Prince is charmed by Déise welcome PRINCE Charles has described his visit to Waterford as “most moving”, after meeting refugees who had fled the war in Ukraine and are now living in Waterford. Speaking at a reception hosted by Waterford City’s mayor, Cllr Joe Kelly, the prince began his speech in Irish, and went on to describe the Russian invasion as brutal aggression and praised the Irish government’s response to the crisis. “Such times as we are living through bring into sharp relief the importance of peace and friendship, which history tells us we can too easily take for granted,” the prince said. Under blue skies and warm sunshine, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall arrived in Waterford City to a real Déise welcome. The royal couple were greeted upon arrival at Reginald’s Tower by Cllr Joe Kelly; Mary Butler, Minster for Older People and Mental Health; Michael Walsh, Chief Executive of Waterford City and County Council ;and Director of Waterford Treasures, Eamonn McEneaney. his wife Camilla began their walk through Bailey’s New Street at the base of Reginald’s Tower, Waterford’s landmark monument and Ireland’s oldest civic building. A performance by Waterford’s Viking Re-enactment group was set against the backdrop of the Viking Longboat, proudly emblazoned with ‘Verdrafjordr’ (Waterford’s Viking derived place name). “From a Viking town, to a city with a royal charter, to the place where the first Irish tricolour was flown, to the home of a new university and acclaimed as the best place to live in Ireland, Waterford is a city of promise and hope for the future,” Prince Charles said. During the walkabout, Charles and Camilla met business owners and staff outside the shops lining their route. Knitwear designer Christine Murphy, whose brightly coloured outfit was admired by Prince Charles, said the couple were “very welcome” in Waterford. Continued on next page

Charlotte’s hurley stand is a handy prizewinner Pictured with Charlotte Balfe (centre), Waterford Student Enterprise County Winner, from Ard Scoil na Mara, in Tramore, is teacher Maria Malone (left) and Jacqui Gaule, Local Enterprise Office Waterford.

AN enterprising young Tramore student was announced as the winner at the Local Enterprise Office’s Student Enterprise Programme Virtual Awards, with her innovative design for hurley stands. Charlotte Balfe, from Ard Scoil na Mara, is the founder of Handy Hurleys, a convenient and cost-effective way to store hurleys in the home or club. “The idea was to make hurley stands that would be

convenient and easy to use whilst not being bulky and in the way,” said Charlotte. “I came up with the idea because I have played camogie my whole life and so have the rest of my family, therefore there are so many hurleys in my house. “I tried to find a hurley stand that could hold all our hurleys without being bulky. I just couldn’t find one, so I decided to make my own. That’s how Handy Hurleys was born,” she added.

The students all took part in the Waterford Final earlier in March, which was held virtually and streamed live on the Local Enterprise Office’s Facebook page. An estimated 900 students from 11 schools in Waterford took part in the annual programme this academic year. Charlotte will now be competing against other student entrepreneurs in the Student Enterprise Programme National Final, on May 18th.

Continued from front page The 45-year-old, whose Waterford-based business specialises in sustainable clothing, said: “He said to me ‘I love the colours, is this your work? Are you a designer?’ “I thought he was very personable and giving of his time. I think it’s amazing for Waterford, which is Ireland’s oldest city, to have a royal come here and acknowledge that, given the history between Britain and Ireland. Continuing their walkabout, the couple enjoyed a lively performance from awardwinning street art company, Spraoi and the musical talents of the Mount Sion Choir. “To be welcomed so warmly, not least by a Viking reenactment, is a wonderful blessing and one that will certainly live long in our memory,” Prince Charles added. “It is in places such as Waterford, Ireland’s Oldest City, where we are reminded so vividly of our ancient connections and how they have evolved over time toward a modern friendship.” See pages 10-11

New app makes parking e-asier Waterford wardens Kieran Kenneally and Sharon Curran. Waterford City and County Council is implementing a new eParking app to address the demand for a more convenient, safe and environmentally friendly parking option throughout the city and county. The new eParking App can be used for parking in any Council-run car parks and onstreet parking spaces. Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Joe Kelly welcomed the news, saying: “This new way of paying for parking will be most welcome to a large majority of Waterford people, given that a lot of us have switched to cashless methods when paying for our goods and services.” He added, “This is a convenient way to park, and will also facilitate visitors to Waterford City and County, who may not have cash on hand to pay for parking. I would urge the public to download the App in advance, in order to make the whole process easier for the

next time you come to park.” To park your car, simply scan the QR code or download and open the App on your phone and select the ‘Park’ option. From the map or carpark list, select the location of where you wish to park, how long you want to park for, and pay from the pre-purchased credit or from your ‘wallet’ as a one off payment. You can also add different vehicles to your mobile eParking App if you have more than one car. The eParking system cuts down on the use of paper use and potential litter from disused pay and display tickets, so it is also better for the environment. Users can download the free ‘Waterford eParking’ App from the App Store, Google Play or simply scan the QR Codes which have been placed at parking machines. You can also pay at www.waterfordeparking. ie or by phone at 061-311422. There are no additional charges for using this service.

Drinking in Waterford falls by 10%

The closure of the hospitality sector resulted in a significant decline in alcohol consumption in Waterford over the past two years, but people have progressively been drinking less since 2001, according to Drinks Ireland. New provisional data from Revenue shows that alcohol consumption fell by 4.7% between 2020 and 2021. There was an even more dramatic fall of 9.6% between 2019 and 2021, showing the true impact of Covid related restrictions and closures on hospitality venues. High five! Greenway celebrates its birthday Transition year students from St Declan’s Community College, in Kilmacthomas, celebrating Waterford Greenway’s 5th Birthday. IT’S hard to believe the muchloved Waterford Greenway has been open just five years, as many locals feel they have been living with the award-winning trail for a lifetime. The Waterford Greenway stretches from Ireland’s Oldest City, through the picturesque village of Kilmacthomas and on to Dungarvan. Anyone who has made the journey will praise the sense of freedom, the fresh-air,

magnificent scenery and chance encounters as just some of its highlights. The Greenway was officially opened on March 25th 2017 by Simon Coveney on the 50th anniversary of the last passenger train journey between Dungarvan and Waterford City. Since opening, the Greenway has attracted over 250,000 visits annually, resulting in the development of many tourism and hospitality businesses.

It has also won a number of awards, including: the first Irish Greenway to receive the Green Flag Award for Parks and Green Spaces in 2020 and retain it in 2021; silver in the Excellence Category at the 10th European Greenways Award in 2021; Best Visitor Attraction in the Irish Independent 2022 Reader Travel Awards. Commenting on its success, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Joe Kelly said

“Happy fifth birthday to a muchloved amenity here in Waterford and the South East. Waterford Greenway is a visitor attraction that has grown and developed due to the dedication, vision and commitment of Waterford City and County Council, the local communities, businesses and stakeholders. The enjoyment this visionary project brings to so many, of all ages and abilities, is just amazing.” visitwaterfordgreenway.com

Survivor appeals for cancer support

A Waterford man, who says he owes his life to cancer research, has urged the public to support the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil campaign. Liam Cuddihy (52), was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2018 after his children noticed a lump under his chin. After successful initial treatment, the discovery of a further lump under his arm during a check-up in September 2020 meant he had to start the process all over again. Commenting on the experience, Liam said: “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for cancer research. It’s like a switch that starts hope flowing, and makes change happen. “Survivorship has gone from three in 10 to nearly six in 10, it’s doubled because of research and because of what’s coming on stream.” You can still donate to Daffodil Day by going to: www.Cancer. ie/DaffodilDay

Fishing tackle An Irish visit to is flying success Belgium Traditional Irish salmon flies from Waterford, commissioned one 120 years ago for the Cork International Exhibition in 1902, now feature in a new historical picture book from Inland Fisheries Ireland. ‘Fly tying’ involves the ‘dressing’ of a fishing hook to create an artificial fly, which is then used by anglers. In 1902, a collection of traditional fly dressings was commissioned, with specific sets of flies collected for each

of the 20 fishery districts throughout the country, including Waterford. The salmon flies featured from the Waterford district include the ‘Grey Cochlin’, the ‘Sooty Olive’ and the ‘Dark Claret’ and they were tied for fishing on the River Barrow and the River Suir. Shane O’Reilly, Angling Advisor at Inland Fisheries Ireland (inset), said the book “offers a unique glimpse into Ireland’s past, putting a spotlight on traditional salmon angling in Waterford.”

Visit Waterford grows

WITH summer on the cards, Waterford’s tourism and hospitality industry is getting ready to welcome visitors both new and old across the city and county. New members have now joined the team of existing stakeholders across Waterford’s tourism industry, collectively playing a part in the promotion of Waterford as a premium tourism destination in the

South East. Visit Waterford’s latest members include Christ Church Cathedral, Camino Tours, The Booley House in Lismore and The Majestic Hotel, in Tramore. David McCoy, Chairman of Visit Waterford, said the new members will help build upon the “long-term strategic development of tourism” in Waterford. WATERFORD’S Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler, visited Belgium as part of the official St Patrick’s Day engagements. Ms Butler said: “I was a pleasure to begin my St Patrick’s Day visit to Belgium on familiar ground, as I travelled to the Irish Embassy in Brussels for a reception with the Ambassador of Ireland to Belgium, Kevin Conmy. “I travelled to Geel, a city located in the Belgian province of Antwerp, for a breakfast meeting with Mayor of Geel, Ms Vera Celis and City of Geel General Manager, François Mylle. I was interested to learn that Geel has links to Ireland as far back as the 7th century, through St Dymphna and is twinned with the village of Tydavnet, in northern Co Monaghan. “I also welcomed a Waterford themed visit to Sanofi Pharmaceuticals where I was presented a general introduction of the Geel site and relationship with Waterford operations by Julien Moindrot, Site Head before enjoying a tour.”

Bah mumbug! Time to ditch this Mother’s Day nonsense

W

hat is a modern I r i s h mammy? Or mam. mum. ma, m o m , m o m m y, mother? Whatever you’re having yourself. She has as many roles as she has names. She might be a business woman who also looks after a family. Or a carer who also holds down a job in a factory. She might have children but no husband or her husband might be another woman. She might be a footballer, a jockey, a boxer, or a scrumhalf with ambitions to play for Ireland. She might be a snappy dresser who reads Vogue or a plumber who loves DIY magazines. She might be both. To her friends and her family, the modern Irish mammy can be many things. But to the makers of greetings cards she is a crea-

Michael Wolsey

ture stuck in a time warp. Her clothes wouldn’t cause much of a stir in the 1950s. She doesn’t wear short skirts, or jeans or a tracksuit, She does wear lipstick. Her hair stops just above her shoulders and seems to be done in some sort of perm. I got all those names for mothers from an ad that Aldi was broadcasting in the run-up to Mother’s Day, which caused me to look at their cards in my local shop. Mammy wasn’t actually pictured on many of them. They mostly featured drawings and inspirational messages. From these I gather that mam is a sentimental old dear, whose favourite colour is pink. She likes robins, roses and daffodils and is fond of bad poetry. To sing your praises mom I don’t know where to start, Be you far, or be you near You are always in my heart

Of course, Aldi is not really in

the business of greetings cards. I thought maybe shops with a wider selection, or online suppliers, would provide a better reflection of a modern mother. But they are not much different. More cards just means more of the same. There was little mumsie in her blouse and kneelength skirt, cooing over some rubbish rhyme while doves fluttered overhead and her offspring gazed fondly at this maternal wonder. Mammy doesn’t seem to have much of a sense of humour, either. Jokes feature on lots of birthday cards, Valentine cards, even Christmas cards. They are rare on Mother’s Day cards. I spotted one that said mum shouldn’t have to lift a finger on Mother’s Day “and if you ask her to, she’ll lift two”. And I liked one that declared:

“It’s not easy being a mum. If it were, dad would do it.” But in the main, Mother’s Day cards don’t go for humour. There’s no room for jokes after they’ve squeezed in the hearts and flowers and terrible tributes to the world’s greatest mom. Mothers are not the only victims of greetings card stereotyping. Grandmothers, who seem also to qualify for a card on Mother’s Day, are subjected to even more sentimental slush and, if depicted at all, look like a cross between Mrs Brown and Queen Elizabeth. I found more stereotyping last year when I tried to buy a birthday card for my young granddaughter. Boys’ cards were coloured red, yellow, green and orange - all bright and garish. On the girls’ cards you could have (to misquote Henry Ford)

any colour you like, so long as it was pink -and a pretty insipid pink at that. Cards for boys were illustrated with footballers, rugby players, astronauts and Bart Simpson up to all manner of mischief. Cards for young girls had hearts, flowers, cup cakes and warbling birds. The only cartoon character in any of them was a simpering Disney princess. In the unlikely event that my granddaughter were to try to buy a card for me, she would come up against the same sort of problem. Grandads, in the world of greeting cards, are dozy-looking old guys, wearing slippers, sitting in armchairs and smiling in a fashion which, I guess, is meant to be benign, but comes across as a bit sinister. So if it’s any consolation, mommie dearest, you are not alone. In the greeting card world we never grow old; we are all old to begin with.

What Can I Do To Help Pollinators?

book of the week

with Justin Ivory

Pollinators are insects that transfer pollen between plants, leading to fertilization. Bees are the pollinators that we are most familiar with. We have 99 bee species in Ireland, 21 bumblebees, 77 solitary bees and one honeybee. One third of these bees are threatened with extinction due habitat loss, decline in wildflowers, pesticides, disease and climate change. Bees and other pollinators are vital as 78% of wild plants are pollinated by insects and 71 of the 100 hundred crops that provide 90% of the world’s food are pollinated by bees. The folks at the All Ireland Pollinator Plan (AIPP) in the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC) have given the following 10 tips of how we can all help: • Don’t mow, let it grow • Reduced mowing allows native wildflowers to return over time. Just be sure to remove all grass cuttings. • Protect and create native hedgerows • Native hedgerow species flower in spring providing an essential early season source of food. • Plant pollinator-friendly trees • Native trees and shrubs support huge numbers of pollinators. • Avoid Pesticides • Herbicides, insecticides and fungicides kill pollinators directly and their food sources. • Create nesting habitat • Rough, tussocky areas, south facing bare banks and holes drilled in wood. • Pollinator-friendly planting • Choose nectar and pollen rich plants that will provide food throughout the year. Think twice about getting honeybee hives as they are not in danger, and they compete with our wild bees for limited food sources. • Be careful with wildflower mixes as they often contain non-native species. • Don’t install a large bee hotel as they encourage the spread of disease and attract predators. • Spread the word and get involved - talk to others about what actions they are taking for pollinators and join a community group or local Tidy Towns.

Putin’s Road to War RTE1, 10.15pm, Thursday March 31st

ambulance Cinemas nationwide

IRELAND’S Secret War is a thrilling account of the true extent of Irish-Allied co-operation during World War II. It reveals strategic Nazi intentions for Ireland and the real role of leading government figures of the time, placing Dan Bryan and G2 - the military intelligence branch of the Irish Defence Forces - firmly at the centre of the country’s battle against Nazi Germany. With the help of over 35 hours of previously unpublished audio recordings that were held in storage in northern California for over fifty years, the author reveals the extraordinary unheard history of WWII in Ireland.

IT’S the question everyone is asking as the horrors of war unfold yet again in Eastern Europe. And in this gripping piece of reportage, Michael Kirk and his team reveal the inside story of what led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, examining the events that shaped Vladimir Putin and the grievances that drive him. The one certainty for Vladimir Putin is that defeat in Ukraine would mean the end for his leadership. With a military campaign which has gone far worse than anyone imagined, Putin is running out of options.

THIS one-pot Moroccan chicken recipe is a simplified tagine using chicken breast and store cupboard basics for a satisfying meal for four. It’s also great for batch cooking. Do it on a Thursday or Friday when you’re winding down towards the end of the week because couscous is, at the best of times, a bit fiddly and leaves a total mess on the floor. Also, give yourself up to two hours for prep and cook and crack open a nice red to keep things moving along nicely as you go.

When teasing and promoting the record since May 2021, it is reported that the artist took on an evil, demonic or soulless persona, so as to play into a deal-with-the-devil idea. Visuals for the album include “femme fatale powers” and a multitude of “dark spells and curses” as well as signature nods to both cars and car crashes. Mam, Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day Unseen, unheard but always near, Still loved, still missed but very dear. 16th Anniversary Tom White

In loving memory of Tom White, 59 Doyle Street, 110 Morrissons Road, who died 24th March 2006. Mass offered in the Cathedral on Sunday 27th March at 12 o’clock. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, He closed his arms around you And whispered “come with me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you fade away, Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay, A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove, He only takes the best. - Always remembered by your children Kathleen, May, Tom, Declan, Richard and Paul, sons in law, daughters on law, grandchildren and great grandchildren

In loving memory of Michael Grant late of St John’s Park, whose 9th anniversary occurs on 26th March. A loving husband, dad and grandad too, Each one of us thought the world of you, For us you always did your best; God grant your soul eternal rest. We did not know that morning, What sorrow the day would bring, When a heart of gold stopped beating, And we couldn’t do a thing. We never fail to think of you, We never cease to care, We only wish we could go home, And find you waiting there. - Loved and never forgotten by your loving wife Kitty, sons Derek and Mickey, daughters Michelle and Karen, sons in law Eddie and David, daughters in law Suzanne and Tanya, sister Theresa and her husband John, brother Eddie and all your grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Willow Design will create a largescale willow and recycled metal pollinator sculpture in the theatre’s reimagined, public-facing ‘All the World’s a Climate Stage’ biodiversity garden, which will be designed by Eoin Dullea, Horticulturist with Waterford City & County Council. This art-in-the-public-realm will be inspired by theatrical performance and nature and will, through collaboration

with Biodiversity Ireland, itself be populated with pollinators, acting as a natural urban habitat for insects/butterflies/birds to thrive into the future, in line with the AllIreland Pollinator Plan. The sculpture and garden will be the first step in Theatre Royal’s transformational ‘green journey’ and will be in alignment with Waterford Council’s 2040 ambitions to become Ireland’s first decarbonised city.
