WHY WE SUPPORT

We support because our shared humanity calls us to uplift those facing adversity, to stand by those in need, and to foster a community of compassion and resilience.

A Journey of Resilience and Friendship with Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana

The remarkable 26-year journey of Clay and Elsa began with Clay facing adversity, being born prematurely with doctors offering little hope that he would reach his 20s. Amid concerns about how he could lead a fulfilling life, someone directed them to Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana (VOA SELA).

In just a few days, a compassionate Direct Support Professional from VOA SELA met with Clay to initiate the path toward independence. With steadfast dedication, they navigated the complexities of opening a bank account, securing food stamps, and finding Clay his first apartment. These initial steps marked the commencement of Clay’s journey towards self-reliance.

As Clay settled into his new found independence, he was paired with Elsa, an exceptional Direct Support Professional. Over 26 years, their enduring bond transcended the conventional caregiver-patient relationship. Elsa played a pivotal role in assisting Clay with essential life skills, from basic everyday tasks like bathing and cooking to seemingly ordinary activities often taken for granted.

Clay devoted an impressive 25 years of employment at Dorignac’s. His work was not just a means of earning a living but also a platform for fostering connections with people. Clay cherished his responsibilities, from bagging groceries to engaging in conversations with every customer at his checkout line.

In a moment of reflection, Clay expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his family and Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana. He candidly admitted that, without them, he might have faced drastically different circumstances, possibly incarceration or homelessness. His journey stands as a powerful testament to the impact VOA SELA has on the lives of those in need.

Clay’s story encapsulates the essence of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana, showcasing their commitment to making a difference one life at a time. Their dedication to nurturing independence and fostering meaningful connections has transformed Clay’s life into an inspiring narrative of determination, love, and friendship. In Clay and Elsa, a compelling story of compassion, perseverance, and the boundless potential within every individual unfolds, regardless of the obstacles they face.

Clay’s parents turned to VOA’s supported living services to help him learn to live independently, with direct support that comes to his home.
