“Why should I donate to a public hospital system? Doesn’t the government pay for everything?” I get this question all the time, and I understand why. Our public hospital system in Santa Clara County is a marvel, thanks to decades of investment from local taxpayers and the extraordinary dedication of the best healthcare professionals in the businesses. State-of-the-art facilities, world-class services, and a rock-solid commitment to providing care for all make Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospitals & Clinics the best of its kind in the United States. It has been that way for so long that taking it for granted becomes easy. But the truth is that our public healthcare system is fragile. Needs continue to grow faster than resources, care providers are asked to do more and more, and this community’s health needs are only growing more complex. Building and maintaining a healthcare system that can meet these challenges takes all of us. In many ways, the biggest threat to our public health isn’t a virus, junk food, or an illicit substance. It’s complacency. That’s where we come in.
The Valley Medical Center Foundation was founded to protect our healthcare safety net and to help it innovate and grow. We’ve been going strong for 30+ years. From the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to a Creekside homeless encampment, we put your dollars into action, helping frontline workers care for the most vulnerable in our community. Your support has real, measurable impacts on health outcomes for thousands. And it’s the antidote to the disease that is complacency. In partnership with the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits, VMC Foundation took on the role of becoming the PPE distribution center for the community and distributed PPE to 123 community organizations across the South Bay, enabling them to continue providing critical services to the community safely. The VMC Foundation has also coordinated distribution of supplies to health care workers and community organizations donated generously by community members like you!

Here at the VMC Foundation, access is important to us. For our youngest community members, that includes creating a welcoming, child-friendly environment wherever they receive care. That’s exactly what the VMC Foundation set out to do when we partnered with the County to transform Fairgrounds Expo Hall, a mass vaccination site, into a vibrant jungle experience. Your support made it possible to transform the space – as well as continue to support the vaccination site as it starts to 5childrenvaccinationsprovideforunderyearsold!

ADMINISTERED AT THIS VACCINATION SITE AND COUNTING
Organized by the Nursing Wellness Committee, Nurses Wellness carts make their rounds every month across not only nursing departments, but also other areas of the hospitals and Valley Specialty Center clinics to provide fun games and giveaways, as well as information on Wellness resources and activities for staff. The VMC Foundation helps to stock the carts with a variety of giveaways and partners with the committee to organize Wellness activities.
The VMC Foundation works in partnership with the SCVMC and County leadership to support the mental and physical well-being of healthcare workers through a variety of activities and projects.
Healing our Healthcare Workers is an on-going initiative focused on those who have been at the frontlines of COVID-19.
The cart gives [staff] a brief pause to laugh, get a snack, compete with coworkers to see who spins for the best prize. This laughter, picture taking and pause in a stressful day can change one’s perspective and builds resiliency. The response has been overwhelming. The VMC Foundation helped with the creation of the Lavender Room at O’Connor Hospital, which offers a calming space for healthcare workers during their stressful day. Several other similar rooms have since been built across SCVMC’s hospitals.

The room is painted a soothing lavender color and filled with relaxing lighting. It also includes comfortable chairs, refreshments and snacks, tablets pre-filled with meditation exercises, and more.

The program focuses on bridging the gap between leaving the hospital and going home while caring for the most fragile infants. BRIDGE Nurse Practitioners visit families in their homes to help monitor the infants’ care, growth and development, as well as connect the family to vital community resources. With support from Sunlight Giving and the Foundation, the program has continued their services throughout the pandemic, providing their care safely while offering a sense of normalcy to families during a time where they face additional barriers.
VHHP provides not only healthcare to people experiencing homelessness, but wraparound support services to help them be well.
The population we serve have a lot of barriers that makes the traditional system not work for them. For many of our patients, we are their only source of support, and our staff never give up on them. We believe everyone deserves dignity and the highest quality of care.”

VHHP’s interdisciplinary team includes primary care doctors, psychologists, outreach workers, social workers, lawyers, and even a dietician that meet their clients where they are, using a combination of fixed sites, mobile sites, and a Backpack Medicine team. During the pandemic, your support for the Foundation helped us partner with VHHP to quickly secure masks, hand sanitizers, and other life-saving items – and every day, you continue to help the program meet the urgent needs of some of our most vulnerable neighbors, like food, blankets, and clothing.

After surviving the Killing Fields in Cambodia, we came to the United States as refugees. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center was a ray of hope in a desperate time of need in regards to providing healthcare for my family and me. At an early age, VMC had a huge impact that changed my life. It is one of the reasons I was inspired to become a nurse and why I wanted to work for Valley Medical Center.
