Veteran’s Future Is Brighter After Much Darkness
Dwight was born and raised in New Orleans. Upon graduating high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served for 12 years. After being honorably discharged, he settled in Atlanta and built a life for himself. But as the only male child in his family, he made sure to visit his mother back in New Orleans from time to time.
Then, a few years ago, Dwight’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, and she needed her “blessed son” to be by her side and care for her. This was a difficult decision. Dwight’s work and friends were all in Atlanta, coming back to his childhood home meant leaving them all behind. Even so, Dwight knew how much his mother had sacrificed for her family during his childhood. He had no choice but to come back home.
For six months, Dwight devoted all his time to care for his mother. Whether it was in the hospital, or in the end, at home by her bedside, Dwight was with her. When she passed, Dwight was devastated and fell into a deep depression. To numb the pain, he started using drugs. His drug use prevented him from finding work, and he ended up homeless and in a dark place. He had come to New Orleans to help his mother but what would she think of him now?
With nowhere to turn, Dwight contacted the Veterans Administration, where he met Mrs. Lindsey, whom he calls his “Angel,” who directed him to Volunteers of America’s Veterans Services at the Oscar J. Tolmas Veterans Pavilion. Upon entering the facility on Napoleon Street, he was met by “Chief,” the Director of the Veteran Services program. He instantly felt at home. “I have a lot of respect for ‘Chief.’ He’s strict, but respectful of all the residents. That was exactly what I needed in my life at that time. He saved my life.”
Dwight stopped using drugs and his depression lifted. “Volunteers of America was a positive force in my life. It got me the services I needed to get myself straightened out and I got my confidence back. This program also helped me get a job. Now, I have my own apartment. I’m ready for God’s will and will accept God’s plan.”
Veterans account for 11% of homeless adults in the US.
They need a coordinated effort that provides secure housing, mental health counseling, and empowerment.
Thank You for Helping Change Lives
Last year, Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana touched the lives of nearly 30,000 of our most vulnerable neighbors in the 16 parishes we serve. With the ongoing challenges from the economy and slow recovery from Hurricane Ida and COVID-19, this number takes on even greater meaning.
Your support continues to allow us to make an impact in the lives of people we serve. We are so very thankful for you—whether you are a new supporter or a long-time friend. Within the pages of this annual report, you will see the difference you made throughout southeast Louisiana.
Please take some time to look closely at our facts and figures but remember the true measure of success is the difference we made in the lives of the people we serve. Currently we are one year into a three-year Strategic Plan. The three goals of the Strategic Plan are:
1. Develop a continuum of integrated services that serves the health and social needs of vulnerable individuals.
2. Integrate Culture, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) through all aspects of staffing and service provisions.
3. Build a financially strong and sustainable organization with diverse funding streams and a net margin of at least 5%.
Our success comes in the hope we create, the stability we provide, and the transformation that takes place in the 16 parishes that we serve.
You can see that hope in the lives of children who are mentored in the Mentoring Children of Promise program. Mentors are a positive role model for the very young and serve as a resource to them, as they dream of their future and the many possibilities ahead.
Stability is essential for individuals to experience full, happy lives, and you can see the stability we provide for people who are part of the Veteran Services program. Thanks to you, Veterans like Dwight can sleep safely at night and envision a better future.
Communities are being transformed each day by volunteers like Ed in St. Tammany Parish. These volunteers are providing much more than just labor, they are giving of their time, talents, and knowledge while being a beacon of hope within their community.
Lastly, we will continue to launch new programs to respond to the everchanging world. Inside this publication you will see examples of the people you helped last year by supporting our 20+ programs. Thanks to your support, Volunteers of America will continue to be there for the people who need us today, tomorrow and for the years to come.

RSVP Volunteers Fill a Critical Role in St. Tammany
Seniors in St. Tammany parish have been sharing their time, talents, and compassion for others at various nonprofits via our own Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for over 20 years. Their contributions are immeasurable, and we are so thankful for their service.
This unique program, funded by a grant from AmeriCorps, offers volunteers aged 55 or older the opportunity to use their skills and life experiences to help meet critical needs across St. Tammany Parish. Volunteers work at a variety of stations that including tutoring, helping at hospitals, or taking seniors to doctor’s appointments. Volunteers work at their own pace— some put in countless hours at a daily volunteer job while others work special events as their schedule allows.
For the last 50 years, RSVP has been shaping and supporting communities across America. Started as a grassroots organization to address community needs in Staten Island, NY, this successful model gained much attention. In 1969, it was funded by the Older American's Act and expanded nationally in 1972.
RSVP of St. Tammany started in 2000 and has been making an amazing difference in our community through the service and support by way of over 1,500 volunteers over the past 22 years. Earlier this year, one of the RSVP volunteers were
recognized by the CEO of AmeriCorps for his dedication to the mission. Volunteer Ed Brannan received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for Lifetime Achievement, which is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a volunteer. We are thrilled that Ed was recognized.
In 2022, more than 300 volunteers and 35 volunteer stations have contributed 20,093 hours to the parish— a dollar value of $573, 454.
Because of the support the volunteers give to the community in which they live, the lives of the citizen are enriched and so are we. To learn more about the RSVP program, please visit www.voasela.org/rsvp.

Fresh Food Factor Fills Minds and Dreams with Lunch Program and Co-Packing Services
Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s Fresh Food Factor has been providing fresh, nutritious meals to the school children in our area since its start in 2013. The team prepares and serves over 2.5 million meals and 600,000+ snacks annually.
For many of the students we have the privilege of serving food, these meals may be the only guaranteed meal they will have each day. That is why our work is critical to the youngest members of our community. We have been fortunate to receive funding from several foundations including the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust Fund and the James P. Raymond, Jr. Foundation. Other groups that have seen the value of our program are the Baptist Community Mission, Methodist Health System, No Kid Hungry, UnitedHealthcare, and Atmos Entery. We are so grateful for their generosity.
We continue to look for new and creative ways to fund our mission. One way we are assisting with this effort is by expanding our portfolio of services offerings to include co-packing services for both local and national bands, under the Fresh Food Factor Packing and Creative Concepts name.
The headquarters of Fresh Food Factor is an 8,500 square foot commercial kitchen located in the historic Lykes Steamship District in New Orleans’ Lower Garden District, and currently has 48 full time employees. This new development leverages our facilities and culinary expertise so that the team at Fresh Food Factor can provide entrepreneurs and local brands a viable way to get their products to store shelves.
Contract packaging, also known as co-packing, it is the process of assembling a product or good into its final finished packages. For companies in the food and beverage sector, this can include bagging, canning, bottling, sealing, boxing, and similar services needed to seal and distribute finished goods to their intended customers. One local business that has already utilized Fresh Food Factor’s capabilities is New Orleans brand, Brass Roots, which sells a variety of sacha inchi seed snacks across the country at Whole Foods, Sprouts Farmers Markets, Wegmans, and Rouses supermarkets.
The establishment of these services near the Port of New Orleans fills a tremendous gap in the region’s ecosystem for this sector. In the past, the local food companies were forced to leave the area to access these types of services. Now brands can stay right here in southeast Louisiana to begin to scale their production.
If you are interested in learning more about the services available at Fresh Food Factor, visit www.freshfoodfactor.org.

Leslie and Ahmad Formed a Special Relationship, Thanks to Your Generosity
Thanks to your support, our Mentoring Children of Promise (MCP) program is changing the lives of hundreds of at-risk youth like Ahmad. That change is only possible because of caring mentors like Leslie. When Volunteers of America matches mentors and mentees, we ask mentors to make a year long commitment of at least eight hours per month to spend with their mentees. But, in most cases, these relationships become bonds that last a lifetime.
Without intervention, 70% of children with a parent in prison will one day find themselves behind bars.
When Ahmad joined our program many years ago, he was a bright and curious 8-year-old boy who lived with his mother. When Leslie became his mentor, the two quickly bonded over his schoolwork. Leslie hoped to foster his thirst for knowledge because Ahmad is so intelligent and inquisitive. She spoke to Ahmad’s mother about a scholarship to a local private school. His mom knew how smart he was and quickly agreed. Ahmad earned the scholarship and has excelled at his new school. Not even the trying times of the pandemic could derail his studies.
Leslie, Ahmad and his mother have developed a relationship that can’t be broken, and all three plan to be a part of each other’s lives for a long time. Ahmad says he is so happy Leslie came into his life. That’s the difference a caring mentor can make in the life of a child. Leslie is able to help Ahmad with his educational goals, and she has helped improve his mother’s life as well. Since Leslie has been Ahmad’s mentor, she’s also encouraged Ahmad’s mother to reach her career goals. As a result, after years of working in the fast-food industry, Ahmad’s mother has improved her career and now has an office job that she loves. Your support makes a bright future possible for Ahmad and hundreds of other young people in our MCP program.
“
Leslie, Ahmad, and his mother have developed a relationship that can’t be broken, and all three plan to be a part of each other’s lives for a long time… That’s the difference a caring mentor can make in the life of a child.”
Craftsman Home Improvement Provides Peace of Mind and Independence
After Hurricane Ida caused damage to much of our area last year, many of us struggled to find home repair services and contractors. Did you know that Volunteers of America has been offering quality, cost effective home repair services for over 20 years by way of our social enterprise, Craftsman Home Improvement?
The team can do just about any type of repair work including bath and kitchen renovations, handyperson and carpentry services, and disability or agingin-place remodels. This program is licensed to complete repairs and renovations up to $75,000. Craftsman Home Improvement is an extension of the Repairs on Wheels Program (ROW), which provides necessary home modifications for seniors and individuals with disabilities in the Greater New Orleans area. All revenue generated at Craftsman Home Improvement is used to help fund our other social service programs.
The Craftsman Home Improvement team recently completed a bathroom renovation for Debbie, a person with intellectual and developmental disabilities who is served by our Supported Living Services (SLS) program. As her mobility declined, she had more issues getting in and out of her shower. That is when the team at SLS reached out to Craftsman Home Improvement to see what could be done. As you can see in the photos, the final product is better than could have been imagined!
This is another example that shows Volunteers of America’s programs work together to assist the people we serve. This is all made possible by the generous support you give to our organization.
Should you be in the need for renovations or repairs, please consider contacting Craftsman Home Improvement at (985)612-1067 or visit www.craftsman-home.org for a quote. When choosing Craftsman Home Improvement for your repair service, you are not only getting the best work possible, but you have the knowledge that your purchase is helping the people in your community.
