Q

aWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills, or expertise to support?

I am a mentor for an organization called, Women Who Lead. I love this role. I get to mentor women of all ages. I get a view of some of the other barriers that may cause a woman professional to not be successful in the workplace. Homelife cannot be totally separated from our professional life. Sometimes these roles spill over into the other area.

Q

aQ

a

How do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

I really enjoy what I do. It is my calling. When times get hard, I allow myself 50 seconds for a pity party. After that, it is time to get back to work.

As a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

I mostly want my clients and mentees to lead by example the art of helping other women professionals. This posture should be natural, not forced. I strongly believe that not all interactions must accompany an invoice. Some behaviors and actions should be implemented because we have a strong sense of purpose that that action must be done.

Q

aWhat advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

Continue, despite the setbacks and the naysayers. You must continue the work even if its alone. Sometimes the work seems to be a thankless job. However, in the long run it will be recognized. Someone will thank you because they met you and YOU were their only savior to provide the knowledge they needed to get to the next level.

As host of the Parenting 411® radio show on Baltimore’s Radio One talk radio station, she was named Radio Personality of the Year at SpeakerCon 2019. She is a 7x best-selling author whose most recent book was recognized as a finalist at the 2022 International Book Awards. Her signature talk, “Scaling Up: From Marketing Manager to Mother of the Year” has inspired many. Carol is the proud mom of twin sons who are now thriving, young adults and the inspiration for her venture into parent education. In her previous career, Carol was a corporate marketing manager responsible for a product portfolio that generated $1 billion in annual revenue.

aQWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

When my twin sons were two years old, I came to the realization that motherhood is ministry. That revelation sparked my journey of being a change agent who enriches the lives of children by touching the hearts and minds of their parents. As a new mom of twins, I became fascinated with child development when one son was diagnosed with developmental delays. My journey took on a new urgency and unleashed a fierce desire to understand his needs and find resources to meet them.

Undeterred by the diagnoses, I was determined to help him not only address his challenges, but also leverage his strengths which I trusted were there. Through training and my own research, I acquired a wealth of knowledge about how children learn and the support they need from parents. It then became my calling to provide parents with tools to build healthy connections and communication with their children so then can equip they to reach their full potential.

Q

aWhat does exemplifying excellence mean to you and your business/ career?

Excellence in my business starts with keenly observing and listening to the people I feel called to serve – working moms with children aged 3 – 13 years. Only then can I really tap into their needs and honestly assess whether I have solutions for them. Because I am striving for excellence, I am honest with my clients and/or partners about my ability to deliver. If I audaciously attempt to be the solution for everyone, I probably won’t serve anyone well. Clarity about what I do and whom I do it for allows me to deliver on what I promise. That is excellence.

aQaQWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills, or expertise to support?

I am incredibly proud of the parenting anthology series I launched in 2021 entitled, The Parenting Odyssey: Trials, Treasures, and Triumphs of Parenting in a Pandemic. Amidst the global shock of the coronavirus pandemic, parents emerged as unsung heroes, safeguarding their families and stepping into roles as teachers and principals, at home, during the shift to virtual learning for school children. Parents took on these new responsibilities while fulfilling their normal duties as employees, business owners, and caregivers, and more. As medical experts, journalists, and politicians looked to history for context and guidance in this hour, I felt compelled to capture these extraordinary times for future generations. This anthology not only applauds the bravery, persistence, and ingenuity of parents but also serves to guide and inspire others to meet challenging moments in the future. It was a tremendous experience to collaborate with fifteen parents, mostly first-time authors, who contributed their inspiring and enlightening accounts. Their stories resonated widely, propelling the book to become an Amazon bestseller in various categories and earning acclaim at the 2022 International Book Awards in the Non-Fiction Anthology category.

How do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

I stay motivated amidst setbacks by deeply engaging with my Christian faith, nurturing strong connections with others, and pursuing continuous learning. Regularly studying the Bible and practicing meditation provides me with comfort and enlightenment and fortifies my sense of divine purpose. Support and wise counsel from family and friends are invaluable to me and boost my confidence when I face challenges. As a lifelong learner, I am receptive to new perspectives gained through experiences, formal education, personal study, and mentorship. Together, these practices not only keep me grounded but also continuously remind me of the deeper reasons behind my efforts and drive me to persist towards my goals.

aQAs a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

As a change agent dedicated to empowering parents, my vision is to fundamentally enrich the lives of future generations by fostering parenting practices rooted in purpose, compassion, understanding, and support today. I believe that by touching the minds and hearts of today's parents, we can cultivate a lineage of children who are confident, capable, courageous, and compassionate. These traits are essential for creating a fulfilling life. Parenting profoundly shapes a child's world, influencing their future decisions and the way they will one day parent their own children. They may choose to replicate what they’ve experienced or make a radical departure from it. It is always my hope that the children of parents I touch will look back on their childhoods with fondness and appreciation for being loved and supported to realize their full potential. When they in turn become parents, they can blend the best of what they've inherited with new knowledge and aspirations to ensure that a legacy of purposeful, nurturing parenting continues.

aQWhat advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

Find something that excites you, profoundly interests you, or maybe even disturbs you. Do your research. Examine what leading thinkers have to say about it. Measure the validity of their positions against your assessment of current conditions. Envision what’s possible in the evolution of that area. Consider how you could make it exponentially better. Decide how you can move the needle in such a way that more people can be positively affected, evolve in their thinking, and ultimately feel empowered and more fulfilled in their lives. Start learning. Start planning. Start executing.

How do you use your voice to effect positive change

I am a personal coach that specialize in helping my clients live their best life. Through purpose-driven conversation and guided exercises, I help my clients identify, define, and align their life to their core values to build a strong foundation and act as a moral compass when facing life’s challenges. This might involve helping them discover and use their voice to advocate for themselves, set boundaries, and inspire action in their communities. I equip them with a clear vision and act as a catalyst for positive transformation in life

aQaQHow are you intentional about exemplifying excellence in your work?

I believe excellence in coaching starts with embodying the values I strive to cultivate in my clients. I continuously learn and refine my coaching skills; I stay current on best practices and seek out ongoing professional development. I also prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy work-life balance, to ensure I bring my best, most energized self to every session. My commitment to excellence extends beyond myself – I create a safe and supportive coaching environment, I foster open communication and celebrate my clients' victories, big and small. This dedication allows me to be a true partner in their journey towards a life lived authentically according to their core-values.

How do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

Even a personal coach isn't immune to discouragement, setbacks, and challenges. Afterall, we are human. When my goals hit a snag, here's what I do to get fired up:

• I practice self-compassion. I acknowledge the setback, but don't dwell on it. I treat myself with kindness and remind myself of my past successes. This helps to fosters resilience and allows me to approach challenges with a clear head.

• I revisit my core values. I reconnect with the principles that drive me. I ask myself, does my goal still align with my purpose? If not, I adjust the goal or approach to completing the goal. Living in alignment with my values keeps me motivated!

• I celebrate my small victories. Did I learn a valuable lesson? Did I develop a new skill? If yes, I recognize these as milestones! I celebrate the

growth I’ve achieved while on the journey, not just the destination.

• I seek inspiration. I read stories of successful people who I admire and who have successfully dealt with their challenges. I surround myself with positive and supportive people. I try to reinvigorate my motivation by connecting with others who share my passion for growth.

By prioritizing my self-care, aligning with my values, and seeking inspiration, I can transform my setbacks into stepping stones on my own personal journey.

aQWhat advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

If you are interested in becoming a positive voice of change as a values-based coach I advise you to:

• Identify your niche and message: What specific values do you want to champion? Aligning your coaching with a clear message will allow you to attract clients who share your vision for a better world.

• Lead by example: People are inspired by authenticity. Live your values in all aspects of your life, both personally and professionally. This showcases the power of values-based living and motivates clients to do the same.

• Embrace storytelling: Share your own stories of overcoming challenges and living according to your values. This creates a powerful connection with clients and demonstrates the positive impact coaching can have.

• Develop a strong online presence: Use social media platforms and a well-crafted website to share your message and engage with potential clients. Focus on providing valuable content that inspires and educates, not just self-promotion.

• Collaborate with others who share your vision: Partner with organizations or individuals who champion similar values. Co-host workshops, create online courses, or write articles together. This amplifies your voice and creates a broader positive impact.

By becoming a beacon of positivity, living your values authentically, and collaborating with like-minded individuals, you can use your coaching practice to create a ripple effect of positive change in the world. Remember, even small changes, multiplied by many, can have a significant impact.

aQaQWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

Being a change agent has always been ingrained in my DNA. From my early days volunteering in my hometown to actively participating in community organizations during my college years, and dedicating two years as an AmeriCorps VISTA member immediately after graduating. My journey continued as I transitioned a personal relationship with my fitness coach into a professional partnership, co-creating a global fitness brand that promotes health and well-being across the globe.

Today, I channel my passion for change into transforming others' lives through business strategy and vision coaching. I empower individuals to redefine their visions and achieve their highest potentials, fostering a world where everyone can thrive by embracing their unique paths

What does exemplifying excellence mean to you and your business/career?

It means having a meaningful influence on others’ lives, helping them to unlock their potential and achieve their own version of greatness. It's about creating a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond my own achievements. This is the legacy I am committed to building through my work—whether it’s on stage speaking, in coaching sessions, or through my initiatives at Purpose Chasing Academy LLC™. My goal is always to empower, inspire, and lead by example, showing that with purpose and passion, everyone can achieve extraordinary things.

aQWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills or expertise to support?

One of the initiatives that I hold especially close to my heart is the co-creation and development of Xtreme Hip Hop. This project started modestly as a fitness class and, through visionary leadership and relentless passion, it has rapidly grown into a global brand that touches millions of lives by rekindling their passion for fitness. One of my proudest contributions to this brand has been the creation of the Xtreme Hip Hop Instructor Program in 2018 designed to provide fitness entrepreneurs with a robust business model, enabling them to generate sustainable income while spreading health and wellness, today we have certified over 4,000 individuals. Additionally, I am the creator of the annual Xtreme Hip Hop Conference, StepChella, hosted in both the United States and Europe. This conference serves as a crucial hub for instructors to learn, network, and connect, further strengthening our community. From an initial gathering of 94 enthusiasts in 2019, the conference has grown to host over 500 attendees in 2023, a testament to its success and relevance.

aQHow do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

My approach is grounded in what I like to call a 'winner’s mindset.' This philosophy is based on the belief that as long as you are actively working towards your divine assignment and aiming to uplift others, every experience is a win—even the setbacks.

Setbacks, in my view, are not roadblocks but rather opportunities to learn and grow. They provide invaluable lessons that, if understood and applied, can open new pathways that were not visible before. This perspective allows me to view every challenge as a chance to refine my strategies and enhance my approach. I often say, “Slow roll is better than no roll,” which means progress, no matter how gradual, is still progress. I review what didn’t work, revise my plans to better align with my ultimate goals, reset my focus to avoid similar pitfalls, and persistently move forward.

aQaQAs a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

My ambition is to leave a lasting impact on future generations, particularly inspiring women with the powerful message that you can indeed have it all — not DO it all, but have it all by achieving what truly matters to you. My journey is focused on empowering individuals to clearly identify their deepest desires, craft a precise vision, and develop a strategic plan to realize those goals. Through my work, I aim to demonstrate that with clarity, vision, and persistence, anyone can "have it all"achieving their personal and professional goals while contributing positively to the world. My ultimate goal is to empower future generations to live purposefully and passionately, ensuring they not only reach for their dreams but also uplift others along their journey.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

My advice is: (i) Embrace YOUR unique vision, don’t chase what others perceive as success; chase what makes you feel purposeful and fulfilled, (ii) Communicate effectively, (iii) Act with integrity and be authentic because your credibility is your currency, (iv) Move with Compassion, connect with others on a human level. Show empathy, listen to others’ experiences, and respect different perspectives, and (v) Connect with like-minded folks; change rarely happens

aQaQHow do you stay motivated and optimistic, especially in the face of setbacks or slow progress towards your ultimate goals to create change?

One who is born to teach and serve must embrace the cost as well as the joy of being their most empowered self. I believe that there’s no use in having the power that God gave each of us if we don't know how to possess it. When it comes to purpose, I recognize that on my watch, that there’s a responsibility on my breath to fulfill my assignment and so it calls me out of any doubt, fears, or the despair that accompanies setbacks. I refute any form of “purpose paralysis” or the entertaining of negative thoughts surrounding progress by faith and I celebrate both micro-wins and macro wins because the goal is bigger than me. What I know for sure is this: God’s plan for my life and what I accomplish can only be hindered by what I allow to have control over my faith. So I live every day “faith-forward” because I recognize that the plan is already written in Jeremiah 29:11 and it will not fail. That is all the motivation I need.

What is your vision for the future in your work as a change agent?

I came of age basically with an edict that said, “if the best is possible then good is not enough.” I know for a fact that you have to prepare for what you’re longing for, otherwise your contribution to the “someday” that you dream of will never be realized, so my train of thought is always running on that track. My vision for the future is to see us close the gap between where we are and where we deserve to be across all industries. In order for that to happen we must boldly show up ready and teach others how to honor us and our contributions. In my areas of impact –publishing, branding, and entertainment –I’m pushing us to the fore and behind the scenes working on projects that authentically showcase our truths, and I’m connecting people who aren’t afraid to wield their genius to do that which hasn’t been done before. This is how I’m actively having my say on the future and impacting how generations will succeed.

women who have a desire to be a voice for

Know your intention and clarify your “why,” because your “why” is your driver - make it count. Don’t be intimidated by allowing your voice, your excellence, your vision, nor your abilities to be diminished. Moreover, don’t allow the opinions of others to compromise your distinction, or to convince you to fit in with ill-conceived notions of progress, success, and prosperity. You were created for such a time as this and being a voice for change is not only essential to you but critical for all of us. In executing your divine narrative, stay focused on being an effective communicator—from messaging, to outreach, to owning the conversation in your territory of your purpose, and in the public forum that is today’s “Attention Economy.” Finally, know that you can’t settle for taking the road well-traveled. You don’t have the luxury of just going to work, nor accepting what others deem your due. On your watch you must blaze trails, create tables of change, power-up in prayer, and show the world that you understand why you are here and what it means to take your power to the next level. No matter where you are in the journey, now’s the time to begin to look at your life in possibilities because you are penning your story, and whatever you want that story to be is shaped by the actions you take now. Here’s my take-5 for the journey:

Understand your purpose

Create personal accountability

Curate your “Celebration Circle” (those who form your essential support system)

Take measurable action

Stay faith-focused on the outcomes

aQWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

My dedication to empowering entrepreneurs began at Howard University, where my master’s in social work ignited a passion for positive social impact. Inspired by the commencement speaker's call to action, I took a literal approach by creating the WEE Global Conference (formerly the Women's Entrepreneur Expo). Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2023, this platform has become a cornerstone for my mission. Through the WEE Global Networking event, I leverage my voice, along with the voices of established entrepreneurs, to equip both budding and seasoned business owners with the tools they need. The event series focuses on the critical skills of business formation and sustainability, empowering attendees to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship.

My influence extends beyond events. As an international radio and TV personality, I have hosted various programs:

• The Joan Henry Show (May We Help You Radio Network and Blog Talk Radio)

• "Influential Thursday" (streamed on YouTube and Facebook, reaching a global audience, particularly in the Caribbean)

• "Inside The VIP Room with Dr. Joan Henry-Fields" (Roku TV) These diverse platforms provide a powerful platform to share my message, connect with a global audience, and ultimately, effect positive change in the world.

aQaQWhat does exemplifying excellence mean to you and your business/career?

In my business, exemplifying excellence isn't a destination, it's a journey. I had to first define what "excellence" means for Airbnb cleaning, and then translate that vision into a training program for my team. It's more than a quick wipe-down; it's about creating an impeccably clean and inviting space that wows the guests. We achieve this through meticulous attention to detail, ensuring sparkling bathrooms, disinfected surfaces, fresh linens, and gleaming floors. But excellence isn't a one-time thing. It's about consistently delivering this high standard for every single guest. By prioritizing consistent quality, we build a reputation for exceptional Airbnb experiences, leading to rave reviews and a thriving business fueled by guest satisfaction.

What is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills, or expertise to support?

My passion extends beyond the WEE Global Conference. I'm equally proud of the RISE International Entrepreneurship and Leadership program, designed to empower budding entrepreneurs. This program focuses on cultivating a success-oriented mindset through the growth model. It delves deep into the power of mindset shifts, aiming to radically transform the way participants approach business. By overcoming fear, procrastination, and self-doubt, they gain the tools to overcome roadblocks and propel their ventures forward. As a researcher, I leveraged my expertise to develop the program using evidence-based practices, rigorous beta testing, and peer review. Its international reach has seen participation from aspiring entrepreneurs across the US, London, Canada, and Jamaica.

How do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals? Q

aThe journey to big goals is rarely smooth sailing, but setbacks don't have to derail me. I find a powerful mix of perspective, action, and resilience keeps me motivated. First, I see setbacks as lessons, like Dr. Willie Jollie's book "A Setback Is A Setup For A Comeback" reminds me. Success offers valuable insights into what needs tweaking and a chance to refine my approach. I've learned to be flexible; a great idea might just need better timing. Action is key, so I analyze the setback, brainstorm solutions, and focus on the next small step forward. Celebrating wins, big or small, fuels my momentum and keeps my eye on the prize. In June 2022, I started with just 7 Airbnb cleaning contracts. By celebrating each new contract and staying focused, I grew that number to 46 by today, with

aQa goal of 90 by year's end. Challenges are inevitable, but I view them as steppingstones, not roadblocks. They fuel my determination to succeed. As long as we keep putting in the work, we'll overcome hurdles. It might not always be sunshine, but remember, it takes both rain and sunshine to build a rainbow.

As a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

As a change agent, my mission is to empower future generations with the knowledge and tools to build a brighter future. I believe universal access to information is key to fostering informed and independent thinkers. This passion fuels my efforts to speak with students on various topics, both locally and during visits to my home country, Jamaica. For example, I recently addressed the issue of special needs awareness. Having witnessed a lack of inclusion in Jamaica during my youth, I was personally impacted by the limitations placed on this population. My own experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities opened my eyes to a different world. Now, with over three decades of experience, I leverage this knowledge to bridge the gap and foster empathy. This dedication extends beyond special needs. Through my programs and training, whether focused on leadership or entrepreneurship, I aim to equip future generations with fresh perspectives. Ultimately, my goal is to empower them to be lifelong learners who can shape a more informed, empathetic, and collaborative world.

aQWhat advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

My advice would be: The world needs your voice to create positive change! Find the cause that ignites your passion – that fire in your belly. Start small with your actions but dream big for the impact. Every positive step, and every person you inspire, contributes to a larger wave. Fuel your efforts with knowledge, research the issue, and learn from successful changemakers. Find your voice, whether it's through writing, speaking, organizing events, or social media activism. Remember, collaboration is key. In the words of my late grandmother, she said “One hand cannot clap”!!! Connect with like-minded individuals together your impact amplifies. Most importantly, persevere. Setbacks are inevitable but learn, adapt, and keep moving forward. Change takes time, but with passion and dedication, your voice can create a ripple effect of positive impact.

aQaQWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

I have been in mental health for over 27 years. During which time, I specialized in trauma informed, trauma trained and somatic modalities. It was when after countless losses and tragic diagnosis in my own life that I needed a therapist. I searched for over 6 months for a ‘good’ therapist and came up empty. Me! Having all the tools, network and understanding, could not find a viable therapist in my desperate time of need. Meanwhile, I still had to serve my clients, run my private practice, continue being a wife; to a grieving husband, mother; to 2 active and involved children, daughter; to a devastated mother with dementia diagnosis and so on.

After a year and 5 therapists, I finally found a beautiful soul that was able to create room for me. She always allowed me to feel heard, not judged for my anger or fears or tears. She guided me through exercises of body and mind awareness. Which allowed me to begin my own healing process. From then, I have decided to be the Therapist for Therapists. To create a RESTORATION PLACE for those who serve, lead, give and make room for everyone else. I teach, train, remind and create a space for those who often are overlooked as being the “STRONG ONE” or “Always OK”. In my space, it’s ok not be ok.

What does exemplifying excellence mean to you and your business/career?

Exemplifying excellence for me may seem different. Of course I have all my ‘receipts’ I am trained and certified in more than I even remember. For years I often thought of excellence as how many degrees, certification and accolades one receives or earns. Now, I believe that what makes a human excellent is self awareness, self integrity and true self love. See if you begin with you, there’s a ripple effect on that awareness, integrity and love. When you love yourself and your God, you tend to take care of those around you. You begin to see humanity in all people, caring for those at the market or the park. You tend to be aware of how others may feel and become more compassionate and empathetic. As I journey through my healing process, it makes it easy to assist others to join their own journey of healing- That to me is excellence.

aQWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills or expertise to support?

I’ve started a Somatic Grief support group I run about 3 times a year. This group is close to my heart because Grief and Loss is very familiar to me especially in the past 5 years. These groups are no more than 6 individuals from all walks of life grappling with this “Intrusive” Grief process. Their losses range from death of a loved one, watching a loved one die due to cancer, dementia or the like, divorce, estranged relationship, relocation, loss of employment to name a few. It has come to my attention that This particular Group has allowed members to clear some of their shame, pain and misconception and gave permission for participants to feel ‘hard’ feelings without judgment. I run other support groups “The Burnout Busy Woman” and “Therapist to Therapist”.

aQaQHow do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

Great question; there are no setbacks in my eyes, solely redirection. I am a woman of faith, I believe my God got me and what is mine will ALWAYS be mine. Also my mother used to always say “Que no viene, no comviene” Meaning if it’s not here, it’s not for you. I fight to stay focused on my ‘micro decisions” My God and His promises, prioritizing relationships over entrepreneurship and healing from the inside out.

As a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

Mental Health professionals, leaders, police officers, physicians, doctors, nurses, healers often do not have a space to Restore and Rejuvenate. My BIG GOAL is to create a physical space for said persons to Rest, to Cry, to Reflect, to Rejuvenate, to Restore. So that they can go back into the world filled, healthy and ready to continue their missionHeal Others.

aQWhat advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

Look within, search your heart for your true purpose. Once you’re doing what brings you pure joy, you will change your world. Do not underestimate your passion.

Dr. Emma Norfleet

As a psychotherapist, trauma expert, and motivational speaker, Emma has dedicated her career to helping trauma survivors. Her book “How to Unmask and Resolve Trauma,” released in early February 2022, is a testament to her commitment. Emma and her staff provide evidence-based psychotherapy to help trauma survivors manage their trauma. Her mission is to empower thousands of trauma survivors to 'MAKE THEIR TRIUMPH MUCH GREATER THAN THE TRAGEDY.'

Q

aWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

It was my trauma of surviving an alcoholic father who terrorized the family for years until my mother divorced him that inspired me to become an advocate for survivors of trauma. As I was a little girl, “the late and great Rosa Lee Norfleet” told me, "For Much that Is Given, Much is Required.” I applied that saying and turned my mess into a message.

Q

aWhat does exemplifying excellence mean to you and your business/career?

When I think of exemplifying excellence, words like honor, integrity, and dedication come to mind. And when your divine assignment aligns perfectly with your chosen career as a Mental Health Professional, serving with honor, integrity, and dedication is exactly what survivors of trauma need. As the owner of an outpatient mental health agency, I have applied these words as core values required in my agency to serve families, individuals, couples, and groups that have survived trauma. Incorporating and holding firm on these core values and principles within my agency, I believe, I have contributed to helping many clients in treatment learn how to “Triumph Over Trauma.”

info@hmocs.org @askmsemma askmsemmanow

aQWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills, or expertise to support?

Of the many projects/initiatives I’ve done over my 40 years of working in the mental health field, “The Trauma Mobile Bootcamp” is, by far, the one I’m most proud to be the visionary of. As a licensed mental health professional, I have helped hundreds of people throughout my career. However, stepping into the entrepreneurial world of motivational speaking provided another avenue to increase my reach to other trauma survivors and thus broaden my impact on their lives. Hence, “The Trauma Mobile Bootcamp,” which was launched in March of 2023, had outstanding results with regard to impact and transformation in the lives of the trauma survivors who participated in that boot camp. I, along with “Debra Bell-Campbell, Dr. Brenda Harrell, and Dr. Sharon Hopkins, are honored to serve in this capacity, which is to “Make trauma survivors triumph much greater than their tragedy.”

Q

aHow do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

First and foremost, my faith sustains my motivation in the face of setbacks to thwart my divine assignment or goals. Secondly, faith without works is dead, so no matter what adversity I face, I keep it moving with a mindset of determination and knowing, trusting, and believing in the “Power of 3” (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), and that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens Me.” Thirdly, with my educational achievements and extensive experiences in the mental health field, I’ve cultivated a lane of clinical brilliance. Coupled with overcoming personal traumas, this fuels my passion to impact and transform the lives of trauma survivors no matter what.

Q

aQaAs a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

I intend for my work to impact future generations by raising awareness about treating trauma and disrupting the imposture syndrome that many trauma survivors pass on from generation to generation. This is rooted in the widespread desensitization that exists within our society today. For example, did you know the number one cause of death is trauma for the age group 1 through 46? Another alarming fact is the annual cost of trauma ($671 billion) in health care and lost productivity. So, as a change agent, it is incumbent upon me to continue my divine assignment to help survivors of trauma deal with, cope with, and manage unresolved trauma. Impacting and transforming the lives of trauma survivors, especially parents and parents-to-be, not only increases future generations' awareness about trauma and treatment but will also decrease the annual cost of trauma.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

Being obedient to God’s plan and process is key to accepting one’s divine assignment and being a positive voice of change in the world. Next you must invest in yourself by finding a coach who will guide, mentor, and support your desire to be a positive voice of change. After accepting your assignment and investing in yourself, you must take action by implementing and integrating the shared knowledge from your coach(es) within your lane of brilliance amongst your desired population to serve.

aQWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

Losing my best friend, ministry partner, and big sister in Christ to breast cancer in 2009; and surviving 10-years of depression, sadness, and grief in 2019 inspired me to start my journey as a Change Agent. I knew, if I could overcome “addiction to grief” I could support others who were also suffering in silence.

I use my voice to effect positive change in the world through my Healing Academy, my 40 Kingdom Principles in 40 Days that supports people on their healing journey, and my Podcast that offers a space for people to share their healing journey. I also host the “No More Suffering in Silence Support Group” to support people who suffer in silence.

Coach Shar was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Sacramento, California until the age of four. In 2009, she relocated to Maryland. She was a single mother of three and has been an empty nester since 2017. Coach Shar is currently experiencing "new life." She was delivered from 10-years of depression, grief, and sadness (2009-2019) after losing her best friend to breast cancer in 2009.

In 2019, she attended Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant’s Inner-Healing & Life Coach School in Maryland. She studied soul-healing and coaching for two years. She “did her work,” reinvented her life, and created an Academy in 2021 that allows hurting women to heal. Through "Begin Again Academy," Coach Shar offers her clients a safe-place to give their pain a voice, be heard, peel back layers of pain, face it and heal it. Her motto is: If you can feel it, she can help you heal it.

aQWhat does exemplifying excellence mean to you and your business/career?

I view excellence as a culture. I signed up for it. Exemplifying excellence means consistently demonstrating exceptional qualities and practices in helping individuals navigate through the grieving process. My goal every day is to be a demonstration of excellence, empathetic support, effective communication, continuous learning, and ethical professionalism to assist clients with loss and transforming their journey towards healing and growth. Excellence is a core value I live by in my business…it’s essential.

aQWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills or expertise to support?

I am especially proud of launching my “No More Suffering in Silence Support Group.” I’m providing what was provided to me, and I love it. Through transparent conversations, it’s a safe-place to do “soul-work for every soul-cry.” It allows me to work with people on their healing journey at no cost and build a community of women who are experiencing similar struggles. It’s a place for women to give their pain a voice, complete healing activities, and create goals that support them in becoming the greatest version of themselves in alignment with God’s divine purpose for their lives.

aQHow do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

In the face of setbacks, I want to know, “why did the enemy fight me so hard?” I want to know, “what didn’t he want me to have?” If Christ overcame the grave and already conquered the world, so can I. I’m motivated to “get back” everything the enemy thought he stole from me and have the dominion that is my birthright. I am the head not the tail. Everything God has for me is coming to me; I utilize positive self-talk.

aQaQAs a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

The impact I desire to leave on future generations is being able to equip individuals globally with tools, coping skills, a morning Kingdom routine, and the support needed to navigate grief and loss in a healthy and empowering way. I desire to lead future generations to Christ through their grief and trauma. I help them to get in alignment with their divine purpose.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

I advise people to educate themselves on their niche and become the change they desire to see in the world. I encourage people to “listen and learn” from the people who are affected by the issues they care about.” It’s important to hear people’s soul-cry and be able to speak to people in a way that is empathetic, loving, and empowering.

I stay motivated during setbacks by recognizing my spirituality and my higher source. I have decided that every day gives an opportunity to gain experience. I rest on the words found in Psalms 139 that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

I would advise someone who desires to be a voice of positive change to invest in themselves and get the coaching or teaching that you need. I would introduce them to Global Speakers University facilitated by Dr. Cheryl Wood as a great place to start.

aQWhat inspired you to start your journey of being a change agent, and how do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

I was inspired to become a change agent by my upbringing and personal experiences. Growing up in challenging circumstances, living in the projects from parents who lived from paycheck to paycheck and never owned anything. I witnessed the transformative power of education, hard work, and faith in overcoming adversity. I use my voice to effect positive change by advocating for financial literacy, empowerment, and community development. Through mentoring, teaching, and philanthropy, I strive to uplift and empower individuals to take control of their destinies and create a better future for themselves and their communities.

Q

aHow do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

I use my voice to effect positive change thru: (i) Public Speaking to share my ideas, experiences, and insights with others and raise awareness about important issues, inspire others to take action, and advocate for positive change; (ii) Writing articles, blog posts, books, and other written content to educate, inform, and inspire others to join me in making a difference; (iii) Education and Mentorship to share my expertise, lessons learned, and best practices with aspiring entrepreneurs, designers, and leaders, to help them navigate their own paths to success; and (iv) Networking and Collaboration to amplify my efforts and effect change on a larger scale.

How are you intentional about exemplifying excellence in your work?

I intentionally exemplify excellence by paying close attention to detail which is crucial for creating memorable experiences including luxury retreats and special events for my clients. I ensure that every aspect of the event from venue selection, décor, to guest accommodations, is meticulously planned and executed to perfection. I also exemplify excellence in innovative design, client satisfaction, and prioritizing ethical practices and integrity in all aspects of my work.

aQHow do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

I stay motivated by focusing on the why, reminding myself why my goals are important to me; breaking big goals down and focusing on taking small, incremental steps forward rather than getting overwhelmed by the enormity of any setback or challenge; celebrating progress, no matter how small, and recognizing my achievements along the way to boost my confidence and motivate me to keep going; and learning from the setbacks – instead of viewing setbacks as failures, I see them as opportunities for growth and learning, I reflect on what went wrong, identify lessons learned, and use that knowledge to adjust my approach and move forward more effectively.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

My advice is: (1.) Identify Your Passion and Purpose – finding a cause or purpose that aligns with your values and ignites your passion will give you the motivation and drive to effect meaningful change; (2.) Educate Yourself – advocate for continuous learning and self-education on the issues you care about; (3.) Use Your Voice – speak up and use your voice to advocate for positive change, share your perspectives, stories, and ideas to raise awareness and inspire action; (4.) Stay Resilient and Persistent –acknowledge that effecting positive change often involves facing obstacles, setbacks, and resistance; stay resilient, persistent, and adaptable in the face of challenges, and remind yourself that meaningful change takes time and sustained effort, and (5.) Practice Self-Care and Well-Being – remind yourself to prioritize your own well-being and self-care as you work toward your goals of creating positive change. Cultivate balance in your life, set boundaries, and engage in activities that nourish your physical, mental, and emotional health.

aStevetta Dickerson is a storyteller, with 15 years of nursing experience and another 14 years in missions. Her education is a movement through life experiences and enjoyable classroom labor - both being full of opportunities. Some of her passions include coaching and mentoring the next generation, prayer, photography, and music. Something she can often be found saying is, “contending for the purposes and promises of another person’s story is painful, powerful and joyful!” She is also a confident plant mommy of a variety of pothos.

Q

aHow do you use your voice to effect positive change in the world?

I speak life into a situation or circumstance. I don’t often wait for permission to do so. This has risks with it, but it also has great potential to affect positive change. It takes some skill in emotional intelligence to enter into a conversation you haven’t been invited into. In these momentary conversations I have seen the greatest impact. There are opportunities to affect positive change all around me that often only take a moment of my time, if my eyes are open. Such as a grocery store clerk looking sad, there is an opportunity to ask them how they’re doing, and dependent upon their response, I can affect positive change by giving a simple, positive encouragement about the job they’re doing. Often, their countenance changes, and I believe something deep within them is truly affected.

How are you intentional about exemplifying excellence in your work?

Excellence is not stagnant, it is a consistent flow based on growth, education, experience and humility. So, I choose to grow in excellence. I take the time in the midst of my daily life to educate myself through observation, watching YouTube for more than entertainment, take courses, and then apply what I gain.

How do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals? Q

a

Honestly, I am a woman of prayer. I have to ask for help from Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is such a great shepherd. He leads me when I have failed and can’t see how to make it better or find a way to undo what has happened. Then, I choose to silence my fears and anxieties. Then I take action towards walking through the setbacks. For me, failure is a place of growth or it’s a place of death. It’s about the choice I will make when setbacks come.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

Take the flying leap. Eagles don’t fly in the nest. Eagles step to the edge of their nest, which is on very, very, very high cliff . The wind is blowing, a storm may even be raging all around them. Then they open their wings, catch either the updraft or the down draft. They fly, because they took action. Next time take the moment as it comes your way. It will happen, guaranteed. Use your voice and change the world - even, if it's one person at a time and that one person is yourself.

DTM

Dr. Jonas Gadson,

aQaQWhat is one project/initiative you’ve launched or participated in that you’re particularly proud to have contributed your talents, skills or expertise to support?

At Eastman Kodak company I rose from working on the manufacturing line to a corporate training position because I had developed and mastered my public speaking and effective communication skills. I was working on myself outside of work and I was promoted. When they heard that I raised $1.1 million dollars from 1,100 employees in my division at work during very difficult times, they wanted to find out more about Jonas Gadson. I had taken the Dale Carnegie Communication course and spent many years becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster with Toastmasters International. When they heard of my speaking gift, in the community and at work, the vice president of the division created a position for me as the coordinator and trainer for my division of 1,100 employees. I trained 8,000 employees from 69 countries who were division executives, vice presidents of business units, sales leaders, engineers, scientists, nurses, human resource representatives, executive secretaries, and manufacturing line workers. And I earned the Trainer of the Year Award.

aQAs a change agent, what impact do you want your work to have on future generations?

I am an agent of transformation and I want future generations to know that transformation is permanent! With transformation, you move to a different state of being and you cannot and don’t want to change back. No matter how many legs a caterpillar has and how fast it can run; it can never fly…that caterpillar must die and transform in order for the butterfly to fly. I wrote my 1st book, “How To Fly Like An Eagle With Wings Like A Wimp.” It teaches you to Take a Chance! Take Charge! And Take Control of Your Life!” I believe that each person has the capacity to evolve into a new version of themselves.

What advice would you offer to individuals who have a desire to be a positive voice of change in the world?

I would recommend three things: (1) Work on yourself – personal and professional development is critical. Hire a coach to help you work on you; (2) Know your subject – you must master One Thing. People aren’t looking for generalists, they’re looking for specialists to help them solve a problem. So, what is your calling? Your One Thing must bring value to the masses; and (3) Know your audience – your audience wants to know “What is In It For Me? What do you have that is legal, moral and ethical that will help me to live my calling/purpose?”

Q

aHow do you stay motivated in the face of setbacks towards your big goals?

What keeps me motivated is that I choose to be optimistic. I understand that tough times will happen in life, but my purpose pulls me thru. Even with my own health challenges that I deal with while growing my business, I don’t allow myself to get stuck in discouragement. I stay motivated by reading books, listening to tapes, attending virtual and in-person masterclasses, conferences, seminars, and training classes. I don’t allow my valley to be my finale! I change my language from what happened “to me” to what happened “for me.”
