2022 ANNUAL REPORT

WE ARE VALLEY HEALTH FOUNDATION

Nearly 35 years ago, something special was invented in Silicon Valley. It wasn’t made of code, but of a conviction that everyone in Santa Clara County should have access to high-quality healthcare, regardless of ability to pay, and that all of us have a role to play in ensuring this happens.

This organization was born from that idea, one of the first private foundations in the United States created to support a public County hospital. Together, we accomplished a lot in the last three decades. We raised over $150 million in donations and secured another $1 billion in public funds through ballot measure campaigns to build a new hospital, a downtown San Jose health center, and expand essential public services County-wide.

During that time, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center grew as well. Two new hospitals joined the family in 2019 – O’Connor Hospital and St. Louise Regional Hospital, each with its own important legacy of excellence and service. These hospitals made us the Foundation for Northern California’s largest and best public healthcare system.

With that new mission, we knew it was time for a new name, and we thought that this would be a big project for 2020. And 2020 said, “Not so fast.”

So, it is with a mixture of great pride and great relief that on May 15, 2023, we officially became Valley Health Foundation.

This change comes not a moment too soon. Our region is facing a mental health crisis that is especially acute among adolescents and young people. Addiction, violence, poverty, and homelessness continue to drive hospitalizations, exhausting an already stressed healthcare workforce. In the face of difficult economic conditions, other local hospitals are reducing essential services, placing more pressure on the public system than ever before.

With your support, we’re ready to confront these challenges head on. Santa Clara County can be the healthiest community in the United States, where all residents have access to the highest quality health services. Let’s turn that vision into reality.

Rehab Pool: You help to support critical equipment, including Josh’s favorite therapy pool, which includes an underwater treadmill.

Supporting patients, healthcare professionals, and the community remains at the core of Valley Health Foundation’s mission. VHF supports Santa Clara County’s public hospitals and clinics in providing care to all.

In 2018, Josh sustained a traumatic brain injury from a biking accident while on a family vacation in Maui. His wife Mary learned about Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s Traumatic Brain Injury Unit and Josh was transferred by medical flight from Hawaii to SCVMC. Josh spent 2 months at SCVMC’s award-winning Rehabilitation Center working with a multi-disciplinary team to regain his basic functions.

In his own words, Josh shared:

“My experience at SCVMC was overwhelmingly positive, from each doctor who treated me, to the many nurses who cared for me (including those who spent the night in my room when I needed to be under observation), to all of the therapists who worked with me on a daily basis. I have fond memories of sessions in the pool, and I remember the feeling of liberation as I could walk and move much more easily in the water. I feel blessed to have come so far, and I am a proud supporter of Valley Health Foundation so that others in need can receive similar, excellent care.”

Today, Josh has been able to return to his job and his life with your help! You helped to support the specialized pool that Josh used in his rehabilitation as well as many of the other equipment and resources he used to help him recover.

INNOVATE

With your support, Valley Health Foundation leads and promotes new solutions for a healthier Santa Clara County and empowers healthcare professionals to build a healthcare system that truly works for everyone.

You help to innovate towards better health for all through your support of:

• Adopting best practice models of care

• Funding leading-edge technology

• Innovative community-based health programs

With your support, VHF helps fund innovative solutions to make sure high quality care is accessible to all. An example is the Santa Clara County’s new Complex Care Services Program which provides additional individualized support to those who need it most.

Housed within the program is the Integrated Care Team (ICT) that specializes in working with patients with severe behavioral and executive functioning disorders. It is one of only a few teams across the country that specifically serves this population using this model.

Together, we make sure that high quality care is accessible no matter where patients are and the barriers they may face.

Unemployed and unhoused, Peter was struggling to manage his bipolar disorder and anxiety during this difficult time. Peter was eventually connected to the Valley Homeless Healthcare Program - but he had difficulty navigating the resources available and being consistent with his appointments.

Before he was connected to the Integrated Care Team, Peter was averaging 4-5 visits to the Emergency Room per month. “A lot of patients with cognitive and behavioral issues don’t know how to use the system and it strains the system while not being the most effective way for them to receive care,” ICT Care Coordinator Vince Beardsley shared.

Vince reached out to Peter in August 2022 and was able to provide Peter with clothing and other essentials thanks to the support of Valley Health Foundation (and you!).

Vince helped Peter get reconnected to the health system and provided support, including regular check-ins and transportation, to help him follow through with his appointments. He and his team also helped Peter connect to community resources, including stable housing.

Thanks to working with the ICT, Peter is able to better manage his health and has only had 8 ER visits since last August. Today, he lives in an independent living facility and is working towards finding a job.

ADVOCATE

You advocate alongside Valley Health Foundation to bring visibility to our most pressing healthcare challenges and give voice and quality care to our most vulnerable community members.

You help to advocate better health for all through:

• Advocating for and funding programs that address health disparities and promote health equity

• Supporting outreach and education around high quality care

• Supporting advocacy for public campaigns and ballot measures that bring resources towards critical services

When you give, you do more than fund health services. You also bring visibility to our most pressing healthcare challenges and help find solutions to gaps in care.

Started in 2021, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Santa Clara County (CAC) is an inclusive, child-focused program supporting children experiencing physical or sexual abuse or neglect.

The CAC is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and holistic environment for all the children and families who come through their doors.

“Previously, it was an ordeal for the children after they suffered the most difficult days of their lives,” Medical Director Dr. Marlene Sturm said. “With the CAC model, the child is at the center and the services come to the children instead of the children having to travel to visit all the services.”

With an “all under one roof approach,” the CAC multidisciplinary team approach brings professionals, government agencies, and community organizations, who collaborate to offer comprehensive services including law enforcement investigations, child protective services, prosecution, mental health, medical services, and victim advocacy.

The CAC includes a medical clinic, workspaces for protective services for forensic interviews, counseling spaces, and other multipurpose spaces that ensure all its partners can provide their services to children and their family members. With your support, Valley Health Foundation helped the CAC expand their staff and their space, transforming a room into additional therapy space that can be used for children and their family members, including parents, siblings, and other caregivers.

At the CAC, it’s important that children can advocate for themselves. “Often when they come to the CAC, their voice has been taken from them,” Dr. Sturm said. “Here at the CAC, they are always allowed to choose and offered different options. We never tell them what to do. If they don’t want to have medical care that day, that’s okay and we can schedule it later. Our doors are always open to them.”

SINCE APRIL 2021, THE CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY (CAC) HAS SERVED 1,435 CHILDREN AND YOUTH EXPERIENCING ABUSE OR NEGLECT.

Thank you for supporting Valley Health Foundation

There is so much we have done together in 2022, and this Annual Report captures just a small fraction of what you make possible and the lives that your generosity touches. Our new name is truly a reflection of how much the work we accomplish together has and continues to grow.

Together, in 2022, we supported the launch of a new Clinician Wellness Task Force to promote wellness for the dedicated clinicians in our public healthcare system. We partnered with Santa Clara County to administer and distribute $10 million in COVID-19 recovery funds to local nonprofit organizations. We also empowered Santa Clara Valley Healthcare staff in starting an innovative multi-disciplinary clinic for children with feeding issues and help to advocate for safer, healthier communities through a $100,000 grant towards violence prevention in East San Jose.

Every day, you not only support patients of all ages, backgrounds, and diagnoses, but the healthcare professionals that provide the highest quality of care and vital communitybased programs beyond the clinical setting. You enable innovation in our public healthcare system and in our community by investing in new models of care, technology, research, and community-based health. You recognize that health is a fundamental human right and advocate better health for all through a focus on health equity, health disparities, and our most vulnerable in everything we do.

What you give to our community is truly immeasurable. I am so honored and grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside you towards a vision of making Santa Clara County the healthiest community in America.
