LOVE LET TER TO THE OCEAN Atlantis has always been a responsible citizen. We don’t simply care; we celebrate, protect, observe, immerse and support our ocean as an organization and as inhabitants of this earth. As an ocean resort, Atlantis has a meaningful connection with the sea and is committed to protecting and restoring the surrounding ecology of the breathtaking Bahamas. The Bahamas is not only known for sandy beaches and luxury resorts, but also as a habitat for various marine species. The country is made up of more than 700 islands that spread across more than 100,000 square miles of ocean. The third largest barrier reef in the world is located here, making it a haven for a diverse selection of marine life.
PRIDE Throughout the resort, we introduce our guests to over 250 species of marine life (over 50,000 marine animals in total). We have the LARGEST open-air marine habitat in the world. The marine operation at Atlantis is an impressive technical feat – over 60 million gallons of sea water is circulated daily through its 14 acres of lagoons and sanctuaries. The resort has over 11 million gallons of saltwater lagoons and sanctuaries throughout the property. We have created a home and haven for bottlenose dolphins at Dolphin Cay, including 17 dolphins and 14 sea lions that were rescued after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home. Our marine mammal team, consisting of over 165 dedicated marine biologists, researchers, lab technicians, behaviorists and veterinarians, focus on the care, rehabilitation and protection of marine life. We have a state-of-the-art Rescue and Rehabilitation Center where we treat injured marine life such as sea turtles, manatees and dolphins. We release hundreds of endangered baby green sea turtles each year to help increase the wild population numbers.
Our highly skilled marine team were the first, and still the only, team in the world to have reproductive success of the critically endangered smalltooth sawfish. We cultivate and donate hundreds of mangroves each year to help restore wetlands around The Bahamas. Some of these projects include the Victoria Pond Restoration project in George Town, Exuma and Bonefish Pond near Cowpen Road. Mangrove habitats are important because they are home to over 100 species of marine life. We have created coral nurseries where we propagate corals. Our team transplant these corals in areas where the reefs are struggling to survive. We organize beach and reef cleanups to remove pollutants such as plastics, metals, glass and other debris to help make the environment healthier and cleaner for our marine life and local community. We educate our local community about ocean conservation by participating in science fairs, career workshops, environmental events and other speaking engagements.
THE BAHAMAS AND THE CORAL REEF The Bahamas is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world. Its sustainability is vital to the marine ecosystem as reefs provide food and shelter for a vast array of marine life in addition to protecting shorelines and preserving beaches. Our Marine Team works with The Atlantis Blue Project Foundation and other environmental organizations to help restore Bahamian coral reefs. Hurricane Damage – Atlantis completed a successful two-day harvesting and outplanting of corals to three coral reefs off New Providence that were destroyed from Hurricane Matthew. With the help of Atlantis Marine Team members, The Bahamas National Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation and Stuart Cove, Dr. Craig Dahlgren, Director of the Perry Institute of Marine Science & Coral Reef Scientist, led a team to harvest 150 pieces of finger coral from one of Atlantis’ two on-property nurseries and 100 pieces of staghorn coral from nurseries established by The Nature Conservancy and managed by Stuart Cove. The 2-inch coral fragments or cuttings were placed on lines or tree structures at the nurseries and monitored as they grew at rates faster than they normally do on reefs. Once the corals were deemed healthy and large enough, they were placed back on the coral reefs in the ocean through multiple dives to sites that have been degraded by storm damage and human impacts.
ATLANTIS BLUE PROJECT FOUNDATION The Atlantis Blue Project Foundation (ABPF) is the resort’s private non-profit 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to saving marine species and their extraordinary habitats throughout The Bahamas and surrounding Caribbean seas. It accomplishes these goals by funding scientific research, conservation and education programs, and through community outreach efforts. Specific projects involve coral reef restoration, marine animal rehabilitation and release, sea turtle conservation and nest protection, establishment of marine protected areas, marine mammal stranding response, and manatee health assessments. As a result of the work done through the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, in partnership with The Bahamas National Trust and The Nature Conservancy, 1.4 million acres of pristine marine habitat and important nursery grounds on the west side of Andros Island is a now protected safe haven for many of our native species.
DOLPHIN CAY Dolphin Cay is home to a family of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions who live harmoniously in one of the world’s largest and finest open-air habitats. You’ll meet a full-time team of marine-mammal specialists and veterinarians who look after these complex, personable, extraordinary creatures 365 days a year. And you’ll marvel at the scope and beauty of a 14-acre environment encompassing a lagoon, complete with coves and sandy beaches. Gracing the west side of the Atlantis resort property, Dolphin Cay is simply a must-see destination in its own right: a world-class, state-of-the-art marine habitat dedicated to conservation, rehabilitation, education — and wonder.
In 2005, amidst the widespread devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the world watched anxiously as unprecedented rescue efforts were made for the dolphins and sea lions that had lost their Gulfport, MI, habitat in the wreckage of the storm. As international experts consulted on the best long-term plan for the animals, the hungry and injured creatures were cared for right in the Gulf where they’d been recovered, then temporarily housed in inland swimming pools and mobile pools provided by the US Navy. Restoring the dolphins to health and safety was the first priority, but reuniting them in a permanent home was the ultimate goal — one that was finally achieved when Atlantis committed the resources to build a habitat and rehabilitation center worthy of these magnificent animals.
Visitors to Dolphin Cay can participate in a variety of innovative programs allowing them to observe or interact with the animals in ways that enrich humans and marine mammals alike — and all while helping to fund the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation’s conservation efforts. For many visitors, it’s much more than a man-meets-nature activity. Encounters with these playful, inquisitive mammals have been described as healing, transcendent, and even spiritual experiences.
TURTLES HATC HL I N G R EL EASE Every year, female green sea turtles lay their eggs on the resort’s Hibiscus Lagoon nesting beaches. Once they hatch (during the late summer and early fall months) guests are able to sign up and help Atlantis’ team of Aquarists guide the hatchlings to the sea. The team of Atlantis marine experts study the species extensively and choose to release the baby turtles within 24-48 hours following the time of turtle births, as it is the best way to ensure the animals adapt quickly to their natural ocean environment. By launching programs like this for guests, Atlantis hopes to help increase the wild population numbers of the endangered green sea turtles. Guests who participate in the program receive a behind-the-scenes look of how the marine team cares for sea turtles and all the other marine life at Atlantis.
SEA T U RT L E AD OPT I ON PR OGRA M In addition to the newborn hatchling releases at Atlantis, the resort also gives guests an opportunity to adopt a juvenile sea turtle (2-3 years of age) and help to release it into the ocean. Guests chose a name for their adopted sea turtle and join members of the Atlantis Marine Team on one of Atlantis’ private boats for the opportunity to snorkel alongside turtles at the release site. At the end of the program, guests receive an official certificate of adoption and photos from the day’s special events.
ENDANGERED SPECIES SMAL LTOOT H SAW F I SH Atlantis is the FIRST (and still only) marine habitat in the world to have had a successful birth of the critically-endangered smalltooth sawfish. Our Marine Life team conducts important research on this species and it continues to be a main priority of ours to help protect this species within The Bahamas and surrounding seas. Researchers believe that there may only be as few as 10 mature female sawfish left in the breeding population established on the West side of Andros Island! In early 2019, Atlantis hosted a Sawfish Workshop and a group of Biologists from the US, Cuba and Bahamas met on property to discuss the smalltooth sawfish populations in the Caribbean, work being conducted with sawfish protection and public educuation, and next steps needed to pass legislation to protect sawfish in the Bahamas. Our Atlantis Blue Project foundation helps continue to fund this research work.
SEAHOR SES Atlantis features an exhibit at The Dig Marine Habitat This small habitat is home to our longsnout and lined seahorses. When reproducing, the female seahorse deposits her eggs inside the male’s brood pouch. The male then carries the developing babies until they are born. Seahorses have become threatened for a variety of reasons, including loss of habitat.
THE LAGOONS OF ATLANTIS Our Hibiscus Lagoon is an incredible underwater world. Home to green sea turtles, triggerfish, and Bermuda chubs, this is a special opportunity for vacationers to explore breathtaking marine habitats.
MANTA RAYS Atlantis is home to more than 100 sharks and one of only TWO aquariums in the Western Hemisphere to exhibit, care for and study giant manta rays. Atlantis has successfully released and tracked manta rays into the ocean as part of its research and release program. In October 2021, a team of marine aquarists successfully completed the transfer of a manta nicknamed Hope from the resort’s 2.7-million gallon marine habitat back into the Atlantic Ocean, as part of their renowned release and research program. Hope’s transfer marks the 15th manta ray release for the resort, whose marine husbandry practices and research have contributed greatly to data collection of the species. As part of its research efforts in tagging manta rays, Atlantis along with one of its partners, Mote Marine Laboratory, track the released manta’s journey and record depth and temperature ranges. This information helps researchers better understand the migratory patterns and habits of mantas, and is valuable to facilities that care for mantas, marine researchers, educators and policy makers, as they work in tandem to protect and learn more about this one-of-a-kind, mysterious giant of the marine world.
