Origine: Europa, Asia settentrionale Caratteristiche botaniche: Conifera sempreverde con portamento da conico a colonnare, ramificata fin dalla base, poi da adulta si spoglia e assume forma ad ombrella. Corteccia rosso-grigia e scanalata alla base, sfaldata e di colore rosso-marrone o arancio sulla parte superiore del tronco. Aghi riuniti a due, corti (5-7 cm.) e contorti, grossi e rigidi, color blu-verde. Pianta monoica con infiorescenze maschili e femminili separate ma sulla stessa pianta. Strobili peduncolati ovoidaliconici penduli, verdi poi grigi o marroni a maturitĂ . Semi alati.

Caratteristiche agronomico-ambientali: Costituente della pineta del piano montano, fino a 1800 metri di altitudine, sulle Alpi e su valli aride. Su terreni secchi, ben drenati, leggermente acidi.
