Annual Report 2020–2021 The Impact of Your Generosity

Dear VMS Community, Despite a tumultuous year, the mission of Vail Mountain School endured thanks to your generosity and commitment to our school. Your efforts allowed us to continue our cherished VMS traditions, often executed in a slightly different way this year. Not only that, we moved forward in so many ways. Having accomplished every single item on our previous strategic plan, we developed a new four year rolling strategic plan to ensure the nancial viability and educational strength of Vail Mountain School. We reimagined school events such as the new family welcome picnic, Back to School Night, and the Admission Open House, and began new traditions such as the Upper School Fun Festival and online Town Hall Muchmeetings.ofthe
There were many accomplishments last year that would not have been possible without all of you. These include, but are not limited to, the following: increased tuition assistance to families who needed extra support during the pandemic through the Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund (ETAF), the hiring of a full-time school nurse, the hiring of a full-time substitute teacher, recon guration of our physical spaces to accommodate physical distancing and small cohort classes, a state of the art air ltration system, and increased supplies to keep our students and teachers healthy. Thank you to everyone who contributed to Vail Mountain School; it is dif cult to imagine a more prudent investment.
We all owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank you. Michael H. Imperi Head of School
2
The Impact of Your Generosity
support you generously provided was directed to our teachers this year. The money raised at the unGala contributed to teacher salaries, bonuses, summer stipends, and new positions. Your thoughtful displays of gratitude were demonstrated in many delicious teacher gifts and treats throughout the year. Your emails, cards, and other written forms of thankfulness made our teachers smile and know they were appreciated. In these ways, you allowed our teachers to feel supported and loved and I know that is what got them through this dif cult year.

Endowment Gifts to the VMS Endowment provide dedicated and permanent funding for our school and allow VMS to both plan for the future and support our current students.
Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund Our commitment to keep our community together and support one another throughout the COVID-19 pandemic continued into the 2020-2021 school year. A total of $213,894 was raised this year to add to the previously donated $61,226. Two generous donors stepped up right away to give $50,000 each in order to inspire others to give to this worthy cause. This money was used to support families who needed a little extra support through the course of this pandemic.
6 Thank You for Your Generosity
VMS Fund
Tuition revenue alone does not cover the full cost of Vail Mountain School’s annual operating budget. The VMS Fund helps to bridge this budget gap and contributes vital funds to academic programs, need-based nancial aid, teacher compensation, and other expenses. We ask all members of our community, including families, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends to make a contribution each year. This year, 87% of VMS families made a gift to the VMS Fund for a total of over $350,000.
Endowment funds, held in trust and invested in perpetuity, will continue to be available to students far into the future. We welcome your questions and look forward to conversations about how we can partner to ful ll the school’s needs and engage your philanthropic interests.
Vail Mountain School’s endowment was approximately $20 million as of June 30, 2021.

In a typical year, the VMS parent association, Parent Partners, provides several opportunities for VMS families to connect socially and partner with the school in support of students. This year, their primary focus was support of teachers. Parent Partners provided words of encouragement, many mornings of breakfast treats, VMS-themed cookies, a cup of gratitude mug, and a special day of oral deliveries, all to show their appreciation to VMS faculty and staff. They managed to proceed with several alpine and nordic ski days as well as a sunset snowshoe event to allow parents to socialize with one another. We are always grateful for the extensive time and effort provided by Parent Partners, with special thanks to Christina Lautenberg and Susanne Johnson.

9 COVID-19: Delivering Our Mission in a Pandemic
The hallways of VMS certainly looked different this year: students and teachers hidden behind masks; lunch served in a socially distant manner in the dining hall, gymnasium, and outside; health screening and temperature checks for every person entering the building; and hand sanitizer everywhere. However, Vail Mountain School was one of the only schools in the state of Colorado to open for on-campus learning. Looking back at this dif cult year, we are proud that we delivered our mission in different and innovative ways. Our new family welcome event took place on a beautiful day in August with families seated on the eld on picnic blankets. Our Back to School Night became a virtual event, like so many others, however the new structure allowed teachers a platform to clearly communicate their initiatives and curriculum for the upcoming school year. While we were unable to host a traditional Homecoming, our Upper School students and teachers planned and executed Fun Fest — a fun- lled afternoon of food trucks, games, and a friendly faculty-student soccer game. Other accommodations included virtual, well almost everything! Our virtual Town Hall meetings enabled the Leadership Team to communicate with parents, Zoom meetings seamlessly replaced teacher conferences, and our virtual Admissions Open House events were recorded, allowing us to share the information throughout the year to prospective families. We learned what we teach our students: how to collaborate, innovate, and think in new and inspired ways.

10
The inaugural unGala, a virtual event, took place on Saturday, November 14. Parents, supporters, and faculty enjoyed a faculty talent show, a tribute to our teachers, and a paddle raise. The funds generated from this event supported teachers through teacher salary increases, bonuses, summer stipends, and new positions. As always, this event couldn’t have been possible without a team of dedicated volunteers, this year led by Carter Sharfstein and Melissa Provencher, co-chairs, and Wendi Hanlon, Heidi Havenstrite, Barrett Phillips, and Caroline Stewart.

Paddle Raise
UnGala
The Gala Paddle Raise provided an unprecedented bene t to teachers in a year when they needed it more than ever. We were thrilled to have a record-breaking paddle raise to support this initiative. Teachers received two bonuses on top of their salary in the winter and spring. Summer stipends were added to pay teachers for their work over the summer. The funds generated from this event enabled us to conduct a thorough salary review and raise teacher salaries in cases where they needed to better align with other independent schools and will continue to support teachers through salary increases and bonuses in the coming years.

Inclusion & Belonging: An Alumni Initiative
Over the summer of 2020, a group of VMS alumni, current students, and faculty came together to create the VMS Equity Initiative. This group’s vision is to make VMS a school that supports students of systematically marginalized identities while elevating their voices, diversi es school spaces, and creates a learning environment that is sensitive to the implicit and explicit biases that exist both in our community and beyond. A VMS alumna who participated in the committee stated, “I got to college and so many people I hadn’t met before were comfortable and excited talking about diversity, indigenous rights, and other topics I didn’t know about and I would like to empower future students to have tools that give them the ability to join in those discussions.” The VMS Equity Initiative committee is interested in a sustainable discourse around race relations at VMS. VMS faculty took the handoff from this committee and moved forward to continue their work during the school year by forming the Diversity and Equity Think Tank.

20-Year Reunion
Members of the class of 2000 gathered via Zoom for a virtual 20-year reunion over the holidays. Classmates joined from Oregon, Colorado, San Francisco, LA, Maine and London to reconnect with friends and former teachers. On the call it was clear that you are never too old to laugh about old high school shenanigans and remember hours of four-square, chess, and favorite memories about teachers, classmates and class trips. Colby Ricci was the class emcee and kept the conversations owing and the laughter alive. We are excited to gather this group again in person in the year to come.

Kristin Tang Spearheads ETAF
12
Kristin Tang, VMS parent, led the e orts to raise money for the Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund (ETAF) to be used toward tuition assistance for families in need during the pandemic. ETAF allowed us to keep our community together and support one another throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. While much of the ETAF fund was donated during the 2019-2020 school year, there were several generous gifts made in July and August 2020 that capped o a successful and impactful tuition assistance fund. 2020-2021 Tuition Credit In July 2021, the VMS Board of Trustees made the decision to credit all VMS families for the amount of the proposed tuition increase for the 2020-2021 school year. This allowed us to keep tuition at 20192020 levels for all families. While this was a dif cult decision, it proved to be an important investment in our school and our community. In turn, our community supported VMS in ways we didn’t anticipate and were very generous. This support included 87% participation in the VMS Fund, a record-breaking Gala Paddle Raise, and generous support for our endowment and tuition assistance fund. Thank you to all VMS parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and students who supported VMS this year.

1313 Athletics The 2020-2021 athletic landscape also changed dramatically. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) recon gured the sports seasons into four shorter seasons, A-D. Here is a recap of the athletic highlights this year: • US Boys Golf: The team was runner up at regionals and placed 5th in the state championship • US Girls Volleyball: Hosted the regional tournament • MS Girls Soccer: Undefeated champions • MS Alpine: Undefeated champions • US Alpine: Boys nished 2nd overall, Girls nished 3rd overall in state championships • US Nordic: Skate: Men 2nd, Women 5th, Classic: Men 7th, Women 8th • US Boys Basketball: The team reached the state tournament for the rst time in VMS history • US Girls Soccer: Finished the season 12-1 and made it to the semi nals of the 3A tournament • US Boys Lacrosse: Finished the season 9-3 and made it to the quarter nals of the 4A tournament • US Girls Tennis: Won the 3A Region 8 Tournament • US Girls Golf: The team nished second at the 3A State Championship – a rst for VMS!

Thank you, Mike Imperi
14
In March, Head of School Mike Imperi announced his decision to retire at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Mike has been at VMS since 2013 and has implemented many changes and upgrades to our school throughout his tenure. Anne-Marie Keane, former VMS Board Chair, stated, “Mike has taken VMS to the next level with his leadership and vision. He has prioritized the students by raising money to support the replacement of our athletic eld, the transformation of our library into a 21st century collaborative work environment, and the repurposing of space into a MakerSpace for students to create and build products of their own imagination. Our teachers have ourished under his leadership and reinvigorated our curriculum with the integration of project-based learning and technology. His stewardship has put the school on a more secure nancial footing while expanding our course offerings, international travel, and athletic teams. Thanks to Mike, VMS graduates are more ready than ever to face the challenges of a world that needs innovative thinkers, empathetic leaders and collaborative problem solvers.”

Upper School Wellness Committee
This year, many different members of the VMS community provided much-needed social-emotional support.
Beignet
This year the Upper School Wellness Committee, led by Hayley Bill, launched a new initiative called Mindful Mondays. Five to ten minutes of Homebase on Monday mornings was dedicated to focusing on students’ well-being. Tools included 5-minute meditation, box breathing, coloring and drawing, breathing practice, the Calm and Headspace apps, or a few moments of silence. Mindful Monday helped the student body de-stress and mentally prepare for the rest of the week.
Our VMS facility dog, Beignet, is always beloved at VMS but never more so than this year. Quite frankly, she was the social-emotional support that our entire community needed to help us endure a pandemic. Beignet is a 3-year-old golden retriever and is the only Canine Companions facility dog in the Vail Valley. Facility dogs are expertly trained dogs partnered with a facilitator working in a health care, visitation or education setting. Beignet has been professionally trained in over 40 commands to assist our staff psychologist Kate Drescher, Psy.D., as she works with students. In addition to working in classrooms, Beignet helps motivate students and offers emotional support on a one-to-one basis. One of the most valued qualities of Beignet is the unconditional love and attention she gives to our community.

Community Service Thinking of others is key to a VMS education. Pandemic or not, VMS continued its tradition of service to the local community. We were fortunate to continue Middle School Community Day, MLK Jr. Day, and efforts for Adopt-aFamily. At Loaves and Fishes, VMS served dinner once a month to people in our area that need a meal, an average of 75-80 meals in “to-go” style. VMS continued to partner with many nonpro t organizations and work to support the senior citizens in our area. An 8th grade team of students designed a Pack It Up Program, a plan for leftover soups to be donated to the Community Market. The Philanthropy and Service Group continued to donate school store pro ts to many nonpro ts in Colorado and around the world.
16
Elizabeth Cole VMS received a generous bequest from former grandparent Elizabeth Cole in October 2020. Elizabeth worked in admissions at Colby College for many years and before her grandsons Shane ’19 and Ryan (K-11 ’21) were even born she was adamant that they “had” to go to Vail Mountain School. Elizabeth was always impressed by the quality of the VMS education and the students’ dedication to the global environment. She was thrilled that VMS instilled a love of the outdoors and the importance of respecting, loving, and protecting our environment through hut trips, orientation trips, and Intraterm trips. She believed that VMS was instrumental in Shane’s acceptance at USC and gave Ryan a solid background in academics and global citizenship.

This year’s Taft Conlin Scholarship recipient is Tatum Wells of Avon. Tatum just completed eighth grade at Homestake Peak School and will enter Upper School at VMS in fall 2021. “Education is not just learning how to solve a math problem in school, but it is what prepares you for the future,” noted Tatum in her application for the scholarship. Among the criteria for the scholarship is a demonstrated desire to serve others. Tatum has been a volunteer with The Cycle Effect, Celebrate the Beat, and the Bilingual Pathways Award group. She also serves food at the Samaritan House and does work on local trails.
Taft Conlin Scholarship
1717
Six years ago, the Ingalls and Conlin families created a scholarship at VMS to carry on the legacy of their late son Taft. The goal was simple: attract the best and brightest by offering a full, merit-based scholarship to a student with the potential to change the world. And in the years since, the recipients of the scholarship are well on their way to doing just that. Kevin Garcia is at Williams College and Lauren Divronas is at Colgate University. Sergio Rodriguez ’21 spent July with SummerQuest mentoring local middle school students and is now attending The University of Denver.

18
Parent Partners volunteers kept VMS teachers going this year by providing support in many different ways. They treated faculty to breakfast, gifted them with a coffee mug and hot chocolate bomb, gave them gift cards to The Bookworm of Edwards for the Book Fair, and surprised them at the end of the year with an annual pass to Colorado state parks. Perhaps the most impactful gift was notes of appreciation from students and parents.
VMS Teachers
Andrew Hustad concluded his speech by stating, “Andrew’s commitment to our school, and students in particular, extends well beyond his classroom space. He frequently posts up in various spots in the hallway, observing interactions, chatting with students of all ages and cracking jokes with fellow teachers…While Andrew’s day to day work in the classroom involves the fourth and fth grade, his contributions to the overall community reach far beyond this particular age group. From running the clock at games to attending theatre events, he engages with students across the K-12 spectrum. Andrew continues to foster relationships with students who loved him when they were in his class and who now bene t from his insightful thoughts on what it means to have strong character and be part of a community.”
Kate Blakslee Celebrates 30 Years at VMS Kate Blakslee, Coordinator of Alumni Relations and Community Engagement, recently celebrated her 30 th year at Vail Mountain School. Kate’s love of the mountains and outdoors drew her to the Vail Valley after she graduated from Penn State and became a ski instructor 34 years ago. Kate began her career at VMS as a 5th grade teacher and over the years, there isn’t much that she hasn’t done. Kate worked in outdoor education, admissions, ran the ski program, and has been involved in community service for many, many years. Kate has led several Intraterm trips and she currently serves as the faculty advisor for the Philanthropy & Service Group.
Parent Partner Teacher Support
Of Andrew Lambert, he said, “When I rst learned who was chosen as the recipient of the Oliver Compton Teacher of the Year award, I couldn’t help but smile and think to myself, of course.”
Another VMS teacher noted, “Andrew meets his students where they are with compassion and commitment to their growth while also treating them as equals who deserve respect and can meet high standards. He ghts against the narrative of coddling students to achieve these high expectations and as a result is respected by students and faculty alike.”
KJ Hardenberg ’21s honored Kate at Commencement saying, “Vail Mountain School is a better place because of her genuine, kind, compassionate, and humorous nature. I can’t wait for the next generation of students to experience her passion for community and better themselves as a result.” Kate also serves in the role of VMS alumni parent: her daughters Annie ’16, Emma ’19, and Molly ’21 are all VMS thirteeners. Her dedication to Vail Mountain School and her commitment to our community is evident in all that she does. Kate’s kind demeanor, generous spirit, and endless compassion continue to be a gift to VMS.
The 2020-2021 school year can readily be de ned as the “Year of the VMS Teacher.” The entire parent community dedicated their time and resources to support our faculty and staff.
Oliver Compton Teacher of the Year Recipient –Andrew Lambert Lower School teacher Andrew Lambert was awarded the Oliver Compton Teacher of the Year Award at the Class of 2021 Commencement ceremony. Andrew Hustad, the 2020 Teacher of the Year, presented the award. He began by expressing his gratitude, “Gratitude for a community that worked together for the sake of our schools’ students every single day, a sense of relief that we are now at a point where we can re ect and nd time to relax, and a burgeoning hope that next year we will hold on to what we have learned and continue to focus on the core ideas of character, community and knowledge with sincerity and tenacity.”
Another colleague stated, “Andrew is a student-centered, compassionate, and enthusiastic educator. This teacher is excited about everything that he teaches. He is always willing to collaborate and have a can-do attitude about any project. Students know that he has their back and truly cares about each of their learning.”

1919 I love working at VMS because of the autonomy afforded to administration and teachers to plan for and implement what works best for children. We are not driven by curriculum, we drive the curriculum and have the ability to be forward thinking and innovative. This is what makes each day, each week, each month, and each year exciting, refreshing, and joyful!”
~ Lower School Teacher
Over my years at VMS, I feel that I have gained an understanding of myself, knowing who I really am. I have come to recognize my strengths and weaknesses as a person, and understanding these while at VMS will set me up for success in my next four years.” ~ Alumnus ’21
Taking AP Biology with Mr. Sappen eld deepened my interest in the molecular and biological processes in the human body. The class solidi ed my decision to further study science in college. Mr. Sapp’s mentorship during class and on my Steadman research helped form the student and future scientist that I am today!” Academics was challenging for me but my teachers helped me grow by offering me support and providing me with the right kind of accommodations that I succeed with.” ~ Alumnus ’21
In third grade Ms. Douthitt really instilled a love for math. She taught me the importance of perseverance and nding the excitement in every class.” ~ Alumnus ’21 I love the tight-knit community and the support I feel from everyone at VMS. I love the exibility of classes and being able to teach my passions.”

Mr. Hustad had the greatest impact on me. From teaching me how to make learning fun, to having a class be my safe space where I could laugh, learn, and bond with my classmates and teacher. He was a teacher that has always been there for me and has always pushed me to be my best self.”

I would like to thank Ms. Falk for everything she has done. Ms. Falk is a special person. She is accountable, organized, thorough, and curious. She re-researches her lessons every year, and allows for students to pick how and when they push themselves in her class. Ms. Falk is not only a teacher that inspires me to be a better person, but she is an ally both in and out of the classroom.”
I will always remember the experiences where I have been able to spend time outside of the classroom, like the canoeing orientation trip in Canyonlands. Our group slept under the stars and spent our evenings laughing by the camp re, surrounded by the beauty of Utah.”
My favorite meeting with my Kindergarten buddy was de nitely carving pumpkins with her on Halloween. It was so nice to be able to help her carve a pumpkin with her name on it. I saw how much joy that simple act brought her and it really helped me see life through a new perspective where I appreciate all the little things in life.”

Mr. Sweeney had the greatest impact to the growth of my personal leadership skills. He is sel ess and he seems to genuinely enjoy his work. He has mentored me all through high school in the many leadership positions I have had. I’m not sure what kind of person I would be without his guidance.”

Dr. Drescher and Mrs. Blakslee have been extremely helpful. They are always positive and willing to assist you in any way they can. Even if it was just listening to me rant about my problems, they are always there.”
