By Dr. Cheryl Wood
Now, more than ever, it is essential to step out of the background. Those who have the capability but hesitate out of self-doubt or fear are withholding the potential for progress. Leadership is not about perfection but about commitment, and stepping forward when others retreat is the hallmark of true leaders. The time to lead is now.
In today's complex and fast-paced world, the need for effective leadership has never been more critical. Leadership is no longer about titles or positional authority; it’s about taking responsibility, inspiring others, and driving positive change in uncertain times. Yet, many capable individuals shy away from stepping into leadership roles, preferring to remain in the background. This hesitation often stems from the fear of failure, discomfort with visibility, or the overwhelming weight of responsibility. However, staying in the shadows not only stifles personal growth but also deprives organizations and communities of much-needed direction and vision.
The world needs leaders who are willing to embrace uncertainty and navigate complexity. As global challenges become more prevalent, the call for decisive leadership intensifies. Leaders are not only problem-solvers but also visionaries who can chart a course forward, despite ambiguity. They have the capacity to galvanize teams, inspire innovation, and foster collaboration – traits that are indispensable for progress.
Moreover, leadership provides a unique platform for personal development. It challenges individuals to refine their decision-making abilities, emotional intelligence, and communication skills. Through leadership, one learns how to manage not just processes, but people, emotions, and aspirations. These experiences foster resilience, empathy, and the ability to think strategically – qualities that are critical not only in professional environments but also in life.
Here are five practical action steps to help you step fully into leadership roles and opportunities:
Cultivate Self-Awareness: Reflect on your strengths, limitations, and values to understand your leadership style and areas for growth. Awareness is the foundation for leading authentically and effectively.
Seek Out Leadership Opportunities: Take initiative by volunteering for leadership roles, whether in your workplace, community, or professional networks. Don’t wait for someone to ask – proactively step into roles that challenge you.
Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and coaches who can offer guidance, feedback, and encouragement. Leadership thrives in environments where collaboration and support are prioritized.
Develop Decision-Making Skills: Practice making decisions with confidence, even in uncertain situations. Focus on gathering information, considering multiple perspectives, and trusting your judgment to act swiftly and decisively.
Communicate with Purpose: Hone your public speaking and communication skills to inspire and motivate others. Effective leaders articulate a clear vision, build trust, and empower those around them through thoughtful, impactful communication.

TAVIS SMILEY is host and managing editor of the nationally syndicated radio program “Tavis Smiley” which is produced and distributed by SmileyAudioMedia, Inc., (SAM) where he serves as founder and chief visionary officer.
On Juneteenth 2024, SAM celebrated the 3rd anniversary of its flagship heritage community radio station, KBLA Talk 1580 in Los Angeles.
In 2023, Smiley received the highest honor in the talk radio industry, the coveted “Freedom of Speech” award and is presently listed on the “Heavy Hundred” list of the “100 Most Important Radio Talk Show Hosts” in the nation.
He founded the Tavis Smiley Foundation in 1999 which has trained thousands of young people aged 13-18 in youth leadership development. Many of the Foundation’s “Youth to Leaders” program participants are presently positioned as servant-leaders in various fields of human endeavor in both the public and private sector.
Additionally, in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers, The California Endowment, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Marguerite Casey Foundation, the Wyncote Foundation and others, the Tavis Smiley Foundation spearheaded “ENDING POVERTY: America’s Silent Spaces,” a $3 million four-year initiative to examine barriers and identify solutions to alleviate poverty in the United States. Smiley was also the force behind the 18-city “The Poverty Tour” in 2011 to highlight the plight of poor people of all races, colors and creeds so they will not be forgotten, ignored or rendered invisible. A companion book to the tour, “The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto” became an instant New York Times bestseller and a documentary series produced from the tour aired on PBS.
His classic book “The Covenant with Black America” was a national plan of action to address the primary concerns of the African American community. The book climbed to #1 on the New York Times Bestseller’s List and sold millions of copies. Most notably, Smiley saw this text as an extension of his social justice and philanthropic work, donating all proceeds from the book. In the summer of 2024, a new edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Covenant will be released.
Smiley has crisscrossed the country donating his time and expertise speaking at countless schools, colleges and universities, churches and community-based
organizations over the many years of his broadcast career. Additionally, for a full decade, he funded a scholarship in his name at his alma mater, Indiana University, to assist poor and deserving students in their matriculation.
His award-winning documentary, “Too Important to Fail: Saving America’s Boys” and the companion volume were part of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s “American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen” initiative.
The list of campaigns and causes to which Smiley has personally donated and volunteered to help raise funds, range from breast cancer research in memory of his longtime producer Sheryl Flowers who died of triple-negative breast cancer at age 42, to the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Boys & Girls Club in East St. Louis, Illinois, to the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky, on whose Advisory Board he sat for years.
Smiley has always viewed his philanthropy and humanitarian interests as an essential component of his work and witness. As such, Smiley is presently in the midst of a $2.5 million yearlong Climate Justice Campaign aimed at raising the civic IQ and empowering communities of color and the poor, the disproportionate victims of modern-day climate catastrophes. He recently curated and moderated a historic national symposium broadcast worldwide on C-SPAN featuring a panel comprised exclusively of people of color addressing climate justice and racial equity.
Smiley is the recipient of nearly 20 honorary doctorate degrees and myriad other awards celebrating his humanitarian efforts, including the President’s Award from the venerable civil rights organization, the NAACP. He has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and recognized by TIME magazine as one of the world's “100 Most Influential People.” In 2024, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. presented Tavis Smiley the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award honoring his lifelong commitment to using his media and philanthropic platforms to help build a stronger nation.
LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, October 3, 2024 / EINPresswire.com / -- On Friday, Sept. 13th, 2024 in Los Angeles, California Tavis Smiley, renowned author, broadcaster, and social activist, was awarded the prestigious Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to humanitarian efforts and community empowerment.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at the Top of the Hub in DTLA where dignitaries and fellow activists gathered to celebrate Smiley’s unwavering commitment to advocating for social justice, education, and economic opportunity for underserved communities. The prestigious award was conferred by Dr. Jennifer Pilate and her husband Dr. Felton Pilate of The Pilate Foundation, in conjunction with AmeriCorps, Points of Light and signed by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
For over three decades, Smiley has dedicated his life to uplifting marginalized voices and fostering dialogue on critical issues facing society. Through his influential national media platforms and initiatives, he has engaged millions in conversations about poverty, racial equity, and the importance of civic engagement.
“Receiving this award is not just an honor for me, but a recognition of the collective efforts of countless individuals and organizations working toward a more equitable society,” Smiley stated. “Together, we can continue to make strides in creating lasting change and addressing the challenges our communities face.”
Smiley’s notable achievements include founding the Tavis Smiley Foundation, which supports educational programs and leadership development for youth, and hosting numerous public forums that encourage civic participation and awareness.
The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and the nation through volunteer service. Smiley’s tireless advocacy exemplifies the spirit of this honor.
Smiley also celebrated his 60th birthday and the release of his new book, “The Covenant With Black America: 20 Years Later”.
Our voices are one of the most powerful tools for change, with the potential to shape hearts, minds, and communities. Around the world, ideas and movements are born from a single person daring to speak up, making public speaking and communication not just skills, but essential acts of service. Every day we remain silent is a day we withhold the power of influence, leaving potential change unrealized. Now, more than ever, the world needs voices that stand for truth, justice, and progress.
Honing communication skills ensures that your message resonates. Whether you're standing on a stage or speaking in intimate conversations, the ability to clearly convey ideas creates ripples of impact. Every day is the best day to start sharing your voice, because each moment is an opportunity to lead, inspire, and uplift.
Here’s how you can unlock your global influence and make your voice matter every day:
1.
Develop a Clear Message: Clarify your core message and ensure it aligns with your values and the change you want to inspire.
Overcome Fear: Acknowledge the fear of public speaking but use it as motivation to grow and push through the discomfort. 2.
By Dr. Cheryl Wood
Become A Great Student: Study, watch and analyze influential speakers to observe and understand what makes their communication effective.
3. Invest in Communication Training: Take public speaking or communication courses to become intentional about enhancing your skills and confidence.
4. Own Your Story: Identify the key moments and values that define you and use them to shape a compelling narrative that reflects your unique voice.
5. Practice Speaking: Start small – join communities where you can practice sharing your message and consistently seek opportunities to speak on global stages.
6. Network with Like-Minded Individuals: Surround yourself with others who are passionate about making a difference and sharing their voices for mutual support and encouragement.
7. Stay Consistent: Regularly share your message to strengthen your voice, build confidence, and ensure your message resonates clearly with global audiences.

It’s never just about you—it’s all about your audience. Your goal as a speaker should always be to deliver real value, offering actionable insights that your audience can immediately apply in their businesses. Whether you have 10 minutes or an hour on stage, your focus should be on providing tangible takeaways. Remember, the more value you give, the more you will receive in return. By prioritizing your audience’s needs, you’ll not only leave a lasting impact but also build deeper connections and open more doors for future opportunities.
What is the core message you want to share with the world through speaking?
Understanding that speaking is a business is crucial for anyone looking to make an impact from the stage. It's not just about delivering a great speech – it’s about mastering all aspects of the process, from working with event hosts to collaborating with producers and coordinators. aWhat is the most important lesson you’ve learned as a speaker?
I've learned that you do not need to wait to tell your story until you are completely healed. In fact, sharing your journey, even while you're still in the process of healing, can be incredibly powerful and transformative - not just for yourself but for those who hear it. Authenticity resonates deeply with audiences, and it’s through vulnerability that we connect and inspire others. I’ve discovered that our stories, in all their imperfect and evolving forms, can be a source of strength and hope, reminding others that they are not alone in their struggles. Embracing the courage to speak your truth, even when it's still unfolding, is what truly makes an impact.
Q
aWhat is the core message you want to share with the world through speaking?
That true transformation and fulfillment come from embracing your authentic self, aligning with your divine purpose, and harnessing the power of resilience. Life’s challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to rise, heal, and grow into the fullest expression of who you are meant to be. By sharing your journey - even in its imperfect, ongoing form - you can inspire others, create meaningful connections, and illuminate the world with your unique light.

The main message I share with the world is, everyone has a divine assignment. That assignment is something the world needs and is aligned with your gift from God. When you use your gift to live in your purpose, you will be successful, fulfilled, prosperous, and have inner peace. When you have inner peace, there is peace all around you and the world. I also speak on the importance of leaders developing their staff to build leaders from within the organization while using the essential soft skills to meet the organization's needs. Empathy, Communication, Compassion, Adaptability, Emotional Intelligence, Time Management, and establishing trust are essential to have a positive climate where employees thrive.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned about how to deliver value as a speaker?
Be authentic in your presentation and know your audience. You must always tailor your speech to meet the needs of the audience. Engagement is important as well as entertaining the audience. aWhat is the most important lesson you’ve learned as a speaker?
My most important lesson was to practice, practice and keep practicing some more. Through this process of trials and errors, I have been able to find my own voice and authenticity and feel good about being on stage delivering my heart-felt messages.
What is the core message you want to share with the world through speaking?
My main message is that everyone has an innate ability to create something unique in the world. In order to create this unique aspect/ business we need to find, embrace and utilize the uniqueness within, which is far away from 3-step formulas or following what other people tell us we need to be doing.
This path is unique to us, it is more difficult than the paved road, but yet is more empowering and fulfilling as it is ours and helps us show this bright light we have inside of us, out into the world.
So, I’m inviting people through my work and message to look inside, to work on finding these aspects that make them stand-out and use them to create an impact in their lives and into the world.

The most important lesson I've learned as a speaker is the transformative power of storytelling in message delivery. Through storytelling, I can draw the audience in, create emotional connections, and convey important lessons in a way that resonates deeply.

The core message I want to share through speaking is the essence of Carpe Diem-Seize the Day. The core message I aim to convey is one of empowerment for women, urging them to cast aside their fears, insecurities, and past hurts to embrace the purposeful lives they were meant to live.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned as a speaker?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is the transformative power of using body language and storytelling together. It’s not just about reciting words; it’s about painting a picture with your entire being—your expressions, gestures, and movement. To truly captivate and move your audience, you have to bring them into your story. You need to show every emotion, illustrate every moment, and create such a vivid image that they aren’t just listening—they’re experiencing it alongside you, seeing the scene unfold in their minds as if they’re living it themselves so that they walk away remembering the lessons learned.

aQaWhat is the most important lesson you’ve learned as a speaker?
I’ve learned that people want to save time, money, and pain or feel better about themselves. So, in order to deliver value as a speaker, it’s important to share shortcuts and strategies to accomplish those things. I’ve also learned that by sharing my personal/professional story I’m able to help other people realize what’s possible. When my story is compelling, my audience will write themselves into my story as they envision their own.
What is the core message you want to share with the world through speaking?
To be placed on any platform to impact others by influencing and embracing change is an honor and a privilege. My core message is that in a world of entitlement, God’s way is the right way. I encourage individuals to remain humble for “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble,” (James 4:6) and to let people know that wherever you find yourself He has a purpose and a plan that is greater and bigger than you.

When you speak, it is not about you, it is about the message you convey. Make sure you have a strong message. A message that really touches your heart carries magic ready to spread to other people's heart.
What is the core message you want to share with the world through speaking?
My core message is that the best way to start changing your life for the better is to get along with yourself. I learned that through very challenging times, but God knew that I would come out of the storms stronger and wiser. And one of the programs I teach in my school is, “Get Along With Yourself” because the relationship with yourself is the most important of them all.

Finding your voice and deciding what to speak about is one of the most profound journeys any communicator can take. In a world brimming with noise, it’s important to ensure that your message is not only heard but also meaningful and impactful. Whether you're delivering speeches, writing blogs, or creating content for social media, what you choose to speak about must resonate deeply with you and the audience you seek to influence. The clarity of your purpose will amplify your message, enabling you to inspire and lead with authenticity.
To determine what you truly want to speak about, it is essential to reflect on your values, passions, and areas of expertise. This process requires both introspection and a deep understanding of the needs of your audience. Here are 10 powerful questions to help guide your decision-making process when it comes to choosing your speaking topics and using your voice to spread a meaningful message to the world:
What am I deeply passionate about?
Passion fuels authenticity. Identify the topics that ignite a sense of excitement or urgency within you, as these will be the foundation for a compelling and genuine message.
What personal experiences have shaped my perspective?
Reflect on significant moments in your life. What lessons have you learned that others could benefit from? Your unique journey is a source of powerful stories.
What problems do I see in the world that I want to help solve?
Consider societal, cultural, or even industry-specific issues that you care about. How can your voice contribute to addressing these challenges? 3.
What are my strengths and areas of expertise?
Use your knowledge and skills to speak confidently about topics where you can offer insight, guidance, and solutions.
Who is my target audience?
Understanding your audience is key. Who are you speaking to, and what do they need to hear? Tailor your message to their interests and concerns.
What impact do I want to have on others?
Define the change you want to inspire. Whether it's motivating action, providing education, or sparking meaningful conversation, be clear on the effect you want to create.
What message do I want to be known for?
Think about your long-term vision. What message do you want people to associate with you, and how does it align with your core values?
How does my message align with current global or societal issues?
Relevance matters. Consider how your voice can contribute to ongoing discussions and larger movements in the world today.
Am I prepared to be vulnerable and authentic in sharing my story?
Impactful speaking involves sharing personal truths. Are you willing to be transparent and authentic in your storytelling?
Clarify the outcomes. What do you hope your audience will do, think, or feel as a result of your message? 10.
What action do I want my audience to take after hearing my message?
Answering these questions can help you align your voice with the messages that matter most to you and your audience. Speaking with purpose and intention allows you to leave a lasting impact, not just through words, but through the change you inspire in others.
