One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage. Although MICHIGAN may be renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas, dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed anywhere temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves. utumn means different things to many people.

Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage.

Although Michigan may be renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas, dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed anywhere temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves.

The first step to a successful fall foliage excursion is to find the right spot. The Catskill and Adirondack Mountains of New York, Amish Country in Pennsylvania, the Great Lakes from Michigan to Ohio, and many other areas can be great places to witness nature at its most colorful.

To make the most of fall foliage road trips, drivers can keep the following suggestions in mind. · Get off the highway. To see great fall vistas, take a detour from major thoroughfares and visit small towns and mountain passes. Invest in some maps, as cellular networks may be inaccessible in remote locales. · Avoid tourist-heavy areas. Drivers may prefer less crowded roadways to accompany the great scenery. Such drivers should visit areas that are not tourist meccas. Any area that plays home to forests and sprawling landscapes will do.

· Go on foot. To get the best photos, head out at sunrise or sunset.

Soft, golden light dappled by leaves will bring out the golden tones in photos. Going on foot will help you discover the nuances of the season and slow down for a change. · Don't overlook overcast days. Traveling in the rain may not be fun, but overcast days might be ideal. On such days, the sun won't be too warm and drown out the colors. · Bring along binoculars. Wildlife is often mobile and abundant in the fall, as animals scurry to feed and gather supplies before the winter. As a result, autumn is a great time to spot wildlife that's normally hiding in thickets and woodland areas. · Plan for stops along the way.

Don't forget to bring some spending money in the form of cash so that you can enjoy the small farm stands and shops that often dot rural landscapes.

Pick up farm-fresh produce or choose a plump pumpkin. Yard sales also are abundant this time of year.

Small shops may not take credit cards, so if you plan to buy, cash is king. Trees begin shedding their leaves as early as the beginning of September in Canada and the northern United States. As the days press on, the fall finery will gradually shift southward.

For those who can afford to take a weekday off, do so, as weekends might be overcome with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Dos artistas locales celebran sus ancestros

l chef de Grand Rapids, Oscar Moreno, y el artista local Arturo Morales Romero tienen la misión de descolonizar la historia de los mexicanos a través de la comida y el arte.

Moreno es el chef intelectual detrás del restaurante conocido como MeXo GR. Un nombre que dice está destinado a representar la historia de sus antepasados. El Yo representa el término "Mesoamérica" que denota las partes de México y América Central ocupadas por los pueblos indígenas antes de que el área fuera colonizada por los españoles y Xo representa el México moderno.

"Es una fusión entre lo viejo y lo nuevo, antes y después de que los españoles colonizaron el país de México", dice Moreno.

Si bien la experiencia de Morales no es comida, conocer su historia y cultura siempre ha sido una fuerza impulsora para él. Desde niño siempre ha querido mostrar su cultura a través de su arte.

"Mi abuelo siempre decía:" Si te olvidas de tu cultura te volveras un debil”, explica Morales.

Es en esta pasión por recordar su historia y cultura que los dos creativos decidieron elaborar una serie de cenas destacando la historia y las culturas de los pueblos indígenas en México. La pareja llama a la serie la "Serie de Cenas de Chef Prehispánicas".

Cada primer viernes de cada mes, los dos organizan una cena de menú de 5 platos que destaca un grupo indígena diferente de México. Mientras Moreno se enfoca en crear un menú único, Morales se enfoca en crear una pieza de arte que represente la historia de esa comunidad.

“A través de la comida que preparo, quiero que la gente entienda que cada cultura indígena de México es única, y quiero mostrarle a la gente de aquí quienes realmente eran nuestros ancestros indígenas”, explica Moreno.

En la ultima cena, Moreno se dedica a crear un menú en torno a la cultura de Purepecha, un grupo de indígenas de la región noroeste de Michoacán, México.

“La gente de Purepecha es la responsable de El Mole.

Para el menú hice diferentes tipos de mole hechos de vegetales sin ningún producto animal ”, dice Morales.

Mientras que los asistentes comían, Morales dedicó el tiempo para pintar una representación de Curicaveri o dios del sol con los ingredientes que Moreno había preparado para la comida.

“Cuando los españoles llegaron a México, trataron de oprimirnos porque se dieron cuenta de lo inteligentes que éramos.

Ahora nuestro deber es recordar nuestra historia y no permitir que otros dicten quiénes creen que somos. Tenemos nuestra propia identidad y nuestra identidad va mas atras de tres mil años,” comparte Morales.

How two local artists bring back their

indigenous ancestors with food

rand Rapids chef Oscar Moreno and local artist Arturo Morales Romero are on a mission to decolonize the history of Mexican people through food and art.

Moreno is the mastermind chef behind the restaurant known as MeXo GR. A name he says is meant to represent the history of his ancestors. The Me represents the term “Mesoamerica” denoting the parts of Mexico and Central America occupied by the indigenous people before the area was colonized by the Spanish and Xo is mean to represent modern day Mexico.

“It’s a fusion between the old and the new—before and after the Spanish colonized the country of Mexico,” says Moreno.

While Morales’ expertise isn’t food; knowing his history and culture has always been a driving force for him. Since a child, he has always wanted to show his culture through his art.

“My grandfather always said, “If you forget your culture, you will become a weak link,” explains Morales.

It is in this passion to remember their history and culture that the two creators decided to craft a series of dinners highlighting the history and cultures of indigenous folk from Mexico. The pair call the series the “Pre-Hispanic Chef Dinner Series.”

Every first Friday of every month, the two host a five-course menu dinner highlighting a different indigenous group of Mexico. While Moreno focuses on crafting the unique menu, Morales focuses on crafting an art piece that represents the history of that community.

“Through the food I make, I want people to understand that every indigenous culture of Mexico is unique, and I want to show the people in this community who our people are. I want to tell our history without the lens of the Spanish who colo-

nized us,” explains Moreno.

In the most recent dinner series, Moreno created a menu around the culture of Purepecha, a group of indigenous people from the northwest region of Michoacán, Mexico.

“The people of Purepecha are the ones responsible for el mole (thick savory sauce). For the courses I made different kinds of mole made of vegetables without any animal products,” says Morales.

While those in attendance ate, Morales dedicated the time to paint a depiction of Curicaveri or Sun god with the moles prepared by Moreno.

“When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they tried hard to oppress us because they realized how intelligent we were. So now our duty is to remember our history and not allow others to dictate who they think we are. We have our own identity and our identity goes back to more than 3000 years,” shares Morales.

Monthly mortgage payments are the biggest single expense for many homeowners. So it's understandable why plenty of homeowners would love to trim those costs.

A host of factors determine how much homeowners pay for their mortgages each month. The cost of the home, the amount of the initial down payment and property taxes, which are often folded into monthly payments, will factor heavily into the cost of home ownership. While homeowners may feel as though there's little wiggle room to cut the costs of their mortgages, there are several ways to do just that and potentially trim years from the life of a home loan.

• Make bi-weekly payments. Making biweekly instead of once-a-month payments can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. A year's worth of once-a-month payments equates to 12 payments per year. But homeowners who pay on a bi-weekly basis will make 26 half payments, or 13 full payments, per year.

That extra annual payment can be applied directly to the principal, dramatically reducing how much homeowners pay in interest over the life of their loans.

• Stop paying PMI. Homeowners whose initial down payments are less than 20 percent of the sale price will have to pay private mortgage insurance, or PMI. But once the balances on such mortgages falls below 80 percent, homeowners can cancel such insurance. Homeowners may also be able to stop paying PMI by having their homes reappraised.

• Refinance the loan. Refinancing a loan also can save homeowners substantial amounts of money each month. Homeowners are typically eligible for lower interest rates when refinancing their loans, meaning they will pay less in interest each month. However, refinancing is not free, so homeowners should first check the going home interest rates and examine their credit scores to see if the interest rate they're likely to get upon refinancing will save them money. The cost of refinancing might be more than homeowners can save.

• Request a tax reassessment. Real estate values increase and decrease, and homeowners who feel their homes have decreased in value can request that their homes be reassessed. Homeowners whose homes are assessed at a value lower than the current value can expect to pay less each month in taxes. Homeowners hoping to cut mortgage costs have various options at their disposal.

Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one

side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician.

• Discharge from the nipple: The NBCF notes that any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. The NBCF also advises women that a milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician.

Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease.
