SURVIVING MYSELF!
Leia Smith tells her story of fighting addiction and becoming a supporter of programs that help families stay together during recovery Her experience shows how important it is to have help and multiple chances to get better, proving that families can overcome big challenges together
I am not ashamed to share with you the raw, unfiltered truth of my journey a journey that led me to this very moment, advocating for a program that could have changed the course of my life and my children's lives if it existed then.
I was not always the woman I am today Back then, I was a mother of five beautiful children, filled with dreams and aspirations for the future But drug addiction does not discriminate. It found its way into my life with a ferocity that I could not comprehend. It tore apart my family, it was brutal on my children.
I didn’t know where to turn. Who was out there to help me get through this? Who would understand the desperate need to heal not just myself, but the fractured bonds of my family - my children? I couldn’t lose my children I was so afraid
Recovery is not easy. I failed over and over again and my children lost faith in my ability to be normal again. You see what terrible life mine had become. It had also become my children’s “new” normal. I was filled with regret.
It was then, in my darkest hour that, finally, recovery offered me a lifeline a chance to heal, to grow, and to reclaim what addiction had stolen from me
I’m not sure how, but that time, I made it through, but addiction’s grip is always just a firm handshake away. I will never be cured. I will always be in recovery.
But today, I, Leia Smith, am a survivor. I am a warrior. I am an advocate for the power of support, and second, and sometimes third and fourth and fifth chances Ms Jackie has given me that chance Without her and Volunteers of America’s new substance use disorder program, my “new” life would have no purpose.
Today, I am a certified peer support specialist at our new outpatient clinic on Canal Street and I have the fulfilling opportunity to help others, and their children, through recovery, which is now my devotion in life This opportunity, this life-changing opportunity, was given to me by the Family Focused Recovery Program of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana. I am so happy, and I am so proud

Harry Bradley's Transformation through Supportive Housing
At Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana, we believe in second chances and empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Harry Bradley's story exemplifies this mission. Written by his case manager, Kasey Tassain, this is a story of resilience and the transformative power of supportive housing.
Harry had faced significant challenges, having been evicted twice due to financial difficulties from living on a very tight fixed income Life was a constant uphill battle, and managing his expenses was overwhelming Harry was evicted and on the street Harry came to Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana with no stable place to call home He desperately needed a guiding hand He needed a friend. He needed Kasey.
Harry and Kasey learned how to budget and prioritize his expenses on his fixed income and by paying his bills on time. He took control of his financial obligations slowly and has maintained his housing for the past seven months. Helping consumers like Harry is what we do. It’s a vital part of our mission.
Harry’s story is not just one of overcoming financial hardship but also of the profound impact that we have on individuals seeking a fresh start. We continue to ensure that no one is left behind on their journey to selfsufficiency.
As Harry’s case manager, I provided guidance on budgeting and followed up with him monthly to confirm that he had paid all his financial obligations, including rent and utilities," Kasey explains. "I knew Harry had the potential to turn things around with the right support.

Empowering Hearts and Minds with Mentoring Children of Promise
In October 2023, Carsynn and Laventie Clerk, two young siblings navigating life without their mother, found comfort and guidance in the Mentoring Children of Promise (MCP) program directed by Ms. Sherlyn Hughes. MCP provides mentors for our youth dealing with crisis and who are at risk. This program is a cornerstone of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana's mission. Matched with the compassionate staff, their journey towards healing and growth began.
Carsynn, an 8-year-old with a penchant for all things girly, and her 10-year-old brother Laventie, came from a home marked by loss and perseverance. Their mother's battle with cancer had left a void, and their father, who struggled to parent on his own, sought support for his children through the Mentoring Children of Promise program. Recognizing the importance of a maternal figure in their lives, their father requested a female mentor to provide the nurturing presence they craved
Referred by a former lead case manager of the WE C A N (Care, Advocate, Nurture) program, the siblings were welcomed into the program with open arms by Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana.
For six months, our staff was a constant presence in Carsynn and Laventie's lives, engaging them in activities that foster growth, confidence, and connection and instilling within them a sense of selfworth and purpose.
Quickly, the children eagerly awaited her visits, finding comfort and joy in her presence Their father marveled at the transformation he witnessed, noting staff’s nurturing yet firm approach a reflection of the love and guidance reminiscent of his late wife.
Through the Mentoring Children of Promise program, facilitated by Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana, Carsynn and Laventie are not just mentees; they are beneficiaries of a bond that transcends mentorship. Our staff’s unwavering dedication and compassion have become a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward a brighter future Each success story, like that of the Clerk siblings, is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship to uplift and empower those in need

Decorating Hope: Volunteers Transform our two Facilities for Homeless Veterans
The Accessories Resource Team (ART) and Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana teamed up with one goal: to make homeless veterans at the Pitt Street and Napoleon Avenue facilities feel happier and more at ease.
Sixty volunteers, who were experts in decorating, came together from all over the country, excited to make a difference. They spent months gathering donations and getting help from companies to turn the empty spaces into something special
On May 9th, with the sun shining down, they arrived like angels ready to work With drills buzzing and furniture being moved, they transformed every corner into a cozy and lively space.
Sharon Davis, who started ART, couldn't help but feel proud seeing the change happening. It was more than just fixing up the place; it was a sign of hope and the community's strength
Navy veteran Nolan Davis was one of the people touched by their kindness He felt comforted in the new spaces, a reminder that even in tough times, there are people who care.
Voris Vigee, President & CEO, Volunteers of America
Southeast Louisiana, felt thankful seeing the rooms transformed. She knew it was more than just decorating; it was showing love and support for every person there
Their collaboration brought hope to everyone who saw it. ART’s efforts made this a truly humbling experience.
Through their dedication, these volunteers bring comfort and hope to those in need, showcasing the power of compassion and collaboration in creating a brighter future for our heroes.

A New Chapter: Joyce Preston's Heartfelt Mission to Teach Reading
Joyce Preston, a retired college admissions officer from Abita Springs, has a special activity on her calendar each week. She tutors her friend Ernestine in reading.
Joyce and Ernestine met two years ago. Joyce is a volunteer with our Retired Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP, on the North Shore. Ernestine is a middle-aged Covington woman who gets support from our Case Management program Suffering with mental illness for years, Ernestine has had a difficult life in which many things, including education, fell through the cracks
Yet, with Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s help, Ernestine is doing well When she expressed a desire to learn to read, the RSVP staff asked Joyce, a teacher early in her career, if she would take on tutoring. She said yes, and the two have forged a strong bond.
“I work with Ernestine every week in the RSVP offices, or I go to her home if she can’t find a ride,” Joyce says. “We work on her phonics, work on words and stories. She has made great progress ”
An RSVP volunteer since 2008, Joyce and her husband returned to their native Louisiana from California when they retired. After her husband died, Joyce says she felt lost and needed to get involved in meaningful activities. She learned about RSVP at a volunteer fair and decided it was for her.
Through RSVP, Joyce has helped nursing home residents, collaborated with seniors and served as receptionist in the RSVP offices She has enjoyed each activity But tutoring Ernestine has been especially rewarding She plans to continue to work with Ernestine and encourages others to volunteer with RSVP “It doesn’t take that much time, and it means so much.”
Journey Program From Despair to Hope
The Darkest Hour: Confronting Reality
My life was dominated by substance abuse, resulting in a chaotic existence filled with instability. The severity of my situation became glaringly apparent the day I was arrested with drugs in my car while my children were with me Watching authorities take my children due to my negligence was a profound wake-up call After serving six months in jail for possession, I knew something had to change.
A New Beginning: Entering Recovery
Upon release, I engaged with a specialty court and family preservation program a lifeline I hadn't realized was essential This program offered me a chance to rebuild my life and become the mother I always wanted to be. Determined to make the most of this opportunity, I transitioned into a sober living house and became part of the Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana's Journey Program. This wasn't just a recovery program; it was a supportive community that believed in redemption and second chances.
Steps Toward Reclamation: The Path of Recovery
The Journey Program provided comprehensive support, connecting me with essential resources such as food stamps and mental health services. A Health Navigator and a Peer Support guided me through the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, helping me distance myself from my past and edge closer to my children The program also offered parenting classes, where graduating marked a significant milestone in my journey towards responsible motherhood
Triumph and Transformation: A New Role
With continuous effort and support from the Journey Program, I regained custody of my children and built a stable, sober life. I now work as a Behavioral Health Technician, a role that daily reminds me of my past struggles and my journey to overcome them. This position is not just a job; it's a testament to my self-sufficiency and the transformative impact of compassion and support
My story is a testament to the fact that change is achievable, and hope is always accessible, thanks to organizations like Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana.

Gary's Path to Freedom, Respect, and Dignity
When Gary came to Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s Gayoso Community Home, he was aggressive, loud and consistently hoarding food The ideas of freedom, respect and dignity seemed like a pipe dream as he continued to hoard snacks and gain weight.
It turns out all Gary needed was a little personalized attention and patience. The staff figured out that he came from another group home that was too restrictive, and he felt like that would never change He was hospitalized for verbal and physical aggression toward staff and other residents
It took time, but Gary’s life is changing for the better. He feels important because of the direct support professionals in his life how they care for him and ensure his safety, dignity and health.
Today, Gary has a positive outlook and is giving back He loves volunteering three days a week at University Medical Center. He started out labeling packages of bandages, and now, he is in the kitchen making sandwiches.
"He's got a really bubbly personality," says Adrena Chandler, the Director of our Gayoso Community Home "He's got a good spirit If you are down, he'll try to pick you up That is special He's becoming more responsible with his house responsibilities, and his attitude as a whole is much better He's just a joyous person."
Your support provides Gary with his Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s home and the personal attention that has changed his life forever.
Foundation Spotlight:
J. Edgar Monroe Foundation Brings Joy Through Community Experiences
It’s amazing what little things can mean. Just ask Blair Monroe of the J. Edgar Monroe Foundation.
The foundation gives $25,000 annually to Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s Supported Living Services program These funds are to be used specifically to engage the persons with disabilities served by the program in their local community, by enabling them to attend events and pursue activities they otherwise couldn't afford.
“These folks have enough challenges in life just getting by with their housing and money for their care,” Monroe said. “Many don’t have an opportunity to do anything social. This donation helps Volunteers of America facilitate activities in the independent living program so consumers can enjoy life.”
The foundation’s generous donation makes a world of difference, enriching the lives of our consumers by allowing them to get out and explore their interests
“All of us take for granted the little things we do day in and day out, but these individuals have challenges and don’t have the opportunity or resources to do something outside the basic needs of their lives,” Monroe added. “I’m just glad that we’re able to help them out a little bit. The main goal is to bring them happiness and allow them to spend time with other people.”
We are grateful to the J. Edgar Monroe Foundation for their generous contribution. It’s easy to see the happiness their gift has brought.

Program Story – Craftsman Home Improvement Services
The Ramp That Rebuilt My Life
My name is Leroy Davis, and if there's one thing I've learned in my fifty-something years, it's that life can change in the blink of an eye A decade ago, I was in an automobile accident that claimed my leg and much more. I lost my job, my marriage crumbled, and eventually, I had to leave my suburban New Orleans home. It felt like the world I knew was unraveling.
I found myself moving back to a family home in Boutte, living a life far from what I had planned. The house, filled with memories of easier times, wasn't equipped to manage my new challenges. I relied on a scooter for mobility, but the layout of my home turned every day into an obstacle course Despite these hardships, I was determined to regain some independence and started fixing up the place with the help of a close friend.
That's when a blessing rolled into my life, quite literally, in the form of a ramp Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana's Craftsman Home Improvement Services, operating in St. Charles Parish and beyond, heard about my situation. This incredible team, led by Program Manager Payne Diaz, dedicates their efforts to improving the homes of low-income elderly and disabled homeowners like myself, allowing us to live safely and independently.
The challenge of building a ramp for my home was not trivial. My house’s quirky design and other logistical hurdles could have deterred a less committed team But Mr Justin, the project lead was no stranger to tough situations. He and his team crafted a plan to install the ramp at the back of my house, performing meticulous carpentry work to ensure it was secure and accessible
The day the ramp was completed, a door opened to a world I thought was lost to me. I cried and Mr. Justin did too. This ramp has changed my outlook on life. Each morning as I go down my new ramp, I am reminded of the kindness of strangers and the unexpected ways life can deliver hope.
Through their hard work, Craftsman Home Improvement Services not only transformed my home but also restored my spirit In Jefferson, St Charles, St Tammany, and St John parishes, their efforts continue to lift up individuals facing daily hardship in their own homes. As I've learned firsthand, sometimes it's the simplest changes that can truly rebuild a life
