This path can be daunting, yet it’s one of the few ways to experience growth and transformation on a meaningful level.

Let’s explore what it takes to be a bold risk-taker and develop the courage to take big leaps for your aspirations:

1. Shift Your Mindset

Risk-takers view failure not as a setback, but as a stepping stone to success. Adopting this mindset starts with accepting that mistakes are learning opportunities. Instead of seeing failure as the end, use it to refine your approach and grow stronger.

2. Define Your “Why”

Vernice “FlyGirl” Armour has been tested her whole life. A gutsy trailblazer, her resume is an impressive collection of “firsts” including America’s first Black woman combat pilot.

She served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine. She was also a diversity liaison officer to the Pentagon for Headquarters Marine Corps. After her military service, FlyGirl revved up her career in the private sector as an entrepreneur, consultant to business, and author of Zero to Breakthrough, The 7-Step, Battle-Tested Method for Accomplishing Goals that Matter. As a speaker, FlyGirl unleashes hard-hitting advice and amazing anecdotes from her adventures on the battlefield and in business. She helps individuals and organizations Get Gutsy and build a sustainable inner force and conviction, that results in accomplishing significant goals.

In 2007, FlyGirl launched VAI Consulting & Training, LLC. Through that work, she helps individuals and organizations make gutsy moves and create breakthrough results by applying her “Zero to BreakthroughTM” Success Model – a mindset that helped to propel her career and kept her safe in air combat. FlyGirl regularly takes her message to premier meetings and conferences worldwide and is a Gutsy Confidence Mentor for elite senior executive Women in Tech.

As her newest business venture, in 2020 FlyGirl started FlyGirl Construction, a General Contracting Firm in the Atlanta, GA area.

As a Black gay woman and single mom, FlyGirl brings vital experience to her role as a member of the Forbes School of Business & Technology Board of Advisors and COMCAST/NBCUniversal Joint Diversity Council.

FlyGirl has two honorary doctorates and has received numerous awards as a pioneering pilot, including honors for her commanding role in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Vernice “FlyGirl” Armour’s story has been featured in the media including on CNN, MSNBC, The View, FOX News, Oprah Winfrey and many more, along with being a running back for the San Diego Sunfire professional women’s football team and two-time title holder of Camp Pendleton’s Strongest Warrior Competition.

She is currently working on her next book, The Gutsy Move.

What does it mean to “Get Gutsy”?

I like to say it’s not a gutsy thought, it’s a gutsy MOVE. So, what is The Gutsy Move: In your gut you know it’s right, it takes guts to do it…and you gotta take action… If you don’t take actions, it wasn’t a gutsy move, it was just a thought.

Making the decision to transition out of the military and start my company was a Gutsy Move. Investing in my first coaching program when I didn’t have the money was a Gutsy Move.

Who or what inspired you to embrace such a bold approach to living your life and pursuing your goals?

The first REAL influencers in my life were my parents…all of them! My mom and dad divorced when I was three and they both remarried while I was still very young. So, instead of the divorce leaving a scar, I chose to say I was blessed with two sets of parents when some people don’t have any. ALL of my parents believed in me and instilled the belief that I could do and be anything I wanted…even to their dismay with some of the decisions I made, like being in harms way as a police officer or becoming a Marine and going to combat. I like to joke and say I gave them all their gray hair!!!

Looking back, what would you tell your younger self about the importance of inner force and taking risks?

What daily practices or habits have you developed to sustain your inner force and conviction especially during challenging times?

It’s interesting…I haven’t been a super duper routine person…I LOVE and crave variety.

And…the two things that sustain my inner force that I think about EVERYDAY are what do I really want? And my “why.”

What’s something “Gutsy” you’ve done lately that you’re extremely proud of or excited about?

What’s the legacy you intend to leave behind through your work and your message?

I would tell little Vee that taking risks in life is where all the juice is. It’s where all the magic is. It’s where accomplishing your dreams lives. It’s where the empty rooms are because most have gone the easier route. I would tell her…go for it…go for all you’ve ever wanted and will want. In order to be successful you gotta get gutsy.

Man, there are quite a few things that I’m proud of. Reinventing myself during challenging times, being open to innovating in my business and expanding into teaching people who have a message to share how to get paid to speak. So, I’m excited about my most recent adventure. I charted a private jet and am taking 5 people with me. I call it a mastermind in the sky. The keynotes have been tried and true for me. I went from making $2,500 a keynote to $50,000 a keynote, being a woman, black and gay. I truly KNOW that if I could do that…anyone can.

I am standing on so many shoulders and I am their legacy. From my great great great grandmother who was a slave, to my parents to Les Brown and Willey Jolley, my first two mentors in the business. I want my legacy to be a body of work that expands on my book Zero to Breakthrough. For people to truly believe that they can create the breakthroughs that are their callings in life.

That they can truly do anything. That the possibilities are endless. All they have to do is make their Gutsy Move.

The boldest decision I made in 2024 that I’m most proud of is the decision to invest deeper in my personal growth to become the best speaker coach and trainer I can be. I stretched myself and invested more than I ever thought I could in top-level coaching, masterminds, and high-level programs to master my craft and transform lives.

The one critical characteristic for me has been resilience. The ability to bounce back from setbacks and disappointments, to get back up and stay in the game no matter how hard it gets and despite the challenges and obstacles that appear along the way, and to get up quicker has allowed me to accomplish my goals and be at this moment today.

My morning routine includes affirmations, devotions, prayer, acknowledging what I’m grateful for, reconnecting with my vision and my “why,” reading inspirational quotes and listening to my personal power anthem.

I encourage myself and remind myself of who I am and whose I am and that I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. And lastly, I’ve learned that giving myself grace and practicing self-care helps me stay resilient and committed to moving forward.

As we enter 2025, what advice would you give to someone who feels stuck or afraid to make a bold move towards their big goals?

If you’re feeling stuck or afraid, ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen if you make that move and what’s the best thing that could happen. Challenge any negative, disempowering thoughts or beliefs that try to hold you back and replace them with positive empowering ones. Flip the script on your self-talk and just do it! Get into action and bet on you.

The big leap I'm most excited to make in 2025 is increasing our desired goal for the Jordan Alexander Cofield Foundation Scholarship Fund from $10,000 to $15,000 and doing the initial work to secure a building in Jordan’s name to host the annual fundraising gala and other events in alignment with Jordan’s Way.

MORE ABOUT THE JORDAN ALEXANDER COFIELD SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Jordan Cofields' family started The Jordan Cofield Scholarship to keep his memory and his legacy alive. Jordan was equally serious about his scholastic abilities as he was his athleticism. This is an annual scholarship that will be awarded and evenly distributed between six student athletes (male and/or female of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities) enrolled in an HBCU, who also excel scholastically with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Funds will be made to the HBCU the student attends or plans to attend. The Jordan Cofield Scholarships will be awarded at the formal gala annually in August. Jordans' family and board members of the Jordan Alexander Cofield Foundation will review all applications and choose the 6 recipients who most closely resemble what Jordan stood for and exemplified - a spirit of excellence.

While ambition is admirable, it’s vital to prioritize your mental well-being to ensure your grind doesn’t lead to burnout. After all, true success starts with a healthy mind.

Here are practical steps to keep your mental wellness front and center for the new year:

Realistic Goals 1. Set Break your big goals into smaller, manageable milestones and celebrate progress along the way - it keeps you motivated and reduces overwhelm.
