there is a picture, With a face more precious than gold, And to us whom loved & lost you, Your face will never grow old, To your place of rest we travel, The hardest part of all. Is to have to leave you there. - From your son Joe, daughter in law Rosemary and grandchildren Eoin, Niamh and Aisling Mam, You gave us everything you had, Your time, your love & care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your life you lived unselfishly, With you’re gentle loving ways, No verse can say, No flowers repay, The wonderful mother, We lost that day. - From your son Barry, daughter in law Miriam and grandchildren Abby and Neil.

In loving memory of Kitty (Catherine) Jones late of 117 Hennessy’s Road, whose 8th Anniversary occurs on the 6th of August. Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky, Thought Heaven and earth divides us, We are never far apart, For you are always in my thoughts, And forever in my heart. - Always missed & loved, your daughter Adrienne xox

70th Birthday Remembrance Josephine Burke 70th Birthday remembrance for Josephine Burke, late of St. Dominicks Place. We were honoured and privileged, To have you as a friend, You never said goodbye to us, Perhaps it’s just as well. We could never have said, Goodbye to such a great friend, We cannot send a birthday card, We know you understand, Flowers instead of birthday cards, Tears instead of wishes, You left us precious memories, Of all the special times we shared, Though absent you are alwas in our hearts. - Happy 70th, your friends Sandra, Noeleen, Trish, Jean and Kathleen. Silent thoughts of you today, Hold memories that will last forever, No need for words except to say, You are loved and remembered every day. - Happy 70th, from Claire and Peter.

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. L.H. 10.4.19

In loing memory of Catherine (Kitty) Morrissey, late of 81 Central Avenue, Lisduggan, who died on 30th July 2017. Sometimes I think i see you, As I walk along the street, Sometimes I hear you call me, As I’m drifting off to sleep, Always I want to tell you, Of all the things I’ve done, Or as I listen to the words, Of a song that you have sung, Often I feel so sad, That the tears start to flow, It’s the I really miss you Mam, More than anyone can know. Sometimes I feel so lonely, And shed some silent tears, I seem to hear you whisper, Don’t worry I am here, I tell you that I miss you more, With every passing day. Again I hear you whisper, I am never far away. - Forever in ur hearts, your loving daughter Ann and son in law Gerry. A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best the world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind, To hear your voice, to see you smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be our dearest wish to day, Though absent, you are always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. - sadly missed and always remembered, your loving grand daughter Louise and her husband Keith. Sad is the heart that loved you Silent the tears that fall, Living my life without you Is the hardest part of all, As I held your hand that evening, I knew I would have to part With the kind and loving mother Whom I loved with all my heart, So rest in peace dear mother And thank you for all you have done, I pray that God has given you The crown you have truly won, - Loved and missed every day, your loving grand daughter and god daughter Emma. Nanny, Your needs were simple, Your wants were few, If your family were happy So were you. A heart of gold, A life so true, Loved & respected By all you knew. Always willing, helpful & kind, What lovely memories You left behind. - Loved always by your grand son Ian. Loving you is easy, We do it every day, Missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. - Always remembered by your great grandchildren Lauren, Adam Nadia, Ethan and Shane. PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. Come to my assistance in this great need (ask for favour). I will be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour you as my special and powerful patron. Amen. Promise publication and favour will be granted K.G.

In loving memory of Paddy Collopy, late of 75 Doyle Street, whose 4th Anniversary occurs on 4th August. Mass will be offered on Sunday 4th August at 11:30 in Ballybricken Church. God looked around his garden And saw an empty space, He then looked down from Heaven And saw your tired face, He wrapped his arms around you And whispered Come to rest, His garden must be beautiful, Paddy, because He only takes the best. -Always remembered by your brother Michael We cannot bring the old days back When we were all together, But those we love don’t go away They live with us forever, The gates of heaven opened wide, The angels lined up side by side, A special guest was on his way The day God called you home to stay. -Sadly missed by your brother Tommy, sister in law Angela and nephew Kieran Your name is often mentioned, Our thoughts are with you still You haven’t been forgotten, You know you never will, Hoping you are happy In your heavenly home above, This is your Anniversary, We send you all our love, Will those who think of Paddy today A little prayer to Jesus say. - Remembered always by your sister Mary and nephews

Acknowledgement ANTHONY HANRAHAN

Paddy you had a smile for everyone, You had a heart of gold, You left the sweetest memories, This world could ever hold To us you were someone special, Someone kind and true, You will never be forgotten For we thought the world of you. - Missed always by your nephew Paul, Suzanne, Gavin and Emma The flowers we place upon your grave Will wither and decay, But all the love we have for you Will never go away. To us you are someone special, What more is there to say, We only wish with all our hearts That you were here today. - Not forgotten by your nephew Michael, Aoife and Harry A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best the world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind, To hear your voice, to see you smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be our dearest wish to day, Though absent, you are always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. - Always remembered by your sister Eileen and brother in law Dick. I held your hand that day, I knew we soon would part, I watched you slowly slip away But you will never leave my heart, Time may hide the sadness Like a smile can hide a tear, But memories last forever For an uncle I loved so dear, It broke my heart to lose you, You did not go alone, For a part of me went with you The day God called you home. - Never forgotten by your niece Sharon and Derek.

7th Anniversary PADRAIC MCKEOWN

In loving memory of Jennifer Fitzpatrick, 8 Birch Drive, Birchwood, Waterford, who died 26th July, 2009.

In loving memory of Michael Walsh, late of Belvedere Ave, who died 20th July 2009. Anniversary mass takes place at 11:30am on Sunday 4th August in St. Paul’s Church. When we are need of comfort, We walk down memory lane, There we see you smiling, We talk with you again, And as we wander sowly back, We seem to hear you say, Don’t grieve, don’t cry, my family, We’ll meet again some day. - Loved and missed by your wife Nell and all your loving family. You were very kind and thoughtful, With a warm and loving heart, And when other people needed help, You always played your part, You’re thought of every single day, Whatever time of year, But somehow more than ever, Now your special day is here, No present can be given, And that’s really very hard, But there is a world f love inside, This special little card, Each memory is shining bright, And treasured dearly too. But memories can’t take the place, Of someone so special like you

We the family of the late Tony Hanrahan would ike to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with us on Tony’s recent passing. To all who offered words of comfort, mass cards, floral tribute, we thank you most gratefully. We would like to thank Fr Terry Langford, who celebrated a lovely mass and for the lovely music and singing by the Holy Family Choir. A special thank you to all his neighbours and friends who had shown him great kindness. We would also like to thank John Thompson Funeral Directors for their professionalism and kindness shown to us in this difficult time. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, we trust this acknowledgement would be acceptable to everyone as a token of our grateful appreciation.

In loving memory of a dear husband and father Padraic McKeown who died 5th August 2012 R.I.P. Anniversary Mass for Padraic will be offered in St Paul’s Church on Monday 5th August at 10:30a.m. You were so full of family life, So proud of all we did, The smallest gesture touched your heart, And for all our lives you lived, You were always there for everyone, No task too big or small, But most of all you gave us love, The greatest gift of all. Today we light a candle and say a little prayer, We go down memory lane And know that you are there, Our heart still aches with sadness, Secret tears still flow, Just how much we miss you Padraic, No one will ever know. -Always remembered and sadly missed by your wife Margaret, daughters Fiona, Bernie, Deirdre and son Patrick.

- From Partner Philip, son Seàn and daughter Saoirse. . Although we smile And make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, And when old times we do recall, That’s when we miss you most of all. - From Jill, Gerry, Seàn, Cìara and Sara Sweet is your memory Dear is your name, Deep in our hearts you will always remain, It does not take a special day For us to think of you, Each mass we hear, Each prayer we say Is offered up to you. - From Breda and the O’Sullivan family.

2nd Anniversary MICHAEL MORRISSEY

In loving memory of Paddy McDonald, late of Naas and Waterford who died on 1st August 2017. Today is the anniversary of the day I lost you, And for a time it felt as though my life had ended too, No farewell words were spoken, n time to say goodbye, You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. A thousand words won’t bring you back, I know because I’ve tried, And neither will a million tears, I know because I’ve cried, Thank you Paddy for the times we shared, For the love you gave and te way you cared. - Love and miss you every day, your loving wife Maria xx. Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same, It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side, And though we cannot see you, You are always by our sides, Our family chain is broken and nothing feels the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again - Love and miss you Dad from Shane, Karen and Elaine, Maria, Chris and baby Oran xx. His smiling way and pleasant face, Are a pleasure to recall, He had a kindly word for each, And died beloved by all. Some day we hope to meet him, Some day we know not when, To clasp his hand in the better land, Never to part again. - Loved and missed by your brothers and sisters and extended family.

Walsh the hero as Blues take points

Waterford striker Blues fans celebrate the winning goal against Dean Walsh was the hero UCD at the Belfield Bowlon Friday night last. for the Blues as he climbed off the bench to fire home a late winner to give the Blues all three points. This was a tight and close encounter against UCD in the Airtricity Premier League played at the Belfield Bowl on Friday night last Waterford manager Alan Reynolds was delighted with the three points and this win takes the pressure off after his side by Paul Eliott went six games without a win. Blues keeper Matt Connor was in the action after seven minutes play, UCD striker Liam Kerrigan took on Maxi Kougoun inside the after missing the last couple of the net Blues keeper Matt Conbox but his powerful shot was games with a shoulder injury, nor showed his class between superbly saved by the Blues he picked a pass from Michael the posts to keep UCD at bay keeper. The action moved to O’Connor and danced past when he made a top save on 25 the other end of the field and three UCD defenders before minutes, Mark Dignam played Zack Elbouzedi opened the beating keeper Tom Murphy the ball into the path of Liam scoring with a brilliant goal. El- with a blistering right foot shot Kerrigan and his 20 yard efbouzedi was returning to action that flew into the far corner of fort was on target but the Blues

keeper got across to touch the ball past the far post. The Blues should have gone two up on 33 minutes, captain Rory Feely fired in a cross to the far post and UCD defender Evan Farrell deflected the ball on to the crossbar before JJ Lunney shot

straight at the keeper from the resulting corner kick. A fine four man Waterford move four minutes played in the second half should have resulted in a goal. Cory Galvin fed O’Connor, who in turn sprayed the ball out to the right for Shane Duggan and after his cross picked out the unmarked JJ Lunney at the far post but Lunney wasted the chance as he turned the ball wide of the far post. Michael O’Connor was the next player to go close for the Blues on 52 minutes when he got on the end of a rightwing Rory Feely cross but his powerful header beat Murphy but just drifted wide of the far post. On 68 minutes the Blues were hit with a sucker punch as UCD equalised, Paul Doyle played the ball from the leftwing position and when Rory Feely failed to clear Liam Kerrigan pounced to beat Connor at his near post with a right-footed strike from just inside the box. With four minutes left on the clock and the game heading

for a draw up popped substitute Dean Walsh to fire home the winner. John Kavanagh found pace on the left and send a long pass over the top of the UCD defence, Blues striker Walsh took it first time on the volley with his left foot from the edge of the box and the ball flew into the bottom corner to give the Blues a much needed win. UCD: Tom Murphy, Liam Scales, Harry McEvoy, Evan Farrell, Mark Dignam, Richie O’Farrell, Jack Keaney, Paul Doyle (Danu Kinsella Bishop `90), Jason McClelland, Liam Kerrigan (Jack Ryan `83), Sam Byrne (Yoyo Mahdy `80) WATERFORD FC: Matt Connor, Rory Feely, Maxi Kouogun, Rob Slevin, John Kavanagh, Tom Holland, Shane Duggan (Georgie Poynton `83), JJ Lunney, Zack Elbouzedi, Cory Galvin (Karolis Chvedukas `61), Michael O’Connor (Dean Walsh `74) Referee: Paul Tuite (Dublin).

Hurling championship update The final group games of the Senior Hurling Championship were completed last weekend. Group C table toppers De La Salle faced a strugglung Ballyduff Upper. An early Cormac McCann goal for the Stehen Street outfit built momentum as the Reds struggled. Two more goals from Jack Fagan saw De La Salle lead 3-11 to 0-5 at the break. It was a mountain for Ballyduff and one which throughout the second half they never really looked like scaling. This win confirmed a quarter final spot for unbeaten De La Salle. The second game of this group featured Lismore and Passage. A real filip for the latter after ten minutes from a Thomas Connors goal saw them ahead by four points. However with Maurice Shanahan on target the Cathedral Town outfit led 1-12/1-10 at the break. The second half turned into a goalfest for Lismore. Maurice Shanahan claimed his second goal and when Paidi Prendergast added another a few minutes later Lismore were ahead 3-16/1-11. Further goals followed from Prendergast and Dan Shanahan to see Lismore claim the points on a 5-26/115 scoreline. The winning margin saw them through to the quarter finals. In Group A Ballygunner faced Tallow. A Dessie Hutchinson goal for the Gunners in the opening minute

Players from Asia Cranes and South Africa pose for photographs after their Ladies Football Native Born tournament game during the Renault GAA World Games 2019 Day 1 at WIT Arena. Piaras Ó Mídheach was answered a short time later by one for Tallow from Tommy Ryan 1-6/1-5. Indeed Ryan kept the Bridesiders in touch but Hutchinson added a second goal to give Ballygunner a little light at the break 2-9/1-8. Ballygunner just about held sway in a fiery second half which saw a number of players receive there marching orders. They came through with five to spare 2-19/1-17. The second game of this group saw Dungarvan beat Clonea 2-31/1-8. Ryan Don-

nelly and Patrick Curran led the Old Boro charge with a goal from the latter giving them a 1-15 to 0-4 halftime lead. Sean Clancy had a Clonea goal but Donnelly also added one for the Old Boro. Group B leaders Abbeyside had to wait until the final minutes to claim a draw against Roanmore 2-10/0-16. Level 0-7 apiece at the break it looked likely that the city outfit would collect the points but Abbeyside through a penalty from goalkeeper Stephen Enright tied the game and

claimed their quarter final place. The second game of the group saw Mount Sion beat Fourmilewater on a 2-19/2-11 scoreline. The Ballymacarbry made a bright start with goals from Shane Walsh and Tom Barron but goals from John Kennedy and an Evan McGrath penalty had Sion in touch 2-8/2-7 at the break. The Monastery outfit pulled clear in the second half to win. Waterford’s Sadie Mai Rowe just fails to block this clearance by Kerry’s Niamh Leen. Photo: Noel Browne
