lguna vez se ha preguntado por qué Michigan fue llamado Michigan? Antes de la colonización, el ahora Estado de los Grandes Lagos era el hogar de al menos ocho tribus nativas americanas por toda la tierra, una de las cuales eran los indios Ojibwe.

ave you ever wondered how Michigan was named Michigan? Before colonization, the now Great Lakes State was home to at least eight Native American tribes throughout the land, one of which being the Ojibwe Indians. The Ojibwe were the first people to openly interact with the French in Michigan, trading furs and knowledge of the area for guns and goods.

Through translation, the state of Michigan was named after the Ojibwe Indian word “Michigama,” which means “great lake” or “land surrounded by water.”

With this in mind, we invite you to take a look at some other uniquely-named destinations found across the Great Lakes State.

1. Mackinac Island This is an easy one. If you’re a native Michigander, you know that this popular Northern Michigan destination is correctly pronounced “MACK-in-awe Island”. Tourists have visited Mackinac Island in the summers to escape the heat of the cities for hundreds of years. Condé Nast Traveler magazine added Mackinac Island to its “World’s Best” list as one of the top 10 islands in the world.

In December 2007 National Geographic Traveler magazine named Mackinac Island as the top island destination in the United States and 8th in the world. Don’t forget the fudge!

2. Ypsilanti IP-sill-ANN-tee, or Ypsi to those who know it well, is located just down the road from Ann Arbor. Home to Eastern Michigan University, the city was originally a trading post set up in 1809 and called Woodruff’s Grove after Major Thomas Woodruff. The name was later changed to Ypsilanti in 1829 in honor of Demetrius Ypsilanti. Ypsilanti was a hero in the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire.

the city in North Carolina, guess again! SharLOT (Not Char-lit) is located southwest of Lansing and home to some of the most beautiful historical buildings in Michigan.

Charlotte annually welcomes visitors to experience the Eaton County Fair in mid-July and the pioneer spirit of the ever-popular Frontier Days in early September.

4. Bois Blanc Island Bois Blanc Island, known as “Bob-LOW,” is located in the Straits of Mackinac, near the top of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. You can reach the Island by ferry from Cheboygan, a few miles southeast of Mackinaw City. From the island’s west end, one can see the Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island. You can catch a distant glimpse of the Upper Peninsula from the north shore.

5. Dowagiac The Grand Old City of southwestern Michigan. Dowagiac, pronounced Doe-WAH-jak, is nestled within the Fruit Belt, the city is surrounded by rolling farmlands and abundant orchards. Enjoy fishing, canoeing, boating, water skiing and ice fishing. Be sure to tour the historic train depot, too!

6. Onondaga The small town of ON-on-DOG-ah is located near Lansing in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The township and community were named after the Iroquois nation of Onondaga, historically based in New York. A post office was first established at the place about 1844, with Perez Howland as the first postmaster. In 1847 Perez Howland built a grocery, where the post office was operated out of. Today, Onondaga offers man hometown restaurants and taverns for visitors to enjoy. If you’re looking for something sweet, check out Balzer Blueberries of Onondaga, a U-Pick Pure Michigan treat!

7. Ocqueoc Ocqueoc is home to the largest waterfall

in the Lower Peninsula. In addition to the falls, there is access to the Ocqueoc Falls Bicentennial Pathway, which includes loop lengths from six miles to three miles where you’re free to hike, cross country ski or bike.

“Ah-KEY-ock” is the perfect place to get lost and explore the beautiful nature of Pure Michigan.

8. Ontonagon Ontonagon County on the south shore of Lake Superior includes the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park , created in 1945. Famous locations in the park include the Lake of the Clouds, one of the most scenic spots in all of Michigan and Summit Peak Observation Tower, one of the highest points in found in the state. For history buffs, there are self-guided trails to old mining sites on the Union Mine Scenic Trail, and the Nonesuch Mine location. A trip to “On-TONogg-en” should be on every Michiganders bucket list!

9. Bete Grise Beet grease, you say? Not quite! Bay-DEGree can be found southwest of Copper Harbor on Keweenaw County’s south shore.

Bete Grise (French for “Grey Beast”) has a beautiful white sand beach as well as a wetland preserve stretching along Lake Superior.

10. Kitch-iti-kipi Pronounced Kitch-ITI-kip-e (say that five times fast!) is another U.P. gem located in scenic Palms Book State Park. Known as “The Big Spring”, Michigan’s largest freshwater spring is two hundred feet across and 40 feet deep. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone as the flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degree Fahrenheit.

By means of a self-operated observation raft, visitors are guided to vantage points overlooking fascinating underwater features and fantasies.

Científico hispano crea tecnología que permite

controlar sillas de rueda con el cerebro

C

uando Ramsés Alcaide llegó a la Universidad de Michigan en 2010, tenía un objetivo en mente: ayudar a las personas con discapacidad a participar más plenamente en el mundo.

Alcaide, 30, quien nació en México y emigró con su familia a EE.UU cuando tenía cinco años, ansiaba ayudar a su tío, Margarito Aguirre, quien perdió el uso de ambas piernas tras chocar en su camión cuando Alcaide tenía ocho años.

El accidente, recuerda Alcaide, provocaría una pasión para encontrar maneras de ayudar a las personas con discapacidades vivir una vida más plena.

“Desde entonces he dedicado mi vida a crear un mundo sin limitaciones, donde podemos combinar aspectos de máquinas e ingeniería con el cerebro para crear nuevos métodos para que la gente interactúe con el mundo”.

Trabajando con Tech Transfer de la U-M, Alcaide desarrolló la tecnología del laboratorio de interfaz directa del cerebro (Direct Brain Interface Laboratory) de la UM y creó una nueva startup, Neurable. El sistema interpreta ondas cerebrales permite el control preciso y flexible de dispositivos como juguetes, coches, sillas de ruedas, televisores y videojuegos.

El sistema de Neurable consiste en una gorra que puede detectar la actividad de las ondas cerebrales y convertirlas en acción. Aunque Alcaide demuestra el software moviendo un coche de Lego, ha controlado también sillas de ruedas e incluso demostró la tecnología moviendo un Nissan Versa en Discovery Channel.

“Hay una señal del cerebro que puedes ver en nuestro logotipo, la P300. Detectamos la señal en la actividad del cerebro de la persona y entonces el artículo que desea seleccionar genera esta señal cerebral”, dijo. “Es como un truco del cerebro que se puede utilizar de muchas maneras”.

“Creo que lo que era único sobre Ramsés es que él se aprovechó todos los recursos que estaban disponibles en todo el sistema universitario”, dijo Tom Frank, director del Centro de Emprendimiento en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la U-M. “Eso en entre raro y atípico”.

Estudió ingeniería eléctrica en la Universidad de Washington. Dijo que se dio cuenta de que para lograr lo que él quería la clave estaba en la neurociencia, no la ingeniería, así que se trasladó a la U-M para hacer su doctorado en neurociencias, trabajando con Jane Huggins, Ph.D. investigadora principal en el laboratorio de conexión directa del cerebro Direct Brain Interface Laboratory.

amses Alcaide arrived at the University of Michigan in 2010 with one goal in mind: to help people with disabilities engage more fully with the world. He is almost there.

Working with U-M Tech Transfer, Alcaide advanced technology developed at the U-M Direct Brain Interface Laboratory and created a new startup. Neurable has developed a brain wave interpretation system that allows for uniquely precise and flexible control of devices such as toys, cars, wheelchairs, TVs and video games.

Neurable’s system involves a cap that can detect brain wave activity and turn it into action. He demonstrates the software by moving a Lego Mindstorm car, but has also controlled wheelchairs and a Nissan Versa.

“There’s a brain signal you can see in our logo, the P300. We detect that signal inside the person’s brain activity and then the item they want selected generates this brain signal every time,” he said. “It’s kind of a brain hack that can be used in many ways.”

Alcaide’s use of the university’s resources serves as a master class for other student startups on how to leverage the U-M entrepreneurial ecosystem.

tute, the Alumni Association, the School of Information and the Medical School at various times.

“I think what was unique about Ramses is he availed himself of all of the resources that were available throughout the university system,” said Tom Frank, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at U-M’s College of Engineering. “It is somewhere between rare and atypical.”

Ramses Alcaide was born in Mexico, moved to the U.S. when he was five years old and grew up in Seattle. Three years later, a beloved uncle was in a trucking accident that severed both legs. The accident sparked in Alcaide a lifelong passion to find a way to help people with severe disabilities interact with the world.

He spent much of his childhood tinkering with toys like Nintendo entertainment systems.

“I used to buy them broken, fix them and sell them back. I guess that also shows how I was an entrepreneur, even from a young age.”

He studied electrical engineering at the University of Washington and moved to U-M to work on his doctorate in neuroscience, working with Jane Huggins, Ph.D., principal investigator at the U-M Direct Brain Interface Laboratory.

“Her lab is one of the few in the world that really focuses on taking brain-computer interface technology and integrating it into real

world applications instead of just theory,” Alcaide said.

He initially used the technology, which he developed in his first three-month stint at Huggins’ lab, to help children with cerebral palsy take cognitive tests. He applied it in various projects for Huggins.

Huggins received a grant in 2008 for research into using the brain-computer interface to adjust the position of the seat on a power wheelchair in what they called the hold and release project. It was the term project she gave Alcaide during his 2010 rotation in her lab and what they submitted in the patent application in 2014.

Market research was important for Neurable, Huggins said, because it’s hard in the disability community to establish the size of the population that might need a particular technology.

“It’s a level of impairment where people become invisible.”

While the shift to gaming makes sense, Huggins worries that the product could diverge from how it could be used to help people with disabilities.

“It’s wonderful that Ramses has this kind of opportunity,” said Huggins, a scientific advisor to Neurable. “When I talk to Ramses about long-term, he’s very passionate about helping people with impairments.”

e ha encendido una luz de alerta tras que un estudio reciente revelara dos realidades que son inminentes; la primera se trata del aumento acelerado del Alzheimer dentro de la población latina y la segunda el impacto que este provocará en la economía de los Estados Unidos.

La publicación titulada “Latinos y la Enfermedad de Alzheimer: Nuevos Números detrás de la Crisis”, a cargo del Instituto para el Envejecimiento Edward R Roybal y de Latinos Against Alzheimer, proyecta que el padecimiento va a crecer de 379 mil en el 2012 a 1.1 millones para el 2030 y a 3.5 millones en el 2060, lo que significa un aumento del 832 por ciento.

“No es solamente el crecimiento de la prevalencia que resulta alarmante; son también las tasas altas de síndrome metabólico y diabetes que alientan el aumento de la enfermedad a niveles mucho más allá de las tasas esperadas en la población estadounidense”, dijo William Vega, coautor del reporte y director ejecutivo del Instituto para el Envejecimiento Roybal.

Por lo tanto, los costos acumulados directos e indirectos, incluyendo millones de cuidadores familiares, costarán 373 billones de dólares para el 2030 y 2.35 trillones de dólares para el 2060, dando como resultado, a lo que muchos llaman, una crisis en la salud pública del país.

warning light has lit up after a recent study revealed two realities that are imminent; the first is the rapid increase of Alzheimer’s disease within the Latino population, and the second is the impact that this may have on the economy of the United States.

A publication titled "Latinos & Alzheimer's Disease: New Numbers Behind the Crisis," released by the University of Southern California (USC) Edward R. Roybal Institute on Aging at the USC School of Social Work and Latinos Against Alzheimer, projected that the number of Latinos living with Alzheimer’s will increase from 379,000 in 2012 to 1.1 million by 2030 and to 3.5 million by 2060, which means an increase of 832 percent.

“It is not only the growth of the prevalence that is concerning. It is also the very high metabolic syndrome and diabetes rates that are fueling the increase in Alzheimer’s to levels well beyond expected rates in the U.S. population,” said William Vega, co-author of the report and executive director of the USC Roybal Institute on Aging.

Therefore, per the report findings, “cumulative direct and indirect costs for Latinos with Alzheimer’s disease will cost the U.S. economy $373 billion by 2030 and $2.35 trillion (in 2012 dollars) by 2060,” resulting in what many call a crisis in the nation's public health.

And it is a crisis because the direct cost

includes long-term medical care expenses, while indirect costs include the unpaid salaries to informal caregivers and the revenue lost by people with Alzheimer's disease. Although it is more likely that Latinos will seek more affordable medical care options, the total cost will exceed the cost for the non-Latino whites.

According to Shnyi Wu, co-author of the report and a scientist at the Roybal Institute on Aging, “due to demographic and familystructure shifts among Latinos, there will be a lower ratio of younger generations able to take care of older generations living with Alzheimer’s, placing significant societal and economic stress on Latinos.”

Another reality that emphasizes the study is the need to cope with the inequality in health care affecting Latinos. Due to the advanced age and socio-economic determinants, they have more than a 50 percent probability of suffering the disease more than the non-Latino whites, but they are less likely to receive medical diagnoses. Therefore, Hispanic participation in clinical tests that focus on the treatment and prevention is just about one percent.

The goal of the study is to ensure that the nation is ready to face these disparities, and for that, it proposes to focus on the urgent need to invest in research, health education, and clinical tests for the Latin community.

Solutions for immediate action recommended • Increase research funding for Alzheimer’s to at least $2 billion annually.

• Improve access to caregiver resources and informal training for caregivers in multiple languages.

• Grow the enrollment of Latinos in clinical trials by developing recruitment strategies and trial designs that better reflect the demographic heterogeneity, social needs and economic realities of Latino communities.

• Recruit and train a more diverse health care provider workforce to address low diagnosis rates and improve treatment and care of Latinos living with Alzheimer’s.

• Advocate for federal- and state-based action plans and goals for eliminating disparities in Alzheimer’s diagnosis, care and research participation rates.

t is an adolescent’s job to gain the confidence to be able to stand on his own. As challenging as it is to watch our children grow up, it is critical to their well-being and to the health of our relationships that we honor their growing independence. When we hold them back they rebel against us. When we monitor their safety while guiding them towards independence sometimes actively and sometimes by getting out of the way they appreciate us. When our children know that we supported them to become independent, they will return to us for that interdependence that defines loving families well beyond childhood.

It’s everyday issues, even seemingly mundane ones, that trigger most parent-child struggles and offer opportunities for fostering independence.

Your child thinks she should be allowed a new privilege just because she’s a certain age or because her friends are doing it, but she might lack the skills needed to manage the situation.

If you focus on preparing your adolescent, you will turn potential sources of conflict and rebellion into opportunities for your child to master new skills and demonstrate responsibility.

Adolescence is naturally filled with opportunities for trial and error and ultimately success.

Your challenge is to make sure your adolescent learns from day-to-day mistakes rather than views them as catastrophes. At the same time you need to be vigilant in helping your teen avoid those errors that could cause irreparable harm. Just as importantly, you want to ensure your child doesn’t miss out on the many possibilities for growth that are coming along.

The answer to when your child is ready to

meet a new challenge is about recognizing when there are enough pieces in place so the chances for success are enhanced. A request by your 14 year old to spend the afternoon at the mall won’t hinge on answering on the spot “Is she old enough?” if you’ve taught her, in part through your example, about spending wisely and treating clerks with respect.

The day your teen begins to drive won’t be so nerve-wracking if you’ve modeled safe driving behaviors and made it clear you will monitor your teen’s progress even after he gets his license.

Sometimes you should start by doing some observing. Think back to when you baby-proofed your home. If you just guessed what needed safeguarding, you might have missed some opportunities to protect your baby. The first step was to walk around on your knees and see the surroundings at the same level as your toddler.

Once you saw the world from his vantage point, you knew to turn that pot handle inward. That same sort of observing getting a “kid’s eye view” of the mall or the route to school will heighten your senses about the challenges your teen is likely to encounter. You’ll be better positioned to think of how best to phase in new privileges and what kinds of support and monitoring need to be in place to help things go smoothly.

It is important to use a step-by-step approach to allow your child to demonstrate he’s ready to assume more responsibility. A thoughtful stepwise strategy will help both your child and you gain confidence, and will allow you to give a little bit of rope at a time and tighten up again as needed.

Relleno de jamón

l día de Acción de Gracias es una celebración muy Americana. Mis padres probablemente nunca la celebraron en Cuba, pero desde que vivimos aquí, mi familia ha adoptado la celebración y la hemos hecho nuestra, ¡especialmente a la hora de la comida!

Mientras que el pavo es la estrella del Acción de Gracias tradicional, a nosotros los cubanos nos gusta añadir una pierna de cerdo en nuestra mesa. Mi familia incluso hace el relleno con cerdo. Me encanta el sabor con nuez moscada, ajo y jerez y esparcirlo con pasas y almendras.

Luego están las guarniciones. Quizás puré de papas, pero nosotros preferimos los plátanos en abundancia. La cazuela de plátanos dulces es nuestra respuesta a la de camotes. Y preferimos frijoles negros y arroz a la cazuela que judías verdes. Ya me dio hambre de solamente pensar en todo esto. Pruebe algunas de mis recetas favoritas para Acción de Gracias, abajo. Espero que las disfrute tanto como mi familia y mis amigos.

Preparación • Precalentar el horno a 350 grados F. Engrasar un molde rectangular para cazuelas.

• Derrita la mantequilla en una cacerola grande a fuego medio.

Añada la cebolla y el ajo, y saltéelo durante 5 a 7 minutos hasta que la cebolla se suaviza. Añada el jamón, el queso crema y el vino seco y cocine durante 10 minutos mezclando frecuentemente o hasta que los ingredientes estén incorporados completamente. Hacer a un lado.

• Coloque los trozos de pan en un contenedor grande. Combine la nuez moscada, sal, pimienta y crema en un contendor pequeño y añada la mezcla sobre el pan. Agite para combinar. Añada las almendras y las pasas y agite nuevamente. Añada la mezcla del jamón y mezcle. Vierta la mezcla de pan en el molde engrasado para la cazuela, cúbralo con papel aluminio y hornee durante una hora. Retire el papel aluminio después de 30 minutos. hanksgiving is an American holiday, through and through. My parents may have never celebrated it in Cuba, but since living stateside, my family has taken the holiday and made it our own especially when it comes to the food!

While the turkey may be the star of a traditional Thanksgiving, we Cubans love to add a leg of pork to our table. My family even makes the stuffing with pork. I love to flavor it with nutmeg, garlic and sherry and sprinkle it with raisins and slivered almonds.

Then there are the sides. There may be some mashed potatoes, but we prefer plantains and lots of them! Sweet plantain casserole is our answer to sweet potato casserole. And we prefer black beans and rice to green bean casserole. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it…

Try some of my favorite Thanksgiving recipes, below. I hope you enjoy them as much as my family and friends do.

Preparation • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a large rectangular casserole dish.

• Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until the onion softens. Add the ham, cream cheese and vino seco, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Set aside.

• Place the bread pieces in a large bowl. Combine the nutmeg, salt, pepper and cream in a small bowl, and pour the mixture over the bread. Toss to combine. Add the almonds and raisins and toss again.

Add the ham mixture and incorporate. Pour the bread mixture into the prepared casserole dish, cover it with foil and bake for 1 hour, removing the foil after 30 minutes. Let the stuffing cool to room temperature.

Ingredients 1/4 pound (1 stick) butter, plus more as needed 1 large onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 pounds ground sweet or honey-baked ham 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup vino seco (dry white cooking wine) 1 loaf white sandwich bread, torn into bite-sized pieces 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1 cup heavy cream 3/4 cup slivered almonds 3/4 cup raisins
