Women find their Field of Dreams THE football women of Waterford have found their Field of dDeams. Waterford Ladies Gaelic Football Association (WLGFA) have become the first women’s county football team to fully own their own ground. The 11-acre site beside the Greenway - at Ballinroad, near Dungarvan - has been bought after years of fundraising. Work will start in summer on a state-of-the-art pitch, changing rooms and spectator stand. There will be a coach and car park and a six lane running track around the perimeter. The fit-out will be funded by the sale of nearby development lands, with profit split between the WLGFA (70%) and the local Kilgobinet GAA club . John Frewen, Chairperson WLGFA said they were grateful to the owner of the site, known locally as the Duckspool site, who had made them the main beneficiary of its sale when it secures planning permission. Waterford LGFA and will mean that county players will no longer have to travel to different GAA fields around the county and not knowing where their next training session will be. “It is the intention of the Waterford Ladies Gaelic Football Association to provide a multifunctional playing and facilities development in what is a strategic location in the county,” said Edel Curry, secretary of Waterford LGFA field development subcommittee. “Ladies Gaelic Football is the fastest growing sport in Ireland today and our facility will be the first of its kind.The youngsters who will benefit from this development will be our stars of the future and hopefully bring continued All Ireland glory.” Michelle Ryan, a former Waterford LGFA senior county team player said she was delighted with the plans . “This will be a very valuable asset to Waterford LGFA, as it will create a much-needed base that we can call our own.”she said.
